I agree! Great quality. I would only say your image thumbnails are letting you down a bit :( I think the font you use and the colour looks a little bit unprofessional? If I had judged the video on that alone, I may not have checked your videos? Maybe you might want to take a few ques from how other established TH-camrs do their thumbnails and other editing/ filming decisions? But looking at this one, I can tell you do an amazing job! Keep up your good work, you are going to go far, man! 😊
Hi anyone outta there if you guys are planning to buy an A7RII you should buy dummy battery with a huge power bank (30000MaH) it is about 26 times longer than the regular Sony batteries, just put 3xpower bank inside your bags ❤
As someone who runs a buy back service for Cameras and Smartphones I love how detailed you are to the pros and cons and why. I hope your channel expands. Well done man.
Great video, adressing all your cons as a A7r2 user since two years: - The noise is a non issue. ISO 6400 is my personal limit too, but: You will always have the 42MP in good and bad lighting, and they are fanstastic for noise reduction because of all the detail/MP. Above 6400, you can first denoise then resize the RAWs to 24MP and they will outperform the A7, to 12MP and outperform the A7s. - True. Tip: When shooting video, and you have a static scene, consider going into crop mode because it downsamples 5K readout to 4K. - I love!! the fact that the battery is small. I usually travel with two batteries for a day (and you should) but I only have to lift less weigth with my hands at any time. i don't "carry" unnecessary weigth with my arms. That's why I prefer it over the R3. The rest is something I fully agree with. But keep in mind you are getting a 42MP, 4K capable backlit 5 axis stabilized Full-Frame sensor for under 1k. A no brainer
Very good information, and thank you for sharing. I was unaware that in crop it oversampled from 5K. I will defiantly do some testing with that. Yeah batteries don't bother me either. I have big hands and the battery grip is a huge benefit for me. Two batteries in the grip last me most of the day for photos.
This video is incredibly well-made for someone whose channel is this new. It's nicely composed, not biased, straight-to-the-point, and was just overall very informative and interesting. I have subscribed and turned on all post notifications because as long as you keep up this video grind, you're destined to become a huge channel. Great job, keep it up.
This is such a good and honest review! I've set my sights on a back up camera, and an intro camera into the a7 series. This has helped inform my decision between the rii and sii
Best channel on TH-cam. Why? Because you teach and show spectacular landscape photography skills at A BUDGET which you can't find on TH-cam these days! You definitely deserve more subs and followers, sir!
Nicely done. A7rii is showing it's age for UI, speed and features, but the sensor is still up with the top dogs for IQ at similar resolution. Like you, I'll be keeping and using mine for a long time yet (despite having newer models). Worth noting that It's really good for all sorts of micro and macro togging too. And as a platform for playing with adapted legacy (or weird) glass. Etc...
Yes it does more then I need it for and I forget it was one of the first Sony’s that will interface with other brand lenses too. It is still an amazing camera.
This review was awesome. Buying first camera and swimming in info, trying to make a good decision! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and perspective, dude
Very late to this video, but I appreciate the insight and I loved seeing your photo examples especially of the Milky Way. Ever since around 2019 I pretty much dreamed of getting my hands on an A7rII or III, but I had to put it on the backburner. Now I've been selling off some other camera gear to go towards one and I have my eyes set on the II. Even though this video in itself is old, I have no major issues with the older Sony screens/etc. The bodies themselves and lenses far outweigh that for me. Just watching this and hearing you talk about the IBIS has got me psyched up. As someone who is naturally very 'shaky' I've had lower success rates in the past with hitting focus on APS-C bodies that didn't have any stabilization. I can't wait to get my hands on one of these monsters. Great video!
I am glad you enjoyed the video! Yes it is old, and also my most popular video by far, but I still use this camera as my main photography camera. I just cant justify the replacement yet. That and I really made a big push to video equipment. You cant go wrong with either one. You will enjoy it!
Fair review with spot on observations. Battery life is my biggest complaint, but luckily I have not used more than 2 batteries during my travels. I purchased this camera about 6 months ago for $1300 and the fact that you can still buy it new tells you that it is very capable camera after all these years.
