Bloody great comparison mate, I am amazed how much space the fortuner actually has inside. I stand by my decision to buy my big comfy armchair tourer but the Fortuner is a bloody good choice for a lot of people
Ronny is doing the best 4x4 video reviews BY FAR, exactly the info we want to know, and with the chapters you can get right to the exact point. Good job Ronny and Crew.
Recently chose a Prado. I felt the fortuner to be a little too cramped loaded with kid seats, the long range tank is awesome and comfort is great. Also the resale value on a prado seemed to be much stronger. Also a solid review.
Just reading a lot of the comments and it was noted that one of the big concerns of the Fortuner is the fuel tank capacity. There is a 45 liter additional tank that can be fitted in the tire well which should give you roughly the same range as the Prado. According to the fitment place it does not compromise clearance. In South Africa we have been driving Fortuners' since 2006 and it has to be one of the most popular vehicles here. I might be slightly prejudice as I have owned one or two and will be buying my third soon. Really good video by the way.
Ronny, I'm writing this from the US, and own a 4Runner, FJ and Lexus GX460. I'd say that the current 5th gen 4Runner is bigger than the current Hilux based Fortuner. Its 2 inches longer, 2.8" wider and has 9.6 inches clearance to 8.6 in the Fortuner. All three, the FJ (which you have in Oz), the 4Runner and GX460 are Prado based, the wheel bases being 105.9, 109.8 and 109.8 inches respectively. The 4Runner has the Fortuner style tailgate while the FJ and GX have the Prado style tailgate, although with different swings. The GX has the Fortuner style 3rd row seats while the 4Runner has the Prado style, and the FJ doesn't have any. The ride in the 4Runner with TRD shocks and KDSS is closer to a Landcruiser 300 series than not. The Curb weights for the FJ/T4R/GX are 4330, 4750, 5350 (approx.) each. Only the GX has a V8, all Gasoline/petrol powered only. The Fortuner and Prado weigh almost 4700 and 5260 lbs in Australia! The diesel engines in the Fortuner and Prado add at least 100~150 lbs to their Curb weights. The Lexus is a Lux mobile because of all the extra body panels reducing clearance for off-roading.
For touring in Australia the extra 70L of fuel available in the Prado (with door mounted spare) would have to win it. The comfort on rougher roads is a nice bonus to, as is the range of aftermarket accessories. Now that 150L long range tank you've got for the Hilux makes things interesting.
I think the GX Fortuner is fantastic value for money especially now with the upgraded engine. Not that fussed with paddle shift and the chrome bits of the GXL. We will be ordering a GX in the new year thanks for a great review mate!

Do you know why he picked the fortuner? Because of the value like with the same price as the Prado, you will get more options in the Fortuner in fact, the Fortuner is faster as well. So I say it's a good choice when someone is on the budget. Many people would choose the same when they are in budget
We reached, watched reviews and took for test drive after test drive with both of the. The price was a big thing but what was the deal breaker for us that No one covers in any reviews is the anchor points for baby / booster seats is that the middle one in the Fortuner is in the roof above the back door. We have 3 seats in at all time and if had a extra person come along for the day the strap from the middle seat is right next to the person in the 3rds head. So for that we went the PRADO.
We also found in the Fortuner the seats rubbed on the doors. We were lucky enough that we could take both for a 24hr drive and could see the doors pushing on the seats and almost touching in the Prado
The world needs more videos like this one. I didn't expect the fortuner to keep up with the prado. Thought it was much smaller too. I would take the fortuner simply due to the price and they appear very much alike. But if I had to make a decision today, I would look at the Pajero Sport and Pajero first.
@@TopRevvedCarsI can see why the 4Runner is the American version of the Fortuner since it’s a midsize off road suv that’s cheaper than the Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX. However I don’t think those 2 cars are alike at all. Aside from the obvious styling differences, the 4Runner rides on the F2 Platform while the Fortuner rides on the IMV Platform. In addition the Fortuner comes in many diesel engines while the 4Runner only has 2 petrol engines to choose from.
Been in the “fortunate” 😄 position to own a top spec 2017 model Fortuner for 3 years and traded it in now on a top spec 2020 Prado. Both very capable vehicles and enjoyed the Fortuner a lot. The Kdss suspension on the Prado is a major differentiator and very impressive. Thanks for the great comparison👍

