You really need to listen to SRV performing Life Without You Live . This man never had one guitar lesson and could not read music ... all from the soul. Watch this video and see he switched guitars and never missed a beat. Watch all the different ways he played his guitar. We love and miss this one of a kind genious.
“Tin Pan Alley” live with Johnny Copeland is 100% a pure lesson in blues perfection! The sound in the video is very, very good and their voices really project. Of course Copeland is a legend but SRV’s guitar playing is just from another planet!
There is a sound check video of Stevie where he walks out in a white leopard overcoat. Totally cold he breaks out into some of the hottest blues licks you ever heard. Better than the vast majority of concerts from other people. SRV was incredible.

The audience is sitting in shock and amazement. Everyone is watching his hands. I read somewhere that people would bring binoculars so they could watch his hands. I'm the same way - I sit transfixed just watching his fingers flying over the strings. His clothing was usually Tex-Mex, totally cool. Also he never played a song the same way twice, so check out everything you can find on him, it's all out-of-this-world.

When Stevie was playing, people were mesmerized.
When you're in the presence of such greatness, you don't want to miss anything this man plays! I saw him 4 times and was totally in awe and flabbergasted watching him play. We gave him standing ovations after every single song! Getting up and dancing would've taken away from witnessing what he was doing. Believe me, SRV could feel the love and RESPECT from all of the audiences I was in. He was amazing!!! And very loved by his fans.
Along with what you said, I am guessing this particular performance was made for the Austin City Limits TV show. And I would guess they probably asked the audience to refrain from any cheering during the songs in order to get the best possible recording.

They say SRV played with the thickest strings available and still broke them. He was a vessel from a super power that they used him to channel music through because he played so effortlessly.

Hendrix died when Stevie was 16.He never got to see him play, but his older brother Jimmie opened a show for Hendrix. This was filmed for Austin City Limits and I believe they asked the audience to keep it down a bit so they could get good sound on tape. You should watch some other live performances. They get into it big time.

He's wearing an Oriental kimono.... This was taped live for the tv show Austin City Limits, in Austin Texas, from their studio on the University of Texas campus in Studio 6A... Since 2011, it has been taped at The Moody Theatre. Beacause it's taped for tv, they don't want people jumpin all over the place lol. It's usually shown on PBS on Saturday nights. They feature all kinds of genres of music. Great show. Being that Stevie is from the area, he has many friends and family in attendance, as well as industry execs checking him out. This is 1983, his first performance on ACL. See his return engagement in 1989. Blows the roof off the joint.
Further to what Kevin said, the background is an image of the Austin skyline at night, hence the confusion over whether he was outdoors or not and the scale of the place vs the size of the stage. Great reaction.

Stevie idolize Hendrix and he wore the scarfs when he first started out in honor of Hendrix. Another fact about Stevie is he did not stage clothes and street clothes what ever he would wear on stage he would also wear it out in public.
HOPE THIS ANSWERS SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS.....Born and raised in Dallas, Vaughan began playing guitar at age seven, initially inspired by his elder brother, Jimmie Vaughan. In 1972, he dropped out of high school and moved to Austin, where he began to gain a following after playing gigs on the local club circuit. Vaughan joined forces with Tommy Shannon on bass and Chris Layton on drums as Double Trouble in 1978 and established it as part of the Austin music scene; it soon became one of the most popular acts in Texas. He performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982, where David Bowie saw him play. Bowie contacted him for a studio gig that resulted in Vaughan playing blues guitar on the album Let's Dance (1983), before being discovered by John Hammond who interested major label Epic Records in signing Vaughan and his band to a record deal. Within months, they achieved mainstream success for the critically acclaimed debut album Texas Flood. With a series of successful network television appearances and extensive concert tours, Vaughan became the leading figure in the blues revival of the 1980s. Playing his guitar behind his back or plucking the strings with his teeth as Jimi Hendrix did, he earned fame in Europe, which later resulted in breakthroughs for guitar players like Robert Cray, Jeff Healey, Robben Ford, and Walter Trout, amongst others.
During the majority of his life, Vaughan struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction. He also struggled with the personal and professional pressures of fame and his marriage to Lenora "Lenny" Bailey. He successfully completed rehabilitation and began touring again with Double Trouble in November 1986. His fourth and final studio album In Step reached number 33 in the United States in 1989; it was one of Vaughan's most critically and commercially successful releases and included his only number-one hit, "Crossfire". He became one of the world's most highly demanded blues performers, and he headlined Madison Square Garden in 1989 and the Beale Street Music Festival in 1990.
On August 27, 1990, Vaughan and four others were killed in a helicopter crash in East Troy, Wisconsin, after performing with Double Trouble at Alpine Valley Music Theatre. An investigation concluded that the cause of the accident was pilot error

