    I grew up in Austin in the 70s. We were underage, but the doorman at Antone's, the blues club in Austin, would let us in to hear this kid from Dallas. We had no idea what he would become, but we knew he was special. RIP Stevie.

    Tommy Shannon, bass, was Stevie's best friend. Chris Layton, drums, was in Stevie's former band before Tommy joined. Both stayed with Stevie when he decided to go out on his own.

    I saw him live and didn't stand still, that's for sure. I was right in front, his sweat dripping on me from the stage. It was a dream to finally see him live. He was dead two weeks later. I will never get over it.

    This is a great example of Stevie playing both lead AND rhythm guitar parts at the same time. The churning of the rhythm along with the melody. He did this alot, but I think this is the best song to see and hear it.

      Those offbeat chops, so effortlessly worked in. Watch that circular motion of his pick hand. Little stabs and runs , yeh, but worked into that unrelenting offbeat chop. Supreme mastery.

    This is from SRV and DT's first show at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. They were the first unsigned (to a record contract) to be invited to play Montreux. The audience, expecting a night of quiet acoustic music actually booed Stevie, if you can imagine it. They didn't quit, didn't back down, played like he always did 100%. They were still a trio at this point as Reese Wynans didn't join until 1985, the year they went back to Montreux as headliners and brought the house down.

    My oldest son was a blues guitar progeny when he was a teenager and was obsessed with SRV. Bluesman Jesse Lee Robinson took him under his wing and invited him to play at the infamous Subway Lounge in Jackson, MS. One of the best moments of my life was watching my 15 yr old kid rip into this song and the whole PLACE went insane. I'll never forget that. Bless you, Jesse. 🥰❤️✌️🤘 I should also add that the club owner told me that night he was officially the youngest person to ever play the Subway. 🤘

    I see the others commenting about the situation at that festival. But I will attest that when I saw him live in Denver in 1984, he hit the first chords of the first song, and we were driven to our feet, and had to move the whole concert long. The vibrations he created just went right through you. I think the timbre of Steve's voice in the mid range is very similar to Ray Charles' sound.

    Stevie was first and foremost a Texas Bluesman. He loved Hendrix and dabbled in a variety of other genres including jazz, but in his heart, it was all about the Blues. Listen to Albert King. He was a huge influence, and a God Father to Stevie. The only two songs I’d recommend in the studio version are “Life By The Drop” and “Tick Tock.” You can hear his R and B voice on those. Keep on the Stevie train! Thanks, Donna G❤

    As for "just sitting..not hearing.." u cant see the crowds - its pitch black!! There's no way those audiences arent appreciating Stevie...and some might be dancing or whatever....u cant see them! ....today everyone would be standing but all holding up their fones!! Lol wont be dancing! Theres lots of footage of Stevie playing in smaller places & EVERYONE is dancing...but thats more in clubs/bars. Most reactors are slack jawed in amazement..staring at Stevie then saying they dont know wat to say...imagine being in front of him LIVE ...dont think dancing wud b on ur mind..you'd b mesmerised...i love dancing but if i saw this band i'd be locked onto Stevie and just watch his amazing talent! 🤟

    I really like how you identify and call out what's happening on things like the bass guitar line and the drums and all that. As a musician that has played most about at least a lot of different instruments in various bands over the years, it's great to hear somebody notice that stuff and feel its effect. I noticed you were doing that with the bass guitar line on Elvis Presley Suspicious Minds as well. Those are both cases of where the front guy surrounds himself with the absolute best.
    And what works so well about the song and it's actually a style that has existed before Stevie Ray vaughan, sort of a jump Blues kind of thing, but he just makes it so smooth and liquid and danceable and he does that rotational rhythm guitar strumming for the most part and it throws little licks in there you know while he's singing, it's not that the base is copying the guitar, it's at the bases walking and occasionally doing that staccato really fast thing while it walks, it's that it stays on the downbeat and provides the framework and then it's the guitar that it's just super heavy on the backbeat. Usually it's going to be heavy on the downbeat and leave it up to the drummer with the snare drum to delineate the back b. But in that particular style, it's just such a great walking setup it has all that motion and then it's just reinforced by the guitar on the offbeat, which technically is what reggae music does a lot. You'll hear things on the offbeat like the guitar and even in the drum stuff that you wouldn't normally expect. But then again the base doesn't often hit on the downbeat, it often delays in pauses comes in on the back beat and then at some point hits the downbeat just to remind you.