The most comprehensive video Ive seen on the Fortuner. Every test, comparison, and information you provided checked every question I would consider. Really perfect vehicle review
Genuinely good review, covering content that is really overlooked or 'sponsored' on TH-cam. Excellent insight at the end as to what you would buy and why. Well thought out reasoning. This is what vehicle comparison reviews should be. Thanks.
Thanks for the review Ronny. I purchased a new Prado GX last month and here are my reasons. I had a '17 Ranger 4x4 and basically got tired of the hard ride. I didn't consider Hilux or Fortuna as they are both know to not ride/handle as well as a Ranger, but even the Ranger gets tiring over distance. The Ranger significantly out handles the Prado (in the dry only) with beautifully accurate and balanced EPAS compared to the Prado's old school hydraulic steering, and with a stiff chassis and suspension it handled surprisingly well (and I came out of a hot hatch to the Ranger). In the wet however I would put this to you....the Prado is in an entirely different league to the Fortuna. Even the Ranger is deadly on a wet road. No amount of electronics can tame a RWD with a stiff light rear end, and it's almost as bad when you put weight in it as it just means there is more weight sitting high to be thrown out around a corner. Fortuna might be a bit better in this respect with rear softer coils, but test I saw last year emulating the Scandinavian 'elk test' saw Toyota lagging significantly behind the pack in the VSC capability. RWD just cannot compete with the AWD of the Prado in my opinion, where I have found you can virtually drive the Prado the same wet or dry. Even though it is a boat in handling terms, the Prado feels safe and composed wet or dry with a magic-carpet ride, wet weather grip and rock solid resale (that I do not think you get with a Fortuna to the same degree), and that isn't even considering the (I believe) sturdier construction of the Prado (hence more weight).
I had a 2015 Everest Ambiente and it was superb to drive, including AWD. But it was a lemon, Adblue/terrain system/ecu failures on a regular basis with no fix ever successful. It was a heart-breaker. So I got a Fortuner for affordability and reliability and have not been disappointed. I only ever see Rangers on the back of tilt trays, never toyotas. When I eventually upgrade, it will probably be a Prado...
I'm looking at a prado, y62 or 200. dreaming with the 200 really because the prices are stupid now. Anyway, I've got a 17 hilux on 33 muddies and it's shithouse in the wet. Like you said with the ranga, pretty dangerous. For this reason I'm looking at a fulltime 4x4/awd wagon. For comparison our other car is an X3 and i floor it in the wet with no dramas at all. TC doesn't even turn on.
You did it again: detailed, honest, reasonable keeping in mind that for every day people value for money matters most. Thank you for this GREAT video. You helped so many people to make the right choice! Hands down best channel @ronnydahl
The Fortuner is my pic but only because it's a Hilux , I think if you have a look it used to be a Hilux surf before becoming a fortuner . The surf has been around since early 80s 👍
I've owned a fortuner for 5 years now and I can honestly say it's a great vehicle. I live out west in n.s.w and I drive in less then desirerable roads every day, the fortuner hasn't shook anything loose as of yet and has been very mechanically sound. I haven't had a problem with fuel ranges because in the real world as was said I would just carry more fuel if I needed and the benefit of that is I can drop weight instantly if I needed. I do agree however with the stiff ride but this can be fixed with some nice shocks and let's face it if you're touring you're probably going to change shocks anyhow. Great honest review, for the extra you would pay for a base model prado you could spend on mods anyhow.
Much better review than the cup holder reviewers at cars guide and the like..... Prado is my choice... (though in reality I drive a V6 diesel Touareg as I wanted more power.... please ask them to put a V6 diesel in the Prado)
Thank you for the awesome review Ronny. I had the 2012 Fortuner for 4 years and my only compline was ride toughness, and I have always wondered how would my Fortuner would compared to a Prado so thank you for answering thoses quitions. And mostimportanly voiceing your choise at the end, most youtubers would just wuss away from that.
Great stuff as usual Ronnie. I'd go the GXL Prado. Getting older I can do without the bone shaking and appreciate the comfort on big trips. Love my 159litre tank in my current FJ... never want to go back to a standard tank. More available accessories is also nice to have. Could be wrong here... but maybe when travelling remote, spares may be more available than the Fortuner? Love your work though mate. Keep them coming... Cheers 🍻
I'm just buying a nearly new LC150 in the UK. Choice was really a Hilux, Shogun Sport or 150/Prado. I can't have door mounted spare or the bigger fuel range, the rear most seats will be coming out, but 150's permanent 4x4 swung it for me for icy Scottish roads.
All day long the Prado, price is a silly justification for picking the fortuner but that speaks to the general mode of thinking for a lot of Aussies unfortunately. There’s no accounting for taste. People kit out a 40 grand 4wd with Kings gear so they can save 50 bucks for gods sake. If you are spending a significant amount on a car don’t half ass it and get a rig that handles ordinary
@@4WheelsOnTheRoad true... But in India my country prado in CBU( imported) and taxes here for imported vehicles are 120%... So it costs more than double of it's original price.. while fortuner is locally made and in India fortuner is more widely used so there are more accessories available for it... I don't know think so buying prado in india is worth it.......
Thank you for compassion to back my opinion. I got the Fortuner as it came out in Australia. I did the compasison of these two, looking at the drive, cost and look with the Fortuner winning bar rear seats folding (Prado) and yucky brown leather seating (fortuner crusade).
Fortuner is already on order since late December thanks to your Fortuner review video. Our first 4wd since having AWDs pretty excited heavily driven by many of your videos over the last couple years 🤙
Great review Ronny, but you omit one important point, you can get the Prado in a 5 seat. Yes only on the GX, but compare the kerb weight of the GX with the GXL VX etc. and there is up to a huge 215kg difference. AND much more cargo room in the rear without the seats. Yes, the GX has no rear locker you say, but is a rear locker worth the extra $6 grand and the extra weight you get? No I say and I bought the GX. I can always fit a rear locker for much less than the 6grand I saved over a GXL. The GX is the pick I say.
Our car is Toyota Fortuner GX 2015 model. We are upgrading to the new 2021 Toyota Fortuner GXL in March. We are loving the Toyota Fortuner. Been a reliable car. It works well for our family.
Loved this video man, your reviews are great. I’ve got a Prado 90 and love it. I’d also love to see the current Prado vs the current 200 series to see if you think it’s really worth the extra $. 🤙🏾
