    Thank you so much for a clear presentation of this method of fooling the tailgate. Your video covers the closing process best! And thanks for the tip, that the tailgate can be left partially open for ventilation without draining the battery!

    Lots of ideas out there. YOURS is the BEST. Thanks.
    Wouldn't it be great if Subaru had solved this for us without all the dead batteries?

    Thank you so very much for explaining in detail how to shut the open tailgate alarm off. I have the back hatch Open all the time when I’m picking up lumber. It is the most annoying noise but not anymore thanks to you. Have a great one my friend! 👍

    Thanks for the tip! Internet for the win, again! I’m out car camping for tonight’s a Perseid meteor shower and I’ve got my hatch open on my forester and my battery is already low, so the hack is much appreciated.

    Saw on someone’s video. Pull the hatch down a little before using fob to open it. (When it’s already open)Because it’s already as high as it should go , and hard on it to try to go higher.

    Sat on the trunk bed to long the other day with the hatch open on the outback. Had to jumpstart. It's time to practice your method. Thanks.

    I just reach in and grab the rear passenger seat belt D ring and use that. It's always there and automatically retracts when released. 2020 Outback

    My hatch opens while the vehicle is in the garage if someone accidentally hits the open button on the fob. We have a detached garage and may not use the car for a few days in the winter when it's cold old out. So when we do need the car the battery is dead and we have to get it jump-started. This happens frequently because we're retired.

    I was so excited after watching this video but this no longer works on the 2022 Outbacks. The approach lights stay on for 10 minutes although set for 30 seconds but thats not the problem. The 2 buttons on the hatch (close door icon and close & lock icon buttons) stay lit , they never shut off which means theres also current draw from sensors. I even tried using the carabiner while the hatch auto shut to fool the car into thinking it closed on its own but NOPE. Even worse, if you drive with the hatch open (my kayak sticks out the back so the hatch is bungeed down) the stupid HATCH OPEN alarm beeps for a minute every time you move after coming to a stop. Guess I gotta start pulling fuses.
    Anyway, excellent tutorial if you have an older Outback.

      Darn, I bought a 2022 wilderness Forester to car camp and leave hatch open... Did you ever find a solution or work around?

    • @HomesteadOnThePreserve
      @HomesteadOnThePreserve 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Kindred-Lane YES I DID!
      Two options, one easy one a pain.
      1- Use a screwdriver to catch into the latch WITHIN THE LAST INCH OF HATCH CLOSURE. The sensor knows where the hatch is SUPPOSED to close, within an inch. Its kinda hard to do because you're on the ground looking up trying to line up the driver shaft into the latch WHILE THE HATCH IS AUTO CLOSING.
      2- Buy a "HATCH CATCH" from a dude on "Etsy"
      My wife bought one for me and it's AWESOME!
      Maybe ill do a video on it.
      Let me know if you need more details but im sure you'll find it right away. Its a red 3D printed piece of plastic thats shaped like a padlock.

      @@HomesteadOnThePreserve thank you! I'll check out the hatch catch.

      @Kindred-Lane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HomesteadOnThePreserve It finally came in and it seems to work just fine! Thanks for the rec! I haven't tried it fully to see if the battery will drain or not but it seems it won't if I leave it open. I luckily have a battery jump start just in case. Much appreciated!

      @@Kindred-Lane So happy that you are happy! If your Forester hatch has the two buttons CLOSE and CLOSE / LOCK that both illuminate red like my 22 Outback Wilderness then youll know right away that it works because they will not glow once the catch ....umm.... catches.

    This is a big NOPE on 2022 Wilderness Outback. All those buttons won’t work to release the latch when a caribener is locked in there. Took me 30 mins. I had to almost fully close the tailgate, then by some miracle hitting the TG open button released it. It’s maddening!

  • @margebeck3201

    So, how do you get the caribiner or light out of the lock?

      With a later model I had to take it out and manually shut the hatch before it opened again.
