I can’t believe this song wasn’t included in the stage musical! I mean, I know the supernatural elements were taken out, but . . . . Boy, would this have been AMAZING to see on stage! Missed missed missed opportunity!
I saw the musical and the movie, at first when I looked at the songs before I saw the musical, In the Dark of the Night wasn't there and I was so confused
I know, right!? Why TF did this song never make it into the musical? It's probably by far the most famous and popular one from the movie, arguably even moreso than Once Upon A December!
In the dark of the night I was tossing and turning And the nightmare I had was as bad as can be It scared me out of my wits! A corpse falling to bits! Then I opened my eyes and the nightmare was me! There's a reason the villains always have the best songs. Those minor harmonies give me chills. Not to mention Christopher Lloyd gave his all in this song. This song reminds me so much of Be Prepared, which is probably the best Disney villain song. No wonder this movie always gets confused for Disney; it has a very iconic villain song for Rasputin.
tristonanan Actually, Jim Cummings- the voice of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Pete, among others; sung this song, not Christopher Lloyd. Christopher Lloyd couldn't sing (seeing as his voice for Rasputin was raspy) so they had to get Jim Cummings on board to do a amazing impression of Christopher Lloyd.
No, that's Hellfire, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. However, now that Disney bought fox, Anastasia is now a Disney movie. Making this song, In the Dark of the Night, the best Disney villain song ever.
@@johnathanmonsen6567 Yeah. However, Jim Cummings only did the end of the song as Scar. It was only because Jeremy Irons (Scar’s original voice actor) BLEW OUT his voice when screaming “You won’t get a sniff without me!”, that Mr. Cummings took over to finish the song, which he is a legend! :)
My favorite part... Come my minions Rise for your master Let your evil shine Find her now Yes, fly ever faster In the dark of the night In the dark of the night In the dark of the night She'll be mine!
Honestly such a banger of a villain song. Power ballad vibes to it, and some really witty word play. "The end of the line" being the end of the line for Anya, and the end of the line for the Romanov family (yes mom is still alive but she isn't having kids anytime soon).
At 2:09 when he says he'll see her "crawl into place" you can hear a gunshot in the score. Also one at 1:30 "one girl got away". Makes this song so much darker...
I know!! I told my mom that once I realized how dark it is. I’m surprised she even let me and my sister watch this, but also it’s one of her favorite films, so I can’t blame her
if I had to guess what you mean, this was when Villains were straight up evil loving every second of it and didn't need to hid behind the facade they are good guys
Kevin Murphy Thank you for that assessment. Yes, indeed that's what I meant. You know they're evil, and that's who they are. AND THE VILLAIN SONGS was also what I was referring to. They have great boss ass songs that are so memorable and just fit them. They're morbid and excellent
Thats what makes a villain so great! Nowadays most villains in kids films (especially disney) are last minute reveals and because of that we never get the chance to see how menacing (and fun) they can be. If you had to choose between Love is an open door and Be Prepared which would you say is a better song song for a real villain.
Kevin Murphy I was literally just going to say that. Even "Mother knows best" can't compare to "Hellfire." But nowadays people are too sensitive and want to make things less evil. It's more about the surprise last minute saving than a whole movie of good versus the truly evil. Hans doesn't come close to The Evil Queen or Maleficent.. Those villains actually gave you the creeps
Dude, go look this guy up. His name is Jim Cummings. We practically owe him our childhood. He voice acted Pete from Goofy, Ed from Lion King, Tantor from Tarzan, Kaa from The Jungle Book. It's impossible to name them all.
The most amazing part of this song is that I know it's Jim Cummings singing it, yet he sounds so convincingly like Christopher Lloyd you'd SWEAR it was him singing.
Requiem Jim Cummings also sang some of the parts of “Be Prepared” from the Lion King, when Jeremy Irons couldn’t quite hit the higher notes. He’s got quite a voice
I agree with the Nostalgia Critic: I always imagine Rasputin being backed-up by a legion of evil skeletons. I really don't know why they went with bugs when hell is apparently MADE of bones just waiting to come to life dance the can-can!
If Fox ever decides to do a remake of this movie (Animated, *not* live action), maybe they should do that. Make Rasputin's layer filled with living skeletons and ghosts instead of bugs. And maybe they could also come up with a more refined reason for Rasputin to go after Anastasia? Maybe it could be because his body will eventually die out if his curse to kill the entire Romanov family isn't fulfilled? I don't know.
@@shinyneko8136 that would actually be a very good addition! I've only seen the movie recently, and tho I like Rasputin as a character, I think his villain motives are a little weak. But I also don't want him to play too much bigger of a role, as the movie is more focused on Anya's self identity than opposing a villain
If i remember correctly it was written somewhere that animating large amounts of Skeletons was deemed too difficult and would be too scary for the younger audiences so they decided to tone it down with bugs instead.
I wish they kept this song in the Broadway adaptation. It would have been so cool performed on a stage. They could’ve modified the lyrics to fit Gleb’s story.
Woooooowwwww, they couldn't be assed to change some lyrics to make literally the best song in the entire movie fit with the Broadway adaptation? This and Once Upon a December are literally the only two songs from the movie I remember or seek out to listen to by themselves.
I have a feeling that Bluth was told to lighten up the visuals, considering how frightening he can make sequences (like Charlie's vision of Hell in All Dogs go to Heaven or Land before Time), because the visuals to this song are just so bizarre. Bugs? Sure. But they're ridiculously cute and break the tone of the character and song completely. They're lavender and pink for goodness sake.
In the Dark of the Night actually is a good song to do parodies on. Speaking of which, here is a parody I came up with that is based on Sonic Forces and/or Sonic Forces Overclocked: I was once the most powerful being on Mobius, When Eggman betrayed me he made a mistake. The Phantom Ruby made each of them pay, But one little child got away! Little Rookie beware! Infinite's awake!

