Despite the numerous negative reviews and high cost, the influencer continues to heavily promote the Apple Watch Ultra, blindly hyping it up to their followers as a must-have device. Crazy!
I have used the Ultra for roughly 77 hours [start at 97% on 09/28/22 @ 07:00] with consistent usage (text, phone, compass, Wayfinder, Shazam, steps app & sleep) the battery is currently sitting at 17% [end 10/01/22 @ 00:18].
Oh I didn’t Athlytic had gotten so sofisticated it looks comparable to Garmin’s offerings. Workoutdoors is amazing once you set it up and the developer has already mentioned that is working on an update for the AW Ultra and another down the line to take advantage of the always on display and WatchOS 9.
Dear Chase the Summit, I know you pretty much own so many of its alternative softwares, Fitbit, Garmin, Whoop, and Oura. Can you wear them for the next five days and see the correlation of the readiness score and sleep score between those. Then we will know how they can slack up.
honestly, if it wasn't for these 2 app recommendations, i probably would've sold my apple watch. i was so underwhelmed when i got it thinking "that's it?" but thankfully these 3rd party apps really step in and cover the gap left by apple. now the watch makes more sense to me, it's not the watch itself or the readings it takes, it's really a platform for other apps and devs to make use of and create their own version of a smart fitness watch. so instead of buying different watches for diff purposes, you buy one watch and make it focus on different purposes
I've used Apple Watches for years. About 6 months ago I was training for Chicago marathon and I was afraid my Apple Watch battery wouldn't last. I am. a 6 hour marathoner. I switched to Garmin Forerunner 955. Big switch from apple. But after a bit of a learning curve, it was awesome for runs. Stable as can be. No glitches. No problems. Heart rate amazingly accurate for wrist. GPS awesome, even in Chicago Marathon. But after 6 months I got tired of trying to tell the Garmin to remind me to buy coffee, etc. I was so much in the apple ecosystem that, as awesome as the Garmin was, I missed the cellular capabilities and integration with other apple features that I had with my Apple Watch. I even was considering wearing one on each wrist, but figured that that was ridiculous and would screw up apple health. Finally last week after reading great reviews of the Ultra, I sold my Garmin and went back to apple. I can say I am underwhelmed at best. Yes I have reminders, calls, and other apple features again. But runs are so damned frustrating. HR is all over the place. Apple doesn't give me the summery of my days achievements etc in a nice and condensed way as Garmin did. Integration with other apps and services is terrible. I will stay with the Apple Watch because I am enslaved to the apple ecosystem with iMac, MacBook, iPads, and iPhone. But as a sports watch, I miss my 6 month affair with Garmin. The reviews of the Apple Ultra were, like so much with Apple, hyperbole and plain BS. I am barely more happy with the Apple Watch Ultra than I was with my Apple Watch 7. It is great for everyday life. But for running it sucks. And any review that suggested it is a great sports watch is BS. Garmin still reigns in that realm. But I'm happy I can still remind myself to pick up a loaf of bread after work with Siris help. But pain in the butt to try to get her to help me with running data.
Apple should just buy Workoutdoors and integrate the functionality into the Watch. Apart from the longevity of the battery it kills competition. It would make it a fantastic sports watch and it’s already the best smartwatch by far.👍
I disagree. I love the WorkOutdoors app but it can be kinda overwhelming to get it customized to you. One of Apple’s biggest selling points is ease of use which includes simplistic apps that anyone can use. Leave the more advanced apps in the AppStore for people who need them.
The next features of Workoutdoors are AOD, Action Button and Navigation. The developer is coding hard to present these feature in the next time. Make a test end of this year and you will see what Workoutdoors is. The best App for Trailrunner and other sports.
As a (temporary) workaround, you could map a shortcut to the action button, which starts the Workoutdoors app. A small guide on how to work with shortcuts: th-cam.com/video/QICY3IXHk7w/w-d-xo.html. (could be useful for other apps as well)
I use both apps and they have changed the way I use my Apple Watch. Love workoutdoors and it allows me to use a heart rate strap and power meter pedals with my Apple Watch showing watts and cadence on the screen. Awesome. Great video again.
Athlytic is THE BEST. Been using it for the past couple of months and it's been such a helpful tool! If you're an athlete and use an apple watch you're silly to not use Athlytic!
