Jonathan Reiterman You can have green things with green screen. Just takes post-processing or someone at the controls to adjust the system doing the processing.
Jeffry Fleischer Actually, when shooting green things, typically a blue screen is used. It'd be very very difficult to do the chroma with all this green stuff against a green screen.
The most impressive tech in this video is the consistently working umbrellas.
They are made in Japan... not China! Big difference.

Ok this is literally incredible for so many reasons. The incredible choreography, staying on beat and synchronized the whole time, using over a THOUSAND people, not to mention the fact that it was shot in one take. It gives off the same vibes as the opening shot of A Touch of Evil
Hey I actually know the movie reference! Evocative of the advancement of technology, looks like the creative team behind this music video updated the crane shot to a drone shot. Amazing piloting there just a few feet above the ground and indoors! And I totally agree with you, this video blew my mind that such choreography would even be possible.

@@solanaceous Oh, you are very wrong. The making of this video is well documented, took thousands of people, thousands of dancers, and--as in every OK GO video there is no CGI, animation, or visual tricks. That's OK GO's thing, after all.
@@wilkeath One visual trick they did use was filming in half speed (or something similar) to buy time for the choreography, then bumping up the speed in post to match the music. I dont fault them for it though, having thousands of people moving at the speed required at full speed would lead to accidents really easily. Half speed gives everyone twice as much time to get into position and sync their movements.
There are so many things about this video that are hard to wrap my brain around. The catchiness of the song. The number of umbrellas. The fact that it was done in seamless one-shot/one-camera style. The choreography. The peaceful bit of bliss at the end.
But MOST of all? The fact that 7,200 people hit the DISLIKE button. HOW?!?

@@liimlsan3 No, I think they meant that the entire thing was recorded without splicing 2 or more different recordings, that the entire video was one continuous recording, not that it was first try
AFAIK they weren't able to do splices or many takes, because the weather was so bad in Japan for weeks. It rain all the time and the drone couldn't fly in the heavy winds. They had a very small window where the sun came out for just some minutes. They did their try and succeeded. They trained parts of it indoors of course during the rain, but at the end, it was a real close call. I think you can see all of this in their making of, too.

I love how you can see the markings on the ground, makes it so much more real and impressive. I have a back ground in theatre and a little in film, always neat to see the work that goes into these
I love the rawness in the shots like the characters still in frame, and the position markers on the ground. I feel that it gives OK Go it's own sorta style.
Right? They had to have a) had experience in marching band or choreographing for stage performances, and b) thought to themselves collectively, "You know what would be cool? If the entertainment in the MV was partially showing the *making of* the MV!"

Unless they have a sponsor (which has mostly been the case recently), OK Go actually usually has a low budget for their music videos.

This was filmed at Long Wood Station in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. I have filmed a shoe commercial (for a shoe retailer) there. It isn't cheap, but neither is it super expensive. This is a failed shopping mall that has been retained as a film shooting studio and event space.
It’s said on Wikipedia that they’re know for their low budget music, if I’m correct. It’s their ideas that are so bizarre

Watch the behind the scenes. It actually was raining a lot, unexpectedly, except for the day of the shoot when it was surprisingly clear.

watching Ok Go's video always make me emotional. Doesn't matter which one or what the song is ever about something about seeing all the effort they put into their work and all the people that they bring together to make it happen and all the thought that goes into it makes me feel big emotions. ***** recorded in double speed - instead of 24 frames/sec, 48. Makes some of the action seem a little jerky. They had to sing everything and do all actions in half speed to make it look like normal.
P Higby slightly incorrect info from you and EverSteps, I'm afraid. EverSteps said it was stop motion. Stop motion refers to separate images joined together to make it appear like a regular video. This video has simply been sped up. Also, you said that the video was recorded at a higher framerate than it is played back. But that would make them go in slow motion :-). What happened is that the band performed (and fake sung) in slow motion and then the video had frames cut out.
P Higby: Chromana is absolutely right. It was probably recorded at a full 30fps, doubled to 60fps, and then chopped back to 30fps, either with some frame smoothing or (more likely) just dropping every other frame. As can be seen in some of the behind the scenes video, the octocopter is sitting on a dolly at least during the first part of the video, and the bumping along the brick path is what gives the video the distinctive stop motion look there, but it isn't as apparent in other sections of the video.
