I’m just rewatching this match. Everyone made more of Magnus adjusting that piece than they should have in my opinion. The key evidence that Magnus simply adjusted the piece, other than that there is no sensible move for the knight, is the body language right before touching the piece. If you pay close attention to his sight line, he isn’t pondering that piece whatsoever. His eyes flicker over to it and seems so adjust it on impulse. He does not linger or attempt any move other than a subtle twist, raises a hand and continues with his plan. The other point I’d like to make is that, when they originally show the replay, the footage was slowed down and even perhaps paused. This gave the impression that more consideration was given to the piece than there actually was. Take a look at the actually real time replay from this angle. You can clearly see Magnus notice his knight was facing slightly the wrong way and twists it ever so slightly so the snout faces more at a 90 degree angle. 2:56:47
I think Ian was already feeling inferior to Magnus since Game 1 when he said that was the worst game in chess championship history, like he didnt feel he was at the same level of Magnus. When he blunders in this game he spent a lot of time to return to the table and when he does he gives a little smile to Magnus almost saying "Did you see it? I blunder again". I really feel sorry for him. But he never felt that actually could beat Magnus.

GM Howell is slightly wrong about the Fischer blunder... Fischer calculated several moves deeper, the idea was to rescue the bishop. But he calculated the rescue one move short apparently so he didn't see the bishop couldn't be saved. In the film "Pawn Sacrifice", they present the mistake as if he didn't spot g3 which is a bit of an insult. So I don't think these 2 mistakes are comparable as Fischers was a fairly deep mistake, Nepos was a next move mistake, unless he saw c6 but miscalculated further down the line.