WatchOS 10 will be able to do a lot of new things! For many athletes one of the most important features is the opening of the API for 3rd party training programs like TrainingPeaks. With TP, many athletes realize the communication to the trainer and he creates the plans, for example, for running intervals. These had to be programmed manually or run with another app. This is possible from WatchOS 10. In addition, you can pair Bluetooth sensors such as watt crank or cadence.
Thanks für the Athlytics tipp ... The App does not need an account and does not log or send any data! Very nice attitude in this telemetry-loaded times.
Great video, question from a Garmin user, on Apple Watch if I want to launch a run, do I use the apple app, athlytic or workoutdoors? Or does it even matter? I’m a bit confused. Thanks.
Hi, I moved from Garmin to an AWU2. I mainly use Workoutdoors for running. I’ve set the app to the shortcut button so when I go for a run, just press the orange button, then start and off you go…👍
Don’t be sorry about the length of your videos. They’re packed with good information. I’m really eager for my Ultra to arrive. If it were t for a problem with my Apple Pay app disconnecting melgross credit cards, I would have gotten mine on sept 21st. Sigh, five minutes and I’m put back a month. Oh well. I didn’t know about these apps, and I’m pretty excited by them. I’m getting them in anticipation, but won’t set them with my Watch 7. That’s the really great thing about Apple’s products. If they don’t do something when you get them, they will, somehow.
I am trying to find a way on the ultra 2 or if there’s an app that displays heart rate percentage… not beats per minute. It’s so much easier to use percentage of my effort vs my beats/minute
Just received mine a few days ago. Love the build quality and, watching some of the other content creators bash it with hammers and drag it behind cars, the durability is very impressive to say the least. For me, a HUGE miss for this watch is the lack of a barometer complication and pressure trend graph. All of my Garmin and Suunto watches have this feature. It is a lifesaver in the backcountry for weather trend analysis. For me, this will be a desk diver until I see a functional and useful barometric function. Thanks a bunch for your videos. They are all very informative and helped me make my purchase decision!
I think I found a setting to turn off the countdown or increase it. Check in the settings, I think it’s in there somewhere. Agree action button via shortcut or another way would be great too.
Thanks for another great review. I will definitely check out WO for all the reasons you mention and one important one you did not pick up, 'cause you are too young! I wear reading glasses. I don't run with them. One of my frustrations with my Fenix6 is that I can only read the largest digit. Even worse, sometimes Garmin pops up a dialogue box before the run. I can never read it. I am looking forward to trying an app I can see on a run. Thanks
Thank you very much for the tips. The first app is wonderful. I wanted this for the Apple Watch for a long time, and this one is the one I was looking for so long.
My ultra-distance sport is cycling. On multi day trips I carry an Anker brick so battery life not an issue. (No real weight gain as I no longer need to carry phone)
One of Apple’s strong points is the third party app’s. I have a ultra on order so haven’t tested any apps, but one that I use on my phone for hiking is Outdooractive and its compatible with watch os. Don’t know if it logs all the sensors of the Apple Watch and so on but its a great app to find and plan hiking routs and other activities.
Literaly an hour before I watched your vid I was trying to solve the nav issue and found out the workoutdoors LoL.. Made the purchase, good to confirm it's not a mistake.
@@savagedriver1967 you can take phone calls and answer text messages, emails without the phone nearby. Essentially full internet access. While this might not seem like much you realize how valuable communicating on a watch can be. When I go on training runs it’s so much easier than having to answer family messages. Coros and Garmin try to have similar features but their solutions frankly are subpar and for example their messaging features only really work with Android phones and sadly the experience is not as well designed.
The only thing WorkOutdoors needs is always on display. I would happily pay for the app again for this functionality. Every time the screen pauses to show you the time, it takes you right out of your flow.
Great review! I’m an ultra runner that’s previously used both Garmin and Whoop for over three years. Made the jump to AWU a few months ago. Like you said, best smart watch. No question. However, I still find Garmin superior as an athletic watch. I was not surprised by this. I made the switch bc 1) I was tired of paying for Whoop’s subscription model. It’s recovery and sleep functionality is excellent but real time athletic data is terrible 2) I wanted the smart functionality of AWU. I’m willing to sacrifice athletic watch performance. I like WorkOutdoors. It’s great. But they need Action Button pause-stop capability. Removing my winter gloves each time I stop to press the watch face is annoying. I’m excited by the App Store ecosystem potential as AWU takes on Garmin, Coros and others!