Eric Clapton was very big also in his rise to fame Buddy Guy and Copeland were big influence as was his big brother.
Stevie was the back-up band to Eric Clapton the night of his death, and part of Eric’s entourage was on board with Stevie in the helicopter including Clapton’s manager and body guard and the last available seat left, Stevie accepted as he needed to get back home. Eric left later that morning on another helicopter! Jimmie Vaughn & Eric had to go to the morgue to identify the bodies! Just a horrible story, but at least they all died instantly in the dense fog!
There is a great Canadian documentary that is one and a half hours long with Him and one of his mentors Albert King. Just the 2 of them talking about old times and playing songs. It is a must-see and hear! You will get to know Stevie pretty well. Yes, he was a soft-spoken man. Enjoy!
Stevie was not well here in his 1983 appearance on Austin City Limits. It's his 1989 appearance & rendition of "Voodoo Child" (on Austin City Limits) that you need to see & react to. He was clean, sober, healthy & happy & you can hear & even see the difference. Plus it's the most requested version. Stevie was always great but you can tell the difference.

About Stevie sitting - I saw him play twice in the 80's and it was like the audience was so focused on watching his every
move they watched intently but quietly it seemed so as not to disturb the performance, at least thats how I perceived it. Ill never
forget seeing him live, I was floored when he was lost in the helicopter crash.

Jimi came on the scene, as we know him today, in about '67 and he died in '70. Stevie came on the scene in '83 and died in '90. They never met, regardless of what some of your subs have said.
Stevie had and played many guitars, but the one you're referring too was his number one go-to axe.

Back in the day,you did sit down in a lot of concert venues ,and people didn't scream,hoot or make noise during the performance because it was considered rude to other people wanting to hear and to the performer.Audiences waited to the end of the songs to clap.

Some of the live outdoor venues requested being seated during the songs as once someone in front stands, it forces everyone else behind to stand, and also done out of respect! I’d say most everyone at this concert was flat mesmerized by just watching him play, but jamming inside as you would expect!
I should not have to point out just how good the band behind him is. They just go with the flow the entire time without missing a single note or beat.

Saw him 4x. The first two were in small venues of maybe 2500 people. Third time was double that and the last time was in I believe 1989 or 1990 and he was playing in front of 15,000. Best seats we had were for our second show where we had 3rd row just to the right of center stage. That was back about 1984 when Couldn't Stand the Weather had just come out. He walked out and sat on an amplifier right in front of his, put his head down and broke into Tin Pan Alley. He never once lifted his head. Just played. Everyone was in awe. For the encore, he came back out on stage with a full length, floor touching Comanche Indian head dress and shuffled around playing Scuttle Buttin'. And as far as folks not reacting during the shows, I think it was because we were just blown away. It was like Hendrix reincarnated. Stevie was a jaw dropper. We yelled and cheered, but you had to be broken out of your trance. We were hypnotized and mesmerized.
I saw Stevie 3 times and believe me nobody was sitting on their hands.
If the people aren’t dancing is because they’re hypnotized by his performance, that’s all it is 👍🏼
Just an observation: That shirt he is wearing is one that Hendrix wore when he was on the Dick Cavett Show back in the seventies ! If you watch Hendrix at Woostock you will notice the diamond ear studs he had which didn't come into style for men for another 10 years.

You have got to give props to the drummer for keeping the beat! Stevie was awesome and I love his music. No others have risen to the top to match him or over take him. He was also known to have changed a broken guitar string while playing. There is a video on TH-cam that shows it.
It's probably been mentioned already, but Stevie's onstage wardrobe is his everyday clothes. Whatever dude would perform in is just what he wore all the time. Style for days.
The drummer is Chris Layton. Last time I saw him he was playing with Kenny Wayne Shepard. They might be touring this year I think that he is going to be in Atlanta soon. I didn't get to see Stevie or Jimi live but Kenny is extremely talented. He met Stevie and said that he was greatly influenced by him. Stevie live at the el macambo is mandatory. He called that guitar his first wife. It was his number one favorite. He also did a number of interviews that you can Google. One of the great things about Stevie was that gave credit to the ones who came before. He found the man who wrote Texas flood and gave him money out his pocket because the man had not received his royalties. Also when some people play the music slams you in your seat and holds you there. You don't realize that you are holding your breath until the music stops and you exhale...

