Each of Ok Go's music videos have a theme of extremely calculated chaos and you'd think that might get old or samey but it doesn't. Each video is incredibly impressive and unique.
If so many people were not confused about the most basic and obvious question in life, then yes, the question would be unnecessary. The flight attendant zero-g ballet may have been one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Can only wonder what performances like that will be in the future. Now I want a cirque du soleil, INNNnnn SPAAACEEeeee
Oh, there *was* barfing...and fainting...and myriad problems, over and over, ruining take after take. This was literally the *last possible take* on the *last possible flight* of the *last possible day*. Check out the making-of video, it's fascinating
it's even worse. they had to do one splice because paint got on the camera, and Andy (in red) had major problems with nausea, so he had to go up AGAIN... the splice is right before the paint bit by the way
If you watch the video about how they made this, he absolutely HATED this project with a passion 😂 he got so ill. Massive respect for completing it, and of course huge respect for all of them in general 🙏

Still one of the greatest music videos of all time in my opinion. Just watched a lot of the behind the scenes footage and I am blown away by their dedication.
I think I've watched this 8 or 9 times by now and I am still impressed every time. This is just a sublime piece of art. The two zero G ballerinas add a wonderful touch of elegance but even the band members did a great job moving in the space.

I can't even imagine how difficult it was for a choreographer and dancers to create a zero G dance routine like that. Those two girls dressed as flight attendants must have been ballerinas or ice skaters because they're coordination in 3 dimensions was stunning. Very cool.
They were aerial acrobats, said Okgo in a video on Instagram about this. They were hired because their bodies were used to spinning around without puking. 😅
I was confused because zero-G planes only have about 30 seconds of zero-G in each parabola they fly. Then I read the Wikipedia article; this is eight different zero-G episodes cleverly spliced together and slowed down 30%.
Watch carefully and you'll see several moments where everything falls to the floor during a pull-up... and one where one of the band barely makes it to his seat before he gets slammed down into the cushions.
I was going to comment something similar, and then I though surely other people have also realized that if this is indeed “real” it is spliced together and slowed down, so it seems they are in the air weightless for much longer. Slowing it down too for dramatic effect, even still , that is amazing they too this in several free fall intervals over the course of days. Blows my mind at the creativity this took.
I think I would’ve liked it more if it didn’t have the “glitchy” part but that may just be their style or something they liked, but yeah the video was dope
@nicholashylton6857 I personally like virtual insanity more, it's more simple but feels more creative, I love the birds and insects between the shots, and the blood at the end. I also just really love jamiroquai
After watching the behind the scene, I now understand why Andy looked so pissed at the end after throwing the luggage. This was after weeks of shooting, and the take before this one was PERFECT except paint got on the lens at the end, ruining the shot. He so badly didn't want to go up again, but did anyway, hoping that the next take will be the last one. Even the way he smashed the pinata, you can tell he's thinking "You son of a b***h!"
These guys are just incredible artists. I don't know if they have complete creative control over their videos, but every single one is amazing. I would love to be a fly on the wall when they are storyboarding something like this. I'd also like to be a fly on the wall when whoever pays for this stuff hears about these ideas...

Actually I think it might have been all one take, but there were several sections of the video where they weren't in freefall. You can tell because suddenly all the props are all over the floor instead of floating in the air.
@@moxin5004 so after commenting here I watched the behind the scenes video. They did do everything in one take, but on the non-zero-g portions of they flight they stayed incredibly still and then sped up the footage for those sections.
Wait, I seem to recall a documentary about the vomit comet. Changing the flight computer would require a re-certification of the airplane so if my memory serves me it uses the original firmware and freaks out everyone they do a dive, they are just really used to hitting the mute button.

The dancers look like they are having a great time. Must have been fun to work out routines in zero gravity - like water ballet with breathing. lol. The bit where they form a loop is really cool.