Based on your in-depth knowledge and outstanding video I have purchased both of these though I have had Work Outdoors for a couple of years now, and yes, the action button will allow you to start an activity right away. You have me as a constant follower. This is the kind of content that i can benefit from so much.
"Maybe they are terrible people. I hope not" - love it :) Both apps solve most of the problems of athletes (recovery mode, offline maps). And the pricing is ridiculously cheap.
This is the review I had been waiting for all along! There are way too many desktop reviewers nowadays so it's nice to see someone going out and testing this on 3rd party apps.
The action button can now be programmed to start a workout and other things. Swipe along the bottom of the map screen to change screens otherwise you will just move the map around.
I saw you hiking in the woods for ski touring. I was just wondering if the ultra works for it? Does apple have any workout mode made for it? I love ski touring and I was wondering if the ultra is any good for my winter hobby.
Man, you made me spend money and I don't even have the watch yet. :-D Download both and can't wait to get my watch in a week. Looking forward to using the map for my hiking and biking
Do you have a tip how to use Workoutdoors useful for running? I'm trying for 1 week to find out with which setting (GPS, Health, Pedometer) I can display the current pace. With my Garmin Fenix 3 I had a field with the 3 second pace via GPS and that was great. Have tested with GPS and Health but the values are disastrous and not usable. The pace jumps within 3 seconds from 5:20/min to 6:35/min and that no matter what datafield. Currently, the Apple Watch is only used to record a run, read pace values or even intervals are unfortunately not possible.
Hi there! Very nice review . Did you notice anything strange in athlytic metrics ?? it gave me a 47,8 vo2 max when i did 3 activities within athlytic app , and apple watch gives me 34 vo2 max 2 months now… also these were indoor activities, and apple watch health app states that vo2 max is calculated in outdoor activities.
Amazing video! I have just switched to an Apple Watch Ultra from a Garmin Fenix 6x and I'm really pleased I have found these apps to make it a better fitness watch. Thank you.
I have used Athlytic app for some time. It is good but the issue is that it does not work well with Strava. I use Strava as the central repository for all my activities. They only read the data Apple health. They blame On Strava not writing all the infos to health correctly . Therefore this app is not useful if you use Strava as you central repository. The developer said that I had to use another app to export from Strava that writes to health correctly. Meaning purchase another app. So why cannot they simple to this export inside the app when they know the issue??
@@ChaseTheSummit that is exactly what I am doing. Record the workout in TrainerRoad then sync to Strava. But apparently Strava does not sync to health correctly according to the Athlytic developer and therefore need to use the other app to sync to health correctly. Extra step and cost. That Athlytic could easily implement.
Great video. Since the first iPhone, Apple joked “there’s an app for that”. Listening to developers, we know Apple created a daunting OS, but they also supply a developer’s kit with lots of help to unlock it’s many unique features. Apple created the App Store to highlight 3rd party apps. Even in the last event said to watch out for a diver’s app coming soon. Apple’s strength has always been it’s hardware. They best develop technology while leaving the experts in each niche field to develop cutting edge software that will fully maximize their hardware. Knowing that, I will never understand their gaming problems.
Thank You for this Video. I just got my ULTRA and haven't opened the box yet. I decided to get the ULTRA basically to help me track my HABITS and record my thoughts easily which I don't get from my GARMIN watch. I've been looking for Aps that could bring the ULTRA closer to GARMIN and this video helps me a lot. Thank You and I am looking forward for more video re the ULTRA in your channel. All the best Bro.
I had just switched to the Garmin Fenix 7 from AW7. I have to say I LOVE the Fenix. I saw a comment on another video where a guy did the opposite and switched from Fenix 6x to AW Ultra and loved it. I asked him his reasons. He mentioned WorkOutDoors so I came to this channel hoping to find you using it and wanted your opinion. I still have my AW7 and trying to decide which one to stick with! I feel like the Garmin is so much better with training. However, I feel like I’m abandoning my wife and friends who use AW and you can see all their activities and stay accountable. I know nobody who uses a Garmin 😢. It’s such a tough choice.
Can you use Strava beacon for live tracking like Garmin connect live tracking? So, can you use Strava beacon by itself and then start a hike on WorkOutDoors and then also mark a waypoint using the side button on the ultra? I love how my Garmin Fenix sends a live track to my contacts whenever I start an activity. Activity, live track, waypoint. Thanks in advanced! Love your videos!
