As yourself I too owned a 2022 Outback. Although mine was the touring model, which I was happy with. But I was hit and it was totaled, all that mattered was no one was hurt, especially since I had my 3 yr old grandson with me. So our next car we chose something a little bigger, a Honda pilot. I still watched your videos thou, just not all of them like before. Congrats on addition to your family!!!!
I enjoy the Pilot a lot, the only downside for me on the Outback was the space. But in the Outback defense I drove a van for 40 yrs prior to owning Outback. So hence after being totaled we chose something bigger. The Pilot was a good choice for us.
I just bought a 2025 Outback WE in black. Traded in my 22 GTI for it. It absolutely blows the GTI out of the water. I love the car so far, I have 500 miles on it. Your content has been a huge inspiration for me! Edit: Sooo Hyundai Santa Fe..?

Good commentary. lookup youtube there is a seatbelt hack clicking 20 times that disables the chime for front seats. Also lots of people commenting about turbo mated with TR690 transmission is jerky. my Onyx with 2.5 engine is smoother. there is no perfect car, love the upgrades you have done , enjoy whatever you get

I love my Subi, but the only thing that irks me is when the Android Auto drops for no reason or drops on certain parts of the freeway. And I hate it how slow the interface screen can be at times. I have a 2024 Outback Touring XT. It’s my second one and I love it for the same reasons you do. The eyesight system is improved but it’s still glitchy as is the center entertainment system, despite the improvements Subaru says it made. I average 25mph in mixed driving. I enjoy all your videos - thank you.
Hello, I have a Subaru Outback 3.6 model 2018. I live in Colombia and I am a lover of nature and traveling around my country. I have had two problems with my Subaru: 1. Damage to the electro-assisted steering box due to water entering the electric motor, a river was passing through and the water entered and the damage occurred after 2000 km. I had to change the power steering module. 2. Engine heating when I drive it at medium or high-demand trails, the engine temperature begins to rise and performance decreases. My Subaru is spectacular, I changed the suspension and tire and I follow your advice to adapt it to my trips. Greetings from Colombia!!
Talking about subaru being budget friendly, i live in europe, finland and even the normal subaru outback is 50-55k€, wilderness edition would be like 60-65k€ (70,3k$). You can get like normal 2017 2,5L outback with 45k miles with 22,5k€ (24,3k$). Even like little kia cars when theyr new here they cost like 33k$. On top of that gallon of gas is 7,93$ and car taxes and insurances are crazy 117$ per month. Filling up your tank is around 125$ Then there is road taxes etc. Bigges engines we dont even get here, just the 2,5liter motors
You can disable to chime by pressing the selt belt latch like 20 times right after starting the car and then turn it off. A bunch of TH-cam videos about how to do that.
I was getting in the low 20's for MPG in my 23 OBW because of my driving style (quick acceleration off line, 85mph on hwy and a lot of passing lane hogs). The past 3 weeks I've been more mindful of that and tried keeping it under 2k rpms around town, with smoother throttle input (letting the torque do the work). On the highway I'm staying under 75mph, using the ACC more with it set to follow closely and generally sticking between 65-70 with minimal passing. First week I got up to 26mpg, second week it was 30mpg with a lot of highway driving, and this past week it was at 28.8mpg and I'm getting 400mi out of a tank. Granted, this is with an empty car and no roof gear but I could see you getting into the mid to high 20's with some adjustments.
The best I got was around 22 mpg and I was extremely careful with the throttle, I mean really careful... but as soon as I start to drive normally, it tanks down.. off roading doesn't help either. Lol
@@mikkomallari3611 It says it'll take 89 no problem. Which is normally unusual for a forced-induction engine, and recommends 93 if you're towing. I just run 93 all the time because it's the same engine as the WRX and that requires it.
I still love my Forester Wilderness even with the small hiccups it has. One note on mpg: I have been getting HIGHER than advertised mpg. I think it all depends on what environment you live in and what road obstacles you might encounter (hills, slower road sections, etc), as well as how you drive it.
I still love my OBW too!! LOL just out grown it. and I am glad to hear that you are getting higher MPG!! and yes the environment does come into affect. because when I was living in So Cal, I got even worse MPG! might also has to do with the fuel and high ambient temperature.

You're spot on with the likes and dislikes. I've only had my 25 OBW for a month, and I do love it. And I do find myself turning back to look at it. But, I gotta say after joining the FB groups I have some serious questions on whether I purchased the right vehicle. I bought the car with the assumption that Subaru was quality made and will last a long time. However, I'm beginning to feel SOA has cut corners would rather have customers continue to trade-up rather than keep for long-term. Anyways, I still love the vehicle and want to mod it up like yours and take it on adventures with my family. Congrats on your new addition! I'll definitely continue to follow you and see what's next =)

Friend has the Outback. Riding around in it. The constant noises and flashing, The seatbelts, the lane-assist, correction messing with the steering. These things need to be set to drivers preferences. The crt transmission does not give my a lot of confidence. Sometimes its too much and interferes with driving, doing experience and can startle you.