I was once the ghost hidden in the opera When Christeine betrayed me she made a mistake Now I'm hidden away One day I'll make each of them pay Christeine beware Your angel awaits
Matt Piavis He is actually making a new independent film. It’s a fully hand-drawn animated film based on Dragon’s Lair. I’m not sure when the release date is, but it’s still happening. I’m crossing my fingers it’s successful, given the lack of love for hand-drawn films nowdays.
+Pierre Begley I don't know what "lack of love" you're talking about; the old animated works are as beloved as ever. It's just easier (and faster) these days to render things via computer. That doesn't lessen the human creativity behind it, of course.
When I first heard this song in the movie, I knew it sounded familiar. After some digging, I finally found out that it was produced by Jim Steinman, most famous for writing many songs for Meat Loaf and composing a bunch of other songs in the ‘70s and ‘80s, such as “A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste”, “Bat out of Hell”, “Good Girls Go to Heaven, Bad Girls go Everywhere”, and “Nowhere Fast”. The layered instruments, particularly the piano, electric guitar, and vocal harmonies are unmistakable.
This is my favourite princess movie by far. I love the history, I love that they found a storyline that doesn’t rely on the romance and the princess doesn’t need saving, I love the beautiful dresses and the flashbacks, dreams etc I just love the way it makes me FEEL Best of all I love the soundtrack. It is THE best soundtrack for a princess movie I’ve ever heard. Beautiful songs from the protagonist AND the antagonist.
In my opinion, what fourth best villain song, love it so much. It really reveals so much about the character, while the animation is outdated, it's craziness and creepiness is evident. It's also a tune as well. Love it. This film is the embodiment of my childhood
This is one of my two favorite villain songs from (originally) non-Disney animated films. The other is "You're Playing with the Big Boys Now" from Prince of Egypt.
Fun fact: the girls sewed jewels into their dresses so it was harder for the girls to die easily. Those girls didn’t deserve to die. Rest In Peace: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia ( OTMA)
Do you know why the Romanoffs actually died? It was because the people of Russia were actually starving while the royal family and other elite were being well fed! During the wedding of Nicholas, normally they would make enough food for everyone. No, they only made food for themselves, and thousands of people died.
Bolsheviks. Communists. Extremists who are also at the absolute end of their rope, angry, furious and pretty much rabid animals. When people are pushed beyond the brink, mercy stops existing. Rationality, any kind of sane reasoning, it just dies. Sometimes forever. They didn't want the royalty to ever return to power, let alone exist. And so the Romanov main family was completely exterminated. There are fairly close relatives alive today, there was a wedding with a Romanov a few years back, but the main family is extinct. Such absolute evil. It is sickening that people look up to such evil ideologies today. And frightening.
0:30 ooff this part always gets me! I always imagine some sort of evil queen in a dress with a high collar and a long train just confidently descending down a long staircase.
Arthur Vador It's good, but not as good as the other two. There was a lot of "talking" in it. I feel like the song could have been implemented a little better, similar to Jafar's song.
Yes!! And both songs were sung by the incredible Jim Cummings (well, for Be Prepared, he only did the last part, but still! It was my favorite part of the song!)
I was once the most mystical man in all Hyrule! When the Sages betrayed me they made a mistake! My curse made each of them pay, but one little girl got away! Princess Zelda beware, Ganondorf's awake!
I still love this movie, I am now 26 years old now and I was 3 years old when this movie came out. Still love the movie and most of the songs, it’s a beautiful classic movie.
One thing I can say about this movie is that I loved it so much that when I found out the Romanovs were a real family I wanted to learn about them. I made me interested in the real history around their deaths. Even as a kid I knew the movie wasn't accurate. I mean a guy comes back from the dead and there is a talking bat. People who get angry at the movie for it's inaccuracies baffle me. i feel the same with Pocahontas . I knew it wasn't a true story, though it was years later I found out she was a real person. Again it made me want to learn her true story.
That's why this movie is underrated? Because it's inaccurate? That's like people hating on the classic Disney movies because they differ form the Brothers Grim.
I was once the most powerful lion in all Pride Lands, When Mufasa took over he made a mistake. My plot made him dearly pay, But one little cub got away! Little Simba beware your uncle's awake.
We were the most dominate race in all America. When the white men came, they made a mistake. Darn it, I can't think of what else to put here. Anybody know what I am talking about?😁
I meant the historical inaccuracy of the movie. Guess I should just pretend this movie wasn't based on anything. Especially since Anastasia died with the rest of her family.

