In August of 2023 we set out to ride the Oregon Back Country Discovery Route from south to north. We left Fields Station and set out into section #1. It had rained the two previous nights. As was well until we set out through the Hart Mountain Bypass as we had been told the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge was closed which we later were told it was indeed open. The bypass was a muddy mess...

Sweetwater loop was no joke we just made our video on my channel
Who sings that song "I don't want to lose you?"
really great video....got a great feel for the sections and enjoyed the music and debriefs after the sections.....@stanforadventture
Nice vid to watch. Just rode that area two weeks ago from my house. th-cam.com/video/maOhHhX-hnw/w-d-xo.html Rode through Truckee to Bowman Lake and others three weeks ago. Cant ride for a few weeks so enjoying riding watching your vid. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your BDR adventure. I will be getting some late September. I hope to have good weather.
I’ve driven my ram 2500 across rush creek several times it can get deeper than it really looks L O L good job
Beautiful video, I’ve ridden Touring bikes all over the western US Mexico and Canada. I just don’t think I have the skill set to do a trail like that on a dirtbike lol I’ll stick with a Jeep :-)
right on fred!
Good job! That descent from Mt Patterson looked chunky.
Awesome Fred !!
I followed your entire series for this trip. So many elements of the videos I enjoyed. Great ride. Congratulations
Without camping. What’s your recommendation for biking to Tijuana? From downtown San Diego?
I’ve got a D Sled in South America and ride primarily dirt roads and farm roads/paths. Thus far, it’s only needed fuel and oil. Have you had any maintenance issues?
If it possible may i join with you
pretty cool fred!!!!
Thanks Nick
Epic
Hey Devin. I have to admit, suspension would have been smart
That mud looks rough. What month were you there?
August. There had just been a couple nights of rain so it surprised us
@@parrsplace that looks like palos verdes after rain....mud sticks to tires...imposs to ride and walk....
@@spawnrcandbikes it’s interesting, not all mud is the same. Catalina had a lot of clay in it I think
🙌🏻
Completely enjoy your series. Thank you.
Thanks so much Daryl
What time of year was this?
August
What did you end up as far as miles, and days out? Did you motel it at all
We rode the entire BDR and to and from LA. We camp as much as possible weather permitting, but enjoy motels as well.
Great to see this video, I am getting this bike custom built with almost identical gearing and 29er wheels so nice to see it is capable. I am also considering bar end shifters though shop advises against them so interesting to see what you were able to do with them on.
Thanks for writing. I wanted to really make the bike reliable for remote riding so bar end shifters and mechanical disk brakes make sense to me. I’ve had broken “Brifter” cables on my road bike that trained mechanics had trouble replacing. Plus, bar end are kinda cool I think😁
Excellent 🎉🎉
Thanks, Colorado is amazing
You should mic up Evan so he could give a historical rundown of the cabins and mines. He’s a wealth of knowledge about history.
Right you are Marty, I learn so much from him
How many miles did you have on your sled when the clutch went out? Sheared rear shock bolt, clutch, any other breakage? I have the same bike, 2018
Only about 10k. The BDR’s have been tough on it and the mud that first day was too much for it. My novice skills may have also contributed 😁
@@parrsplace Hey thanks for the reply. I have 7500 on mine and was curious. I have been reading in some forums that if the clutch isn't adjusted properly (2-3mm of free play at the lever) they will wear out super fast.
Thanks. I’m more cognizant of that now. These BackCountry Discovery Route are tough on the Sled, but I really love it and have been impressed by how capable and agile it is off road
Some of that mud looked brutal as I know how sticky that desert mud can get. Seemed like you did great out there! 🤙
Nice video, looks like you had a fun trip.
Thanks, it was amazing. I would love to do it again down the road
All terrain adventure wheels 😲 I've been pretty happy with my e13 cassettes. Think we got 566% range. I know they are making gravel stuff too. Check in out
Thanks Devin, I’ll check it out
I have that same hat from in your garage and I’ve never seen another, shame they don’t make them anymore. Also love that you took the bike to sycamore. I love sycamore but that would be rough on a gravel bike.
Thanks, the. Bike did great. It was a bit rough coming off some of those big boulders without front suspension, but kinda a fun challenge.
That bypass wasn't much fun in the dry, wet it would have been a nightmare. Nicely done, section 3 and 5 were probably my favorites.
Ya, it was tough, but I got a new clutch out of it🤣
The truth hurts! But yep good to carry a tow strap, if especially if you are a poor sucker like me and own a KTM, and a Lambretta, and an MG, and a Jeep. BYOTS
Nice video! What time of the year did you go?
August, first two weeks
Been there a few times, never found tecate place, do you have the coordinates?
Sorry, no, but I’m sure you can google it. A friend knew where is was. It’s a haul out there and the sand hill getting up and over was a real challenge for me
@@parrsplace thanks for the reply, I’ve tried google and no luck, n,s,e or west from Afton campground?
@@mikebaker2694 Ill see if I can get the coordinates from my friend
@@parrsplace that would great thank you

Looked like a fun ride. I do like moto camping with you guys 2-3days, like when we all went to Death Valley a couple yrs ago. Nice job on the video.
Thanks brother
nice job getting up the hill!
Thanks. I wasn’t pretty, but I made it😁
Nicely done!! The quality of your videos just keep getting better and better!! Thanks for sharing !!
