  • How To Build The Ultimate PlayStation | PS1Digital HDMI Mod and XStation ODE
    In today's episode of Retro Renew, I show you how to take an old original PlayStation and bring it up to modern standards! First, I totally tear the console down and give the shell a good deep clean. Then I replace all the capacitors on the power supply and motherboard. Up next is the PS1Digital installation which adds the highest quality video out directly from the PS1’s GPU. And last, I install the XStation ODE so you can play your entire PS1 library from an SD card. This is truly the Ultimate PlayStation build! I hope you enjoy it!

    • @SirReptitious
      @SirReptitious 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How is the compatibility with this mod? I've seen videos that replace the CD-ROM with a SD card reader and MCBoot memory card, but apparently there are a lot of games that won't work. Really defeats the purpose of a mod if it takes a lot of money and time and ends up not playing a large chunk of the library.....

    • @hopperhelp1
      @hopperhelp1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SirReptitious the xstation accepts just about every ps1 game out there. The PSIO had a lot of games that couldn’t be accepted. The only exception I can think of is an NTSC not being able to accept PAL exclusive games, but that’s more of a color thing. The PS1 digital bypasses that. (At least this is what I’ve been told but have yet to test). The Memcard pro and xstation have firmware to work with each other seamlessly.

    I love almost all JRPGs, but something about Vagrant Story is so special!
    I lived in AK and flew to HI a lot when my dad as in the military at the height of the PSX. Due to that, I have a bunch of Japanese games, mostly RPGs for the Dreamcast and the PSX. As I got older and had jobs during the PS2 era, I bought dozens of ps1 and ps2 rpgs.
    I really want to do mods like this so I can play them in HD and then preserve my collection. But it seems a bit harder than the GBC, GBA, and Gamecube ones Ive tried so far =/

      It is truly a mod for the die hard PS1 fan. And that's OK. Given the demand for the Xstation and PS1Digital kits... there are clearly plenty of diehard PS1 fans out there!
      Emulation is fine, in whichever route you want to go. Be it a PC, PS1 on PS3, playing them on PSP, using the playstation classic edition... there are no "wrong" ways to enjoy the PS1 games you like / love.
      This is a top tier, expensive solution for those who really love the PS1 and it's library. There is something to be said for seeing that original PS1 sitting there, the one you opened up on Christmas all those years ago... the one you first popped FF7 into. Playing with the original controllers. It's 100% authentic gameplay / support.... it's not for everyone. But for the big fans of the system, who have big enough wallets... it's a great setup!

I bought a PSX launch model and swapped out the motherboard with raspberry pi 4 running Lakka. I 3D printed some USB holders for the front. Also printed some holders for hdmi and network cables for the back. I am impressed with the performance of the emulation on a pi 4. When removing soldermask, I like to use a thin fiberglass "pencil" or scratch brush. It takes a few more strokes than a file, but it's a little more forgiving.

    Awesome video as always. I am planning on doing the HDMI mod to my original 5501 at some point, but I need to practice practice practice at soldering first. So jealous you have the original Silent Hill. I was looking to buy that for funsies a few weeks ago and saw that the price of that, and the other Silent Hill games are now around $200 complete. Good thing I have the second one.

      Thank you dude! I live silent hill! I luckily bought most of them when the came out starting with number 2. I bought the first one many years ago but after it was initially released. It’s crazy how expensive those games have gotten. I still want to buy frozen memories but it’s so expensive now. Cheers buddy!!

    Just finished the video. It's great and very pleasing to watch. Good idea to focus on these two mods as I think most of us will want to install these. I would add a con, so hard to get the ps1 digital mod, always out of stock! I don't think I'll install an x station anytime soon, I like the fact that modded console can still play the physical games but that's personal preference. I would be more inclined to install a psio. Also... there's 2 minutes of black silence at the end of your video.
    Eager to see the next video!

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Darenn! That’s true, the psio has the advantage of being able to play original cd games.
      Oh man I have 2 min of empty footage. That’s strange I’ll have to see if I can remove that. Thanks for the heads up!!

    I’ve found that magic erasers work surprisingly well on old console shells. I have a white ps2 that was completely yellowed and one or two passes of the magic eraser and it completely white again. Although I think the erasers are abrasive but they haven’t ruined anything.

      It could be how the system was stored. If it was in a warm humid environment it could have contributed to it leaking. I think under normal circumstances it they should typically be okay.