This is a great review. I have the a7s as my first full frame camera, several years before getting the a7r ii when I decided I wanted more resolution (Pixel cell phones are also 12mp, like a7s). I still have the a7s and plan to convert it to full spectrum, but it mostly sits unused. I was worried that hand held shooting would be difficult with the A7R II, as I'd heard horror stories about the A7R, but. IBIS makes it a breeze. I sometimes think about upgrading to the a7r III, but selling a camera is a bit of a hassle and then I'd have to get all new batteries and jettison the battery compatibility with the a7s. This and a few other videos I've seen comparing cameras across generations make me think the money would be better spent on a premium lens, as I currently use some nice legacy manual focus film lenses and the 28-70 OSS and a Rokinon 35/2.8 pancake. I will say that i think the a7s is a little more of a joy to shoot with. All metal, including the dials, unlike the A7R II, which has some plastic dials. The A7S is smaller and has greater manual focus magnification of 7x/14x vs 6x/12x for the A7R II. (why did Sony do this).
Thanks for the comment, I love hearing others experiences with the cameras. I too stuggled with the idea of changing battery systems but after having an A7iii and just buying two extra batteries and a wall charger, I am no longer bothered by it. I wish they all used the same as it makes it easier, but the chargers and still much smaller for the mk2s. Eventually I will retire my A7Rii and buy a newer camera to replace it, the new ones are very nice, but I still don't see the benefit in image quality. Features yes, but at the end of the day I am mostly landscape with it and it works very well. Plus I always like using older tech then current, so does my wallet. Ive never seen a mk1 camera and did not know about the materials they used. This is interesting to me and would like to see one now.
A great review Malcolm. I have built a slow scan Super 8 digitiser. Do you think it can record single frames continuously at 1 to 2 frames per second without clogging the buffer. I would love to hear you comments. Regards, Brian.
Not totally sure on that but I would love to find out, I imagine it would do it, using the fastest card it can handle. It’s write speed is published info I think, can’t remember where I saw it, it would also matter if your using RAW. Just JPEG shouldn’t even be a question. Good luck and update us if you go for it.
Hi Malcolm, I asked you about buffering with the model Arii, but not wanting to take the risk, I bought a A7riii as Scott Schiller uses one on his slow scan digitizer. It is more expensive, but I have already invested a huge amount of money and time, it would be foolish to take a risk with the lesser model. I do so much appreciate you taking the trouble reaching out and answering my email. Thank you, you are special! Regards, Brian. Western Australia. 😊
@@brianmuhlingBUM That’s good to hear. I think overall, the mk3 is a much better camera and your right, it is more expensive but not terrible, specially when you have a purpose for it. I appreciate you updating us on what you figured out. Good luck and we will cya around!
I was looking at this camera, because of the fact that is seemed like a good entry into the full frame mirrorless camera for what you get at the price you can get it. The points you brought out really helped solidify my decision. The things you mentioned as strengths of the camera, is where most of my shooting is done, so I really appreciate it.
Great review. I don't agree on low light noise being bad. I made comparisons with my A7ii and the A7Rii had less noise despite more megapixels on the same sensor area. When I resized the 42 MP raw to a 24 MP DNG RAW and it's waaays better than the A7ii. The A7Rii sensor is backlit (BSI) like the A7iii sensor whereas the A7ii is not.
I agree the ISO low light is good compared to the A7ii. I suppose the majority of my work is done with long exposure that I don't use it for low light situations that need fast shutter speeds.
Such a helpful review. I second the fact that it was one of the most clear and concise reviews I've watched on a Sony camera and thanks to you I have a better understanding of what boxes I'll be looking to check on a different Sony model. Thanks, keep posting!
Just picked mine up today and so stoked to get after it after watching your really honest and thorough review! Awesome job man and thanks so much for posting! Btw, unrelated but if you ever wanted to knock it out of the park at a bar, you could crush some John C. Reilly voice impersonations! Happy Shooting boss
Great review. I just bought the a7rii brand new on Amazon. I have the a9ii for my fast moving objects, I have my a7iii for video and my a7rii for my landscape and storm chasing photography. Paired with the 16-35 GM and 24-70 GM lenses. Thinking on picking up a prime or the Sony telephoto lens. The a7rii is definitely still a great camera.
Thanks you answered all my questions... I strictly want a good photography camera. I do not care about video I have a a6400 for that. I was torn between this and the Nikon d810 for landscapes but I think this will be better.
Love my AZRll. I must have a good copy. The autofocus is insane. I do a lot of video never overheats. Picture quality superb and works great for my photographing sports. I photograph also skateboarders and camera keeps up. Also love the grain in high iso. Got mine for about $950 used.
Absolutely agree. I am using it for every thing not moving. For fast moving stuff, I use the A9 and for low ligth I have the A7S. It may change once I receive the ordred A1.
