I think this match we've seen Magnus play Ian's temperament. He played long in game 6 to tire Nepo out and today Nepo wobbled. It's going well for him because he's not afraid to play the man not just the board. Such mastery.
What's evident at this level, against SGMs (per se) is that a, bad day at the office is simple 1 bad move. 1 bad move, and that's it. Incomprehensible. Just how strong these players are at this top level.
3:04:10 and 3:28:40 even if you're not strong enough to understand everyting that's going on, you know there's a blunder when a player makes a move and the winning odds increase for the other side. :-/
@@musicmusic6595 He has to, in the end of the 6 game that Magnus won for the first time he mentioned that he was a little more patient at the end which is what helped him, this may not be Nepo's strong point but now at 2 points down he's literally at the bottom and hopefully will do whatever it takes to beat Magnus.
@@Mdkx I really hope so i would love nepo to win but i got this gut feeling he is going to get tired / drawn out. Nepo is just as good as magnus in my opinion, he's just not as consistent which is what sort of seperates him.
@@Mdkx Yeah it's horrible because nepo is as good as magnus and on his day possibly even better a more creative and gambling player for sure. In my opinion i think it's health / energy, nepo looks more out of shape while magnus in general looks better and less pasty, as the days have gone on Nepo has faded too which tells me it is an energy issue and not so much a mental one. Weird analysis but iv got a lot of experience in human health as well as performance.
2:41:45 David: Definity with this last move, Magnus is biding this time and waiting for Nepo to make his move. Fabiano Caruana: OMG, that was a brilliant move which deals with Queen D6 and other threats by Nepo. I don’t claim to understand 90% of any of this, but Fabi’s analysis is clearly superior (as it should be going by his FIDE rating)

I'm new to chess so sorry if I sound uneducated on this but why does Magnus and Ian walk away for sometimes long periods of time ? what do they do ? is it seem rude to walk away mid game ?
Magnus was confused by h5 and after 40 minutes decided to concede an implied draw (queen exchange) unsure if this was preparation or board play. Ian mistakenly carried on with no plan by not accepting the queen exchange. Then he blundered his way to a dispiriting loss. Nepo collapsed under Magnus's relentless pressure and psychological torment.
Easy to say in hindsight bias. I'm rooting for Magnus, but cmon, that's like saying LeBron James is affected by hyena tactics.. Some athletes do better under pressure. After 2 games up though, Ian isn't one of them.
@@michaeljoseph577 Hehe, I don’t fully understand the hyena analogy, but it made me chuckle. I think Nepo was exhausted and felt unnecessarily that he had to do something special in game 8, while Magnus was very happy to draw, rest, strategize and return. Basically, Nepo went on tilt. But you’re right, it’s very easy to say that in hindsight and from the outside.
@@MeatBunFul Magnus is up 5-3. There are 14 games so to win a player needs 7.5 or more. There are 6 more games. Magnus needs 2.5 to win (5 +2.5=7.5). He could achieve this in many ways. Five draws, one win and three draws, two wins and a draw, three wins.
I like chess but I do have to say the commentators honestly annoy me when they just assume what’s going and are like it’s gonna likely draw after 3 moves
He needs 2.5 points out of 6 games so 2 wins and a draw or 5 draws. Ian needs 4.5 points from 6 games which means 3 wins and 3 draws or 4 wins and a draw. Virtually impossible against a defensive magnus.
I think 4:42:20 shows why Magnus won. The loser should be doing exactly what Magnus did and the winner what Nepo did. Admittedly this is what I would gather if this was a movie, but you get what I'm saying.
