As a fellow Subaru owner, it amazes me that they sell cars to adventurers yet do this and also don't allow low voltage 12V items to run when the car is off. Don't get me started on them charging for the hitch either lol
1:41 If you think the carabiner is stuck...don't panic. Have the keys in your pocket and press and hold the rear hatch door opener button for a few seconds until it releases. I learned that the hard way. I almost messed up the latch using a hack saw to cut off the carabiner. Now, it works because of that simple procedure. If you get advice from forums or youtube videos, make sure you do as much research to get all the information.
I didn't know this problem existed! Wow. I installed quick release connectors on my Outback's harness when I replaced my battery this year. I guess I'll disconnect my battery if I ever leave the hatch open. Thanks.
Just so I understand, you close the latch and close the hatch? Do you then just reopen it manually and continue camping? I thought just closing the latch was enough.
Is there a way to visually know that you have disabled the tailgate battery draw? Will the interior lights go off as though the tailgate were closed confirming it is successfully overridden?
Hi, thanks for your videos, they're great. Can I ask what year model is your Outback? I'm getting a new 2024 model and I read elsewhere that this issue has been fixed in the later models and the power is only on for 20 minutes now (but that 20 mins starts again every time you open a door). Have you heard about this? Thanks!
mine is 2022. I also heard that too but I still hear from people that 24 still drains the battery.. so maybe your right. 20min starts again every time you open a door.
Dang, this just happened to me at the beach. Thank goodness I have AAA. How annoying. I've had the hatch open prior. This was the first time I drained my battery. I guess I'll test this strategy it home.
Help, I used a device and moved the leveler to the lock position. It will not close and so I cannot complete the steps. Now I cannot move the leveler back to the open position. I am stuck without being able to close my hatch. This is not good!
Hi, as I explained in the video, close the hatch manually and press the hatch button on your key fob or the button on the hatch to open. this will release the lock and open back up.
I believe Subaru already has the software update available and will provide the update for you under warranty. They applied the update on my 2018 outback.
What is in the update? The ability to keep the hatch open with the lights off? I just got a new Subaru a couple of months ago so I’m assuming the software in my car already has the update
Why are you pulling the hatch closed after tripping the lock? After tripping the lock, I just leave mine open until I’m done, and then I push hatch unlock on my fob. Then, I keep pushing the close button on the hatch for each “step” until it closes all the way. I am not manually forcing the struts closed. I use an allen wrench, but anything straight will do, as you point out.
From my experience, I have for let the locking motor run to think that the hatch is closed and locked. Otherwise, it still drains the battery.. how long do you have your hatch open usually?
@@ChasingAdventuresCO All day. I have drained the battery before I started tripping the lock, so my system definitely works for me. 2018 Touring. What do you mean “let the locking motor run”? When I trip mine into position , it makes a motorized noise like when I normally shut it.
I agree. (After the carabiner locking procedure) ...as soon as I see the courtesy lights on the side mirrors go out, I know that the system is off and I am OK leaving the hatch it open. I have a 24 Forester Wilderness and I do believe forcing the door closed or open is a bad idea. I'm in the garage working for hours with it open and it seems to be fine. I will know better when it is open the whole night, but I am confident this works without forcing the doors. IMO
The computer needs to think that BOTH the hatch is closed and in the locked position. If you don't close the hatch after putting the latch in the locked position, the computer doesn't think the back door ever closed and will continue to stay on. At least that is the way I understand it.
You don’t even need the key. Use your index finger, pull it closed, push it up, make sure the dash indicator is out and the lights on the button are out No tools needed Your closing comment is the crux of the matter, why the bleep are the Subarus sold with such tiny little batteries to start with and why, knowing they were using anemic tiny little batteries, did Subaru not program a low voltage disconnect into the system Tell pepper to chill, he was way too worked up there 😅
Lol!! I know, wasn't he?!? Unfortunately, these are just one of those things we have to deal with... and of course, you could use your fingers to do this but don't want grease hands handling camping equipment
Anyone who buys a Subaru needs to search "Issues with Subaru" as part of their research. This hatch nonsense is so shortsighted. The non-LED hatch light will also drain your battery within 12 hours. Also, Subaru loves to use very inferior batteries. Just had to replace mine after 3 year.
Several people have addressed this issue but yours is better than most. Good job 👍🏻
Thank you! I appreciate that 🙏

I 1000% agree!! And that is why I installed the hitch myself lol
Awesome hack brother! So very simple. Poor Pepper thinking to herself "Whatcha doing dad!?!?!" 🤣
Thanks, brotha! He was a bit confused 😕 lol

great info
Nice hack! Thank you brother!!
Thank you! Glad to help out the community
Literally just happened to me trying to get ready surfing. Great video - I saw the hatch catch but thought that was pricey for what it was...
glad to help out!!

That's another way to solve this problem!!
What a great dog! Perfect buddy … high 🐾. Thanks for that tip
Thank you!! high PAWS~!!
Just so I understand, you close the latch and close the hatch? Do you then just reopen it manually and continue camping? I thought just closing the latch was enough.
yes, you have to close it manually till you hear the locking motor, if not, it wont do anything.
@@ChasingAdventuresCO I tried it out this past weekend and it worked. I didn't know you could manually lift the hatch back up after "closing" it.
glad it worked out for you!

the light on the hatch will not turn on.
Good stuff as always! 👍🏾
Thanks! Hope it helps
This is good to know. Thanks man.
Anytime~!!
Thanks for the info. This has helped alot
No problem!glad I could help out the community

What the mounts for the gas cans?
It's called Orbis Overlanding Rack Wing. Link and discount code is in the description

thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it

Oh no... Subaru is know for using inferior batteries and with the stop/starter, it's going to get much worse as time goes by.
thanks for sharing. I didn't receive my outback yet, so can anyone tell me if leaving the doors open for some hours will be an issue as well?
Anytime, and leaving the door open for a few hours will not completely drain out the battery.
Thank you so much!
Anytime Brian!

this method should work on all hatch

After I lock and pull the tailgate down can I lift it open again (without draining the battery) as to install a tailgate tent?
Yes. That's the whole point of this video~

not yet.. been super busy juggling this, child, pregnant women, but it is one of my top priorities
A tool option that I will try: a stout bamboo chopstick.
That would work!!

this is so true!
I tried this over the weekend and it still drained my battery, I watched the video several times. Is there something I'm missing? 2023 OB wilderness
Did you close the hatch after locking it? You need to make sure you close it all the way down and hear the motor trying to close.
@@ChasingAdventuresCO yup! The motor made the noise 🙂
hmm it must be something else then.. did you do the trick before or after unloading your gear?
@@ChasingAdventuresCO I did it after unloading my gear, but unloading took maybe 20 min, we didn't have a lot