I just started to do paid work for realestate and I also sell prints of mostly landscapes. At $1300 new I grabbed a a7rII, I was a little hesitant due to its age, but I think it fits very well for my current needs. Considering I was using an old Canon T3i this is a HUGE upgrade for me. I was truly pushing that T3i to its limits and it managed to pump out some stunning photographs. Used Magic Lantern to greatly expand its capabilities over stock and streamline workflow. Though, my a7rII paired with my (just arrived) Sigma 14-24mm art lens should really expand my options and allow me to concentrate on the scene, not where I can place the tripod! Oh, real-estate jobs will take less time too!
Hello. Im also looking to start a real estate photography business and im about to get an A7rii. In your experience, how well is the A7rii performing in regards to real estate photography? Are the images sharp and bright with little to no noise? Is full frame more worth it than the crop sensor?
@@taishirgb6438 Its overkill for RE, RE is almost always shot on a tripod so you can set and forget the ISO. Anything full frame with a good wide angle zoom lens should do the trick.
to me, this is an excellent review: complete but concise, very close to everyday practice and unbiased. Thanks a lot for this. By the way, it helped me confirm my current choices, esp. for the high end: a7r II for top quality without compromise, a6500 for speed, quality and lightweight, RX100 IV for super lightweight and environtments where you don't want to be recognized as a photographer, but still want quality S23 Ultra for all cases where I don't have a camera with me (but still want quality) Thank you very much Malcolm 🙂
You got 500+ comments for your professional Knowledge of what you talking about and Down to the Earth great personality MS/Malcolm thank you for sharing bet late but late better than never 👌🏿😎
Fall in love with this channel from this video. Very comprehensive and useful! I was wondering if any TH-cam videos which can help me to understand the pros and cons of Sony A7r ii before I buy it. Here you go! Nice!! Subscribed right away to help your channel growing up.
I lusted after this camera when I was still limited to my LUMIX GH2 and GX7. When the price of the A7 came down, I bit. Full frame at last! And I loved the shots I got with my vintage Minolta primes. Fantastic landscapes. But these were mounted on a tripod. Finally, the A7RII started to come down from its "flagship" status and I was able to buy one new for around $1800. What a difference in hand held image quality with the Minoltas! The life cycle of these cameras astonishes me. What was once the flagship becomes faded glory. The GH2 was once a highly sought after camera. It was revolutionary. Way back when it had a fully articulated screen and an incredibly bright viewfinder. No camera ticks all the boxes. But I'll be satisfied with the A7RII for a long time.
I'm still using my A7Rii. I do wildlife photography using vintage manual glass because that's all I can afford. I have a manual focus 500mm f/4. Also, I use it for astro photography and landscape. Still going strong.
I am looking at the A7R II to use with vintage lenses. I am wondering if the 42MP is overkill for those old lenses? Will I regret all that resolution if the lenses are unable to deliver super sharp images? I that it has IBIS which is not available in the A7R or the A7
Hi and thanks for the question. I have used many vintage lenses on this camera and love the results. I feel they all seem soft and I figured it was just the lenses and not the camera. Check out my A7Rii video when I shoot a vintage 400mm lens on it. Also make sure you adjust the IBIS of the camera to the focal length of the lens you are using in the menu. It’s set to auto for native lenses, but you will need to adjust it for manual vintage lenses.
Some great vintage lenses I have use with the RII include a Minolta 35-70/3.5, Minolta 75-150, Minolta MD 50/2, Canon nFD 50/1.4, Tamron Adaptall-2 Macro 1:1 90/2.8, Vivitar 100/2.8 macro 1:1 (there are other varieties, including one with teeth on the side for dentist reference) which has more focus turns than the Tamron but also more purple fringing and weight, Olympus OM 100/2.8, Contax 80-200/4, and lovely to use push pull but corner smudgy Vivitar 28-90. The Minolta 35-70/3.5 in particular is an excellent lens and I suggest trying to stick to one legacy system so you save space in your camera bag and can change the lenses off the adapter.
Good vid. Picking one up this Friday for photography. Will be along side my GH5 that I use for video. Your vid reassured me that I’m making the right choice... I hope. 😁
Awesome find! I picked up mine last year for $1300 and a 14mm f2.8 lens. It also came with a bag of adapters which is nice because I'm interested in using vintage lenses
Thank you for this very well presented honest, and informative tutorial. Because of the price deduction and the fact that I am a Flickr buff who can recognize a Sony product landscape shot among others, I am about to plunge into a new A7 R ii. Your tutorial made up my mind. Thank you. Currently shoot EMI MIII and a Fuji X T3 and really enjoy the results that I get but whenever I see really great landscapes on Flickr , nine times out of ten they are Sony created images. Thanks again 03-20-2021..
