    Thank you so much for helping us promote this side of philately - the study and collection of postage stamps. Lets hope we can inspire even more people to step into our wonderful hobby. Start with something fun, beautiful and simple and before you know it, you'll be travelling around the world on the search for that elusive stamp you need to complete your collection. For more information on my story: blog.ichild.co.uk/2017/12/art-stamped-wonderful-stamp-designs.html - I look forward to seeing everyone's comments.

    What a wonderful video you made on Stampex and Stamp Art, loving it.
    As a collector, or as we like to call ourselves philatelist, we treasure our stamps keep them safe in stockbooks or self made albums.
    How rude then to cut them up ... or maybe not?
    We all have bags full of stamps that are so common that they sell by the thousands for a penny, if we can sell them.
    I must confess that I have even tossed some stamps away in the past. So what a brilliant idea to take just those stamps and use them to make artwork. I picked up one of the key rings myself, it looks great.
    It was a pleasure meeting you at Stampex and I think you created your own art with this video.
    Erik

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great explanation Erik! thank you for clarifying and adding a true perspective from a philatelist such as yourself. It was a pleasure meeting you, and I am glad you were also able to pick up some art while you were there (I also got a key ring) :D

    I know some collectors who would be physically ill if they saw someone cutting up stamps for art.
    Kiloware tends to be infinitely recycled, and when you are the tenth person to pick through a bag you will most certainly find many damaged stamps, and many duplicates. I always remove these, thereby increasing the value of the kiloware for the next collector that gets it. As a result, I also end up with a fair quantity of damaged and heavily duplicated stamps that I am quite happy to turn into artwork.
    My other hobby is growing orchids, and I am about to combine that with stamp art by making some paper tole orchid stamp items.
    An interesting challenge for the world map collage would be to actually use stamps from the country that is where each stamp is placed.
    BUT, be sure to check your stamps thoroughly before consigning them to artwork. I recently bought 200 stamps from a seller on Etsy for about AUD 10. They were packaged for use in artwork. I examined them carefully and found three stamps that were listed varieties, two unlisted varieties, and about twenty collectable postmarks. None of the stamps were damaged and all are suitable for collectors of shades. Total value of the sorted and described stamps is now around $200. My rescue stamps.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hans Proebsting great find! You never know what you can find in kiloware. Well done for identifying them. I think orchids and stamps will be an epic combo, please do make those orchid stamp items. Have fun 😃

    Very interesting way to use your stamps. I tried it several times, but I always felt bad for damaging the stamps. Even if they are duplicates.

  • @Polloycaracolas
    @Polloycaracolas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow! How beautiful could be some of that pieces of art. I have some stamps, but I collect coins. Numismatic people have similar problems, because they don't like if you cut a coin (or a banknote) or if you used it to make art. Most time artists use cheap and common stamps, coins or banknotes, so it's not a problem. I think most people don't like if they don't have an specific stamp or if they had problems to acquire a piece, and then they see it cutted or as a part of an art piece.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can imagine its the same in numismatics, but just as you mention, the artists use common stamps that are not of much value. The pieces of art are certainly beautiful, I love how the artists put these stamps on display in such creative ways. Thanks for watching Leon :)

    The story about Stamp Art is the subject of the December 2019 issue of the American Philatelist, the monthly publication of the APS. I still have saved all my damaged stamps for stamp art. I gave some to a member of the PTI staff at UNLV and to a former secretary who also does stamp art years ago. She has died and the staff member inherited his father's farm and left Vegas. So as of now I have no one to give them to. I will find someone who wants them. Stamp Art is very popular.

      Stamp collections are so varied and isn't that what makes our hobby the world's greatest? I was at a stamp auction this week bidding on an album containing some beautiful and valuable stamps - these I will sell to a collector - but the album cover itself had been decoupaged with old, worthless postage stamps. This made the lot even more attractive to me. As stamp collectors literally die off, for our hobby to survive we must get more stamps on show and into people's lives. On seeing our wonderful hobby in a new, creative light, it doesn't really matter if someone decides to collect GB Seahorses or Disney CTOs, we have a new stamp collector in the world. That's good enough for me.
