Great video on the joys of urban/old industrial gravel riding. Shows the spirit of adventure does not only reside in woodlands or gravel roads. Videos like this seem to be the best way to highlight any city.
Some people might say or think the rubbish and junk is sad and ugly out in nature, but in those places it’s oddly beautiful. I know that’s not right or even the best description but it’s kinda cool and shows how humans affect their environment.
Tim, wonderful Pgh ride. I recognized most of the locations but many of the pathways were new to me. You even did part of the Duck Hollow trail. I saw that you rode along the original wall to the Allegheny Arsenal and ended up at the historic Allegheny Cemetery. The Allegheny Arsenal was our nations largest arsenal and served from the war of 1812 through WWI. On 9/17/1862 there was a huge explosion at the arsenal killing 78 people mostly teenage girls who were employees. A spark ignited some black powder that exploded three buidings and killed the workers reporting that day for thier pay. Their body parts are burried in a mass grave in the Allegheny Cemetery. Composer Stephen Foster is also burried at the cemetery. The land for the cemetery was sold to the U.S. Government by Foster’s father.
A bit off topic but just wanted to say thanks for the Velo Orange Granola bar references. I put one on Saturday due to some wrist and neck pain. I think its going to really help me, and changing a handle bar is about as easy as lubing your chain.
Worked a little in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh around 2005, first time I drank Yuengling and Troegenator. Had some great pizza and sandwiches. Thanks for a great video!
Wow that has such a nice post industrial wasteland vibe. Those are absolutely the most fun places to explore. Fun trip ! Pittsburgh was super impressive and I need to go back and explore on bike someday.
Nice. Never been to Pittsburgh. I'd like to go. That overgrown grassy hillside looked rad. I seen a lot of photogenic places, buildings in there. I for some reason love rust. Probably would need a whole weekend + to really explore.
wow, this makes me want to join your discord. looks like the perfect route only a local would know. pittsburgh really seems like one of the coolest american cities.
Sweet video again. Neat route. I run 28-30 psi in 43mm gravel kings as my tubeless setup. I'd be interested in the photos on the abandoned rail bridge.
This is 100% a certain part of reality right now. 😎 ….and the best kinda place to ride bikes. (Boston was fun too - I just didn’t have a local to show me around)
I am usually up in PA in September but too much happening this year that I didn’t make it. I would have absolutely been up for that ride in my old stomping grounds out east. I grew up in the Braddock area during much better times and watched its decline. Looked like a super fun ride I sure wouldn’t want to do myself 😳. Great video as always. My brother was at the Outlaws concert too.
Golly, I wish I had a friend like you around Charlotte! Someone who wants to ride a bike all the time. If you are ever in Charlotte, and you bring a bike, I would love to ride with you. I don’t do roads here, but the sugar creek trail 35 miles round trip is not bad, nice breweries in Charlotte. 👍👍🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴
I spent a week working there but we were staying at a freeway stop hotel outside the city. I had no chance to ride even a city bike because of that. I had time to explore the city on foot a bit though and through the work - very cool place. Not sure if I will get back but would love to explore with a local - best way to see a place. FYI - I made all my bike friends who want to ride by turning up to bike shops and bike events. Almost none of the friends in these vids did I know before bikes. Building bike communities takes a little bit of work or maybe stepping outside of your comfort zone but it is worth it!
HOW MANY PSI IN THAT TREK 420?!?! XD My little bro lives in Pittsburgh. He's not much of a cyclist, but he'll do a weekly ride to a pop up brewery that's on one of the rivers and usually sends us photos of the evening shots. Pittsburgh's a pretty cool place.
Great images of Pittsburg. Thanks for sharing. Just got back from doing parts of the G to G trail. Worth checking out. Make sure to stop at Cowbell Brewery. Do the river crossing in Auburn instead of bypass.
Tim, how much road debris do you pick up in your tires, riding “Industrial Gravel”. I think it’s cool that you guys rides through the abandoned factories. My good is from Akron as well, I name places you ride to him all the time, he thinks it’s fantastic. He moved from there decades ago.
I always talk about doing that - even with my close friends who are obligated to put up with me. But when we are out having fun I just want to have fun…. Thus the POV with voiceover style. We just riding bikes!
Ride Ride Ride T.W and gang,,, I'm doing the Canadian Myra Canyon trail in British Columbia... A old old rail-way bed of smooth gravel. All along the Encirclement of the canyon, with two tunnels in 7 bridges, long spans. You'ed love it. Up along the ridges of the Canyon... ok so kool... Western Canada Old Fadded Goat Don...
Awesome! As I mentioned on your Stream, Peter Santorello is sort of like a modern day Charles Kuralt, he recently went into Pittsburg, and interviewed a lot of folks. Many were on meth. Very cool historical and social perspectives . Couple Q's: What is a "cut"? Also, how TF did you figure out that complex route? Or was that on, like, Ride W/GPS or Strava or whatever? Abandoned RR bridges???!!! , OMG. I'm starting to grok upon Erin's bike, a sleek gravel suspension fork. That doesn't look like my doofey 90's Rock Shox. WANT. I must call Surly. I have their regular fork on my heavy mule and it's fucking awesome. I just got a nice, mysterious, Argentinian steel road frame , for free . I will put my 27" wheels on that with the brand new Panaracers in good old 27 X 1 1/4. Phil wood hub in the back, that one of my lovely ride fans gave me years ago. So not a gravel bike , this one's gonna be really blingy . Oh and.... why do hipsters wear Campagnolo hats while drinking bougey craft IPA's while ironically, talking full bore anarchy? There should be a law against that. Stay tuned for my new video tutorial "How to irritate Tim FitzWater" . (Get him to almost full boil, then dodge when he throws his beer at you. )
If you look for meth addicts, you'll find meth addicts. There's lots of other angles of Pittsburgh that are incredible. We do a lot of exploring and linking roads or paths or 'cuts'. A lot of us in the riding circles swap info and share spots and take each other to areas to explore. The more you ride the more you get to explore. Hope any of that helps! Cheers.
@@christopherpollack2654 I ride daily , roadie since '72. Have never heard the term "cut" used in cycling. Please 'splain. I was obviously being satirical on Santarello . But let's be clear, meth etc. IS a thing. You have to actually watch his videos , they are quite good. Some depresso, but some hope.. God Bless. So the leader of that ride is a Pittsburg local? Yes - a local was taking us on a route he planned for this - "greatest hits" as his buddy with the flat we ran into called it. You don't need to be someone who rides bikes to know what a "cut" is .....I always thought.....
"We used our feet to get coffee" You can actually do that, wow, who knew? Great route, you have to imagine me pronouncing that "root" but anyway thanks for making the effort.
Do these Pionir10 dudes know you feature their music so much, might get most of their listen thru your videos? And I know it free to use, more like this is kinda what is net is for, people around the world coming together like this, u know....
Not that I'm aware of. I found them at the link - the Free Music Archive. Some of their songs are right-protected and some aren't. If they ever change that they will start to get the ad revenue from these videos I use them in.
Gotta be honest...you lost me immediately by shooting video in the car. It kills me when I see cyclists recording video/distracted driving. We are constantly complaining about how careless drivers are, and how dangerous the roads are then get right into a car and do the same thing and perpetuate the madness! Please consider giving your driving 100% of your focus 🙏
Have you ever used a GoPro? You literally push one tactile button and point it forward. Changing a radio station or looking at my map app is far more distracting than this. I’m not looking at the GoPro screen at all when I’m driving. (Or really ever for that matter) I totally understand your concern - but it’s misplaced with the what I’m doing here.
Such a different perspective on riding. Very enjoyable to see good people having fun riding.
Thanks for producing and sharing such an excellent urban adventure. The music is amazing and spot on!
Yeah! It was such a blast - cheers!
Concur.
Viva La Rustbelt! Areas that used to be shunned are becoming the cool places to go. The music in this video was just perfect. Bravo!
Nice! Didn’t actually know I was going to be in a video when I showed up to the ride. It was a great time!

