Great video. I just got a fenrir and installed it the other day. I waffled between it and the mode and I think I may still buy a mode for my Dreamcast. I wanted to catch some opinions and ‘how to’s’ first though, so this really helped!

Nice overview, thanks Bob. The whole 2-piece design thing was exactly what I was expecting... I guess they went with this concept of '2-in-1' to lower the cost of producing the physical board rather than increase value to the end user.
I think they want someone to make a custom case, that can hold both hardwares with an autoswitching power supply, that can be sold to end uses to fit there own hardware, flick of a switch between forecast and saturn

I definitely will at some point, but I'd like to wait until all are on the market and mature products. That way I'm comparing solid firmware, not early firmware with bugs still to be worked out.

Already have GDemu for dreamcast and i am super happy with it. I can't buy MODE just for Saturn, it's too expensive. Unfortunately i own a version 2 Saturn with the 21 pins and i will wait for Satiator. Thanks for all the infos though, great video.

Same here, but after some days that I ask them I got mine into DHL. They are facing some dificuties to build them all, so be patient and soon you have your MODE.

sata to msata adapters work great for making an ssd take up less space. as does dismantling the drive, usually! (but will void your drive warranty)
Now that you have approved it, I will order this for my DC. I'd buy two but I'd rather wait for the Satiator.

How appropriate. I got a sega saturn yesterday
My roomate's dreamcast only reads pirated burned games and not GDRoms, so this would be an awesome replacement. A simple sata extension cable could make it easier to swap 2.5in drives.
For some reason, I've always enjoyed the loading sound of the Dreamcast. No other system I've gotten joy from hearing the disc noises. Though I've just installed the MODE on my Saturn, and it works very well. I do have the same concerns about the placement and ease of access, though I don't think it's a deal breaker.

IMO the best thing about the MODE is the option to use a 2.5" HDD or SSD. Going forward, this should be the standard for any new ODE's IMO. SD is fine for something like Sega CD and PCE CD, but the later consoles have huge libraries that are more suited to a 2.5" drive with much more storage. A Playstation ODE that supports 2.5" drives would be dope as hell.

I wish they didn't use DHL for their delivery courier company. I had big issues with them (DHL) over charging for import duty and had to fight them to charge me the right amount. What made it hard was not being able to find someone to talk to at DHL to try and sort it. Wonder if it would be available from local suppliers?

@@nattila7713 Nope, GD-ROM went under the house. I'd rather keep a working GD-ROM down the line, than keep using it now and eventually lose it. Preventative.

@@nattila7713 i see where you are coming from. I'd be right there with you if the console was modified in a permanent way. This mod is plug and play. No soldering or anything. If I drop the gdrom back in right now it would be like nothing happened.
Most consoles are much harder to find here now. I dropped this in my Saturn. I got a USB gdrom for my DC and my 3DO a while back. I like these because they don't change anything in a way that can't be easily put back

My only question is if I have a Dreamcast Sega Dreamcast system only would allow me to play my Sega Saturn games on my Sega Dreamcast 2 as well like I can load my Sega Saturn games on it and I can play them from my Dreamcast but I happen to use a Sega Saturn to play them

Hey Bob, can you make another video, with the saturn version, and make sure to let people know they made need to get a new 21 pin cable. I did, and it was a real sad time waiting for my mode, only to get it and have tons of problems caused by the 21 pin.
Mine is a 20 pin. I did have issues at first, but it was because I had the cable backwards. The way terraonion shows it going in their video wasn't the same as mine.
Is there any update on the Satiator??? I might go that route for my Saturn, considering that it's near Brain Surgery levels to put the MODE in there.
CrimsonDragoon It’s not difficult at all, the Dreamcast version is super simple, Saturn required a couple extra steps but by no means difficult.
can you use one of the 3d printed parts for the rhea (that allows sd card access from the cd cover) with a micro sd to sd card extender with the MODE or does the sd print get in the way of the mode?
How would I switch discs on my saturn if my lid switch is messed up?
My lid switch is kind of broken due to screwing up setup for the swap trick.

what is the extra wire you mention for ntsc or pal? i thought mode could play any region as it auto patches it? can you explain as i have a pal saturn and want to play usa games on it, what is the extra wire and where does it go?
It switches the console between 50hz frequency (for PAL games) and 60hz frequency (for NTSC games). The M.O.D.E should play all software without region lock, but if you want everything to run and the correct speed, you'll need to solder in that extra wire.