Wife's 2020 Outback is getting great mpg. Subaru completed a software update 6 months ago. Our vehicle is the XT Touring loaded. My only complaint with Subaru is they don't offer a pickup. I recall my friend swinging by in his 1978 BRAT to pick me up for High School. Subaru is missing out offering a Van and pickup truck Die-hard drivers. NHTSA has rated Subaru #1 overall in vehicle safety. Moreover, Subaru's maintenace Department is solid. Our local dearship washes and vacuums of Outback everytime it's for service or repairs.

I have little over 50k miles on my OBW, all has been great. Not really sure if I had to get a new car right now what I would get to replace what I have. Well said. If it wasn't for our growing family, I would have kept the Subaru longer but we are glad we got out new SUV. It fits our family's life style well. Maybe if they come with new gen Ascent wilderness, I will visit this page again.

I have the 2024, and still noticed the issue with eyesight, one time it changed lane on it's own in merging lanes, good thing there was no car next to me. But that was scary

I have a '24 Outback Wilderness. I agree with everything you said except the MPG. I believe you when you say you get 19, but it makes no sense from my experience. And as you said, you are not alone. A lot of people claim the same thing. But over the 27,000KM I've owned our car, I have never reset trip B meter. It currently says 8.5L/100KM. Based on the US gallon (3.77L) that works out to 27.6 MPG lifetime in American gallons. It's sitting on 235/65R17 BFG Trail-Terrain tires, which are 2% taller than OE tires, so it may be 2% better than that 27.6. But for the sake of the computer not being 100 percent accurate, we'll stick with the 27.6. I will say, other than the 1 size larger tires and RalliTEK coils, the car is stock, and not nearly as laden with accessories as yours. Also, get an Anderson Design 85D transmission insert. All your dislikes of the CVT will disappear.
great to heat that you are getting great MPG!! however, other then the mods and all the weight my cars has to endure, I don't know where you are from but geological location matters a lot too like if you live in a plain field, car doesn't have to work as hard as some places with lots of inclines. but generally, the car is great.
@ChasingAdventuresCO I never considered that lol. May also be the case with all the other people I've seen saying they get poorer mileage. I guess few mention where they actually live. I live in Nova Scotia, so higher altitudes is not a factor for me. It's definitely not like the prairies, but also nothing like the mountains out west. I hope you enjoy the new Pilot. Hopefully you do a comparison video to the Outback Wilderness in regards to overall driving experience and moderate off-road ability.
Yeah I get you. When you get older and start a family, your priorities change. I used to ride motorcycles when I was younger and now I am not hating minivans. Haha! Those things are hecka nice these days with reclining second row seats. Kid's are grown now, but I got spoiled with comfort, space and storage. I bought a new 2001 Yukon XL when I started my family for safety, capability and space and future needs. I still have that vehicle today as it still fits all my check boxes and it still runs and rides like day one. I do turn around and look at it. Haha! Well wife is considering getting another vehicle. She considered the Crosstrek because she wanted something easy to get around town and park. But the trunk space is a joke. I told her the Outback would be more practical because we do like to go on trips. She really wants an EV or PHEV. But a must have is ventilated seats because it makes long trips comfortable for her. Too bad the Outback Wilderness doesn't come with ventilated seats. Oh. I still have my motorcycles and my Corvette. Kid wouldn't let sell them. They're his now I guess?😄
Thanks~! we have to make sacrifices for our children but its definitely worth it! but you are lucky because you still have your bike!! we have the new prius prime (phev) and wife loves that car. her drive to work and back is around 32 miles and we only fill up once since she got it in April this year. didn't want to go full EV and loose the convenience of gas so PHEV was a great choice for us.

But nothing fits that bill or $$$. We have an Hyundai Ioniq hybrid and get between 47-50 mpg which is still amazing. Be interesting to see what your next vehicle will be and what you do to it. I don't drive my vette or ride my bikes anymore. Kid's toys now.

I had a 2019 Ascent (same engine/drivetrain except for final drive ratio, lower for wilderness for torquey climbs) and we saw the same gas milage lag as you. I think a good tank was 19mpg doing 50/50 city/hwy. Talking with the technicians and sales reps when I would take it for service and it was the same story. The 2.4L turbo is tuned so low it almost never doesn't engage and because of that the MPG tanks hard. I would normally get 15-17mpg per tank when gas was in the $4+/gallon range and that hurt. A note on why the Ascent doesn't have a Wilderness trim primarily because it has nothing to upsize. The engine/drivetrain is already topped out, clearance was already 9", only things it would get is StarTex seating and some gold accents. My wife loved the ascent but the gas was blowing the budget way out of control.
@@ChasingAdventuresCO We replaced it with a Chevy Bolt EUV and love the lack of gas and home charging. In 27 months we've put over 35k miles and it costs about $3/charge (200ish miles used).

