I used to road race a C-prod prepped 240Z in vintage in the Midwest and had a chat with the Gerry Mason Sr., owner of the #3 sister car, in 97-ish at Road America, about the Morton car. IIRC he said the unibody was just too far gone to restore, something about a bad side swipe, and half the shell was tore up bad, so a rebody makes sense. John's accident at Daytona was not surprising and this is partly why I decided to hang up the gloves with vintage - unibody repair can be quite challenging and most modern guys will treat the shell as if it's a disposable item.

I saw the original BRE Datsun 510 in John Griswold's garage, in Berkeley, in the winter of '78 or '79. I was visiting my friend, Stephen Cole, who did restoration work for Griswold during the off season of racing. I believe he was part of the crew that built, maintained and raced it- the brown BRE. (still in Griswold's collections ?) Thinking Rob Fuller, in San Jose, or you, might want to track this one down, because it should not be lost or forgotten. (Think about Stephen taking apart and restoring Jackie Stewart's Formula 1 car that Jackie won the world championship in! . After Stephen had completed it, Griswold rented out Sears Point for a couple of hours and they went to test it out - and then put it into storage.) I'm sending this information along after watching the Z Car Garage segments from May '21. Stephen had sold me his original green '70 Datsun 510 for $300 dollars, when we met in Sonoma County while I was attending Sonoma State working on my first masters in psychology. I drove that car for nearly 30 years, and the rebuild he did on the original L16 engine lasted nearly 240 K miles. I also acquired a '72 wagon, which became our 2nd family car, both being part of our family and my two sons first cars, well into the mid 2000's. I'm now 70 and still wish I had not sold my beautiful, yellow, modified station wagon with the factory tinted glass, center console and factory tach.....with the DT mags. I very much appreciate your keeping their stories alive and well and running around our streets and highways. Thank you.
That book is so educational. There were a lot of parts I had to re-read, or read slowly for it to sink in, but it's such a good introduction into turbos and all the engineering that makes it all work. Even if a person is already familiar with turbos, there are nuggets of info that are great, especially when it comes to materials.
9:21 no rear defrost. What's funny is that in Australia majority of our cars had the clear glass. Where as for North American cars it was a 69 model feature it would appear. In Australia the vertical defrost glass is desirable because that's rare for us. :D
My boss at G-Force Racing Gear owned that Fitzgerald car for a while. I moved it all around the shop. He even had the fiberglass molds for it. I wasn’t sure until I saw the “oh shit light”. Story was that car put Paul Newman into the wall. Cool stuff.
I've made exacting replica paintjobs of that BRE 240-Z so many times in so many games I've lost count. Every game with custom paint livery ability and the old Z car, I've made that livery as exact as I can get it within the limitations of the games. I've got 2 different 1/25th scale plastic Revell models of it sitting in my closet waiting to be built. If anybody plays Forza Horizon 2, 3, or 4, that livery is in the game under my name. I've also done the BRE 510's as well.
Nissan needs to make a modern 510 sedan and revive the Datsun brand. Make it RWD, manual trans, independent suspension and have 4 doors. Design it to be easily upgraded in the important places, e.g. suspension. This would be a fun yet practical car.
36:44 That's my bent H beam rod and piston with the top ring land crushed hanging there on the wall at the top of the screen. I think that was the first entry in the ZCG hall of shame.
OMG Where has this shop been!? My father has a red 1971 240Z that is in fairly good shape. I think he has been looking to have the paint redone for ages because its starting to crack in spots. Originally, he had located a shop in Arizona that was going to do it, but if there is one in the bay area that can do the work, I'd like to look into that too to save him the trouble of driving out there. I think the style looks the same as the "butters" one since the rear quarter panel badges have "240Z" written out rather than just the circular Z badge. This one has the rear defrosts and an electric antenna that hasn't been working right for decades. I'll definitely shoot Rob a message when I get a chance.
Maybe it was the influence of Smoking Joe Camel as a kid since my parents smoked Camels, But I love seeing the old Camel GT sticker under the Activision.
I have an 82 280ZX that needs TLC too Larry, so how much did it cost though to have all that stuff done on your car. Just a regular Joe here asking. We got dreams too but it depends on the $$$. So how much should we expect to shell out? Thank you for your response.