It was probably fun until the plane pulls up and they feel twice their weight pushing down on them. That's the trade off for real Zero-G on Earth; when the plane "dives" they get the Zero-G feeling, but unless they want to crash the plane eventually has to pull back up and all that force is applied to them in the opposite direction making it extremely unpleasant (not to mention the motion sickness you're bound to get from riding "waves" on a plane).
It happens in "I won't let you down" too. You go through the whole video like "wow this is so cool, any of the following seconds are going to be better than this."
I loved the natural flow of this video; every few seconds they have to spend time ascending so that they can maintain the descent necessary for zero g, so you see everything collapse on the ground and the people sit still for a few seconds like half a dozen times or more lol
Watch the "behind the scenes" video. They get 25 seconds of freefall, and then four and a half minutes of gravity, so they had to hold the position they were in, and edit out the long intervals later, watch for the points about every 21-22 seconds where they hit the ground, then start floating again
Fun fact: The ending is called the Thunderdrome. It took 8 takes to finally get it right. The 7th take was the best one, but the camera had paint on it at the end. The 8th take is in the video today.
This is incorrect. The video is split up into 8 sections because of the length of the zero g period in the plane flight. It could not be filmed in one take. There were 21 flights in total. All details on Wikipedia, search for "Upside Down & Inside Out".

Lol stil cracks me up years later, that ending is awesome with the paint baloons (the orange paint sails over his head like an umbrella and it fills me with peace).
No wires, No green screen, but plenty of computing power was used to stich those 8 zero-g parabolic arcs together to make the transitions look seamless. A lot of hard work went into this in the form of planning, choreography, timing, lots of practice and execution. The time stamps for the start of each zero-g period are: #1: 0:23 #2: 0:45 #3: 1:04 #4: 1:25 #5: 1:46 #6: 2:07 #7: 2:26 #8: 2:47
I dont think there were any cuts. the way these zero-g planes work is that they basically go up (gravity) and then go into freefall (zero-g) and rinse and repeat throughout the video
@@Tealsquiddev there is a cut & stitch in the video cause zero gravity only takes 27sec & 45min to get back to another zero gravity. the song is 3min & you can't have a 3min zero gravity unless you're on outer space...which I doubt they will ever be as the behind the scenes video says the entire ordeal is a puking marathon for the crew. (therefore none of them will ever pass the med examination & training to be astronaut/cosmonaut)

This music video was playing on a dvd that we have in the store where i work, and the kids would get so mesmerized by it. I kind of explained it to them, telling them about zero gravity, and how they were in a plane, and one of the kids ask "Is that why we have to wear seat belts?" I told him yes.