Glad you made it out - so much fun!

Awesome route. Great music.
Thanks!
This looks super rad! There is nothing but a crap ton of woods and gravel where I live in PA
Beautiful late summer light.
Kinda cool to see all my usual spots depicted in your vid
Some people might say or think the rubbish and junk is sad and ugly out in nature, but in those places it’s oddly beautiful. I know that’s not right or even the best description but it’s kinda cool and shows how humans affect their environment.
The history, the changes, the remnants are all interesting to me.
La Gourmadine is divine.
Thanks for hanging and visiting! Always a blast.
So much fun riding - and so much good beer and food too!
Top Industrial GravGrav! Thnx 😊
So fun out there!
I never thought about going to Pittsburgh before watching this video, but it looks like a good time.
Pitt is great even if you aren't riding like this. Food, drinks, views etc.

Perfect music for this video! You just put Pitt on my bike list- thanks

Great video, Tim! Pittsburgh by bike is amazing. So glad you appreciate it as much as I do. Love my city!
Yes!! These to me are the best rides. Urban slash dirt to gravel. Fixing to find some routes around here New Orleans.

Awesome ride. Really joyed it. I would have to agree, from your video it looks like a great place to ride. Thanks for sharing Tim.
Abandoned road climb looked sweet 👍

Urban Gravel.. Never heard that term before, now I know exactly what that means. We do not have that here in my world.
Sitting here, waiting for the front wheel build so i can ride stuff like this on the weekend.

Great video. Thank you. On this ride or ones like it. Have you had any confrontation ? Stay safe and God bless.

Bloomfield!
Love all these parts of PGH, great video
Yeah - we stayed on the "Lawrenceville Side of Bloomfield" as my girlfriend described the Air BnB to me and I in turn described it to Chris.
It would be cool to see a rundown of the different bike setups when you do these videos. Always curious what other people are running.
