Toyota Prado 2021 review: GXL off-road test

  • Toyota’s 4WDs have a sterling reputation as off-road touring vehicles. But while the brand’s top-sellers like the 200 Series LandCruiser and the HiLux get all the adulation, the mid-size Prado simply goes about its business of being a decent all-rounder with little fuss or fanfare.
    However, it’s been looking and feeling a little bit aged in recent years … but Toyota is hoping that a bit of a range refresh has sorted that out.
    The new Prado has more power and torque than the previous version, but the price has gone up across the range - almost $3000 extra for this mid-spec GXL, as an example.
    But it does now have a bigger multimedia screen, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so it’s up to speed there at least.
    So, is the new Prado worth your consideration? Let's find out.

      Funny thing is, the barn door rear hatch is one of the main reasons we went for a 150 and not a 200 series. When you need to use the 3rd row seats through the back door that hatch makes life easier.

      An Early 150 Series had the 1GR-FE, perhaps if you need a new Prado in the future a good Early 150 will do ya well. Even the 1st Facelift which was... something else to look at had it.

      Just compare the 0-100km/h times. If you’re still confused, ask yourself if you want to pay ~$90,000 for a ten year old Toyota?
      If you want to put a lift kit on it, a bull bar and other extras, you best get the Toyota.
      If you’re keeping it stock, discovery 5 has better approach, ramp over, and departure angles from factory.
      If you get the disco, option the rear difflock 👍🏻

    • @richardddeath
      @richardddeath 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As a very happy convert from 30 years of Landrover to Landcruiser I concede that the Disco has the edge on paper and straight out of the factory but five years down the line the LC will feel like a brand new car with no rattles, squeaks or mechanical issues but the money bleeding, heart aching nightmare of landrover ownership will be just beginning, or maybe it began after six months or sometimes six weeks, best decision I ever made.

    Designing seven seats for an off-road vehicle is the most stupid design. When people go out in off-road vehicles, what they need most is more space to carry more equipment, food, and water. By no means need many people to sit in the vehicle. I have a seven-seater off-road vehicle. It has been five years since I bought it. The last two seats have not been used once, but the space in the car is wasted.

    • @rustysworldofentertainment850

      Absolutely agree. Take the third row out and put storage drawers in, if you can. Unfortunately only the GX doesn't have the 3rd row seats, but that variant doesn't come with the diff locks. Toyota needs to get their specs right and look at the practicality of what they're offering. The GXL is still a brilliant vehicle though.