Honda Pilot, trailsport version 🙂 The more I learn about the CVT, the more comfortable I feel about it. From the locking torque converter on gentle acceleration or slowing down to the contrasting smooth and rapid acceleration when pushing it at 70 to 80% acceleration (like hitting the resume button from 10mph headed back to cruising at 75mph). Still don't care for the fake shifting on hard acceleration. I think it's just dumb. Really don't care for the overbearing eyesight nanny and unpredictable jerking that the lane assist occasionally does (too often). So I use that feature very sparingly. Our 2020 Santa Fe has many of these features as well but they're much easier to live with. Plus the Santa Fe has pinch and zoom on the Apple Car Play. I REALLY miss having that on my '24 OBW. There's much about the newer version of Apple Car Play that makes life more uncomfortable and definitely less safe. Looking forward to your next video!

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but you can disable the seat belt chime. If you search for subaru disable seat belt chime it should show up. I had a 2021 touring xt and turning off the RAB was a bit annoying. Glad I got my 24 Wilderness without it. Mine does get 22mpg often when calculating it manually and 23-24 on the screen but a lot of city driving will bring that down some. My 24 wilderness has a tsb for the trans tuning and just had a new tcm ordered at the dealer. This was not a huge deal to mean but it would surge to a stop sometimes with the A/C on.
My biggest gripe about my '24 OBW is the damn CVT and turbo lag. It's so restrictive!!!! I slam the gas, then wait 4 seconds before it takes off. Coming from sports cars with almost zero lag, it's very frustrating. Especially when driving on the freeway and needing to make quick reactions to avoid accidents, I don't feel safe. Space is good, but it does leave a lot to be desired. I'm preparing to change cars hopefully by the end of the year.

The factory diverted valve is what causes the bounciness of the acceleration and breaking. I made a post on the Outback forum about this fix. But I would agree the CVT doesn’t allow the immediate acceleration. I’m assuming you got a Honda Pilot. I’ve only heard great reviews with them

One things that urks me about my Outback and other Subaru models are how fragile the windshields are. It’s been 2 years and I’ve gone through 3 windshields. Not only do they crack easily, but they expand very easily as well to the point where the cracks expand past 6 inches and they need to be replaced. Very frustrating as they’ve only happened when doing daily driving and not during off roading.
oh yes, I personally didn't have this issue but I heard a lot of people having crack windshield.. and I've never heard this issue from any other car manufactures so yeah, this is alarming.

I know I had the same issues with the rubber band, jittering from the cvt and thought my OBW had issues. The stuttery stopping, jitter/rubber banding is the torque converter locking and unlocking at low speeds. At normal speeds it generally stays locked and you never feel it. One kind fella from another video explained this to us from the information he got directly from Subaru, so it's normal. Thank goodness. 😅
Wow, beautiful build on that subie! Getting my Jaguar F-Pace SVR, (performance suv) in a few months. Hoping it will be able to off-road and have similar capabilities to this. Obviously it won’t have off-road tires, but with the ground clearance and suspension, I’m feeling optimistic. Keep up the great content!

