  • Stamp collecting often brings out the creative side of people, whether it's in designing album pages for the most pleasing display of their stamps, to dressing up their outgoing mail with stamps, labels, and other art, to designing cachets for first day covers. Postage stamps are also used in handicrafts, sculptures, and wall art. In this episode of Ted Talks Stamps, I take a look at 3 stamp collectors/artists who are using postage stamps to create their own unique works of art.

My favourites were the stamps on canvas.. Whether she went away and did research about where the stamps were taken from or just used her own creative flair to create the backdrops, that is truly amazin. Especially since I've recently taken up painting myself..All of it is truly inspiring..😍😍😍

Lovely artwork, I have a stamp Flamingo from Suzanne which I adore, I've even seen a seller on Twitter that creates stamp heads to hang your headset on :)

Where do you buy or how to make the 'white mount with shape cut out' ? Like the apple shape?

I think this is an area where you will just have to use your own ingenuity and handicraft skills to fill your need.

Stamp art is something I knew about from a secretary in the Registrars office who made all sorts of useful things by coating common objects with stamps. She would take a tin can and coat it with attractive stamps and the use a clear coating over the stamps. It would make a snappy pencil holder. She also got these clear ash trays from local casinos and do the same thing with them. I always saved my damaged stamps for her.Later I found a member of the parttime staff in the Math department that did stamp art and I saved them for him. So he moved and she died and now have a large tin of damaged to give away. Anyone interested?

Interesting that another viewer described the art as ”vandalism." The word "blasphemy" sprang to my mind at one point early in the video. But no, I don't think either of those is a fair characterization. Some of the art I appreciate more, some less, which is usually how art works -- and stamps, for that matter. What's for sure, this video offers a refreshing perspective on modern philately.

Stamp art has been around for a long time. I recall that some one loved the penny black stamp so much that he papered the walls of one of his rooms with penny blacks. The penny black goes back to 1840 so it is not quite "modern philately".

I don't like to look at things as holy relics for which it is a sacrilege to defile. If someone wants to use their set of US Zeppelins in their smiley face collage, it's none of my business. It's not like we'll experience a shortage of Zeppelins because of it.