Thanks Chad, I appreciate it. Any big trip plans for you in 2024. I want to do the WABDR and have a friend doing the divide route on a bicycle and am intrigued by that. So many possibilities, life is good.
I couldn’t hang with you guys anymore even if I wanted to.
I’m sure you could
I always had wanted to go to the Alvord Mine. It looks like your riding has come along way you're killing that sand these days!
Thanks, but it almost killed me🤣 I was done at the end of day 3.
Thank you for sharing! I’m in Riverside and just purchased a 2018 Ducati Desert Sled and now going to start planning a nice trip here.
Congratulations Benny.
Is that campground actually in Mexico and how does riding on Camp Pendleton work?
Hi. No, it’s in California. An interesting area full of horse ranch’s and diverse plants and wildlife. To ride across Camp Pendleton these days you have to get a pass at the visitor center at the main (south) gate in Oceanside. They are good for a year and my friend had an expired pass that they glanced at and let us both through. Interstate 5 is the alternative.
I'm surprised you went with the seat post bag, after you said you like the low center of gravity on the yellow from bags. I too do not like a handle bare bag attached to the bars . I lowered my bar bag and set it on top of the front rack. I designed a quick release for the bag and designed it to face either forward or towards the cock pit.
Good point. I had light weight items in the seat post bag and it was centered compared to rear panniers which is a big difference.
Fred, if you’ve got time I would love to see a recap video on your trip, & a breakdown of what gear worked/didn’t work, and if you’ve got any advice for folks looking to ride. Do you have a link to your rides, also? Would be super helpful as I plan. Thanks 👍
Thanks for the comment and suggestion. That’s sounds like a good idea and will seriously consider. I certainly have thoughts after my two extended tour and have happy to share if you have any questions. My rides are on Strava so if you want to see the specific map info you could find me and them there. Strava/Fred Parr. Thanks again
Great vlog & congrats on the ride! Enjoyed watching your vlog. I had heard about the Pearlington bridge closure, but thanks to your vid, it seems like it’s passible on a bike. Hoping to do this potentially next year or sooner. Thanks much!
Great video. I'm going to be doing the Idaho bdr in 2 weeks. How many miles did you travel on a normal, no problem day? Thanks
Hey Eric, have a great trip. I would have to reflect back, but it’s a fast one. We usually try to do at least one section each day depending on we’re we decide to camp for the night, sights along the way, etc. My favorite part of the Idaho BDR was all the little towns so it’s fun to take time in them to eat, sightsee, etc. I would do Idaho again, fun riding, but so much of it has burned over the last 30 years. It is interesting to see the various stages of regrowth.
Your videos are impressive; your journeys are extraordinary! 🌍 How do you handle fatigue during those epic rides and ensure you're always at your physical best? Looking forward to insights!
Saying that I’m always at my physical best is generous. 😄 I train before the trip including the use of a sauna to acclimate to heat. Lots of breaks along the trail. I try to be mindful when I’m getting tired and fatigued and slow down a bit as that’s when crashes are more common. Strong communication between the team is also critical.
@@parrsplace thank you!
Love the vid. How was the temperature in sections 1 and 2? Im concerned about those in August….
Thanks, we had great weather except for the rain (mud). Not very hot at all
@@parrsplace you got lucky, I was out there early July and it was high 90's every day until I could get into Section 4.
I'm kinda shocked they took a pan America. That bike is way too heavy for this.
It is a heavy bike for sure, but to each their own. When you do a 3000+ mile ride there are no perfect bike for everything. I’m on the Ducati and I like it
Ahhh wow 3k trip now I know why he took it.
Everything is a trade off it seems😃
As a beginner with a Honda 250 Rally and having never done a BDR would you say your “bigger than mine” bikes were an asset or a liability? I live in Ohio…wish I were closer to the Western BDRs. Thank you for your video!
Thanks for watching. The second video will be out soon. The 250 Rally would certainly be a blast, but carrying everything you need a lots of pavement would be a challenge. There are no perfect bikes🤣
Awesome video man
Thanks , I appreciate it
Enjoyed joining you guys.
Thanks so much, the second half which includes a new clutch on my Ducati 😫 will be out soon
My group of 3 (KTM 690, 2x DR650s) will be doing this starting around Aug 1. Thanks for recording/editing/posting, nice perspective. I got worried seeing the camp setup with the thunderstorm approaching, but glad it turned out OK. Ducati looked like it did very well!
Thanks, have a great trip. I hope the weather is good for you. The WOBDR is a good one. Your bikes are great for it. I started with a KLR and loved it in the dirt, but tired of the pavement to and from. We’re leaving Aug 1st for the OR and WA BDR’s back to back. Cheers
Wow! I’m retired from the Lubbock PD. I would not have worked anywhere else! There are typical problems there but the citizens are very supportive and we tried to earn their trust. Hope we did. Anyway stumbled on your videos and enjoying them. Take care!
Thanks Bryan, I enjoyed Lubbock and the people I came across. I’m a retired Firefighter and have many Cop friends. I love the job but retirement is a good thing, no? 😁 I hope your enjoying it
Yes! Been retired since 13. Started riding in 14 but can’t do those long rides, old injuries. 25-50 and I’m good. Take care brother! And thanks for your service!