I feel the same way about the electronic safety. It is way over the top. If I am looking into a turn, the dash lights up and beeps at me, "keep your eyes on the road." It is so annoying, I have now manually disabled it. I also agree that the controls all being on the touch screen is really dangerous....and very annoying. Subaru has pushed me away from ever buying a new vehicle from them. It really is too bad, I was such a big fan.
I am new to the Wilderness. One month and one cross country trip. 26.3 mpg one the road. Not a lot of stop and go in Montana. You are 100% on the money with the drawbacks. Especially the Infotainment. Slow and wonky. The lane centering is a little too creative for me. Too much ping pong, and not predictive on curves. It is jerky and it overcompensated. I disconnected the overly protective safety belt beeps with the 20 connects in 1 minute. Given all that...I love it.
that is great to hear the you were able to get 26 MPG!!! gives hope for other OBW owners. but like you mentioned, geological location really matters. we have lot of hills here so MPG is worse. plus my mods don't help with aero either. LOL and other then those minor complaints, overall its a great fun vehicle.
Where’s your copilot (noticed her in the background towards the end, never mind)? How is she getting on with the little one? I’ll be staying on to see how the new ride treats you. As to the Subi: First thing I did was disable the seatbelt chime. There are instructions online for that. My 24 OBW lane keeping is pathetic on backroads when compared to our 2020 RAV, fine on interstates pathetic on backroads. I get 24ish in mixed use but I have a light foot, most of my trips though are under 20 miles on backroads so I figure that is fair based on the rating. I agree that cars should have buttons no argument. If you disagree with that you’re just wrong. My #1 regret is it’s an AWD not a 4WD especially with the NPS starting to crack down (justifiably) on the trail damage that AWDs are causing. I’m thinking about jumping to the Land Cruiser or new gen 4runner
Pepper is around and free to roam as he wishes but his in the tent most of the time. LoL. House dog... at first he was confused but now he lets her pet him. I am just finding out about seat belt disable trick.. it's too bad we have to disable it cause it's just too annoying. Land Cruiser would be a great choice. I just opt to the Honda because it was much cheaper, NA V6 and no mark up. And toyota been slipping on quality control with their new suvs and truck. As much as I hate to say this but that's what happens when it's made in US...
@ChasingAdventuresCO Thankfully it wasn't. The local dealer was using it as a shuttle from the parking lot to their test drive area, it was pretty cool.
Got my outback last year, it was either Crv or the Outback and i went with the Subaru simply because of safety. Safety not just for my driving but also if i get hit, i think my probability to survive in a Subaru is higher 😂
they are two very different vehicle! Tacoma was my first Truck and altho I love the capability and able to haul stuff around with ease but I like the outback for the security that I could leave my cargo in the back without worrying about being stolen.
Seat belt chime turn acc on doors closed click your seat belt in and out 35 times fast like with in 30 seconds then turn key off and then when you start it the chime will go off
i watch to see all the goodies he gets to test out on a camping trip. i had a highlander before my subbie.. it was a great vehicle. just a lot of car for my driving needs. went to subaru for safety features. waiting for the right EV for me. i hate the infotainment center.
Well, with all those mods.. come sacrifices to mpg. I get 27 city mpg with a 2017 Forester XT. As far as storage goes. I have 2 kids and never found an issue with the ex's 2014 Outback on trips.. sad to see you go but hey. Better luck next time. As someone who moved from a 2005 Legacy GT to a 17 Forester XT, with 2 kids. I'm happy with what subaru offers. I just find ways of making it all work.
yes, I am very aware of loss in the MPG with my mods but I was no where near the suggested MPG rating when the car was stock so thats why it was on that list. I am sure I could be fine with the outback too if it was just 4 of us but our father in law is moving in with us so 3 adults and 2 car seat in the OBW wont work out too well.
Oh man, I have a 24 OBW, and the nannies on it can be pretty annoying. The phantom obstacles that kick in the brakes is especially annoying. Anyway, the Ascent doesn't really do it for me either. Something like a Land Cruiser or the Lexus version would be my choice for 3 row dad mobile.
Be careful taking your Outback or other AWD vehicles into National parks. My 2023 Tacoma TRD OR averages 18.5mpg in the city mostly and 26.1mpg on highway drives. My 2005 Outback XT Limited manual has digital A/C and the blend door is dead and killed the display and radio. The driver’s side blows hot air and I can’t turn the vent to recirculate to not have air flow.
I have the 2024 outback wilderness. My gas mileage is much better then yours, my mileage went down a little bit after I added the rooftop box but I'm still getting 24.9. I generally like the car but yes there are a few annoying things. I agree the so called safety features are over the top. They try to make it safer but then you have to take your eyes off the road to change things on the info screen. The beeping features are crazy, just 1 example if you stop the car, put it in park and open the door to do something like reach the bank teller screen, get something out of the back seat or whatever it keeps beeping. What is it trying to tell me that I left the key in the ignition? It has no key to leave. Yes the front seat does feel cramped. It's very difficult to install the usb cord into the dash. I would also like to add that a lot of people use these cars for car camping like myself and something that doesn't make sense is that it doesn't come with a remote starter. Subaru wants you to do a monthly subscription and use an app on your phone. Well first of all I don't want another monthly bill and secondly I go camping in areas most of the time that doesn't have good cell reception or any at all. I tried to get a remote starter installed and the company told me they didn't have one to work with the subaru right now, didn't know how long it would take if ever. This is a major drawback I think because without putting the car in ac mode you can't roll up or down the windows as needed for air while laying in the back. Also you can't start the car to turn on the heater for a few minutes before you get out of your sleeping bag. I use 2 sticks for this application to press the gas pedal and one for the start button, and then I had to tape a stylus to one of the sticks to use on the info screen to adjust the temperature or fan. wow that is a great gas mileage you are getting. I was getting no where near that when my car was stock... and yes.. the door open chiming is really weird.. it shouldnt be chimming if you have the car in park. so what I do is after I open the door, I press the rubber switch right near the door hinge and it will think the door is closed.. its very annoying. and I 1000% agree with you on the remote starter. I do have to peek half way out of my sleeping bag to turn the car on LOL

I have a 24 outback wilderness, 6000 miles. does anybody have a rear strut bounce? I push down on the rear bumper hard 3 or 4 times, let go and the car bobs up and down 3 or 4 times. Every other car bobs 1 1/2 times. I went to dealership they replaced them and the new ones are even worse. you can feel it bouncing when hitting dips in the road, cant be good for the tires. Anyone?
I had the opposite experience where the suspension was so hard, going over a speed bump at 13 miles, made a huge Thud sound. Like the spare tire was loose. They also said it was NORMALL. But over time, suspension got softer and it's fine now.
Same comments with those guys had a OBW, its sad that yours will be gone soon, but I’m still happy that your family is growing, we’ll I’m still gonna watch your content because I’m one of your fans here in Canada. Enjoy the new ride soon!