Right at 1:46 you can see where they spliced two clips together. Watch the girl on the left's hand on her hip. This one had to be multiple shots because you can't keep zero G going for three minutes straight or the plane will crash. In the BTS vid they said it can only do zero G for about 30 seconds at a time, so they had to cleverly plan moments where they stop moving so they can cut and wait for the plane to go back up for another dive.
Please be more accurate, this video in particular is NOT in one take because you can't pull Zero G for that long here on Earth. More accurately the plane can't.
according to their website it is one take, but with the climb back up cut out, so they drop for 20-30 seconds, then freeze for 2 min while they climb back up and continue when they dive again.
It is a single take, of a 15 minute flight with performers holding still between 27 second intervals of zero gee. The long intervals with gravity are sped up and/or cut out, but the video you see is of 9 consecutive intervals of zero gee with nothing cut in from previous attempts.
Can we all just give a *BIG* thank you and shoutout to the crew and band members for their dedication to creating the music video masterpiece! It was clearly soooo hard to do, but they *did* it! *Thank you everyone who worked on making Upside Down & Inside Out possible!*
+midirok There's no such thing as a "zero gravity system." The "set" was inside an aircraft flying parabolic arcs to give the passengers inside the feeling of weightlessness. Both of you are right... there were many takes of of the video. there was a lot of coreography that had to happen in zero gravity. the problem is that the parabolic flight only provides 27 seconds of zero gravity. OK Go song has parts that last 21 seconds each. The timing of the parabolic maneuver cannot feasibly be changed so they slowed the song down instead, so each 21 second melody lasted 27 seconds. The next hurdle was that after the "freefall" the plane had to climb 10000 feet back up, which obviously way longer than a second or two. for this, OK Go stayed as still as possible for the climb (which was nearly 2 Gs) and sped up/cut out the ascent. Depending on how you look at it you could say it's not filmed in one take... but because the zero gravity parts were all shot consecutively... I consider it to be a single long shot.
Randallpw I saw one of their other "one-take" videos (I don't remember which one, they were in Japan and use a drone camera), and the behind-the-scenes showed that it was filmed much slower than the final video. Fair enough- you could see things moving in an odd way, but, for the most part, it _looks_ like a single, continuous shot from start to finish! This video looks about the same- the camera never stops rolling _even if_ ultimately it was filmed at a slower frame rate and then sped up during editing. You can see when the plane goes up, because everything slides back down and you see muscles straining against the positive-Gs! My point is, they may have shot this multiple times, but the footage they shot was ultimately from a single, continuous shot where the camera does not stop at any point, and there is no trick-photography where they hide a cut by having something big (or photo-shopping with computer animation) hide the cut in the original footage.
That is the most amazing video. You really put on an incredible show for our entertainment. Thanks ! I hope you get the recognition that I think you deserve.
LOL. If you watch the "making of" video for this they made a fake aircraft interior and placed that inside a Russian airplane. And, for safety, they didn't use paint, per se, but colored water. They did something like 312 parabolas to get all of the shots. The interesting part is that each parabola lasts about 28 seconds, but they divided the song into 21 second sections and played it back and recorded it at a slightly slower speed so that it would work out (and also made it easier to remain completely still in between drops so that when it's viewed all together it looks like one continuous take). Surprisingly, the "making of" video (about 19 minutes) is on Netflix. It's called "Gravity is just a habit". JW3HH
1:31 Holy shit those ladies are amazing! Those spins at the end were very figure skater-esque. I kinda wish the video had more of them being acrobatic dance queens in zero g. I can only imagine how long it took to clean the entire plane, replace the props, clean the costumes, and refuel the plane for another take, though. I love how with the flight attendant’s ballet they took advantage of the principle of angular momentum. I’ve seen physics teachers spinning on swivel chairs but I have never seen in just in the air before!

Sped up video doesn't look this clean. They explain the process in their Behind The Scenes short film and actually show what a sped up pause looks like.... not smooth like what we see here.
The amazing thing is that they had to time this to not only the music but the parabolic arcs. You can see the parts where the plane started climbing again. They had to quickly get into a seat or a standing position to prepare for what I assume is a 1+ G maneuver.

This is amazing! My psychology teacher showed this to us to explain how free falling can mimic zero gravity, and the amount of time put into this is crazy! Having to fall from the sky inside an airplane constantly just to film this music video is amazing! The cleanup and details must have been exhausting! When the balloons with paint popped, all I could think was "Noooooo.... that's going to take forever to clean up!" You guys are amazing for being able to shoot this video and to keep your dance moves on point without flying off or all over the place. Just props to OK Go! Props to the clean up crew! Free falling doesn't "mimic" zero gravity. There is really no difference between the Physics of this and the weightlessnes you would experience, say, aboard the ISS. A Spaceship in Orbit is, after all, just freefalling around Earth.
This honestly should be their most viewed of all time. The effort put into making this song, and how good it looks is insane. Plus this is probably their best song ever made. Absolutely amazing video.
At this rate, If Ok Go shows a dragon with wings and fire breath, and said it was real, I'd believe because all their videos are... incredibly magical.

I think I've watched this 8 or 9 times by now and I am still impressed every time. This is just a sublime piece of art. The two zero G ballerinas add a wonderful touch of elegance but even the band members did a great job moving in the space.