Just bought one of these used the other day and I'm loving it so far, upgraded from an a6100. Great video! I agree w the other commenter that this channel is so professional. Subscribing :)
i have my fuji setup, but i just bought this myself for having landscape and out and about street photos. Read and watched every source before purchase. No regrets here. I love it. Agree with you in all the pros and cons, except one, it does 1080p 120fps in NTSC or 100fps in PAL mode both at 50mbps using 4.01 firmware. Thanks for the praise about this awesome camera! I`d like to ask, can you make a video on sensor cleaning? Which products you use and how to make it securely.
Thank you and glad the video was helpful. But I just double checked on the 1080 @ 120fps. The camera originally did not do 1080 @120fps and was advertised at 720P for 120fps. I have 4.01 firmware installed and just did a sample shot. If you right click the data file for the video and look at properties and then click details you will see the width/height of the file is 1280 X 720. As much as I wish it was true with the 4.01 firmware it still shoots 720P @120fps. I have the video about sensor cleaning in my plans, so subscribe so you don't miss that one. Thanks and happy shooting!
2 years ago I used this camera for a paid job Musical Festival, the main camera was a7III and I didn't know if the ar7rII would be the right choice as a second gear. I paired with the Sony 85mm f1.8 and honestly it surprised me, I didn't take many shots with this camera but they where all on focus and sharp. I also haven't had many problems with the noise, for me it did a fantastic job.
I have only seen it overheat in full sun shooting video. In studio it never has. But my main use is photography with this camera. Full sun all day in photo mode I have never had it overheat.
I am surpised that someone has not designed a fix for this. That would sell. I have not had a chance to see it myself, but from some posts I have seen and what seemed to help out was having the battery door open and having the LCD viewer away from the body.... like opened up. From one post I read this took care of the issue. Since the heat sink comes up to the eye piece one could design something that would attach something there too.
Do you know anything about this? In my Canon T7 I have in the menu, Portrait Mode 1, 2, 3, 4 as I remember. I always use 2. This setting adds distortion to the photo similar to that of a Pro Myst 1/4 Black. I like it and use it all the time. Now that I have the A7Rii I am wondering if that camera has a similar setting for Portraits. What can you tell me about this?
I've been doing Photography for only a year and when my nikon D3400 died on me, I upgraded to the A7RII which I got used for $1300. I absolutely love this body and I don't plan on replacing it anytime soon. I might pickup an A6000 so I can have a cheap backup that can shoot 11fps, but besides that this camera is more than I could ask for.
I'm in between the A7R II and the a6400 as my first camera. Which do you believe would do me better? I will mostly do portraits and car photos, with very little video inbetween.
The A7Rii will produce a better image then the a6400. It will be great for cars sitting still. But if you plan on photographing them moving, the a6400 is way better for that. For portrait work the A7Rii
I have had an A7R II for the same time as you. There are some good lens adaptors for E-Mount Sonys, so I can still use my old Canon and Pentax glass, and still get image stabilisation because of IBIS. Is it a perfect camera for all seasons? No, but I’m an amateur photographer who occasionally does video, and my A7R II is better than any iPhone camera for what I do.
I feel the auto focus would suffer. I am always fighting focus on the A7Rii vs my other cameras. I would hope the Riii would do better but I have never used it.
Its a good choice, I know it is a lot better at some things then the 5d, however from what I have heard, the ruggedness of the A7Rii is not as good as the 5d, but it is much smaller and lighter.
Did you manage to use the Metabones Mark V with the A7R2, this is what I use with my Canon EF glass and works perfectly, dont ask me why, but this is one of the few camera models that just work perfect together for taking still images. I also have the MC-11 adapter, but does not work as good as the Metabones, if you dont have it I highly recommend you try it.
I have not tried the those adapters. I am looking for a Sony A-mount adapter to adapt my old Minolta AF glass. I have heard that the Mets ones does work very well. It’s a great option if you have EF glass.
I'm looking to get a full frame camera. It does surprise me though that two people now have said that 3200 is good and 6400 is their limit. That's only one stop more than my limits on M43. I would use 6400 with something like dxo though. So I was expecting a bit more. But it looks a great camera. Just the right size and price used. I'm looking for a high megapixel camera and this seems a good option for me.