As yourself I too owned a 2022 Outback. Although mine was the touring model, which I was happy with. But I was hit and it was totaled, all that mattered was no one was hurt, especially since I had my 3 yr old grandson with me. So our next car we chose something a little bigger, a Honda pilot. I still watched your videos thou, just not all of them like before. Congrats on addition to your family!!!!

I enjoy the Pilot a lot, the only downside for me on the Outback was the space. But in the Outback defense I drove a van for 40 yrs prior to owning Outback. So hence after being totaled we chose something bigger. The Pilot was a good choice for us.

Good commentary. lookup youtube there is a seatbelt hack clicking 20 times that disables the chime for front seats. Also lots of people commenting about turbo mated with TR690 transmission is jerky. my Onyx with 2.5 engine is smoother. there is no perfect car, love the upgrades you have done , enjoy whatever you get

I have a 2024 Outback Touring XT. It’s my second one and I love it for the same reasons you do. The eyesight system is improved but it’s still glitchy as is the center entertainment system, despite the improvements Subaru says it made. I average 25mph in mixed driving. I enjoy all your videos - thank you.

Hello, I have a Subaru Outback 3.6 model 2018. I live in Colombia and I am a lover of nature and traveling around my country. I have had two problems with my Subaru: 1. Damage to the electro-assisted steering box due to water entering the electric motor, a river was passing through and the water entered and the damage occurred after 2000 km. I had to change the power steering module. 2. Engine heating when I drive it at medium or high-demand trails, the engine temperature begins to rise and performance decreases. My Subaru is spectacular, I changed the suspension and tire and I follow your advice to adapt it to my trips. Greetings from Colombia!!

A pakumule cargo carrier lets you carry bikes & cargo at the same time, really lets you bring those extra things you dont need but are nice to have
I do have a cargo carrier that I use from time to time if I need more cargo space but the Pakumule cargo carrier is so expensive. LOL
Talking about subaru being budget friendly, i live in europe, finland and even the normal subaru outback is 50-55k€, wilderness edition would be like 60-65k€ (70,3k$).
You can get like normal 2017 2,5L outback with 45k miles with 22,5k€ (24,3k$).
Even like little kia cars when theyr new here they cost like 33k$.
On top of that gallon of gas is 7,93$ and car taxes and insurances are crazy 117$ per month. Filling up your tank is around 125$
Then there is road taxes etc.
Bigges engines we dont even get here, just the 2,5liter motors

You can disable to chime by pressing the selt belt latch like 20 times right after starting the car and then turn it off. A bunch of TH-cam videos about how to do that.

I was getting in the low 20's for MPG in my 23 OBW because of my driving style (quick acceleration off line, 85mph on hwy and a lot of passing lane hogs). The past 3 weeks I've been more mindful of that and tried keeping it under 2k rpms around town, with smoother throttle input (letting the torque do the work). On the highway I'm staying under 75mph, using the ACC more with it set to follow closely and generally sticking between 65-70 with minimal passing. First week I got up to 26mpg, second week it was 30mpg with a lot of highway driving, and this past week it was at 28.8mpg and I'm getting 400mi out of a tank. Granted, this is with an empty car and no roof gear but I could see you getting into the mid to high 20's with some adjustments.
The best I got was around 22 mpg and I was extremely careful with the throttle, I mean really careful... but as soon as I start to drive normally, it tanks down.. off roading doesn't help either. Lol

@@mikkomallari3611 It says it'll take 89 no problem. Which is normally unusual for a forced-induction engine, and recommends 93 if you're towing. I just run 93 all the time because it's the same engine as the WRX and that requires it.
I still love my Forester Wilderness even with the small hiccups it has.
One note on mpg: I have been getting HIGHER than advertised mpg. I think it all depends on what environment you live in and what road obstacles you might encounter (hills, slower road sections, etc), as well as how you drive it.
I still love my OBW too!! LOL just out grown it. and I am glad to hear that you are getting higher MPG!! and yes the environment does come into affect. because when I was living in So Cal, I got even worse MPG! might also has to do with the fuel and high ambient temperature.

You're spot on with the likes and dislikes. I've only had my 25 OBW for a month, and I do love it. And I do find myself turning back to look at it. But, I gotta say after joining the FB groups I have some serious questions on whether I purchased the right vehicle. I bought the car with the assumption that Subaru was quality made and will last a long time. However, I'm beginning to feel SOA has cut corners would rather have customers continue to trade-up rather than keep for long-term. Anyways, I still love the vehicle and want to mod it up like yours and take it on adventures with my family. Congrats on your new addition! Friend has the Outback. Riding around in it. The constant noises and flashing, The seatbelts, the lane-assist, correction messing with the steering. These things need to be set to drivers preferences. The crt transmission does not give my a lot of confidence.
Sometimes its too much and interferes with driving, doing experience and can startle you.

Wife's 2020 Outback is getting great mpg. Subaru completed a software update 6 months ago. Our vehicle is the XT Touring loaded. My only complaint with Subaru is they don't offer a pickup. I recall my friend swinging by in his 1978 BRAT to pick me up for High School. Subaru is missing out offering a Van and pickup truck Die-hard drivers. NHTSA has rated Subaru #1 overall in vehicle safety. Moreover, Subaru's maintenace Department is solid. Our local dearship washes and vacuums of Outback everytime it's for service or repairs.