I was confused because zero-G planes only have about 30 seconds of zero-G in each parabola they fly. Then I read the Wikipedia article; this is eight different zero-G episodes cleverly spliced together and slowed down 30%.
Watch carefully and you'll see several moments where everything falls to the floor during a pull-up... and one where one of the band barely makes it to his seat before he gets slammed down into the cushions.

I was going to comment something similar, and then I though surely other people have also realized that if this is indeed “real” it is spliced together and slowed down, so it seems they are in the air weightless for much longer.
Slowing it down too for dramatic effect, even still , that is amazing they too this in several free fall intervals over the course of days.
Blows my mind at the creativity this took.
They must have sang along to music that was sped up 30% also.

After watching the behind the scene, I now understand why Andy looked so pissed at the end after throwing the luggage. This was after weeks of shooting, and the take before this one was PERFECT except paint got on the lens at the end, ruining the shot.
He so badly didn't want to go up again, but did anyway, hoping that the next take will be the last one.
Even the way he smashed the pinata, you can tell he's thinking "You son of a b***h!"

Wait, I seem to recall a documentary about the vomit comet. Changing the flight computer would require a re-certification of the airplane so if my memory serves me it uses the original firmware and freaks out everyone they do a dive, they are just really used to hitting the mute button.

It was probably fun until the plane pulls up and they feel twice their weight pushing down on them. That's the trade off for real Zero-G on Earth; when the plane "dives" they get the Zero-G feeling, but unless they want to crash the plane eventually has to pull back up and all that force is applied to them in the opposite direction making it extremely unpleasant (not to mention the motion sickness you're bound to get from riding "waves" on a plane).
Every second, when you think "thats it, they cant top this thing" ... the video gets a tad more crazy.
They escalated it very intelligently. It ends leagues over it's start.
It happens in "I won't let you down" too. You go through the whole video like "wow this is so cool, any of the following seconds are going to be better than this."

I introduced my 17 mo old boy to OK GO and this is his favorite! He giggles when the intro comes up!
I loved the natural flow of this video; every few seconds they have to spend time ascending so that they can maintain the descent necessary for zero g, so you see everything collapse on the ground and the people sit still for a few seconds like half a dozen times or more lol
Watch the "behind the scenes" video. They get 25 seconds of freefall, and then four and a half minutes of gravity, so they had to hold the position they were in, and edit out the long intervals later, watch for the points about every 21-22 seconds where they hit the ground, then start floating again
They also sped up the final footage

This is incorrect. The video is split up into 8 sections because of the length of the zero g period in the plane flight. It could not be filmed in one take. There were 21 flights in total. All details on Wikipedia, search for "Upside Down & Inside Out".

No wires, No green screen, but plenty of computing power was used to stich those 8 zero-g parabolic arcs together to make the transitions look seamless. A lot of hard work went into this in the form of planning, choreography, timing, lots of practice and execution.

I dont think there were any cuts. the way these zero-g planes work is that they basically go up (gravity) and then go into freefall (zero-g) and rinse and repeat throughout the video

Right at 1:46 you can see where they spliced two clips together. Watch the girl on the left's hand on her hip.
This one had to be multiple shots because you can't keep zero G going for three minutes straight or the plane will crash. In the BTS vid they said it can only do zero G for about 30 seconds at a time, so they had to cleverly plan moments where they stop moving so they can cut and wait for the plane to go back up for another dive.
Please be more accurate, this video in particular is NOT in one take because you can't pull Zero G for that long here on Earth. More accurately the plane can't.
according to their website it is one take, but with the climb back up cut out, so they drop for 20-30 seconds, then freeze for 2 min while they climb back up and continue when they dive again.
It is a single take, of a 15 minute flight with performers holding still between 27 second intervals of zero gee. The long intervals with gravity are sped up and/or cut out, but the video you see is of 9 consecutive intervals of zero gee with nothing cut in from previous attempts.