    If you look quickly, you may notice the "Stevie circle". One of his trademarks is his strumming with his right hand. You can see the circular motion(like a train), pumping the verses. One of the first things I learned on guitar was that circular strum.

    • @mikefetterman6782
      @mikefetterman6782 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is Tommy Shannon on bass. One of Stevie's friends, he and SRV went to rehab in 1985 (both were heavily addicted to cocaine, Stevie being treated, even with IV fluids on more than one occasion for being nearly or completely comatose right before a show.)

    • @mikefetterman6782
      @mikefetterman6782 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a regular strat (no such thing as a large bass strat.) Tommy Shannon (using the fender bass) plays bass, and althoug shaped similar to the strat, it has always been called a P-bass, (Precision bass). Fender also has a jazz bass, but Fender is the company, strat is a style, they also have a telecaster, jaguar, jazzmaster, and others. The Fender 6 string bass from the late 60s and early 70s was used by the Beatles (John, and George would play the Fender 6 string) on songs like Hey Jude, where Paul put down his Hofner bass, and played piano,

    0:36 great point about the live aspect. But now that you appreciate how amazing he is and really how amazing that band is, I strongly encourage you to go listen to the studio Cuts as well. This is how we all first heard them on the radio and then we would go out and buy the record album and hear it there. And I did see him live three times so unless you went to one of his concerts there wasn't any internet or TH-cam you could hop on and just see what he looked like live. So these Studio Cuts were the stuff that we lived in breathed as early Stevie Ray Vaughan fans. They're very important to a lot of people. And they're just so well done. Three people and then a bit later four people, putting out all that incredible vibe and energy and virtuosity. It's mind-blowing.

    Blues....exactly right. Stevie's bass player was Tommy Shannon, and the drummer was Chris Layton. Reese joined the band a while after the time of this video. Stevie learned from and became friends with many of the great Blues musicians. One in particular was Albert King. They had a pretty special relationship. If you get a chance, you should watch an improvisational video of Albert King and Stevie playing together. "Blues at Sunrise". It's pretty good and I think you would enjoy it.
    On a side note, one of the reasons you don't see the audience moving around or "participating" in his videos is that many of the videos you might see are from TV show performances where audiences were supposed to keep it cool. Videos from the Capitol Theater have the audience getting into it.

    Another you must witness is: Crossfire

    From Huey Lewis:
    Huey: Around 1984 our tour was sold out. The agent said, "Who do you want to open?"
    I said, "Stevie Ray Vaughan."
    He said, "Who's that?"
    I said, "Check the record out." I sent him the record. "He said, "It's great. Let me check into it."
    Stevie Ray's manager at the time asked for more money than they were worth. My agent said, "This is ridiculous. We can't pay them this kind of money. They're not worth anything. We're just helping them by putting them on the tour. They should be paying us. Blah, blah, blah."
    I said, "Forget about it. Just pay him. Trust me. You'll be glad you did."
    The first show was in Oklahoma City. I showed up early and went straight to the wings of the stage. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble with Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton. They were just killing it. Then the song ended and there was a moment of dead silence. Then the audience started chanting, “Huey, Huey, Huey, Huey."
    I thought, "Oh my gosh. That's horrible. These people don't get this." I couldn't believe it.
    Double Trouble finished their set. They were put off by the reaction and went into their bus.
    I went onto their bus and told them, "Look, fellas, you're tremendous. Here's the thing, the audience is invested in us. They know our music. They play the record on the way to the venue. No matter how good you are, they're bound to think that we're going to be much, much better. There's no way you're going to score here.
    "What's going to happen is, when they go home tonight, they're going to say, 'Hey, you know what? That first band was pretty good.'"
    I said, "Just relax. Have a great time. Believe me, this will be good for you guys."
    They did and we had a wonderful tour. Stevie Ray got on stage and played “Bad Is Bad” with us every single night. We just were inseparable for the whole tour.

    Yep. I’m not bored yet. Keep him coming. And... I can see your comparison to Ray Charles. If you want another great (but very different) guitarist, try Dire Straits song “Sultans of Swing” Alchemy Live version. It’s the best version I’ve seen or heard. That’s another band on top of their game at that time. Lead singer and guitarist is Mark Knopfler.