I have little over 50k miles on my OBW, all has been great. Not really sure if I had to get a new car right now what I would get to replace what I have. I have the 2024, and still noticed the issue with eyesight, one time it changed lane on it's own in merging lanes, good thing there was no car next to me. But that was scary

I have a '24 Outback Wilderness.
I agree with everything you said except the MPG.
I believe you when you say you get 19, but it makes no sense from my experience. And as you said, you are not alone. A lot of people claim the same thing.
But over the 27,000KM I've owned our car, I have never reset trip B meter.
It currently says 8.5L/100KM. Based on the US gallon (3.77L) that works out to 27.6 MPG lifetime in American gallons.
It's sitting on 235/65R17 BFG Trail-Terrain tires, which are 2% taller than OE tires, so it may be 2% better than that 27.6.
But for the sake of the computer not being 100 percent accurate, we'll stick with the 27.6.
I will say, other than the 1 size larger tires and RalliTEK coils, the car is stock, and not nearly as laden with accessories as yours.
Also, get an Anderson Design 85D transmission insert. All your dislikes of the CVT will disappear.
great to heat that you are getting great MPG!! however, other then the mods and all the weight my cars has to endure, I don't know where you are from but geological location matters a lot too like if you live in a plain field, car doesn't have to work as hard as some places with lots of inclines. but generally, the car is great.

I live in Nova Scotia, so higher altitudes is not a factor for me. It's definitely not like the prairies, but also nothing like the mountains out west.

Kid's are grown now, but I got spoiled with comfort, space and storage.
I bought a new 2001 Yukon XL when I started my family for safety, capability and space and future needs. I still have that vehicle today as it still fits all my check boxes and it still runs and rides like day one. I do turn around and look at it. Haha!
Well wife is considering getting another vehicle. She considered the Crosstrek because she wanted something easy to get around town and park. But the trunk space is a joke. I told her the Outback would be more practical because we do like to go on trips. She really wants an EV or PHEV. But a must have is ventilated seats because it makes long trips comfortable for her.
Too bad the Outback Wilderness doesn't come with ventilated seats.
Oh. I still have my motorcycles and my Corvette. Kid wouldn't let sell them. They're his now I guess?😄

we have the new prius prime (phev) and wife loves that car. her drive to work and back is around 32 miles and we only fill up once since she got it in April this year. didn't want to go full EV and loose the convenience of gas so PHEV was a great choice for us.
@@ChasingAdventuresCO yeah we would prefer a PHEV. Best of both worlds. But need something a little larger, at least 50 miles all electric range and capable in all weather conditions. But nothing fits that bill or $$$.
We have an Hyundai Ioniq hybrid and get between 47-50 mpg which is still amazing.

I had a 2019 Ascent (same engine/drivetrain except for final drive ratio, lower for wilderness for torquey climbs) and we saw the same gas milage lag as you. I think a good tank was 19mpg doing 50/50 city/hwy. Talking with the technicians and sales reps when I would take it for service and it was the same story. The 2.4L turbo is tuned so low it almost never doesn't engage and because of that the MPG tanks hard. I would normally get 15-17mpg per tank when gas was in the $4+/gallon range and that hurt.
A note on why the Ascent doesn't have a Wilderness trim primarily because it has nothing to upsize. The engine/drivetrain is already topped out, clearance was already 9", only things it would get is StarTex seating and some gold accents. My wife loved the ascent but the gas was blowing the budget way out of control.

@@ChasingAdventuresCO We replaced it with a Chevy Bolt EUV and love the lack of gas and home charging. In 27 months we've put over 35k miles and it costs about $3/charge (200ish miles used).

Honda Pilot, trailsport version 🙂 The more I learn about the CVT, the more comfortable I feel about it. From the locking torque converter on gentle acceleration or slowing down to the contrasting smooth and rapid acceleration when pushing it at 70 to 80% acceleration (like hitting the resume button from 10mph headed back to cruising at 75mph). Still don't care for the fake shifting on hard acceleration. I think it's just dumb. Really don't care for the overbearing eyesight nanny and unpredictable jerking that the lane assist occasionally does (too often). So I use that feature very sparingly. Our 2020 Santa Fe has many of these features as well but they're much easier to live with. Plus the Santa Fe has pinch and zoom on the Apple Car Play. I REALLY miss having that on my '24 OBW. There's much about the newer version of Apple Car Play that makes life more uncomfortable and definitely less safe. Looking forward to your next video!

