When I was at school a teacher told me always draw the saw backwards 3 times at the start of the cut to put a clear and positive grove in the wood,I've always done it ever since and it works a treat for me,just thought I'd share

I went through the exact same progression. Laplander was a gift from my dad, used it until a "friend" tried to cut a burning log with it while I was sleeping and buggered the blade up. Bought a PocketBoy to replace it and I'm still using that but like you, I've bent the blade a couple of times too. I've been thinking about the GomBoy but I just don't want to pony up the cash. Thanks for the vid, it's good to see I'm not alone in how I use these tools.

I appreciate the balanced perspective rather than trying to push any particular option as "the best" for everyone. Also, the buck saw tip at the end was great. I've never seen that done before.

You mentioned that the Silky's blades were more slender. Take note of the difference between the thickness of the teeth and the thickness at the spine. It doesn't bind in cuts as often, because the spine is thinner than the teeth. (Of course, you can make any saw bind if you are sawing at a pinch point in the wood ie-the wood is under tension)

I currently use a small Fiskars SW73 which is a sliding type saw. I do hope it lasts, even though some say it won't, including you. The thing about it is that the blade is hidden inside the handle, which means it's quite safe to just throw into any bag. That is something I really like, I usually cover my folding saw with a plastic bag so it doesn't scratch or damage anything in the bag or the bag itself.

I bought this Corona folding saw from my local Lowe's for less than $20 and it is amazing. 9.5 or 10 inch, not sure exactly, curved blade with razor teeth and I cut through a 10 inch mesquite branch in less than a minute. Would definitely recommend especially for the price.

Thanks for your video, I always enjoy them and pick up ideas or tips that I can use.
I am new to the whole outdoor back country camping experience and I wondered about the true folding saws like the Silky. I was worried about the purchase a person would have when cutting and about possible binding of the blade, but your demo showed this doesn't seem to be a problem.
The saw I have started out with is the 15" Sven folding saw. It is one you have to do some assembly and disassembly and requires you to loosen and tighten a wing nut which can be a bit of a fiddly process unlike your bucksaw. Be careful not to take the nut off the thread rod when putting the blade on or taking it off or you can lose it. However, once assembled the saw is solid and works very well. The blade has deep cutting coarse teeth that seldom binds.
I chose the 15" over the 21" because I wanted the blade to be shorter, less chance of buckling, and I do carry a spare blade just in case it breaks. I figured most wood I would be sawing would be 6" or less in diameter so I didn't need the deeper clearance between the blade and frame - the saw when assembled forms a triangle so there is a limit to the size of log you can cut through.
The 15" unit is shorter and a little lighter than the 21", which is not a big issue as I canoe camp, but may be a consideration for the backpacker.
The only other thought is that its metal construction allowed the manufacturer to make the handle thinner. This I found to be ok, but I wear a glove when sawing to get a better grip and prevent blistering if I have a lot of wood to process or if the weather is very hot and I am sweating.
My comments may make it seam like there are a lot of issues with this saw, however, these are minor points that I have learned to get around with using the saw. I like the saw very much, but i will definitely look at adding the Silky Gomboy to my pack...to bad Christmas has just past...
Thanks again and keep the videos coming.

Also the reason the silk us bend more is the blade tappers up from the teeth so the spine of the blade isn't causing any friction and binding.

  • @ubb4me
    @ubb4me 8 ปีที่แล้ว

The silkys are designed to cut on the pull which is why some people bend / bind the blade. You should choose the blade type based on whether or not you are cutting hardwood, green wood, etc.

Outside of the Craftsman wrenches and sockets, it seems like a lot of their knives and stuff are junk and are typically made in China. I did find a folding saw at Sears labeled as a Craftsman Folding Utility Saw. They are made by Tajima in Japan and I think are definitely worth a look. I think i got mine for $23 and I believe it has the Craftsman warranty. Would love to see someone like Joe give it a test and compare it to the other folders.