Just saw "Wish" last night because I wanted to have an opinion about it, and the villain song is even worse with the context of what's going on. THIS is the kind of villain song Magnifico should have been singing. Something intense, epic, and threatening, not upbeat, light, and jovial.

A lot of people hate that the backup singers are bugs, but I kinda like it. Bugs eat corpses and Rasputin is a living corpse, which gives off some morbid implications...
For a lot of people, I can agree why this scene should have the demons singing and dancing along with the song but I can odly see why they went with bugs. Rasputin was already dead but without the deed being finished he was basically stuck rotting away in his grave and the only thing that would keep a corpse company is bugs.

@@Killerqueen69420 renowned music producer Jim Steinman, who produced and wrote music for Meat Loaf, Celine Dion, and Bonnie Tyler (amongst others), oversaw the production for this song in Anastasia. The piano arrangements, guitars, epic sound effects and rock drums could have been his idea.
However part of the melody of this song (“come my minions…”) made it into the show in the new song “stay I pray you”
I know, right!? Why TF did this song never make it into the musical? It's probably by far the most famous and popular one from the movie, arguably even moreso than Once Upon A December!

Tigger is not a villain or an evil tiger, Share Khan! You must be thinking about a different actor who play a different character.
In the dark of the night I was tossing and turning
And the nightmare I had was as bad as can be
It scared me out of my wits!
A corpse falling to bits!
Then I opened my eyes and the nightmare was me!
I was once the most mystical man in all Russia
When the royals betrayed me they made a mistake
My curse made each of them pay
But one little girl got away
Little Anya, beware, Rasputin's awake!
In the dark of the night, evil will find her
In the dark of the night, just before dawn
Revenge will be sweet
When the curse is complete
In the dark of the night, she'll be gone!
I can feel that my powers are slowly returning
Tie my sash and a dash of cologne for that smell!
As the pieces fall into place
I'll see her crawl into place
Do svidanya, Anya, your grace, farewell!
In the dark of the night, terror will find her (terror's the least I can do!)
In the dark of the night, evil will brew
Soon she will feel
That her nightmares are real
In the dark of the night, she'll be through
In the dark of the night, evil will find her (find her)
In the dark of the night, terror comes true (doom her)

It's the end of the line
In the dark of the night
In the dark of the night
Come, my minions
Rise for your master
Let your evil shine
Find her now, yes
Fly ever faster

He truly was a malicious Don Bluth villain.
So his plan was to give Anya really bad nightmares, and drive her to commit suicide?
@@thesladesterb3vt3co7h it sounds like Cummings also did the singing parts for Scar, hence more parallels. The guy's very versatile!
0:33 the chills! Those violins are amazing, combine with the true royal story of the Romanovs gives extra chills!
2:52 is my favorite part of the song...I can feel the power from this song

Honestly such a banger of a villain song. Power ballad vibes to it, and some really witty word play. "The end of the line" being the end of the line for Anya, and the end of the line for the Romanov family (yes mom is still alive but she isn't having kids anytime soon).
I've always loved the line, "I awoke from my dream to find the nightmare was me."