The Fox DSC coil over made our Lexus GX460 (same as the Prado) amazing. I would say add the DSC to the Fortuner to get a smoother better ride and save the difference vs the Prado but have a better ride also that is super adjustable for comfort or stiffer highway/towing.
I went for a Fortuner, price was the main factor. Although I personally do not like the lazy boy feel of the Prado on the highway and more windy NZ roads, it feels a bit unattached from the road. The Fortuner has more feel. Great touring vehicle.
Fortuner all day. Why? The barn door sucks. It's nice to have a roof over your head when you're working in the back in the rain. He touched on the trailer problem, it's the same situation in a tight parking spot. Also the amount of space the mandatory third row takes. That's what, 4 inches of usable floor height? Ridiculous. At least you can take the seats out of the fortuner.
Thanks Ronny, I was up at Toyota today looking at them both. I too have picked the Fortuna GXL for a touring semi offroader with the 4wd capability. I needed a decent car for the steep slippery boat ramps of the NT, I don’t think I’ll be disappointed
I have a 2011/12 V6 Fortuner4x4 and love it. The 2005-2016 4x4 models were also permanent 4wd with locking center and rear diffs. Taking out the jump seats freed up a huge amount of space in the back, they were nice to have when needed, but needed so infrequently that I took them out. Also no jump seats means much better visibility. Here in 🇿🇦 I'd say there are more aftermarket options for the Fortuner than Prado. Would I love to have a Prado as my daily, absolutely. Would I pay the premium for it over the Fortuner, probably not - if I was going that far I'd probably go 200 for not a lot more.....
I had a Prado 120 for 10 years and now I own a 2019 Hilux. both are great but the Prado is definitely the more luxury feeling vehicle in comparison to the Fortuner. or as Ronny would put it "Redefined" 😂😂
Good review Ronny - the Fortuner would be a no-brainer for me with it’s great value for money nimble, economical Hilux underpinnings as an off-road and daily driver - the deal breaker for me with the Prado is weight, fuel economy, length and that woeful barn door that also appears on the Pajero and RAV4 - it’s too long for safe parallel parking especially when you need to open the bloody rear door while trying to avoid hitting the car behind - I’ve previously owned many Subaru wagons where I could happily have a lunch stop under the shelter of the rear door during sun and rain - I now drive a 2010 Hilux diesel auto with newly installed aluminium canopy which again provides excellent shelter on both sides - John in SA
I would opt for the Fortuner because of the extra space and lower cost. I really don’t need the luxury the Prada offers. As far as looks go, as long as it’s not down right butt ugly, I really don’t care. I’m more function over form. As far as history goes, I lean toward a long history. My reasoning is, the longer a model vehicle has been around the longer there is to have worked out all the bugs and more time to be refined. Plus I love my 4Runner and if the Fortuner is more like the 4Runner that’s what I’m going with.
Great review Ronny, its the Prado for me with the fuel capacity already calculated in weight which is good also the Prado has been around for a long while and while the dollars are well up there it is the piece of mind that would support the purchase. I’m also thinking that you get that 3rd row out drops the floor height reduces weight and makes way for a set of drifta draws ... also I support a previous comment on doing a review of Harrys new rig ... keep the vids coming ... makes my days that bit more .... livable
I take delivery of a 150 prado next week. I wish I had watched this before committing to my purchase. So much better than any 9f the other reviews that I have watched?
Got a 2018 Prado gxl it does everything well. Smashes the sand, it’s comfortable on corrugated roads/gravel. It’s amazing on long drives. The only fault I recon is it has a bit of body roll around town. Plus it looks 10x better than a fortuner.
What an exceptional video. Excellent comparison throughout! I am just about fully informed now. Thank you so much for the extra attention to detail!!!!!
Great review Ronnie, looked like alot of work mate (and play) to get this review done, Ive had a Fortuner for the last 5 years and I still love it, thanx for the review, much appreciated and thanx again for sharing!
Great comparison touching on all vital issues. Fortuner! Had a 1997 Prado TZ 3.4 litre quad cam new for 8 years did 80,000 km. Capable enjoyed it, not much grunt after 130 km an hour though, hahaha 😄! Besides tyres and fuel NOTHING needed repairing or replacing, bloody amazing reliability!
Prado GXL for me. The extra fuel capacity, the comfort (given the distances one has to cover in Australia touring), the availability of options and accessories plus the off-road ability justifies the extra cost. Which is false economy, as once you've cried because you paid for a Prado, you'll own it for so many years that you'd have forgotten the pain and gotten all the pleasure. If you buy a Fortuner, you'll like it when you're young but, once it has rattled the fillings out of your teeth, you'll sell it at a loss and buy a Prado anyway :)
Hi. Cool video, thanks. In my opinion full time drive is much better. Part time is weak and not good enough. full time is safer and works better in many conditions. I'd go for prado and I own prado KZJ95L 1998 still runs sweet :) Drivetrain is the thing to consider. Regards from Poland
Great comparison, Ronny. I have a 2016 Crusade and love those flappy paddles. I have the rear seats out and a set of Drifta draws in. But I reckon my upgrade in a few years will be to a Prado. The rear door and 150L fuel tank are big advantages. I just wish it had a six cylinder diesel...
Hi, great review, thanks! Planning to retire soon so wanted some comfort and extra safety features, so have gone the Prado VX. We’re fortunate money wasn’t a huge issue and plan to keep the car for a long time. Didn’t want a Landcruiser as they are to big and we don’t need huge towing capacity. We currently tow a Cub camper trailer and will eventually upgrade to a hybrid van or smaller caravan, so the new tweaked motor is perfect for our needs. Just waiting on delivery of the vehicle and looking forward to more off-road adventures!
Had a Fortuner since 2011 in SA and it is fully kitted out. Toured most of Southern Africa in it with family of 4. This newer version has lost a bit of build quality internally from the previous version. And it was best described by my 12-year-old daughter. She sat in the back and noticed that the pockets behind the seats had halved in height, meaning her colouring book would sag. Then she noticed there is no division between the Cup holder older and the remaining storage in the door. So if she took out her water bottle all her pencils and things in the remaining compartment would slip into the drinks holder. It is the same in the front. Not nice when in my case all my torches, pressure gauge, sunscreen and mozzie repellent have to be relocated each time I want return my drinks bottle. The engine though is a brilliant improvement on the 3.0 D4D.