Jimmy was a hero to Stevie... NO one could do Jimmy other than Stevie and do it justice ... end of story. There are Loads of great guitarists out there but Stevie was, and is the GOAT! Never be another like him. sad indeed.
This was his 1983 appearance on Austin City Limits which is a PBS concert show. He also appeared on the show in 1989 and did this same song. I personally prefer the 1989 performance. Drummer is Chris Layton. Bassist is Tommy Shannon. Show is not in a stadium. I heard a Chris Layton interview where he said that most performers had stage clothes and everyday clothes but Stevie dressed like that all the time.

This is Austin City Limits. An outdoor Austin venue that has live artists for decades now. They broadcast it live on TV as Austin City Limits. Famous TV show, famous venue. Everyone has played there. It’s one of the longest broadcasting shows on TV. It’s been around forever. Live Music is one of THE things Austin is known for.
You lament being born too late to see them perform live and I get it. Same with me and many musicians I love. But we’re lucky to be born after their time on this earth and not before. We have an incredible wealth of great musicians to enjoy. Good vid.

When I get to Heaven, and as Jesus is escorting me to my mansion, I'm going to ask Him if we could make a stop at Stevie Ray Vaughans pad first! So sad that he was taken too soon from us but what a musical genius and a legend! Whew! The man is on fire!!! The shirts he wears on stage most of the time is a Kimono. Has no buttons just a belt. I figured he wore them because they were least restrictive, gave him room to do his thang!!! You really need to watch the full El Mocambo show from 1983. It will blow your socks off !!!

Whoever told you that back in the day people just sat still and enjoyed the music like a lump on a log, didn't know what they were talking about. This video is from a taping of the PBS television show "Austin City Limits" and the audience is told what they can and can't do during the taping. Same thing for the other videos where you saw the people sitting still, I'd bet anything they were every one, a tv show.. If they did anything to cause a distraction or commotion during a live recording of a TV show, they would have been removed from the studio . Look at ANY concert footage and you can see all the dancing, singing, clapping and having a good time you want to see. Concerts were wild as heck back in the day, not wild as in violent, but wild as in everyone was there to hear good music and to have some fun at the same time. I should know, I went to every one I possibly could. When you see people sitting in chairs behaving themselves, you are NOT watching a concert. You are watching a tv audience that has been instructed on what's tolerated while they are filming. Technology was not what it is today either, I'm sure they had to limit the amount of background noise. None of that applied at rock concerts, or concerts of any other genre,

He absolutely was doing stadiums. I saw him at a ton of smaller places, but also he and Jeff Beck playing at the Erwin Center stadium in Austin.
In the day there was dancing music and then there was listening and jamming music. Stevie had both in his arsenal.

Austin City Limits that I know of. This is the earlier show in the 80s
and there is a later show. This is a great show but I love his last show there. His last show he had gotten clean of cocaine addiction and is playing completely sober. You can see how healthy and happy he looks on the later show. The version of voodoo Chile on the second show is amazing....

I started going to see Stevie in various clubs in Austin 🇨🇱 in the mid to late 70's. He played all over Austin and you could see him for a $2.00 cover! I would scream and holler after the song was over but while he was playing I sat there mesmerized at the sounds he pulled out of that guitar and watching his fingerwork. I'd look around and see most of the crowd leaning forward, eyes wide, and open mouthed in amazement. Stevie could give you goosebumps and make you cry while you were smiling. Last time I saw him was '85 on the Texas Flood tour. He will always be my blues guitar 🐐! Great reaction!😁❤️✌️
Stevie played a lot of hendrix and did it in way way that no others could. As a kid, I remember listening to the radio late one night in the early/mid eighties to a live show and being blown away by some guy I never heard of. It turned out to be Stevie.
I saw him restring a guitar in the middle of playing it. I kid you not, I could not believe it. I saw BB King do that one time, but BB was letting others carry the song and then broke back into the groove.
SRV did it in the middle of playing a song, but that guitar is just like another part of his body.
He often times will tune his guitar in the middle of playing it. Sometimes he was bending the strings so hard that they would stretch and he had to tweak them.
Chris Layton, one of the great blues drummers of all time. Stevies wearing a Japanese Komodo. Listen to a live broadcast called “The Fire Meets The Fury”. In ‘89 just months before he died. Its amazing so much more if you can imagine these songs getting better they did, even his singing is more intense, look it up. Fire!
SRV's blues creds and virtuosity is both other-worldly... and unmatched. If there be "guitar gods", then he be one.