I don't think you will be disappointed by the camera. I have recently found anew liking to the higher ISO that I usually stayed away from using Luminar. The noise reduction in the right situation is good. If you want a high megapixel camera for a great price. This would be it. However lately I have been recommending the A7III to more people because it too has come way down in price and has a-lot more modern features that make it a great camera too.
I got my 7 r 2 on its close out sale at a really good price for new.i knew it was old tech but that the sensor was still one of the best I bought like 6 batteries to deal with the battery issue and use it mostly for landscape occasional portraits.. The only thing that is really irking me is when I magnify a shot to see if it’s sharp and critically in focus it takes literally 5 seconds to render it and come on screen. Is that your finding,is it possible to get it faster with a different SDcard? Thanks for the video.
I’ll look into that and see if my uhs2 card is faster. It won’t be as fast as my uhs 2 card but it will allow the camera to operate at its fastest capability
As a 3 years user who shoots both photo and video with it, I find this camera fantastic, and I agree on every point of your video! If I can add just two things I hate soooo much, I'd say the fact that when the (very limited) buffer is full, the camera is unusable, and the screen that dim a lot, when shooting 4K, making you in trouble for nailing exposition and framing... Good job, Sir, nice long term review!
I had the same feeling as you regarding the af speed until... I screwed that 50mm1.2gm into it. UNVELIEVABLE! Shooting a soccer game and got me 95% of perfectly focused shots, whereas with my 35mm sigma only had like 30%. The lens makes a big difference here.
Well done Malcolm.... I’ve had my RII for over a year now and still haven’t had the real opportunity to go out and travel. Was out in Dallas this past weekend but everything was still pretty much shut down but hopefully we will getting back on road soon.
Malcolm, this takes great 1080 video. Why do you not think this is a video camera also? I would be taking a photos or videos to be published on TH-cam or my websites. I never use auto anything. In video, no auto. If you want focusing move the ring on the lens. People are really spoiled these days. 1080p is fine for the web. Who needs 120fps? Seriously! Also, I found this: Set your camera to RAW+jpeg, high iso NR to off. The write delay before you can hit "play" after your shot (if auto review is off) or "magnify" after your shot (if auto review is on) without seeing the dreaded "writing to memory card" message is then reduced from about 2-3 s if hi iso NR is on to less than half a second if high iso NR is off (fast card timings). Use a jpeg size of 11 or 18 mpix, and the magnifying delay to check focus is also gone as you hit "magnify" - 18 mpix is plenty enough to check focus on a 42MP shot. One of the single worst things about the A7Rm2 is how long it takes to review an image (zoom in) when you zoom in to verify its sharp. But this takes 3 to 5 seconds to perform. While experimenting I discovered a way to get round this annoyance. When you click the magnify button when reviewing pictures, it can can take anywhere between 3 to 5 seconds for the A7Rm2 to respond so as to check critical focus on photos. Its the worst when you're trying to be fast! The fix is to set your camera to RAW&JPEG and then set the Image size to "S: 11M" (Camera settings page 1) Now when you take a photo you will get the full 42mp RAW, but the camera now uses the Small Jpeg for the preview and there's virtually no delay!
Very useful information, thank you for committing. I did also later learn that if you shoot video in crop mode in 4k the camera will over sample from 5k too. But from what I read this only happens in crop (APS-C or super 36 mode ON) mode.
This is the problem with these cameras. I can get a A7ii for $700 and a A7Rii for $900, but why? What happens when I go to edit the photos or the videos? I have not made up my mind yet. I think that people should worry about becoming better photographers then worry about gear. I mean, think about lighting! Think about the plot, the story. Go to the museum and look at the composition and lighting in the paintings of the old artists. AND NOW, I am getting caught up in this tech BS.