Silky sells a special file for resharpening so that might be worth taking a look at. I think it's like $10-15. So that's a cheap way to get more life. unless that blade is bent or broken no need to replace.

I'm rocking a couple of Silky's myself - got the 24 Gomboy as well as the larger 'Bigboy' - an absolute beast with the Coarse teeth on it - like a chainsaw through wood. The steel doesn't like the bitter Icy freezing weather though as Ive knocked the last I/2 Inch tip off on the Gomboy through a very gentle tap on the steel - a little 'ping' and it shot off into the leaf litter!
    Good Vid mate

Great video, Joe. I'm living quite comfortably outside in Burlington, Vermont winters because of your videos. It's fun & saves me money. I'm trying to learn what saw & what blade to use for the different woods. I don't know when to use a dry wood or wet wood blade. I don't know how to distinguish soft or hard wood. I know some trees are more dense and tougher to saw. I'm in snowy, wet freezing temps. I'm looking to buy myself a nice new saw like a Boreal 15 or 21. Or a Silky Gomboy. I watch a lot of Knife Center videos so I know which knives can handle certain tasks. Saws are a bit more complicated. My corona saw cuts like butter on small stuff, but I want to build some bushcraft furniture and benches. I want to cut through some deadfallen that's at least 6-7" thick. The Corona says it cuts through wood that thick but it's a lot of work. I want a saw that cuts through the thick stuff like the Corona folder cuts through 3-4" stuff. Thanks for all the great videos over the years! You're a true Craftsman. 🔥🌲 Blessings to you & your family and Tripper.

BushcraftCanada.com has the Gomboy for $59.99 the 240 replacement blade is $29.99. This is the first folding saw I purchased and I did bind it up and the tip broke but after continuing to use it and learning it, that was a user error. Hey, guys! Don't ignore the Corona 10" folding saw that you can find at Lowe's for $20. It cuts on par (inch for inch) with the long Bahco blades that are used on the Adventure Sworn saw in this video. While it won't make as fine a cut as the little Bahco Laplander blade, it will rip through wood WAY faster. For crafting, I would choose the Bahco Laplander. For a firewood folding saw, I'd use Corona. For big firewood processing, I'd use the long Bahco dry wood blades.

Hey Joe, great comparison. I used the Laplander quite a lot and built a couple of different bucksaws on longer trips. I found that with a 21 inch bucksaw I can get work done as fast as with the bigger ones and they also work even better when used by two people. But I think I will try a Gomboy instead of the Laplander in the future ;)

I use Silky saws daily, mainly the Sugoi (I'm an Arborist). I have a pocketboy and have broken 2 blades and the 3rd is bent already. They just aren't thick enough to handle any real abuse, I've been looking at the gomboy - it seems the better option for a folder. And the Katanaboy has my eye, it's pricey and heavy but man can it do work. SurvivalRussia has some real impressive footage of the Katanaboy in action. Personally if I'm expecting to be doing any major cutting, I bring my Sugoi - the weight difference isn't much, it just needs a spot on the side or back of my pack. You should review a Katanaboy lol, convince me to blow a little more cash haha. Thanks man, take care.

Dude, the gomboy is a beast. Thanks for the video! I used it as a point of reference and decided to get it. Came in handy while boar hunting.

Observation: Check the "set" of the teeth. The blade needs to a 2-5* set to the teeth to prevent binding of the blade in the cut. I have found the cheaper bow and folding saws have no "set" and they bind up ... no matter how sharp the teeth are. "Set" means the teeth have a slight outward angle, so the teeth cut slightly wider then the "kerf" (thickness) of the blade. The Laplander, the Silkie's and the Bureal21 all have a proper "set" and that is why they cut well. I have the BigBoy and am saving my pennies for Bureal21 w/ the case (currently $110.00 on Amazon) As my "axe skills" are not that good, I prefer to saw vs chop ... safer too. Be safe "processing" wood ...

Bahco is awesome. I have a green wood replacement blade and it chewed through damp logs like a meth beaver this summer.