I understand that the read speed is limited by the console's bus, but how come the GDEMU ran faster than the MODE? If you use an SSD shouldn't it be at least AS fast as the SD in the GDEMU? That Daytona demo made me kind of cautious getting a MODE and switching it with my GDEMU.
Any news on the mounting bracket for the MODE? I’ve been keeping eye on Laserbaer’s site but I haven’t seen any mention of the bracket.

DON'T TURN ON THE DREAMCAST IF YOU "lost the plastic" FOR THE PSU!
The bottom of the PSU will probably touch the metal shield and it will short out.
Regarding the idea of having a 2 part design that allows easy access to the storage. You could get a SATA extension cable and 3d print a mount to hold it in the disk tray, you'd want a male to female adapter for this which are really cheap, and while an integrated solution would be far better, at least this way you can have the features you want without needing to wait for a future revision (if one ever released with this feature)
You could do the same for the SD card slot and the USB port too, and wouldn't cost more than about $30 to gather the extensions you need, even cheaper if you're only ever going to use 1 of the ports on the MODE. DeLOCK have a 10cm SATA extension on amazon for £11, unfortunately amazon.com doesn't have one that is as short so you'll need to find a way to fit the 30cm/12inch version into the casing.
A really nice device, but for over $200 it could be so much better and while I don't personally have either of the supported systems, if I did I'd still hold off buying it to see if Terraonion announce a rev 2, or at the very least wait for bug fixes and for it to be more feature complete.
I'm sure like with the gdmu you could have the option of getting an SD card slot extender and go about it that way
Yeah, Greg from LaserBear has made some awesome 3D printed parts + extenders. They weren't available when I shot the video, but those are great solutions.
Does the button still work on a Saturn? My lid sensor is wonky, that's part of the reason why I want an ODE
The MODE is nice overall, but I'm personally on the fence for this product. On the one hand, this ODE is a solid option for the Dreamcast since it's pretty easy to install and because laser bear is making a custom bracket for it. That alone makes it nice. On the other hand, I'm not sold on this product if it's used on a Saturn. Installation is, as you mentioned, a bit more tricky. Some models seem to have the RAM expansion cart slot get in the way of the mounts which will require cutting and that's a big no-no to me. Since the Saturn has no custom brackets, it's also more annoying to have to dissemble the entire console just to update the MODE if you decide against SD cards or thumb drives. Even then, your gonna need some kind of cable to extend into the disc drive in a crude manner to have easy access to your chosen memory format. The final nail in the coffin for me is the Satiator. It's not out yet, but once it is out it's basically gonna do the same thing the MODE does without removing the disc drive and/or taking apart the console since it sits in the expansion port in the back. In short: Dreamcast? Yes. Saturn? No.
What do you guys think. I already have a GDemu clone off ebay and I have a VGA cable running to a Atlona AT-HD-SC-500 3-Input Switcher / Scaler which makes it look great on my 4k TV. Do you think it is worth upgrading to a MODE? I am also considering purchasing a moddifable PS4 running 6.72 (though Ill prolly update to 7.55 for the Jailbreak). Do you think its better to upgrade to Dreamcast or get the modded PS4. Mind you, I already have a PS5 with PS Plus and PS Now and an XBOX One and Decent Gaming PC with Game Pass Ultimate and Im not above downloading repacks for PC. Or should I not spend money on video games? I also have a MiSTer Project boarrd and likew 25,000 Roms. Should i find a new hobby or buy more game consoles? Idk what to do.