Just bought the Athlytic app a week ago for my Apple Watch, thanks for reviewing it, I like it a lot, makes the Apple Watch much better as a fitness device for sure - great vid as always!!
Thanks for these two apps and your detailed description! I love my new Ultra as I also enjoy its Waypoint drop feature that can get you back to your beginning if the area is new to you...
HellahGood did some pretty cool tests over on his TH-cam channel. He even kept the Apple Watch Series 7 on for Leadville and it got through 60 miles! That’s crazy! Based off of those tests alone, I think it’s possible that the Apple Watch Ultra could make it through a 100 mile race, with the right settings. Curious on your thoughts!
It would depend on your settings. If you’re willing to turn off the heart rate sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, always on display, etc… you might be able to pull it off. Personally though I’m not sure I’d want that anxiety 24 hours into a run 😂

I am sure you could create a Suri shortcut to make it work from the action button.
Based on your in-depth knowledge and outstanding video I have purchased both of these though I have had Work Outdoors for a couple of years now, and yes, the action button will allow you to start an activity right away. You have me as a constant follower. This is the kind of content that i can benefit from so much.
How does Athlytic’s data do in comparison to the Whoop data?
Thanks for this video. This is exactly what I have been looking for as I try to transition from Garmin to Apple.
What about a workout calendar!? Setting activities in advanced?
There are apps that can do that like iSmoothRun. The native activity app also supports workout creation now as well.
"Maybe they are terrible people. I hope not" - love it :) Both apps solve most of the problems of athletes (recovery mode, offline maps). And the pricing is ridiculously cheap.
will be nice to have a video talking about WorkOutdoors steup/tricks etc. BTW great content!
This is the review I had been waiting for all along! There are way too many desktop reviewers nowadays so it's nice to see someone going out and testing this on 3rd party apps.
Do you know if there’s an app to provide training effect (aerobic/anaerobic)?
Is there an app for Galaxy 5 pro like athletic?
I recently started using Athlytic and so far I actually like it better than my whoop
Thankyou for doing this video. Excellent.
Using the Athlytic App, loving it.
The action button can now be programmed to start a workout and other things. Swipe along the bottom of the map screen to change screens otherwise you will just move the map around.
I Will be using those apps once I get the watch. Thanks for the video
Actually I’ll start using it on my Apple Watch 3 but will be way better on ultra I’m sure
WHICH WATCH ARE YOU USING WHEN MAKING THE VIDEO?
Garmin Tactix 7
I saw you hiking in the woods for ski touring. I was just wondering if the ultra works for it? Does apple have any workout mode made for it? I love ski touring and I was wondering if the ultra is any good for my winter hobby.
Hello, Thank You For Sharing and Advice. I am impressed
This is brilliant, thank you so much!!! Exactly what I’ve been search for! (The work outside app)
How was the battery life when using athyletic? I really appreciate this video, I am gonna pick one up this weekend.
Didn’t change much. I don’t think it does any computing on board it just relays the information from the phone app.
This aged super well! 😄 #watchOS11
Amazing video! I have just switched to an Apple Watch Ultra from a Garmin Fenix 6x and I'm really pleased I have found these apps to make it a better fitness watch. Thank you.
Great content, love the info. Deciding if I can trading my Epix for an ultra.
Thank yoo Workoutdoors is great!
You could always record your runs in the native workout app and sync it with Strava.
Seriously.... Nobody can do anything without this watch... really....
Thanks. Downloaded Ahtlytic. Damn it makes iwatch ultra.. ultra
Wow. Better than whoop….well some of whoop graphs are better but the integration with apple health is amazing…but much cheaper. Thank you!!
Excellent observation of it's inherent drawbacks. Passing on Ultra for now.
Great video, thank you!
Does Workoutdoors give you grid references on the maps??
No grid reference unfortunatley.
@@ChaseTheSummit No worries, thanks for the reply! Do you know any apps that do?? Thanks 🙏
I can’t find workoutdoors now in apple apps? Probably it doesnt available in my country Malaysia yet. I can find athlytic 😢
Is there any app that allows to view the health data on Apple Watch? From what I know those data are just available on iPhone , not Apple Watch
Just started using the Athlytic app. Game changer for the Apple Watch 8!
Can Any of these 2 apps b used on the non ultra watch ?
Yes, in fact you don't even need to use an apple watch to use Athlytic. WorkOutdoors will work on Series 5 and up I believe.
