Ridley from aliens was never a “girl boss” like most female characters are made to be nowadays. If any modern female character was put in Ridley’s scenario at the end of the movie would have instantly become a badass who would be better with a gun then any of the highly trained marines were. Dumbing it down to “why do you care about children’s movies and entertainment” is a stupid argument because I can ask the same thing back because why do companies like Disney and the people who support crap like this care so much to race swap characters in the first place? How almost every modern western female in game model looks uglier the the *real* mocap actresses they use( the males to nobodies surprise are all one to one to their mocap actors unlike the woman) or are massive downgrades from past iterations of the character ( horizon forbidden west, mk1, spider man 2). but eastern in game models are always one to one or better than the mocap actors (death stranding, stellar blade, resident evil 4 remake)
How can you say race swapping is stupid but think it’s stupid for people to get mad at the little mermaid? If it’s literally just because it’s “children’s entertainment” then what exactly is your line if there is one for what level of progressive ideology is allowed? Characters like venture are stupid and will always be made fun of because we all know that blizzard has a literal diversity chart they use so we know every character they churn out is hand crafted to check boxes. Christians broadly don’t demand you follow their faith and beliefs or else face punishment but we see in a ton of places outside the u.s. that “misgendering” can literally put you in jail and people love talking about how “hate speech” is a problem and we all know who’s definition of “hate speech” is going to be followed.

I think "woke" is a lazy way for people to dismiss or critic something. If you dislike something surely you can find a smarter way to describe why or at least be mature about it.

a great example of this is JK rowling being eaten alive on social media for "transphobic remarks" despite literally never saying anything about limiting the civil liberties of those groups. she was hated basically for not going with what was popular at the time and standing up for her true values of actual feminism and protecting womens spaces for privacy, and in some cases safety.
People call fallout (the show) woke not because of any female leads (from what I've gathered), it's because it feels like half it's runtime it is preaching how capitalism is bad, which could be an okay message, if the figureheads to show us that weren't completely idiotic. "There's a lot of money to be made with the end of the world" (paraphrasing here), that line makes no god damn sense.
Not to mention they were hyping moldaver and communism during the pre-war flashbacks and gave no reasoning as to why her ideology is better. "I am not a communist, that's just a dirty word they use for those of us not insane" my ass. (again, paraphrasing)
And of course, I am not defending blind usage of the word "woke" but that has become an easy label for "progressive" things as you have pointed out in the first half of the video.
You also mentioned it has a same sex couple. Did I miss something? I watched the series twice and never once did I see or hear of any same sex couples.
If you are refering to Moldaver and Lucy's mom, I'll tell you, that is not a thing. The series never said it and neither have the showrunners. It is an internet rumour, though, I can see it being truem given how quickly big companies are to slap that LGBT label on anything in hopes of luring in money from "progressives" and the LGBT.
The gay couple was a reference to Fallout 2.
And I never saw Communism portrayed as the “better” ideal in the show just that it was different. Not that capitalism is bad either but that extreme unchecked capitalism is. “A lot of money in the end of the world” of course they can’t make money after, but if they have all the cash leading up to the end, they will have the most power going in to and after the apocalypse. Which is true for figures like Mr House.

honestly if anything is going to make progressive ideals seem horrid is the modern tendency to shove them into anything that they can. i love politics in movies but it has to be done well, and its especially important to show complexity and grey areas in politics or else it looks like thinly veiled propoganda (which in the modern day it probably is most of the time).
for instance, i will always love the first black panther movie because it genuinely tried to have a message against opposite extremes. tachalla rages against his ancestors in the flashbacks scenes for being too cautious to take a stand against the injustice in the world, while killmonger is the antagonist because he takes the need for change too violently and becomes no better than the people he claims to fight against. killmonger was an honestly good critique of the violence and brutality of the black panther movement in the 1960s. it was an actually good message despite its obviously progressive political undertones. the same cannot be said for the sequel to black panther unfortunately.

