    I’ve been shooting professionally for 30 years, so here’s my take: good review, but I don’t know why the menu is at the top of everyone’s list. It’s not any worse than any other menu on any camera I’ve ever owned and if you use the camera daily or at least frequently it becomes quickly intuitive, so no problem.
    The biggest upgrade between the two seems to be the dual card slots and the bigger battery. That’s a useful improvement. Still use common sense with cards, (avoid high GB cards, stick to trusted brands, and change and format cards often) and don’t get too confident in the dual slots.
    The sensors are the same in both cameras so image quality appears identical. I also haven’t noticed a big difference in autofocus, but then I don’t shoot sports or fashion, mostly architecture, products, and landscapes/wildlife, and I often manually focus so maybe that’s just me.
    I’ve used the a7Rii every day for 6 years and found it to be tough, reliable, quick, and have amazing image quality. I’ve rented the a7Riii, and never found the need to pony up for the switch. I guess It just depends what you use it for.
    For a lot of people, the a7Rii is STILL a great and sensible choice.

    Thank you. I started with the a6000 and now looking to choose between a7riii and the a7iii.
    I want the larger resolution camera. So many times my clients need something cut out of a picture to use somewhere else or in a design. Large format and shoot RAW always. Make the most of every shutter.

    Thanks for making the video. I've used the A7Rii for just over 2 years and it's a great camera, but the buffer and write speed (to UHS1 SD cards) is so slow. At least once every shoot, when I want to let a client review the images we just shot, I have to wait for the camera to finish writing (compressed RAWs) to the SD card before we can playback the images. I have said "This is a great camera but it does write very slowly" so often, it's become second nature. Looking forward to getting the A7Riii so that I don't have to keep buying time when I'm with a client.

    I upgraded from the a7rii as well and I agree the a7riii is a much better camera especially when moving the focus point which was a real pain with the a7rii. I just love using the a7riii its just so much fun.

    Why are none of the reviews mentioning the fact that the 7R3 has 120fps at 1080p, which the 7R2 lacks and it also does 10fps shutter, where the 7R2 only does 5fps. Apart from that, great review.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alex good point. With what I shoot I am not too concerned about shutter FPS, but that can be a big one for sports photographers or others shooting high speed actions. I'd recommend the A7III over both of these cameras for that

  • @MichaelCampbellPhoto
    @MichaelCampbellPhoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Sean, I have been thinking about upgrading from the 2 to the 3 But I am shooting mainly landscapes and real estate with the A7r2 and so speed is not really the issue. I use a A99m2 for portriats and Iuse the A6500 for sport and hummingbirds. so I cant really justify spending anothert $2000 or so on the R3 at the moment.

    Plus the focus system has been improved on the a7rIII. I had read a lot of information on the a7rII and was not impressed. I decided to hold out for a dependable camera and predictable. I just wanted to watch videos of what the users experience is.
    Plus the upgraded duel card slots ( mandatory if your professional) bigger battery for longer life so you don't miss those critical pictures for clients.

    Good video! Thank you for sharing. But I did have some major issues with what you said.
    The only real argument here seems to be the dual card slots for the a7riii.
    The camera freezing has not been an issue for many people including me, a long time user of the a7rii. Autofocus for me on the a7rii has always been fantastic and impressive. The original a7r was truly terrible. Customizability has always been great, with the ii we just have one less c button. You should have taken the time on the ii to setup your buttons. It leads to smoother operation certainly. Also, I've learned the menus at this point, they're weird but not impossible to work with. I really don't see a difference in the new menus other than where everything is located.
    Lastly, the price difference is astronomical. Making an upgrade almost pointless unless you need that dual card slots Imo.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oliver Valente Appreciate your insight man. Of course the rII is a fantastic camera. And you’re right, some of the things I mentioned really aren’t that bad. I do think it’s much faster and more efficient to use though, and that’s something I value because I like to shoot fast.
      It’s the same price as the rII when it came out, and resale value is good on these cameras, so for me it wasn’t much of a price problem. It’s not a necessary upgrade, not at all, but it’s one I’m very happy I made.

    • @olivergoldvalente
      @olivergoldvalente 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean Dalton Photography definitely understandable as a working photographer. If you have the money and it fits your workflow already why not!
      I don't make my living off of photography so there's the perspective difference for sure.
      Love both cameras just think some of the differences weren't as impactful as let's say the move from the a7r to the a7rii.
      Thanks for the reply!

      @@olivergoldvalente The better camera is the one you have to think less about and not baby sit the functions, and the menu system is stupid. After years of use, when using different settings its still a pain. I have had it lock up ,and I have to restart..and guess what? The stupid thing defaults to the settings you last had when you turned the camera OFF, like from another shoot. So you loose all the settings. So if battery is out, you need to put your settings back ....Very unprofessional and thoughtless. I hope the viewfinder is better, and same with the screen!! When I pick up the 5D3 or5D4, its like a battleship that was designed for war...whatever you throw at it, it falls off and says give me more I will not stop. The A7R2 shutter sounds like its gonna croke and die at each click, like a complaining annoyance ....my 1Ds3 takes the cake on shutter sound...I mean that thing should be sampled and used in top music mixes....lol....but seriously....I am about to get the A&R3 and I hope I am not gonna be upset not spending so much more for upgrading my A&R2 instead of my 5D to the R5. I really want the R5, but the price I cannot justify, and I could care less about video.