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but you can disable the seat belt chime. If you search for subaru disable seat belt chime it should show up. I had a 2021 touring xt and turning off the RAB was a bit annoying. Glad I got my 24 Wilderness without it. Mine does get 22mpg often when calculating it manually and 23-24 on the screen but a lot of city driving will bring that down some. My 24 wilderness has a tsb for the trans tuning and just had a new tcm ordered at the dealer. This was not a huge deal to mean but it would surge to a stop sometimes with the A/C on.
yup, I am just finding this out now. LOL
My biggest gripe about my '24 OBW is the damn CVT and turbo lag. It's so restrictive!!!! I slam the gas, then wait 4 seconds before it takes off. Coming from sports cars with almost zero lag, it's very frustrating. Especially when driving on the freeway and needing to make quick reactions to avoid accidents, I don't feel safe.
Space is good, but it does leave a lot to be desired.
I'm preparing to change cars hopefully by the end of the year.
Yup, i hear you!! there is definitely a lag and it's the CVT transmission. It takes forever to kick down. You have to anticipate and plan ahead...

The factory diverted valve is what causes the bounciness of the acceleration and breaking. I made a post on the Outback forum about this fix. But I would agree the CVT doesn’t allow the immediate acceleration.

One things that urks me about my Outback and other Subaru models are how fragile the windshields are. It’s been 2 years and I’ve gone through 3 windshields. Not only do they crack easily, but they expand very easily as well to the point where the cracks expand past 6 inches and they need to be replaced. Very frustrating as they’ve only happened when doing daily driving and not during off roading.
oh yes, I personally didn't have this issue but I heard a lot of people having crack windshield.. and I've never heard this issue from any other car manufactures so yeah, this is alarming.

I know I had the same issues with the rubber band, jittering from the cvt and thought my OBW had issues. The stuttery stopping, jitter/rubber banding is the torque converter locking and unlocking at low speeds. At normal speeds it generally stays locked and you never feel it. One kind fella from another video explained this to us from the information he got directly from Subaru, so it's normal. Thank goodness. 😅

Wow, beautiful build on that subie! Getting my Jaguar F-Pace SVR, (performance suv) in a few months. Hoping it will be able to off-road and have similar capabilities to this. Obviously it won’t have off-road tires, but with the ground clearance and suspension, I’m feeling optimistic. Keep up the great content!

Noooooooooo. Your subaru was one of the main reasons why I bought mine. I went from a Stage 2 Subie WRX STI to my Outback Wilderness because I too became a father. Cape Flattery is a awesome place to visit, it was one of the first place I visited years ago with the Tacoma. and that short hike to the edge of most north west point of the state was just magical.

I have a 24 Ascent and 24 Outback Wilderness. I do like Honda but my wife wanted an Ascent. She feels safe in it and liked the turbo. 🤷🏽♂️

Yeah have to agree the MPG is really low. Just to think that a compact/midsize crossover has MPG comparable to an F150...

Pulmone makes some of the best kimchee and I didn't know Walrmart sell them?!? LOL. good stuff.
I feel the same way about the electronic safety. It is way over the top. If I am looking into a turn, the dash lights up and beeps at me, "keep your eyes on the road." It is so annoying, I have now manually disabled it.
I also agree that the controls all being on the touch screen is really dangerous....and very annoying.
Subaru has pushed me away from ever buying a new vehicle from them. It really is too bad, I was such a big fan.
YES... its over the top on safety measures but yet, dangerous to operate the infotainment system while driving.
I am new to the Wilderness. One month and one cross country trip. 26.3 mpg one the road. Not a lot of stop and go in Montana. You are 100% on the money with the drawbacks. Especially the Infotainment. Slow and wonky. The lane centering is a little too creative for me. Too much ping pong, and not predictive on curves. It is jerky and it overcompensated. I disconnected the overly protective safety belt beeps with the 20 connects in 1 minute. Given all that...I love it.
that is great to hear the you were able to get 26 MPG!!! gives hope for other OBW owners. but like you mentioned, geological location really matters. we have lot of hills here so MPG is worse. plus my mods don't help with aero either. LOL and other then those minor complaints, overall its a great fun vehicle.
Where’s your copilot (noticed her in the background towards the end, never mind)? How is she getting on with the little one? I’ll be staying on to see how the new ride treats you. As to the Subi: First thing I did was disable the seatbelt chime. There are instructions online for that. My 24 OBW lane keeping is pathetic on backroads when compared to our 2020 RAV, fine on interstates pathetic on backroads. I get 24ish in mixed use but I have a light foot, most of my trips though are under 20 miles on backroads so I figure that is fair based on the rating. I agree that cars should have buttons no argument. If you disagree with that you’re just wrong. My #1 regret is it’s an AWD not a 4WD especially with the NPS starting to crack down (justifiably) on the trail damage that AWDs are causing. I’m thinking about jumping to the Land Cruiser or new gen 4runner
Pepper is around and free to roam as he wishes but his in the tent most of the time. LoL. House dog... at first he was confused but now he lets her pet him.

Land Cruiser would be a great choice. I just opt to the Honda because it was much cheaper, NA V6 and no mark up. And toyota been slipping on quality control with their new suvs and truck. As much as I hate to say this but that's what happens when it's made in US...
I recently rode in the third row of an Ascent, they are nice, but he's right, they are small. With 7 adults it was cramped.