so it's actually really cool how they did it. Both of you are right... there were many takes of of the video. there was a lot of coreography that had to happen in zero gravity. the problem is that the parabolic flight only provides 27 seconds of zero gravity. OK Go song has parts that last 21 seconds each. The timing of the parabolic maneuver cannot feasibly be changed so they slowed the song down instead, so each 21 second melody lasted 27 seconds. The next hurdle was that after the "freefall" the plane had to climb 10000 feet back up, which obviously way longer than a second or two. for this, OK Go stayed as still as possible for the climb (which was nearly 2 Gs) and sped up/cut out the ascent. Depending on how you look at it you could say it's not filmed in one take... but because the zero gravity parts were all shot consecutively... I consider it to be a single long shot.

I saw one of their other "one-take" videos (I don't remember which one, they were in Japan and use a drone camera), and the behind-the-scenes showed that it was filmed much slower than the final video. Fair enough- you could see things moving in an odd way, but, for the most part, it _looks_ like a single, continuous shot from start to finish!
This video looks about the same- the camera never stops rolling _even if_ ultimately it was filmed at a slower frame rate and then sped up during editing. You can see when the plane goes up, because everything slides back down and you see muscles straining against the positive-Gs!
My point is, they may have shot this multiple times, but the footage they shot was ultimately from a single, continuous shot where the camera does not stop at any point, and there is no trick-photography where they hide a cut by having something big (or photo-shopping with computer animation) hide the cut in the original footage.

LOL. If you watch the "making of" video for this they made a fake aircraft interior and placed that inside a Russian airplane. And, for safety, they didn't use paint, per se, but colored water. They did something like 312 parabolas to get all of the shots.
The interesting part is that each parabola lasts about 28 seconds, but they divided the song into 21 second sections and played it back and recorded it at a slightly slower speed so that it would work out (and also made it easier to remain completely still in between drops so that when it's viewed all together it looks like one continuous take).
Surprisingly, the "making of" video (about 19 minutes) is on Netflix. It's called "Gravity is just a habit".

@@sometimessnarky1642 It was an artificial interior within an interior of a plane- what you see is not the actual plane- it was all just ripped out and likely thrown away. The ACTUAL interior never got paint in it.
If this is one of the "vomit comet" planes, I imagine the interior is designed for easy cleaning...

knowing how the video was made, I'm amazed how clean the cuts between pauses is. It's super well done.
i assumed it was all one take which is why they sat down at various points. you can see moments where they are all on the floor. i assume thats where they cut
@@ThePurpleCheesecakeZebra the way the plane works, it does a bunch of parabolas. Each bit of zero g lasts about 30 seconds and then they have to wait for the plane to fly back up. While the plane flies back up they have gravity again.
It's not necessary a cut, but just sped up by a lot when the everything falls and they are increasing their elevation again.
Sped up video doesn't look this clean. They explain the process in their Behind The Scenes short film and actually show what a sped up pause looks like.... not smooth like what we see here.

The amazing thing is that they had to time this to not only the music but the parabolic arcs.
You can see the parts where the plane started climbing again. They had to quickly get into a seat or a standing position to prepare for what I assume is a 1+ G maneuver.

This is amazing! My psychology teacher showed this to us to explain how free falling can mimic zero gravity, and the amount of time put into this is crazy! Having to fall from the sky inside an airplane constantly just to film this music video is amazing! The cleanup and details must have been exhausting! When the balloons with paint popped, all I could think was "Noooooo.... that's going to take forever to clean up!" You guys are amazing for being able to shoot this video and to keep your dance moves on point without flying off or all over the place. Just props to OK Go! Props to the clean up crew! Props to S7 Airlines! Props to everyone who contributed to this!

Free falling doesn't "mimic" zero gravity. There is really no difference between the Physics of this and the weightlessnes you would experience, say, aboard the ISS. A Spaceship in Orbit is, after all, just freefalling around Earth.