I agree that people should learn more about photography first before worrying about that camera they get. Not really sure what your question is about the A7ii vs the A7Rii but sounds like you have used both of them. I know for photos a don't need the 42MP over the 24MP for most of my work. But in regards to your comments about the speed that is a frustration it sounds like, So why are you trying to work so fast? I only ask because it brings up the point of which camera is best for your work flow. I don't believe the A7Rii is a fast camera in todays standards. That is why I think it is better suited for the photographer learning or the professional taking their time to get the perfect shot. That being said I think it is okay to geek out over the specs and models with all these fantastic cameras on the market. It's todays equivalent of "which film should you use" in your film camera. It is so easy to reproduce looks of film from a RAW image. The thing these new cameras give us to work with now instead of different grains or noise is the ability to get more information in an image so when we develop those images in post we can dictate exactly the mood we want to express or story we want to tell. This might be cheating a bit but I see it only as a path to learn better composition, because we are forced to examine our own images so much more than with film. We can modify and change the image easily opening our minds up to make better photographs and reach the ultimate goal of getting it right in camera the first time. The cameras technical ability also allows us focus more on our shot, our story, our composition then ever before because the technology in the camera is their to help us handle the technical stuff, leaving us with our ideas and stories to tell more then ever before. I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to express your feeling's on the subject. At the end of the day we each are given our own path to follow, and the only thing that really matters is how we feel about what we are doing for ourselves. Thank you and remember, in todays world the tech does matter and that is why we get wrapped up in it. All the best
I am considering buying one of them. I have never used either. I have spent a couple of weeks reading and watching videos on them. I am not new to photography or video. However, I am not a person to buy a car new off the lot either. I only use vintage lenses (like I would use vintage Neumann mics in the studio, for their color) and even with my 2000 PD150 DVCam I never liked AUTO anything in video. I shot or had people shoot my band from 1997 to 2007 as I was on stage. You can see these on my TH-cam channel. I had to deal with stage lighting. I white balanced before the show with a large white board in the stage lighting. Sometimes that lighting would change during the show. Then I would need to correct this as much as possible using CS2. I like using CS2 for creating or reinforcing a mood. So I am looking at what I will need these days where I will be making videos demo'ing my products. Other than that I will be creating photos. Photos not intended for billboards, but intended for the internet. I do not try to capture reality. I try to capture a feeling or tell a story. I do this in the recording studio too. Let me put it this way, I am not a DIRECT TO DISK person, but more a person who uses a recording studio to paint a picture like an oil painting. I currently use a Canon T7, but come from film cameras and film processing for photos going back to 1960. I am looking for a tool to help with that. That is my story.
With Sony the multiplier is 1.5x. I think Canon is a 1.6x. So a 50 mm lens will give you a zoom equivalent of 75mm on an APS-C but the visual effect/compression of the focal length will remain at 50mm. All lenses are labeled as a 35mm focal length, regardless if it is aps-c or full frame.
Malcolm, in the A7Rii menu system I found A) the ON/OFF for the Stabilization, and B) an adjustment for the Stabilization which is in mm's starting with 8mm. I am assuming that is In Body. Why is that there? Have you any experience with using this?
The A6400 will be a faster and easier to use to learn on. It will have more modern features. But if you want better image quality and a better camera, then I would Pick the A7Rii
Thanks @@MalcolmWalker, its the difficult choice to me. Because, i wanted to learn about photography, and starting to search another camera, but im stuck with them. Does i pick the a7rii or the a6400. because i need the cross over of their features, but didn't have more budget if i try to pick the higher version that have the all features i need it. I just wanted for human interest & journalism photography and little bit of landscape
@ I would Try and get an A7iii then, a7iii has the modern features of the a6400 and full frame, you wont be disappointed and you wont miss the extra megapixels.
Out of about 10 reviews I’ve seen this is by far the most profound and grounded one. Very good and felt job. Thank you!❤
Thank you! I hope it helps you out.
Quality video, while watching I assumed this was a bigger channel, very professional and well spoken
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you liked it!
Yeah, I did not look at subscriber account until I saw this comment! Well done.
If you just do landscapes and portraits, this is the only camera you will need for years, just have a couple of spare batteries.
You can get Duracell batteries for the A7R MKII and they last just as long for a fraction of the price too :)
@@doctormarazanvose4373 I can vouch for Duracell batteries also, got two for my a7r and they're great
Hi anyone outta there if you guys are planning to buy an A7RII you should buy dummy battery with a huge power bank (30000MaH) it is about 26 times longer than the regular Sony batteries, just put 3xpower bank inside your bags ❤
I love how realist this guy is. 8:13 more people need to follow this review style with EVERYTHING they do. thanks man
As someone who runs a buy back service for Cameras and Smartphones I love how detailed you are to the pros and cons and why. I hope your channel expands. Well done man.
Danced with a lot of cameras & keep circling back to my A7RII. Good insights, Malcolm. Thanks!
Excelent presentation! I own the A7IV, A7II and the A7RII, which I love with passion!
Thank you! Some good luck it sounds like.
Great video, adressing all your cons as a A7r2 user since two years:
- The noise is a non issue.
Hey man I hope you reply, seems like you’re familiar with it. How is it with sports photos or high speed stuff?