Thanks so much for that as we have 3 seats too and are making the same choice soon!
But if I had to make a decision today, I would look at the Pajero Sport and Pajero first.
big fan from Canada, keep up the great work Ronny!
I own a 2020 4Runner and it's a great vehicle all around, including off-road
4runner is technically the American version of Fortuner. Both SUVs was known as the Hilux Surf until it got replaced by the Hilux SW4
Nice review bro! I have a Fortuner GXL and removed the back seats. 30 odd kilos each! So hope that helps people with their decisions. Love your work mate!!!
30 kilos each dickie seat? I doubt it, you clearly don't lift bro

Is it true that you can slide the second row of seats back to have extra leg room?
@@radomillion yeah you can but it only slides back about and inch or so. I’m six foot 2 and you’d have to have it back to make it comfortable for the rear passengers for most driving positions. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Very happy with the results on this review given I placed my order for the GXL Fortuner before I found this video. 🙂
Thanks for the Video! This has just confirmed that our next car to go with our 76 will be the Fortuner :)
One of your best reviews.
No product placement, good.
My heart says Prado, my bank account says Myki
The most comprehensive video Ive seen on the Fortuner. Every test, comparison, and information you provided checked every question I would consider. Really perfect vehicle review
If i was to buy a Prado, i would want one that looks exactly like Harry's, i like it.
This guys on to it it’s the modern surf can’t agree more
I've owned a fortuner for 5 years now and I can honestly say it's a great vehicle.
Agree!
Nice Video...
But ill pick Prado over Fortuner any day....