This is from a TV show called "Austin City Limits" It has a small stage that looks like outside but is just a set. There are probably 250 - 300 people in audience and a little more subdued than an actual concert. This guitar is his #1 as he calls it and yes he plays other guitars. Mostly Stratocasters but seen him play a custom guitar that has strat style with a Hamilton neck.

The sitting down depends on the venue. Smaller venues with fixed seating really weren't conducive to standing during a concert.
As far as the guitar goes he played other ones, but that one was his favorite. There is at least 1 video out there were an important string breaks, he continues playing while a guitar tech brings out a new guitar. Without missing a beat he swaps to the new guitar.
Yes SRV had swag, and style. He even came out dressed like a Pimp sometimes. That is just a Scarf around his neck. They sometimes looked like Ascots, but were mainly just Scarfs. Keeps the sweat from running down your neck.
SRV sings a lot on 'Life Without You', a song written by SRV. It's not a major blues song but it's my favorite live show....the one at Capitol Theater.

A couple of months ago I went to a blues concert featuring Buddy Guy and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The guy next to me (who I didn't know) was really into it and asked me "is that Stevie Ray Vaughn's drummer?" I said I didn't know but it looked like him. So I Googled it and it said Chris Layton was in Double Trouble and now drums for Kenny Wayne Shepherd. They were awesome.
He played and recorded at Carnegie Hall. To small clubs. I seen him at waterloo village In New Jersey.

This concert looks like it took place at Austin City Limits; which you can look up online about. He was an incredible player and he is truly missed. You might check out Superstition that's another great song he does.

I love elements of his guitar playing in this version and the prominence of the drums, but my favorite renditions are from his other Austin City Limits concert with him in black jeans and leather vest, and the version at the El Mocambo!!!

Stevie's mother and I were close friends. I stayed over several times in 2007. In her guest room closet hung some of his clothes. One jacket i remember in particular was a charcoal denim that looked like Jackson Pollock got a hold of it. I've never seen a picture of him wearing it, but I sure wish I could.
Chris Layton is the drummer, Tommy Shannon is the bass player, later Reese Wynans joined on keyboards. Awesome crew. Layton and Shannon went on to play with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Wynans plays for Joe Bonamassa.

From my history of going to gigs I've sat down and been in the pit many times and the pit is great its an experience but when you sit you just get mesmerised by the artists and their music its 2 different experiences to me
SRV is the best...I was lucky enough to see him on his last tour, 3 months before he died. He was clean and sober and put on such an amazing performance. Believe me...we and others around us were not sitting still and were groovin to this amazing music! I was so crushed when he died. I was on my way to the gym with my boyfriend and heard it on the radio, we turned around and headed home. Friends headed over and we drank our sorrows away as best we could. Sitting around in shock for hours. We were all so sad. I love the song Couldn't Stand the Weather, you could check that one out. Thanks for your reactions!

I got Stevie at number one, Hendrix two. Its close, they are even on talent and ability. I just give Stevie the nod because he had so much soul, he put so much feeling into it. Not that Hendrix didn't.... You should check out a video where a string breaks and he works around it and switches guitars on the fly. So smooth.

One of my favorite things about Stevie is you can find all the recordings of any song of his you choose...Listen to all of them and not a single time will he play the song the exact same way... Never... His brother Jimmy famously said Stevie never played it the same once, much less twice.

I’ve seen both Hendrix and SRV live. The thing to remember is before Hendrix, no one was doing what he was doing… there were no effects pedals but a fuzz pedal and a wah wah pedal… With Hendrix it was charting new territory.. With SRV it was taking what Jimi had done, and exploding it into space and heading into another galaxy…

When I met Stevie Ray Vaughn that Stubbs BBQ when he was bringing people to stuff's BBQ because he used to feed them and when they start with us I asked him about the wide guitar strap he said that's so that when I decided to turn around and play it by my back I've got a little more control he was an awesome individual and I got to tell you when I drink Crown and Coke at his table and we were talking stop was guitar strings and everything else what a wonderful human being he was