I don’t think there anything wrong with that, I partake in the enjoyment of the female figure myself; but when it’s used as a retraction from a piece of media it’s weird to me, and I think people who say the Fallout show was bad because Lucy wasn’t so overly sexualized for example, are stupid.
Also a totally different thing between Aloy who is a character and Lucy who was a real actress. Although I don’t get the Aloy slander either I enjoy her design a lot.
@@Buster-McTunder yea, but I'm aloy pointing out as example of her having better budgets in order for the player to like her. aloy is debatable not a good character to the player. Not many of us are outcast and shunned from society, so might be able to emphasize for her, but it is hard to relate to her. And when she brought back, she acts like she better than everyone because never had community to support when it's like...she not only unrelatable, she's unlikeable, and since they threw those 2 things out, at least give me something to look at

Pretty much every complaint I saw about the show were alleging that the show retconned the non Bethesda fallout games (I dont know enough about fallout lore to say wether this is true or not).
Also, no one complained about aloy's look, at least not directly. The complaints were about how worse her look got from the first to the second game and the addition of pointless details that were just off-putting (like giving her facial hair)

Honestly the biggest issue really is that the well got poisoned by corporate interests making horrendous characters in recent history that checked specific boxes for mass marketing purposes, so to the average consumer it becomes an immediate red flag when there is a character of a specific background getting representation, ie companies getting progressive for a quick buck making cheaply produced characters that causes pattern recognition to go down
The problem with the little mermaid isn't about that one movie, or a the fact it's a childrens movie. It's that companies are activley blackwashing white chracters to make more money. And more importantly that the left doesn't care. Try making a movie about marin luther king and have him played by Chris Pratt. The left would be all over that shit. But making cleopatra black although she's egyptian and egyptians aren't even black and the left just sits idly by, not giving a shit.
"Woke" just means people who can't handle critsism, who do things not because they are morally right, but because they are cool right now. Like Queers for Palestine, for example. They're supporting a "country" (debatable), that would literally stone them to death if they even visited. That's like "Jews for the third Reich". It just doesn't make sense. I dont care if you make something new and the characters are trans or gay or whatever, I'll just not buy it. I was once apart of the movement that said “X is woke or Y is woke.” Then a video I watched talking about how woke cinema doesn’t exist and that there’s only good and bad cinema, and that video thankfully brought me out of that hell hole, and made me realise there were problems with me that I needed to fix. But weren't ppl being banned from the helldivers discord for asking for any kind of real world political thing, whether it be Maga or lgbt, things like that would divide the community when we're supposed to fight for one flag, super earth. Yes, the game is political satire, but it is a fictional political system and world, ppl have a problem when real world stuff gets into the thing they do to escape from reality.

Well, like...people are tired of others pushing an agenda instead of having any meaningful message. The fall out games had some type broader message about how war never changes, and each title having a different meaning. 76 has ideas of how the world is so great, and then opening the vault and realizing we lost it all. A sign of grief.
New Vegas is about the ideas is the old way better than new and maybe humans were never meant to get this far.
What does the show talk about? Muh captlism, and the rules of wasteland are different than the vault. And never really taking itself actually serious, and because it doesn't have serious message, people are force to ask what the producers wanted, and if it's their to busy trying make a diverse, then worried about pushing agenda. They know it matters, it why they put it there.

I mean its pretty clear that Fallout is a pastiche of 1950s America in a retro-Futureistic setting. Clearly a playing on the Capitalist vs. Communist ideals at the time. And how all an all such clashed lead to a mutual destruction, ergo the name..."Fallout".
By it's very nature the franchise is overtly political, by the Meer fact your playing in a post apocalyptic wasteland caused by Cold War era politics in a hypothetical future....

Yep. The politics in Helldivers only work in its own world. Adding a rainbow cape or even a US flag cape would stand out too much. Plus, I highly doubt the government of Super Earth would be ok with any kind of movement like the lgbt people. That is a government that wants COMPLETE control over its citizens lives and any deviation would be put down before it could become a problem. "Free thinkers" would be shunned at best and executed at worst. We are not playing the good guys in Helldivers.

