(This is the finished product).
OH MY GOSH this took forever! We started this animatic back in DECEMBER!!! Of course it got put off due to class and a bunch of other stuff. It was sitting on our computer mostly done for a while now, so we decided to finish it off to give us more time to work on the upcoming 5th Monte Cristo animatic (and like I mentioned on the previous video, we do not know when it will be finished, so don't ask).
This animatic isn't up to the standards that we had wanted, but we'd spent enough time on it already and just wanted it done. So it doesn't have shading or detailed backgrounds, but it still looks good (right??). Hope you enjoy :)

Because we were testing out the style and because we both like the black and white look, like in old movies.
-Is it going to be finished/animated?
No, we only make animatics because that is what we are interested in, not animations.

It's just a random villain revenge plot created to work with the song.

All Hail Jim Cummings he also did the last bit of be prepared cause the voice actor for scar couldn't hit the notes needed,
It's much better than the higher pitched one they gave him in the show that doesn't match his earlier appearances. Early on he sounded super growly and dark. Now suddenly in season 9, his laugh sounds like a high-pitched horse whinny and the higher tone just doesn't fit him at ALL. He sounds like he's whining all the time.

It's not far from his original voice, just a bit less raspy and low, so it makes sense that it fits him.
Watching this made me realize something. There needs to be more villain songs in MLP.

This has been mentioned a million times by now but I just find it fascinating that the fandom created this intimidating, yet strangely compelling personality for Sombra.
Yet when Hasbro decided to reuse the guy he's a one off throw away villain with the temperament of a petulant child.
Thats power of money. At least make him fun and not anoying as in sz 9.

Yeah, I absolutely hated the voice acting for Sombra when they finally brought him back in the fanale of mlp. I always saw him as more of a mature, quiet, and lone wolf character. In the show they made him out to be a self absorbed idiotic teenager.

The Windigos match the power of the background vocals way more than the beetles. Seriously, if beetles could sing, they would not have that much power in their voice.

Yeah, the only demons in it were the bat-ghost things in the glass jar Rasputin held. Everything else during the song was bugs that would seem more at home in a Don Bluth Movie. Actually, scratch that - due to the main characters being humans, and the only mane animal characters being Bartok and Pooka (who doesn't speak) I forgot he actually made this.

This works really well, and I must say, the style and direction give Sombra more of a personality than what little was seen of him in the show. After all, he was more or less just this trope:
Generic Doomsday Villain - A villain without coherent motivation, goals and plans, defined solely by the threat he poses.
I always figured his motivation was that he wanted his damn kingdom back.
The comics did elaborate on his character, but honestly, they ruin Sombra with Radiant Hope
The series finale will fix that and most likely make another character that's essentially a better Sombra if they do him properly(it's going to take effort to mess him up)

I come from the future. Said villain was Discord in disguise.
And this is why I wish we had more of a chrysalis type story with him. Though Chrysalis is a strong villain I found that she wasn’t to strong without her swarm. She also had multiple episodes so I would wish we got at least maybe one or two more episodes of him before the crystal empires first appearance like a thing where they solve problems without realizing he caused them or something those might show his power or like an episode where he is hinted at even like a mural of power. Or we could have gotten a flashback from that potion that Twilight drank during season 4 that showed his true power. Sombra was intensely underused especially now that we can see how strong he actually is in the final season. This would’ve made an epic final battle and it really suits Sombra. Honestly I love Sombra as a villain

I actually really like the contrast between the Wendigo snow and the crystal shadow magic at the end. The way they spun together to go after Twilight is extremely well done!

OMG it's the first time I saw this video and it was amazing ! This animatic was perfect with this song. I have the impression that was really a Sombra's song and the choice to use wendigos as minions was great ! Everything was fantastic and I don't know why I don't have seen this before. Great job !

Hey, I needed to come back and comment on this after all these years. This, right here? This was what started me on my path to becoming an animator. Seeing something like this - in what a real production would consider its roughest stages - made me realize at a very young age just how incredible the medium could be, and how it was all done with a real human touch. I remember watching this over and over again when it came out, marveling at the beauty of this fan work and the anticipation it could create. Thank you for piquing my interest and setting me down that path.

The windigos are more known than the umbrums(plus, they aren't too different in design. Though it feels as if each serves a master, the umbrums for Sombra and the windigos for essentially a better Sombra)

Out of curiosity, what is it about animatics that appeals over animation? Would animation be something you would consider if it was less time consuming, or is animatics simply your preference?
LoneManProductions Storyboards are actually my favourite thing to do, animatics are just storyboards with sound and honestly I have no patience for animating, I hate it. It's so tedious and repetitive, I lose interest very quickly when I try it.
Ink Potts Yeah, that makes sense. I try my hand at Source Filmmaker projects every so often and I get the same problems.
This is pretty great though, and there's enough movement that I can fill in the gaps any animation would provide.

You'd be surprised to learn that on the actual show, Sombra is probably the most generic mysterious villain in existence. I'm not joking, the few episodes where he's the center of the conflict, he only ever growls and laughs in an echoy distance, and everything that's established about him is in exposition and flashbacks by other characters. I can't even remember if he was ever beaten

So I saw this in a related video/recommended list, thought it looked cool, added it to my watch later. I finally come to watch it. It has already been liked, but I have absolutely _no freaking memory whatsoever_ of seeing this. Really amazing though!
Silhouette, first off all, that was truly amazing, the art was outstanding as always and Ghost Quill did a great job on the editing, it wouldn't have been the same without her!
Plus that song fits Sombra and his cannon so well! I don't know really know the story behing "The Count of Monte Christo", so I don't understand what role he takes, and I also don't like this animatic as much as the others, but maybe that'll change...

I think the song In the dark of the night is a great choice for the pony named Sombra.
Love this animatic! I've never heard this song before but I could swear I recognized that voice from Skyrim, turns out he voiced some npcs in Skyrim, cool piece of trivia there
Doesn't anyone else see how Sombra looks alot like Ganondorf in some scenes. He's like the Demon king but he has the potential to be worse than what he was with his list of abilities. If the show used his full potential and it wasn't a Pg rating, imagine how dark the show could've been. (Ganon vs Sombra who would win?)
As powerful as sombra is, Ganondorf has the triforce of power. It's been show that it prevents him from dying from anyone other than a bear of courage or wisdom.
Very nice. I always loved this song, however i never really liked the corresponding scene for it. Primarily down to the disconnect i get from the epic backing choir being a bunch of prancing bugs. You using Windegos is a vast improvement.
I have to admit i was slightly disappointed that you used Twilight instead of Cadence, but that is purely down to personal head-cannons. Even though its semi-cannon (based on the chapter book) that Cadence used to be a pegasus, I prefer to think of her as a descendant of Crystal Pony royalty. As such i thought she would have been a good substitute for Anastasia.

finalsight I'm actually going to agree with you because when I saw Twilight I was a bit confused and disappointed. Cadance took over the crystal empire in the end. While it is a very well made animatic, I think it would fit better with Cadance rather than Twilight(unless it isn't canon, of course).
But! What if this was based on Sombra getting the crystal heart instead of Cadence?

When Sombra finally got his return in the season 9 premier it was so disappointing, they could've done so much more
those are very dinamic poses over there included the perspective is pretty neat
Still come back to this every so often. Really makes Sombra seem a lot more threatening then in the show, and bringing back the Wendigos to team up with him was a cool move.
All Sombra needs is an evil laugh at the end
