As someone who is also a runner and is starting to care more about privacy, my personal favorite is using a fitness based watch (big Garmin Forerunner fan :) ) Loved the video!! Do more fitness stuff
Just bought a Garmin Venu behause of your recommendation. Its awesome and i will never go back to my Apple Watch S2. Thanks for your Videos, they really helped me get into the world of Privacy.
I love that you made this video. I've been looking for HRV monitors, like Whoop bands, etc but have been worried about privacy. This video has given me hope that I can find an alternative out there with a bit more research. Thanks! Please do more fitness privacy vids/reviews!
This video is great. The editor has done an amazing job here. I’d love if you did more health and fitness related videos, even if it isn’t directly related to most of the channels content :)
I've never thought of fitness trackers or smart watches as 'just an apple watch'.. I care about privacy, value and not being locked in closed ecosystems; so why would I ever touch an apple product? Unlike the trend these days I see excessive convenience as a trap used to lock people in bubbles and gain more control over them (and put all their data in one box)
If you sync the watch with the phone, how do you not have a garmin account? You said this towards the end that you don't use an account. I have a fenix6 and very interested. Thanks for the video. It made me feel even better about my purchase.
@@techlore My mistake. It was at 8:49 but it seems you were just stating the option that you do not need an account. I was confused when you mention it so much that when it got to your personal recommendation it threw me off lol. Thanks so much for responding and for your videos on privacy.
@@techlore OH man! I'm so glad I waited. The Fenix was on sale for 150 off and as soon as I bought, Garmin released beta firmware on the new Sleep Tracking metrics from Firstbeat. So now you can get sleep data on the watch and no longer need to sync with Garmin 😄.
I know this is a bit late, but I was wondering: Does anyone happen to know whether the Garmin Venu Sq needs a account or not? and manual pc syncing? I'm not much of a sports person and I'm more interested on the Daily Health/Vitals tracking, but I haven't found a way to do it with privacy in mind. and the "fancier" garmin are outside my price range.
Do Garmin and Polar watches support tracking for weight training/weightlifting? I do olympic weightlifting and I've noticed that most smartwatches and fitness trackers usually cater to cardio based exercise.
Garmin has a weightlifting mode and just a “general exercise” which will track things like heart rate and try to calculate calories off movement. Not sure how good it is
@@techlore Thanks for letting me know that Garmin has that feature. I'll check them out. Trying to escape the Apple iOS ecosystem is harder than I thought.
There are issues with AsteroidOS as a fitness tracking OS. The devs have the mindset that the purpose is smartwatch centric, so notifications, utility apps, and basic watch functions work very well, but to this day, fitness tracking is an afterthought. For instance the HRM app is just a hello world number on a screen that doesn't update. As basic as imaginable. I've actually tried to have a conversation with them about this, but they seem content to leave things as they are. Added to this, you are restricted by not having low level access to the hardware, because this type of solution, while amazing, uses blobs from the original OS to function, so you're stuck with the API calls you're allowed to make. This means HRV or anything like that is a no no. There is still possibility that someone will come along and develop some nice fitness apps for it, but don't hold your breath, it's been static for 3 years now. Shame because this is the way forward - linux on your device.
Yeah, i know this is a 7 month old video, so techlore may not see this comment. I use Garmin's Live Track and Incident Reporting tool to give my wife peace of mind when I go on 3-5 hour bike rides. I don't suppose there's some sort of privacy-based workout software that reports my workouts without losing privacy...
I have a Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and a pixel 3a. The official Samsung app for fitness kills the battery. Are there any apps open source that can Sync my data from the Gear S3? Sorry for my bad english
Ope, you can tell how serious HaCkErMaN business this video is going to be by the use of the Guy Fawkes mask which has totally never been done before in any sort of cliche way at all ever.
Don’t you worry the content of the Garmin devices is not encrypted so anyone who will find your lost watch or have a 10min access can download all your Heath related data, routes, routines or see your addresses? Also you sync data to Garmin cloud which which was hacked and attacked with ransomware, but you still trust the company? Why? What open source software can load Garmin files?
Maybe with just a few more flashes this video could be epic level annoying. I'm not going to subject my eyes to this. Some of us need our screen time without eye strain!
@@richtofen4888 Guess again, some of us just work long hours. Perhaps you're a snowflake slacker? Btw, you can look it up about brain activity types. Those who think the least enjoy over-stimulation from shiny objects, bizarrely painted houses and general gaudiness. While people with active minds prefer more serene scenes and conservative visuals. Now, try again with your total lack of creativity in making the grandpa insult. I'm sure you can do better if you work at it.

Just wondering what happened at the 9:50 (not exact but within 10 seconds)? The screen went weird, blackout, weird symbols etc.

song name please?
Any chance of an updated version of this? I think it could be a very useful series that discusses newest models each year.

I use my cheap casio f91w stopwatch for my run .... I usually run at known location ..so I know the distance ...
I was interested in the oura rung until I realized how much data collection I was opting into with no control.
Editing = Amazing

Wow this was so helpful even a year later! Thanks Henry!
Loved the video, really helped me decide towards looking into getting a Garmin watch!
Great to hear!

Often people with low activity in their brains enjoy wild colors and flashes, etc.. Enjoy.
Okay C.
I'd love to see an updated version including food tracking
Great video, loved the editing.
I've got the garmin forerunner 245. It is great, but can you access the sleeping features on the watch only?
Great video! Good to see you out of the office 😃👍

I do use an account, where was that implied? You definitely don’t need to though. (Which is the best part)

That’s sweet. The Fenix is an awesome watch, just incredibly pricey so that deal sounds very much worth it
Great work guys
Exactly what I was looking for ❤
Cries in Samsung watch and Samsung health app... Great apps and hardware, bad privacy policy.

I bet hoka lol
GPXsee, Turtle Sport and other open source projects work well to check activity recordings (speed, altitude, ...) on Windows PC.
OK, now you have to tell us your pr's. You can't leave us hanging!!!