At 2:09 when he says he'll see her "crawl into place" you can hear a gunshot in the score. Also one at 1:30 "one girl got away". Makes this song so much darker...
I know!! I told my mom that once I realized how dark it is. I’m surprised she even let me and my sister watch this, but also it’s one of her favorite films, so I can’t blame her
When villain songs actually meant something...
What do you mean?
if I had to guess what you mean, this was when Villains were straight up evil loving every second of it and didn't need to hid behind the facade they are good guys
Kevin Murphy
Thank you for that assessment.
Kevin Murphy
I was literally just going to say that. Even "Mother knows best" can't compare to "Hellfire." But nowadays people are too sensitive and want to make things less evil. It's more about the surprise last minute saving than a whole movie of good versus the truly evil. Hans doesn't come close to The Evil Queen or Maleficent.. Those villains actually gave you the creeps
this song always has me grinning from ear to ear it’s so good! i love the way it sounds and the key changes and the bridge!! it’s just all so good
Sweet.
Evil Tigger singing.
Oh. OHHHHHHHH. How did I not know this???
Dude, go look this guy up. His name is Jim Cummings. We practically owe him our childhood. He voice acted Pete from Goofy, Ed from Lion King, Tantor from Tarzan, Kaa from The Jungle Book. It's impossible to name them all.
Let's not forget Julian Robotnik.
And half of Scar's singing voice.
And also Hondo from Star Wars
he is one amazing guy
I would have thought it would have been ghost/spirits due to the voices
Detective Steve thought of another creative element, among the skeletons, would be Anastasia's parents, just to rub salt in the wound
They do keep some musical motifs from it! The “come my minions, rise for your master” melody is the song in the train station, I think
They're lavender and pink for goodness sake.

seriously ..its too good to be a villain song …everything about the movie is amazing
Way better than most disney villain songs. Don Bluth really proved he could be better than Disney with Anastasia.
Don Bluth used to work for Disney's™ in 1970s , BEFORE he quit !
I wish Don Bluth was still making movies.
Certainly not movies like A Troll in Central Park though...
I wish Disney did a Live-Action remake of Anastasia, because Don Bluth was involved with the production of Sleeping Beauty in 1959.

This movie was SO UNDERRATED!!
This song regularly pops up in my head. I had no business watching this!
This is my favourite princess movie by far. I love the history, I love that they found a storyline that doesn’t rely on the romance and the princess doesn’t need saving, I love the beautiful dresses and the flashbacks, dreams etc I just love the way it makes me FEEL
Best of all I love the soundtrack.
What's your opinion of the top three best villain songs?
This is one of my two favorite villain songs from (originally) non-Disney animated films. The other is "You're Playing with the Big Boys Now" from Prince of Egypt.
The prince of Egypt has such good bangers fr
Fun fact: the girls sewed jewels into their dresses so it was harder for the girls to die easily. Those girls didn’t deserve to die. Rest In Peace: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia ( OTMA)
Yup! Unfortunately, the only ones it seemed to work for were Anastasia and Marie.
Rest in PISS
Did you really named this a FUN fact?...
The only problem with this song is that it ends.
Seriously it would've been perfect if it had a reprise somewhere later in the film.
Ooo, yeah! Maybe it could have played on the train scene just a bit and then full force in the end fight scene.

Pocahontas’ real story is actually very sad because she was only 11 years old when it happened

SO, anyone else realize that he sings this while literally rotting in his own personal Hell.
A lot of people hate that the backup singers are bugs, but I kinda like it. Bugs eat corpses and Rasputin is a living corpse, which gives off some morbid implications...
This song had no business being this damn good
When you realize Tigger lost his voice a little and went insane
For a lot of people, I can agree why this scene should have the demons singing and dancing along with the song but I can odly see why they went with bugs. Rasputin was already dead but without the deed being finished he was basically stuck rotting away in his grave and the only thing that would keep a corpse company is bugs.