Baldurs Gate 3 is a game that is LOADED with "Woke" ideology, but none of it prohibits the game from being great.
I'm typically "Anti-Woke", but when dealing with Fiction I'm willing to be more open-minded about it because the whole point of Fiction is that you set the rules of the world you want to create.
Do you want everyone in the village to have different skin tones despite it making absolutely no sense because of the nature of different skin tones? Go ahead.
Want your entire camp party to be a bunch of insatiably horny, alcoholic pansexuals? Sure, why not.
Want every different race to get along in perfect harmony even if that sort of idealism doesn't work in real life? Whatever floats your boat.
None of these stop Baldurs Gate from being a great game, because B.G. was made with quality in mind first and ideology comes second to that. Its prevalent in the game if you care enough to notice, but it doesn't detract from the really good worldbuilding, character writing, the amazing performances, or any of its other great game attributes.
Where "Woke" goes wrong in Fiction is when people treat the thing in question as if its good purely on the basis that it has X, Y, and Z thing as a part of it.
The Acolyte isn't a good TV show just because there are lesbians in it.
Rings of Power isn't a good TV show because there's a black elf in it.
Having little trinkets of "Woke" like that doesn't absolve your art from being scrutinized and you shouldn't get to mudsling at a hypothetical strawman just to deflect genuine critique.
If what you made is of poor objective quality then it should be called out for it and the Woke that's in it is of no consequence or relevance to the criticism.

I don’t get this, the term,”woke” is a simple way of saying that leftist or extreme leftist ideologies, are taking over, whatever movie, show or industry, that the term is applied too, it’s really simple, and of course there’s a problem with that, it’s not right to shove your ideology down everyone’s throats, fiction is fiction and it should be kept that way, for an example I love warhammer the way it is in the lore, but warhammer is not a very left leaning idea, in fact it’s the complete opposite the universe of 40K is extremely right leaning, and there’s nothing wrong with that, to each their own, some people like 40K while others prefer Star Wars or marvel, diverse fiction is good so that everyone feels they have something they connect with, but if you simply corrupt and change everything to fit the more leftist ideologies then the people on the right will have nothing to watch and enjoy, without being extremely irritated, I personally don’t see any issue with the term woke being used, whether it has negative or positive connotations, it’s just another way for people to describe something so that they can get their point across, regardless if you have seen the shift in marvel (she hulk, Loki, Thor L&t, ms marvel, Hawkeye, the falcon and the winter soldier, etc), Star Wars ( everything after the prequels) and movies and shows in general, have tried to be representative of left leaning ideology, Disney is a good example, with its depiction of Disney classics, the new Snow White ( the cutting out of the prince, why because a girl don’t need a man😂), Barbie, etc etc etc, you get the point, I’m praying that warhammer can just be what it is, but that doesn’t seem like a reality that will come to fruition, I was hearing rumours about how in the possible Amazon show, they wanted 50/50 split with females and males, 50% diverse cast, and something like 3 LGBTQ people like gay people or something else 😂, it’s just silly and childish follow the lore, let the characters be themselves and keep their designs, to have such quotas is just weird and wrong

I think there's a difference between something being meaningfully woke, and something simply pandering to get an audience invested. There's plenty of stories that are progressive, or conservative, but so shallow in their intention that they don't really say anything worth hearing.

The anti-SJW crowd at the time soon began to associate the term "woke" with SJWs, who at the time were an overbearing bunch of pearl clutching cry-bullies who exploited genuine social causes and cultural issues to make themselves look good and win petty arguments without actually helping anything at all.
When Hollywood films and companies started pandering to these types of "SJW causes", some saw a loss in profits since their core audience decided they weren't interested, and right wingers coined the term "get woke go broke". From there the term became its own thing.
Nowadays, it feels that term has lost any meaning, and honestly i get annoyed hearing it. "Woke this, woke that", its the same as other terminology that has been rendered into meaningless buzzwords to slander and call names by this point, even if theres valid criticism to be made.

