  • I built a Surly Grappler with 29” wheels and a 2x drive train with bar end shifters. This ride will be my gravel and Bikepacking rig. I have completed a few rides and this is the first true test on more technical single track. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions or thoughts about the bike or build. Thanks to Campfire Cycling in Tucson, Arizona for their help in designing the drivetrain and wheel build.

Great to see this video, I am getting this bike custom built with almost identical gearing and 29er wheels so nice to see it is capable.
I am also considering bar end shifters though shop advises against them so interesting to see what you were able to do with them on.

Thanks for writing. I wanted to really make the bike reliable for remote riding so bar end shifters and mechanical disk brakes make sense to me. I’ve had broken “Brifter” cables on my road bike that trained mechanics had trouble replacing. Plus, bar end are kinda cool I think😁

    All terrain adventure wheels 😲
I've been pretty happy with my e13 cassettes. Think we got 566% range. I know they are making gravel stuff too. Check in out

I have that same hat from in your garage and I’ve never seen another, shame they don’t make them anymore.
Also love that you took the bike to sycamore. I love sycamore but that would be rough on a gravel bike.

Thanks, the. Bike did great. It was a bit rough coming off some of those big boulders without front suspension, but kinda a fun challenge.