@@travismassingale7801 Z Car Garage is a small, independent shop. They don't "have something against" any model Z car. They simply don't have the bandwidth to work on every single car made by Nissan. Remember, the VG engine is also in the mighty Z32, which they specialize in. Many Z31s have come through the shop, before they had social media: www.zcarblog.com/2011/11/03/performance/red-z31-love-trevors-300zx.html Same goes for S130 cars, or any other Z generation you can think of. If you don't see a Z31 or S130 in a video or on social media, it does not mean they don't like or have not worked on those cars at some point.

I don't have the time to watch this rn, but YESSSS **NUTTTTT**
Nissan needs to make a modern 510 sedan and revive the Datsun brand. Make it RWD, manual trans, independent suspension and have 4 doors. Design it to be easily upgraded in the important places, e.g. suspension. This would be a fun yet practical car.
LARRY WE NEED A REVIEW ON THAT LAND SPEED Z THAT THING IS FRIGGING AWESOMW
I could listen to u guys all day
36:44 That's my bent H beam rod and piston with the top ring land crushed hanging there on the wall at the top of the screen. I think that was the first entry in the ZCG hall of shame.
Forklift branded as Datsun? Wow! 😲👍
Lol. I know where the Corky Bell car has been hiding. Great to see that Rawb found it. Game on.
This channel is fantastic... amazing content! 👍
I love these guys, gotta love the Z
Rob Fuller is a legend. 😎
Singing Velvet Underground, right off the bat I like this guy.
Maybe it was the influence of Smoking Joe Camel as a kid since my parents smoked Camels, But I love seeing the old Camel GT sticker under the Activision.
Larry's Z in This vs That or I'm unsubscribing. I'll do it... I swear I'll do it!
Man I want to take my Z car to Rob!!! I wish I lived on the west coast.
I have an 82 280ZX that needs TLC too Larry, so how much did it cost though to have all that stuff done on your car. Just a regular Joe here asking. We got dreams too but it depends on the $$$. So how much should we expect to shell out? Thank you for your response.
Quality Wholesome Content
Love Larry & Rob together! Love the outro of Larry’s videos too! What’s the song?
Could you please go shoot Adam Carolla's garage; great collection of cars with several of Paul Newman's Nissan/Datsun race cars that Adam still runs at vintage races.
yes i would bet they have a Z31, geez z car garage got something against the mighty z31 and the VG
@@travismassingale7801 Z Car Garage is a small, independent shop. They don't "have something against" any model Z car. They simply don't have the bandwidth to work on every single car made by Nissan. Remember, the VG engine is also in the mighty Z32, which they specialize in. Many Z31s have come through the shop, before they had social media: www.zcarblog.com/2011/11/03/performance/red-z31-love-trevors-300zx.html
Same goes for S130 cars, or any other Z generation you can think of. If you don't see a Z31 or S130 in a video or on social media, it does not mean they don't like or have not worked on those cars at some point.
@@ZCarGarage_Videos contacted Rob on insta. And asked why no love for z31, and "Nothing personal just doesn’t fit our business model
Parts are hard to come by. Zs for the win." So no he doesn't personally work on z31s
The price of the seat cover with the beads will soon exceed the price of an original 240z...LMAO
I love those 510s. Considering a Hakosuka is fairly unobtainable, I'd definitely try to get a 510 wagon if I got a vintage Japanese project.
Clean wagon just sold for 55k on bring a trailer 😵
@@drivendreamsorg oh well, maybe one day
@@WaffleDragon gotta get a fixer upper soon! Parts are expensive and tricky to find. Do the more complete the wagon the better.
Any Idea where I might find a dash and front bumper for a 71 240Z ?
So.....So...DOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice shop!
I was the Datsun Dork and Nissan Nerd!!!!! that was me!!! LMAO
Ohhhhhhhhh......early Z race cars.....😛🤤🥰😊😉😍😁
Is there a Z shop in So Cal at this level of service and quality?