This video is incredibly well-made for someone whose channel is this new. It's nicely composed, not biased, straight-to-the-point, and was just overall very informative and interesting. I have subscribed and turned on all post notifications because as long as you keep up this video grind, you're destined to become a huge channel. Great job, keep it up.
Thank you for the kind words and for subscribing.
Agree. Excellent clear vodeo !
I just brought one for photos… wanted a high MP camera! 📷 excited to use it
Relevant to me. Thanks for the effort and sharing. Thumbs up. 👍🏻
Great video about this camera which I bought a couple of months ago. With high ISO shots, go the first photo menu (6) and set it to High ISO NR.
Blown away by the small number of subscribers.. good luck man
Thank you, it’s going…
I've been looking for a backup camera. Your review was Top Notch 👌. I'll definitely be considering this.
This was very informative, no bull and no distractions, thanks!
Thank you!
Love your video. I have R2 and original A7. COngrats !
Legendary video.cheers dude
This is such a good and honest review!
I've set my sights on a back up camera, and an intro camera into the a7 series.
This has helped inform my decision between the rii and sii
Glad it was helpful. I think it is a great back up camera.
Best channel on TH-cam. Why? Because you teach and show spectacular landscape photography skills at A BUDGET which you can't find on TH-cam these days! You definitely deserve more subs and followers, sir!
Wow, thank you for the kind words Mohammad El-Mohammadi.
Fantastic summary! I'll get one this week. Upgrading from the original a7. So looking forward to it after watching your video!
It’s a great camera, I still use mine regularly. New video about to release I’m shooting with it.
Only recommendation is a body cap to protect from dust. But great video and so happy I bought mine for the same reasons!
Thank you for the nice comment, I hope it helps and if you land on the A7Rii, you won't be disappointed.
bought mine 3 years ago, its so sharp and clear that i take longer editing imperfections..
I like when you actually laid down. Great video!
Fair review with spot on observations. Battery life is my biggest complaint, but luckily I have not used more than 2 batteries during my travels. I purchased this camera about 6 months ago for $1300 and the fact that you can still buy it new tells you that it is very capable camera after all these years.
Very true.
Thanks for the review. Just bought one new for a great price. perfect for my landscape and architectural photography.
It is a perfect camera for that, you will really enjoy it.
Thanks Malcolm, it could be a matter of suck it and see. I will keep you informed.
Good luck and we will cya around!
it was possitive for this bloody olsen camera . tanks mate . 🌹🙏🙏
Glad I could help. It’s a great camera and I still use mine a lot. Yeah still prefer it for photos over the A7iii.
Excellent video, it is helping me with my decision on which camera to buy.
Fantastic video, thank you for reminding me why I bought this camera!
Great video. I was trying to add a second camera to my single camera and was deciding what I could get on a budget. Thanks for the insight. 👍🏼
I love this camera. Get me a Voigtlander or two and you're set.
That is all you need!!!
👍 100% agree
I agree the ISO low light is good compared to the A7ii. I suppose the majority of my work is done with long exposure that I don't use it for low light situations that need fast shutter speeds.
Such a helpful review. I second the fact that it was one of the most clear and concise reviews I've watched on a Sony camera and thanks to you I have a better understanding of what boxes I'll be looking to check on a different Sony model. Thanks, keep posting!
Glad it helped! There is a lot of nice Sonys these days. Thank you for watching!
Excellent video. thank you. wish there was this much useful info about any camera I thought of buying.

Glad I could help!
Love my AZRll. I must have a good copy. The autofocus is insane. I do a lot of video never overheats. Picture quality superb and works great for my photographing sports. I photograph also skateboarders and camera keeps up. Also love the grain in high iso. Got mine for about $950 used.
thanks for the video. Im looking at a a high resolution camera for surf and skate photography. I think I'm gonna look for one.
Go for it!
Thank you for a really practical honest review.
Your welcome
By the way, it helped me confirm my current choices, esp. for the high end:
a7r II for top quality without compromise,
a6500 for speed, quality and lightweight,
RX100 IV for super lightweight and environtments where you don't want to be recognized as a photographer, but still want quality
S23 Ultra for all cases where I don't have a camera with me (but still want quality)
Thank you very much Malcolm 🙂

Glad it helped, you won’t be disappointed with it, specially coming from the older A7S. I still use mine as my primary photo camera.
thank you for this detailed video - it helps me for my decision to buy this camera

if you compare it with the A6600 which is good for street photography and low light photography
Absolutely, some of the features of the new cameras are great to have but this camera still holds its own even today. It really is an amazing camera!