What's the most simplest way to rip my own personal Dreamcast discs? I am looking at doing something this or GDEMU in the future if my disc drive ever goes out. I still like to own/buy all my games physical, but unless someone creates a disc drive for Dreamcast, stuff like this will be the future for Dreamcast.

@@Gunbu with the newest firmware there is a soft boot mode which brings you back to the game list by pressing "Star + ABC" on the Saturn controller... From game to game you have to click it serval times but it works! Very happy with it! 😁🤙

Yeah, mostly tweaks and bugfixes to increase the accuracy. There's occasionally some cool additions though.

I bought my Saturn in Japan a few years ago so I have to use the AR carts to load NTSC. Its failing and going right into bios. ODE seems the way to go but that pricetag... ouch.
Had the same happen to my action replay but it would refuse to play X-Men vs street fighter, because it would ask for the extra ram in japanese, but played everything else. Buying a new one fixed it, but then the power supply went out... Bought me a new one of those.... I definitely plan on putting a pico power supply and a MODE in this new Saturn

No. Something about the USB taking up too much power if all 3 were connected, if I read that correctly before.

@@Ziggurat1 No ... the HDD and USB share the same data path. They don't work at the same time and is stated in the manual.
Ziggurat What PCMCG said. I found the info in the manual after posting the reply. The SSD is blocked if the USB is occupied.
I would like to know if this is gonna be a problem for me, I have my own JP saturn but also replaced the PSU with a UK Pal type (and it was the right revision so it was plug n play) I dont know if this will confuse the system or anything, i dont see why it should but i mean i dont want to lose a saturn now do i? :P
That's a good question. I don't THINK you'll have any issues, but you might want to check terraonion's forums.

Yeah. Same here. If TerraOnion were to close up shop, or just go outta business, you'd completely lose out on the ability to add cover art etc.
I'm interested in the comment about the storage being limited by the drive bus, how do load times compare with the various storage options? HDD vs SSD in particular, as the SATA connection is appealing for a large library.
It's all pretty much the same. My choice of SSD was heat, power consumption and no moving parts. And cost of course.
@@RetroRGB Really like your video, thank you. Btw, did you touch your SSD after an hour of play ? Dreamcast is fine but Saturn has no airflow, so the inside of the Saturn gets quite hot. Sure SSD is better than HDD, but micro SD should be a better combo of heat/power consumption (but yeah, more expensive than SSD when going for 256Gb+). (oh and avoid samsung micro sd', TO said they have compatibility issues with it)
Was there even a terabyte worth of games produced for the Dreamcast? I would think that a 128 or 256GB SD card would be more than enough.
The Japanese and US sets combined are over 1TB. That's not including Europe, or other regions.

Looks like MODE is a nice piece of kit. I already have a fenrir and it meets my needs, a solution for Dreamcast would be cheaper than getting just a MODE would have been still...nice device either way. I'm curious too, does the Saturn menu run in 480i? Your capture looked like it had 480i flicker.

You could use a M.2 to SATA or remove the SSD from the 2.5" case to allow access to the USB port. SATA extension cables are also a thing, you know.
Can't use the USB in conjunction with the SATA from what I read. There's a limitation. Found this in the manual:
Question: Can I use MicroSD, SATA and USB all at the same time?
Answer: MODE does not support the usage of both SATA drives and USB drives at the same time due to
microcontroller limitations. It was purposely designed in such a way that the USB port is physically blocked
when a SATA drive is installed.
Did you know that you can remove the cover of your Samsung SSD and install a bare PCB into this ODE making a space available for USB storage?

Is this worth it be honest i really likee how it shows the cover art even though it loads slower its like point of a second so i dont mind like most of people do that km reading online i really like how i can also pop it in my dreamcast and keep all saturn nd dreamcast titles on the ssd that alone is worth it im lookin at a unit wonderin if i should pull the trigger ofcourse its being emulated anyways so technically i dont need it bc running them on a good pc is good enough I just like having the unit and controller and original hardware fml whats a guy to do that already had everything lol god damn video games lol i just dont know if i wanna pay $600+ for ps1 graphics and a system thats already 30 freaggin years old basically

...but if you love original hardware, consider a recap, ODE, HDII mod, power supply upgrade, etc. Both are great answers, it's just about the experience you're looking for. Like buying an all-original classic car, vs buying one with a brand new motor in it. Hopefully that makes sense.
I'd feel a lot better about this if the Devs made some sort of comment that if they ever close up shop they will just dump fresh firmware on the open internet that anyone can get.

