New Toyota Land Cruiser (Prado) 2018 review - see just how tough it is!

  • The Toyota Land Cruiser, also known as the Prado, is a tough off-roader. There's a reason why it's THE go-to choice for so many drivers who spend their time in the wilderness. To prove just how tough the latest version really is, Toyota invited me to Namibia to try it out. It's one of my roughest in-depth reviews ever!

    The Prado is a beauty of a car. It doesn't deserve the title of "Watered" down Land Cruiser, this car more than holds its own and should be esteemed for a 4x4. You can absolutely never go wrong with this in your garage!

    In Australia Range Rover is king.....if you're a woman or middle aged man who fanticises about the receptionist and dreams up extravagant scenarios where he gets to drop her home after a work do in Sydney city.
    Anywhere else, towing caravans or horses, crossing croc infested rivers, thousands of kms of corrugations, sand, bulldust, rock, 45 c outside, expected to last 1 million kms with basic maintenance in the back yard and maybe pull a road train or two out of a boggy dirt road, its Land cruiser.

    I would never compare a Land Cruiser with a Land Rover that falls apart when almost brand new. My neighbor has had a Land Cruiser for 22 years and it's still going strong. He owns a small company that cuts wood in some remote forests so it gets driven off-road and abused a lot. He even crashed it once and destroyed the front bumper. Despite 22 years of abuse, it's still going strong. How long would a Land Rover last?

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Well I had a Land Rover working on the farm and towing 3.5 tons regularly for 22 years and 12,000 hours of use, which was equivalent to around 350,000 road miles, and another few for around 10 years each.
      I've also got a Land Cruiser 100 1HD FT-E, bought new, which is 20 years old in September this year and has nearly 200,000 miles on the clock. I'm off now to hitch up the 14ft triple axle trailer to it and will tow two loads of 3.5 tons each, approximately 56 miles. A job that the old Land Rover 110 HiCap pickup used to do. A job now shared with a Ford Ranger.

    If you call this a Toyota Land Cruiser (without adding the word Prado to it) here in the UAE, people will literally laugh at you. Here, the Prado is considered just a lower-end alternative to the Land Cruiser, and it never gets the respect or esteem of its higher tier brother. The Land Cruiser (the non-Prado one), on the other hand, is on a whole new level of recognition and popularity. People consider it the King of 4×4s (Patrol fans will surely disagree tho).

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes I agree. The 120-150 series Prado is a pale imitation of the 100-200 series. Unfortunately they have stopped importing the 200 series into the UK because it is uncompetitive in our conditions with the Range Rover and it is just too big and bulky for the room available inside for passengers. Both big and 'small' Land Cruiser are not actually very roomy inside. My Ford Ranger has as much room in the second row are does my 100 series Cruiser. The cruiser also lacks payload capacity while the smaller Cruiser lacks towing capacity and power in the overwhelmingly popular diesel form [here in Europe]

All roads are also more than wide enough here, so the LC really does win by a long shot, not accounting the price-to-performance ratio of course. The LC is a hell lot of money!

    Nearly had to sell my new Landcruiser here recently - could not get insurance for the commercial "van" version we have in Ireland so had to look at the new BMW X5 as a possible option. Even with all its luxury I still preferred my Landcruiser. I don't need a head up display or a rear door that opens at the push of a button on the key fob. Got the insurance for the Landcruiser sorted eventually - so I am a happy man again now.

    I’m now onto my second Prado. They are fabulous - solid, built like a brick 💩 🏠, indestructible and super comfortable too. When I lived in the desert 🇶🇦 there was a saying: if you want to get into the desert drive a Range Rover, if you want to get out the desert drive a Landcruiser. Job done…