At first, I didn't agree because it seemed skewed a specific direction and had some specific viewpoints I didn't agree with, but sticking to it, I agree wholeheartedly with the video. I think some of my disagreements come mostly from the perspective being approached on them. Both sides are bad in their extremes. Extremes are bad across the board. The rest is nuance. Love the video. Good work! It's all about the way inclusivity and adjacent "woke" ideas are used.
Probably gonna get buried but I think you’re wrong on the right’s misunderstanding of Helldivers, fascism debate aside. The right nowadays is more likely to shake their fist at Israel and green regulations for Iraq than to blindly agree with it. They came to the position that forever wars bad and if they didn’t Trump wouldn’t have started the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Ultimately I think it helps your point though that they overlook politics they like such as with Helldivers
Not really, it refers to a distinct left wing chauvinism. In the context of pop culture we have repeatedly seen a consistent effort to “improve” certain IP’s by alienating and demonising the core fanbase, retconning the canon and demeaning certain characters in an attempt to build others up.
The ability of these writers is also extremely questionable given how often the themes and messages they inject are muddled (sometimes to the point of contradicting themselves), the complete lack of understanding of the issues they are attempting to represent (pointing to a cultural and political understanding of toddlers) and unrepentant bigotry they have towards certain demographics (displayed in the treatment of characters).
The term might be overused but given how prevalent this chauvinism is within certain industries, the damage it has done to certain brands and fanbases and especially with the amount of blatant gaslighting there is surrounding it. I think the hypersensitivity we see with usage of that term is both inevitable and understandable.
Frankly whinging as if the “anti-woke” are the problem is beyond missing the point. They are not the ones destroying these franchises, they are not the ones destroying the credibility of media and they are not really the ones being extremely divisive. At the end of the day the only people i see saying certain fanbases are problematic/irrelevant based on nothing but immutable characteristics are the “woke”. At this point I think complaining about the far right is about as relevant as complaining about horse manure on city streets, to me it’s a sign of lazy and extremely outdated politics.

Cool video. A lot of good points and some that I disagree with. The only thing I'd call an outright error is that woke is no longer a term used seriously on the left and hasn't been for some time. We do use the term "anti-woke" to refer to people who specifically call out things as being "woke" but we don't use the base word as a real, defining thing. Also, maybe stop using the r-word; it's just a bit needless as well as offensive to people you're not even trying to offend. What really does bother me is some of the commenters here. So many comments left by people who embody the very problem this video is calling out.

I remember awhile back there was a controversy over an indi show called helluva boss (shocker i know) but this one was impressively moronic, because the whole argument was about a child that appeared for not even a full minute who was at the very least implied to be deaf, there was no deep speech about disabilities heck the furthest they got to even acknowledging it is that they communicate thru sign language, they weren't a main character, the character is purely there to act as a narrative tool which relates to the actual main character of the episode, and yet somehow people somehow managed to look at all of this and called it "forced diversity"

I used to be someone "outraged" by woke this & that I would moan with others & to be honest it was just a waste of time. I distanced myself from these people because I got fed up not only with the moaning but also the response if you liked a genre or franchise they didn't like, I think as much as the internet & social media has changed life for a positive it has also created a negative side & the only winners are the ones making money off of the drama so really it should just come down to if you like it great, If you don't then don't bother with it, on a side note I am really enjoying the Fallout tv show & just to ruffle some feathers.....I love Starfield.

X men 97 was never woke, its just diversity done RIGHT. Morph's orientation and gender is NEVER brought up in the show. You'd have to actually look it up. They don't make his gender or preference the highlight of his character, they treat him like an actual human being. The whole "January 6th" courtroom storm with X-Cutioner I didn't see any correlation because massive fights like that are used in X Men plots a ton. Even the original series had one. Magneto's speech to the politicians people said was woke...but that's magneto's character and always has been since his debut.

I’m a republican and I’m soooo tired of people labeling everything I like “wOkE” because they added a character of a different gender. I remember in stellar blade they changed an outfit to show slightly less cleavage to unrelated reasons that the cleavage itself and someone who had previously praised stellar blade immediately denounced it as “wOkE” and “bEiNg CeNsOrEd”. All so stupid, or when added female custodians to Warhammer and now freaks on the internet denounce anything Warhammer and say they’re just mad about them changing it to always be that way and not respecting the lore when really they just don’t like strong women in media. Out here in the real world my good friend plays custodians and after he learned of this whenever he makes new models me makes a point to have a couple of them be explicitly female, because it’s interesting character building and adds variety, not because he’s woke.