Out of interest, why do people seem to prefer SSD for storage when you can get 1TB USB 3.0 sticks for far less than a SSD or MicroSD card? Is it transfer speed, so worse loading times?
That's a good question. I should try one on my mode and see how it compares.
BTW, looks like all the cheap 1TB & 2TB USB drives on Amazon are fakes. Name brand are all expensive.

This is my first time ordering from TerraOnion and I honestly am in no way impressed with their customer service. Impossible to get responses from them, and when you actually do, at best the answers are vague and at worst they're snarky and/or condescending. I ordered in June and have tried multiple avenues to get a shipping update from them and can't get any sort of response. I'm not asking for specifics, I just want to know from them roughly when it will ship and frankly, given this experience combined with the fact that I've read for a long time that their customer service is absolutely putrid, I don't know that I'll be doing business with them again. I was sooo happy I waited for the Mega Everdrive Pro instead of that ridiculously overpriced MegaSD and I would otherwise wait for krikzz to release a Saturn ODE, but I don't think he plans to get into the ODE market.

People pay $1,000 for ugly-ass smartphones all the time and they don't complain $200 for an ODE is nothing considering you get the play the entire Sega Saturn Library if you wanted to easily with this and no emulation inaccuracies

@@superbroly64DS How many people of, say, 10.000 people will buy a PS5 and how many will buy a MODE. People will by a PS5 in the millions total sales. The MODE will probably sell at best in the 1000's worldwide (and there is even a cheaper option available and way longer on the market that does largely the same).
And no, it's not a great device for a RETAILER as there are very few consumers buying these things. They are just expensive space fillers for a retailer, space that can be filled up with goods that sell more than one or two in a shop. For people that want to play dreamcast games or saturn games and have some 200 dollar laying around it's great (and don't mind dealing with Terraonions BS).
It's a product that targets a niche within a niche market. It's also why it's so expensive for what it is. That's why its an awful product for a retailer, because the target audience is miniscule and the chances of someone wanting to buy one from your given store is even smaller.
A retailer doesn't care how amazing a device is, he care about how many he can sell at a profit at minimal risk. And the MODE is not a product a retailer can sell at a profit without significant risk.

@@nattila7713 The Satiator has been making some serious progress, so much so that RetroRGB already got to test a prototype on his channel for it. If you absolutely have to have something for your Saturn NOW, then just buy the MODE. If you're patient and prefer a mod-free and non-intrusive solution that will perform exactly the same as the MODE, then wait for the Satiator. Personally, I'll wait as I'm also not fond of Terraonion's requirement of registering the MODE you buy. I've also heard their customer service has been pretty poor.

@@nattila7713 The Fenrir has had a good reputation for awhile, only problem is that they tend to be scarce. Other than that they're great. I guess my overall stance is if there is a plug and play solution that doesn't compromise on features then I'd go with that. I do that with my Gamecube by using an Action Replay and an SD to Gamecube memory adapter so I can run Swiss and GBI. On the flip side, my Xbox is going to get a chip installed someday since soft mods don't offer as much flexibility.

He's not going to show you where to pirate games in his video. That part is up to you.
There is the power supply unit that is compatible with both Saturn and Dreamcast but no one talks about swapping out the PSU everytime you want to change consoles.

Reason that device has everything is so u dont have to worry about compatibility. Not to switch it on the fly between consoles. How that going to make money. Just unsolder the male conector from the mother board and extend it and hot glue it to the top of the lid on the dreamcast and same for saturn. U won't have to worry about 3d prints or touching power supply's and swaping on the fly is easy.