Best indepth so far that i have come across
I’m happy with my Prado 120 series mark 3 diesel with the same 70 series dual fuel tank capacity of 180 litres.
Thank you for your effort in making a quality comparison between these two vehicles. Many try to it but you clearly are better by miles at doing it
Great job, big fan from Greece. 🇬🇷
Thank you for compassion to back my opinion. I got the Fortuner as it came out in Australia. I did the compasison of these two, looking at the drive, cost and look with the Fortuner winning bar rear seats folding (Prado) and yucky brown leather seating (fortuner crusade).
Very good review ! Detailed ! We do use a lot of Toyota as well over here ! Thanks from Africa !
Top review. I bought the Fortuner 2021 VX. Full spec here in South Africa 🇿🇦. Value for money. Love 💘it.
Great video again Ronny. Well reasoned, and very professionally done. Almost swayed me to Fortuna- but the 150L fuel tank is a massive advantage IMO.
Also a G wagon review and Modified 😍
Buy the 200 for towing. It’s the only valid reason to buy one
Cracking video Ronny and was the main reason I ended up getting the Fortuner and haven't looked back. Much appreciated.
Excellent review, just what I was looking for. Thanks for the effort!
Looking at my bank account I would go for a second hand Patrol of earlys 2000s...
zd30 go boom
Get a late 90s td42 patrol instead
One the best car reviews I have watched. Good stuff.
Excellent explanation on the vehicle GVM!
My heart is with u for choosing the vehicle

Plus it looks 10x better than a fortuner.
no fortuner looks better, prado looks rlly bad.

My choice is the Prado all the time hehehe
What an exceptional video. Excellent comparison throughout! I am just about fully informed now. Thank you so much for the extra attention to detail!!!!!
How about the next test how the Pardo , Fortuna and Hilux tow a boat , caravan or camper ?

No doubt, hands down to LC Prado!
-comfort
-luxury
-safety
-reliability 👍😊
Prado GXL for me. The extra fuel capacity, the comfort (given the distances one has to cover in Australia touring), the availability of options and accessories plus the off-road ability justifies the extra cost. Which is false economy, as once you've cried because you paid for a Prado, you'll own it for so many years that you'd have forgotten the pain and gotten all the pleasure. If you buy a Fortuner, you'll like it when you're young but, once it has rattled the fillings out of your teeth, you'll sell it at a loss and buy a Prado anyway :)
I'll definitely buy it because of the 7 seats. Big family and all
Hands down the best review
Even Toyota knows it’s Prado, hence the reason they put the land cruiser badge on it.

I have a 2016 Crusade and love those flappy paddles. I have the rear seats out and a set of Drifta draws in.

Happy retirement Sir.
I think the 150 liters is for the version of the Prado with the extra tire at the back instead not under.
Excellent Review RD. One of the best comparisons, well detailed and researched.