I'm still using my A7Rii. I do wildlife photography using vintage manual glass because that's all I can afford. I have a manual focus 500mm f/4. Also, I use it for astro photography and landscape. Still going strong.
I too use vintage glass. I have a video shooting the Rii with an old manual 400mm
I hope. 😁

Currently shoot EMI MIII and a Fuji X T3 and really enjoy the results that I get but whenever I see really great landscapes on Flickr , nine times out of ten they are Sony created images. Thanks again 03-20-2021..

@@TheWay-up777 the eye auto focus in continuous af was my main reason for upgrading at the time. But it’s worth it for so many more reasons.

i have my fuji setup, but i just bought this myself for having landscape and out and about street photos.
@@MalcolmWalker You are right, just checked and it is 720. what a bummer.
anyways, i subd already and thanks for the reply.
It’s a great 2nd body if your budget isn’t huge.
I love my mark 2! I have the A7riv also but will never sell the Mark 2! Still use it also
I still use my mk2 too, its been awhile since I have been on TH-cam regularly, but I still shoot with it.
Thank you. Very helpful video.
Your welcome.
What is the resolution of you're shooting in apsc mode with this?
It is 18Mp
I read a lot about a over-heating problem with this camera. Have you ever had this problem. If so how did you get around it or work with it?
That was my original set up with the A6000. It compliments the Rii well.
How would this camera fare for car photography vs the A7 Riii. I do shoot rollers and stills. Occasionally landscape and rarely portraits as well.
I feel the auto focus would suffer. I am always fighting focus on the A7Rii vs my other cameras. I would hope the Riii would do better but I have never used it.
@@MalcolmWalker I do really appreciate the reply and information!
Thinking of switching from 5d mk2 to this one.
Its a good choice, I know it is a lot better at some things then the 5d, however from what I have heard, the ruggedness of the A7Rii is not as good as the 5d, but it is much smaller and lighter.
Can you talk about your sensor cleaning . Yes - I was stressing out watching you with that camera with no lens or body cap on it.
th-cam.com/video/xjm-X0vIkzA/w-d-xo.html
The simple answer is YES - 👊👊💥
Did you manage to use the Metabones Mark V with the A7R2, this is what I use with my Canon EF glass and works perfectly,
dont ask me why, but this is one of the few camera models that just work perfect together for taking still
images. I also have the MC-11 adapter, but does not work as good as the Metabones, if you dont have it
I highly recommend you try it.
I’m new and what does the buffer mean?
@@suneagle99 it's the time your camera needs to save the files into the SD card, after a burst
Yes I am hoping to get out for another night shoot as milky way season comes on. Have not decided were to go yet.
Malcolm,
this takes great 1080 video.
The fix is to set your camera to RAW&JPEG and then set the Image size to "S: 11M" (Camera settings page 1)
Now when you take a photo you will get the full 42mp RAW, but the camera now uses the Small Jpeg for the preview and there's virtually no delay!
If using a full frame lense on a APSC body times the focal length by 1.6
With Sony the multiplier is 1.5x.
Malcolm,
in the A7Rii menu system I found A) the ON/OFF for the Stabilization, and B) an adjustment for the Stabilization which is in mm's starting with 8mm. I am assuming that is In Body. Why is that there? Have you any experience with using this?
If using manual or old vintage glass you will set that to what ever your lens is so you can take advantage the IBIS with that old glass.
I see. OK. I only use vintage lenses. So that is for me.
bought one because of you!
Awesome, you will enjoy it!
You sound like the actor John C. Reilly! Nice review too!
I think someone said that before too. I’ll have to check that out.
extremely underrated channel
Thank you, Hope it helped!
Between the a7rii or the a6400 for a beginner which one would you pick?
The A6400 will be a faster and easier to use to learn on. It will have more modern features. But if you want better image quality and a better camera, then I would
Pick the A7Rii
Thanks @@MalcolmWalker, its the difficult choice to me. Because, i wanted to learn about photography, and starting to search another camera, but im stuck with them. Does i pick the a7rii or the a6400. because i need the cross over of their features, but didn't have more budget if i try to pick the higher version that have the all features i need it. I just wanted for human interest & journalism photography and little bit of landscape
@ I would
Try and get an A7iii then, a7iii has the modern features of the a6400 and full frame, you wont be disappointed and you wont miss the extra megapixels.
Great vid! I can live with those cons. Besides, mostly use manual focus! Hope I can get a hold of one.
You shouldn't have a problem getting one. Plenty of them out there.
Actually considering the 7r but that one seem harder to find