Got my outback last year, it was either Crv or the Outback and i went with the Subaru simply because of safety. Safety not just for my driving but also if i get hit, i think my probability to survive in a Subaru is higher 😂
Subaru is one of the safest cars on the road.

The Ascent will give you the most cargo space but the Forester has better MPG and is more nimble.

they are two very different vehicle! Tacoma was my first Truck and altho I love the capability and able to haul stuff around with ease but I like the outback for the security that I could leave my cargo in the back without worrying about being stolen.
Seat belt chime turn acc on doors closed click your seat belt in and out 35 times fast like with in 30 seconds then turn key off and then when you start it the chime will go off

i watch to see all the goodies he gets to test out on a camping trip. i had a highlander before my subbie.. it was a great vehicle. just a lot of car for my driving needs. went to subaru for safety features. waiting for the right EV for me. i hate the infotainment center.

Well, with all those mods.. come sacrifices to mpg. I get 27 city mpg with a 2017 Forester XT. As far as storage goes. I have 2 kids and never found an issue with the ex's 2014 Outback on trips.. sad to see you go but hey. Better luck next time. As someone who moved from a 2005 Legacy GT to a 17 Forester XT, with 2 kids. I'm happy with what subaru offers. I just find ways of making it all work.
yes, I am very aware of loss in the MPG with my mods but I was no where near the suggested MPG rating when the car was stock so thats why it was on that list. I am sure I could be fine with the outback too if it was just 4 of us but our father in law is moving in with us so 3 adults and 2 car seat in the OBW wont work out too well.

Oh man, I have a 24 OBW, and the nannies on it can be pretty annoying. The phantom obstacles that kick in the brakes is especially annoying.
Anyway, the Ascent doesn't really do it for me either. Something like a Land Cruiser or the Lexus version would be my choice for 3 row dad mobile.

other than what I've said in the video, I have not had any other issues with the CVT.
Be careful taking your Outback or other AWD vehicles into National parks.
My 2023 Tacoma TRD OR averages 18.5mpg in the city mostly and 26.1mpg on highway drives.
My 2005 Outback XT Limited manual has digital A/C and the blend door is dead and killed the display and radio. The driver’s side blows hot air and I can’t turn the vent to recirculate to not have air flow.

I have the 2024 outback wilderness. My gas mileage is much better then yours, my mileage went down a little bit after I added the rooftop box but I'm still getting 24.9. I generally like the car but yes there are a few annoying things. I agree the so called safety features are over the top. They try to make it safer but then you have to take your eyes off the road to change things on the info screen. The beeping features are crazy, just 1 example if you stop the car, put it in park and open the door to do something like reach the bank teller screen, get something out of the back seat or whatever it keeps beeping. What is it trying to tell me that I left the key in the ignition? It has no key to leave.
Yes the front seat does feel cramped. It's very difficult to install the usb cord into the dash. I would also like to add that a lot of people use these cars for car camping like myself and something that doesn't make sense is that it doesn't come with a remote starter. Subaru wants you to do a monthly subscription and use an app on your phone. Well first of all I don't want another monthly bill and secondly I go camping in areas most of the time that doesn't have good cell reception or any at all. I tried to get a remote starter installed and the company told me they didn't have one to work with the subaru right now, didn't know how long it would take if ever. This is a major drawback I think because without putting the car in ac mode you can't roll up or down the windows as needed for air while laying in the back. Also you can't start the car to turn on the heater for a few minutes before you get out of your sleeping bag. I use 2 sticks for this application to press the gas pedal and one for the start button, and then I had to tape a stylus to one of the sticks to use on the info screen to adjust the temperature or fan. It's all kind of silly but I wish they would make upgrades to cars that people want. Thanks for providing a platform for me to rant. Again generally I do like the car.
wow that is a great gas mileage you are getting. I was getting no where near that when my car was stock... and yes.. the door open chiming is really weird.. it shouldnt be chimming if you have the car in park. so what I do is after I open the door, I press the rubber switch right near the door hinge and it will think the door is closed.. its very annoying. and I 1000% agree with you on the remote starter. I do have to peek half way out of my sleeping bag to turn the car on LOL

I am just finding this out now.
I have a 24 outback wilderness, 6000 miles. does anybody have a rear strut bounce? I push down on the rear bumper hard 3 or 4 times, let go and the car bobs up and down 3 or 4 times. Every other car bobs 1 1/2 times. I went to dealership they replaced them and the new ones are even worse. you can feel it bouncing when hitting dips in the road, cant be good for the tires. Anyone?
I had the opposite experience where the suspension was so hard, going over a speed bump at 13 miles, made a huge Thud sound. Like the spare tire was loose. They also said it was NORMALL. But over time, suspension got softer and it's fine now.
Ive got a 23 OBW and I wont be getting another Subaru unless they drop the CVT and change the infotainment system

p.s. Forgot to add the Subaru, well really any CVT is another big reason to avoid. I just don't like the way CVTs drive. Very boring to drive. Give me a manual and then a traditional automatic and no CVT or DCT.
