    As someone who had a psio and switched to xstation... updates form the developers at psio are much slower. Was promised a memcardpro update back in June or July, and here it is December. Also mostly people that continue to ask about an update in their forums, have been silenced, even as far as to have threads in the forum be locked due to too many people asking for updates. Also at times, bootup takes forever, and sometime simply hangs on bootup when specific controllers are plugged in. Not sure if this is an issue with voltage being used by the controllers/memory cards or what, but almost can NEVER get it to boot with 2 controllers plugged in, and 2 memory cards. I eventually gave up on the memcardpro support, and modded my own PS1 with Xstation. Although the system is much more simple... it boots probably at least.... 5x faster? psio appears to have a lot of features, but if you're looking for something fast and just works without jumping through hoops for firmware updates and having your games in a VERY specific format, then go with the xstation.

      PSIO isn't as awful as it's made out to be, you'll spend more time in game prep, finding working images, re-riping games and using the app to get it working. You only have to do that once, and then it's fantastic.

    • @bruceg22000

    Sucks how many people got a PSIO about a year or 2 ago but for us Aussies getting this was cheaper due to local shipping. Because this removes the usage the optical drive I recommended people buy a separate compatiable ps1 motherboard since its actually cheaper to get these days and simply swap the board with the XStation installed.
    I hope next month the GC loader will have enough in stock for ordering, trying to convert a multiple consoles to use SD/Micro cards is costly but saves a lot of money than paying for physical game copys in the long run.

    Maybe I am missing something somewhere but I never registered my PSIO nor did I have to create any kind of account. Ordered from StoneAgeGamer, you are sent a paper with the information you use to download updates, nothing registered and no account needing to be created. You literally just enter the email address, order number, and serial number from the original purchase. You don't have to login to anything after this and you just download the update. Is it different if you order from another vendor? Second hand purchases aren't affected either because you just give them the info from the paper. This is why I have no clue why I keep seeing people claiming they are "unable to transfer ownership" ...do they mean they can't change the email address? It's not used for anything other than original order verification.

    To fix PS1 lasers, recap them as they have caps that go bad over time. The lasers themselves don't actually go bad. Granted in most cases buying a "new" PS1 and simply switching lasers is easier and cheaper (which is why the myth exists that they burn out instead of the caps going bad).

    Been using a PSIO for over a year and it's fine. Might be a bit slower to start up, but it's not a big concern really unless you like to change games ever few minutes or something ridiculous like that. I like having my CD there to use for my actual physical games too (mostly my imports). PS2/PS3 are fine options for PS1 discs too, but unless they are modded you still can't play your imports. Now if they ever come out with a PSOne version I'd be a in for the XStation on one of those.

      Not IT I spent around a year playing around with Free McBoot on PS2 and eventually just realized the hassle and effort is just not worth it.
      Games were either glitchy or wouldn’t boot, Compatibility was limited and you spend more time with settings and tinkering than actually playing. And after all that, there’s too much fear to play the game because you don’t wanna be part way through and have it crash on you. And yes I was playing via HD and not USB.
      Free MCBoot has nothing on the simplicity of GDEmu, Phoebe or PSIO which I all have and require little work. Hell playing backup Wii and GameCube games via Wii homebrew is perfect by comparison with near 100% compatibility and no glitches once set up.

  • @pefclic
    @pefclic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The XStation is an ESP32 (like an Arduino), that retails for around $5, with a dedicated interface to connect it, so you can expect to see it selling at $30~$50 for the firmware installed on it.
    The ESP32 is used mainly in smart light bulb connected to the Internet thanks to its WiFi capability.
    It could be interesting to use the WiFi present in the ESP32 to configure it, or select games from your phone.
    The PSIO uses an FPGA that is more expensive and less available so don't expect to see it selling much cheaper.

    Just a naive question : do you know why modding community (and retrogaming enthousiats over the world) want that much to replace optical drives by emulated devices ?
    I mean, wouldn't it be much easier, authentic and way cheaper to "simply" re manufacture brand new compatible CD lenses, and gently replace them ?
    I just don't understand. (I like so much to manipulate tangible, beloved real cds ^ ^, and not have access in one clic to the entire library which leads at the end to no real involment from me on games).
    Sorry for by bad english, I am french.

    • @Dan-km1zs
      @Dan-km1zs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm with you, there's something special about the original experience. As we move on from optical media, it's going to be harder and more expensive to find/manufacture replacement lasers and other related components. Everything from the motors to the gears, the demand for these parts is slowly dropping off, which means less sustainability for the companies still making them. People who make products like the ones in this video are preparing for the next affordable media format to preserve the games. In today's case it's sd cards. Not nearly as cool as CDs, but at least they are a cheap and reliable format. Your English is great btw 👍

      @vincentt2309 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @KenjiSeang
      @KenjiSeang 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vincentt2309 I have cd games (not scratched) from 1988 PC-Engine to xbox and they all work just fine. Same for all my friends.
      We don't have real stepback to objectivily and precisely measure cd longevity. It could survive all of us easily on theory. Conservationists were surprised to notice that electromagnetic devices (such as old tapes) last way longer than expected.
      I don't believe on a massive, general "disk root" event, it's just ponctual irrelevant "accidents". It's like paper : it's not because there are some 20 years old books stained with little mushrooms that all books are doomed to decrepit with those yellow stains after 2 decades. There are a lot of factors to consider (quality of the manufacture, handling care, types of environnemental exposition, etc. etc. etc).
      With cd, scratches are a big problem, but professionnal resurfacing (to replace old varnish with a new, more efficient and neutral) can be a solution.
      Anyway, roms are already preserved on hard drives. I understand the step here, it's cool but beside, I do not understand why no one seems to concentrate on simply re manufacturing sensible parts like lenses. Everything can be repaired / replaced in electronics.
      Thank you Dan !
      Yeah, you're right concerning optical drive technologies going to fade (it's time for dematerialized). But it's precisely here that I don't understand why retrogaming enthousiats, conservationists, don't make part of those who will perpetuate this technologie (within a small, niche market shared with audiophiles, etc.). Today, we can manufacture things halfway around the world quite easily from our rooms... compatible lenses developed by our modding communities doesn't seem impossible to my eyes. But maybe I am wrong, hence my question ^ ^

    • @KenjiSeang

      @@nickwallette6201 Thanks for the detailed answer. While I don't personally agree with 3) and 5) (for me, handling physical, tangible stuff is a deep part of my gaming pleasure and feelings, but I respect and understand), and I also understand 4) (it's the more obvious actually ^ ^). 1) is totally negligible to my eyes, I really think quality pressed CDroms, for the very moooooost part, are going to easily survive us.
      So the 2) is what bugging me. Is this that unthinkable to keep factories that could manufacture perfect quality optical drives ? (supervised, and validated by our premium engineers in the retrogaming community, the same that create and command the manufacture of all those new stuffs). Classic electromagnetic eproms are still brand new manufactured, vinyle have made a come back, etc. A market call an offer (and industrial capabilities).
