The Power of 'No'

  • It’s a short simple word: ‘no’.
    But for some people, it’s extremely difficult to use nonetheless. Especially so-called ‘people pleasers’ have difficulties saying ‘no’ to the people they intend to please. Which is a shame, because the ability to say ‘no’ not only helps us to not do things that we don’t want to do; it’s also a deciding factor whether or not we’re able to commit to a task and to achieve certain goals. Moreover, the word ‘no’ helps us to stick with our values and principles.
    In the word ‘no’ lies great power. And in order to wield this power, it’s essential to see the workings of ‘no’ and how applying ‘no’ more frequently and in the right ways can make our lives better.
    This video explores the power of ‘no’.

      How do you react when people get angry?

    • @mafe4840
      @mafe4840 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JC-ce8uw ideally you disengage but your action is going to depend completely on the circumstances. How you will handle a non violent person getting angry will obviously differ heavily from how you handle a violent person who is now angry. And how you handle a stranger getting angry will differ from how you handle a roommate or family member you live with getting angry, etc. It will also depend on if the person is able to calm down and have a logical conversation later and is able to handle any form of constructive criticism. So yeah i think, your response, has to take into account the specifics about the individual you're dealing with.

    It’s funny, I’ve always been raised saying things like “sorry I can’t do that.” Etc. Until a few years ago I always added an apology when saying no but people always saw this as an opening to argue with me. When I started saying “no” matter of factly with no apology the arguments stopped. At work instead of “sorry I can’t do cash jobs” I say “no, you have to have an account with our head office to have work done.” It works like a charm. Don’t be sorry for saying no, don’t be a dick about it either.

    The power to say no is a primary driver that caused me to start my consulting business. Being the ultimate authority in my own work life and being able to say no to anyone without risking my livelihood is powerful. Yes I have clients that could fire me from a job if I chose not to cooperate, but I have multiple clients and if one doesn't respect my schedule, or advice or ethical stance, there are others that do and I am free to focus on them. I think part of the draw of hiring an "outsider" like me is that I have no compunction to swallow objections and go with the herd. My opinions are generally better respected after I am able to deliver my first (well reasoned and respectful) "no" to a client.

We’d say yes to people when we really mean it and want to help others rather than out of hollow obligation. We’d perhaps form fewer relationships with people but stronger ones with more trust.

    I'm a Gnostic we have a slightly different angle on the creation story. The snake set Adam and Eve free though the knowledge of their own divine nature, which is something God couldn't stand. The garden was a trap of ignorance, like the Matrix.

    • @antony558
      @antony558 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's an interesting interpretation of the Book of Genesis! I've also heard another gnostic interpretation where Sin is the egoic mind, and Adam and Eve gained conceptual knowledge from the tree, and all the fear and desire that comes with it (like their self conciousness). This led to the separation of God (oness, presence, enlightenment or whatever you want to call it) and humans
      I think that's more of a modern take on it though but if I understand it correctly it feels very much in alignment with many other traditions like Bhuddism or Sufism

    • @DannyWohl

      Have you read Autobiography Of a Yogi? I will quote a few paragraphs from the book concerning the Adam and Eve story:
      "Genesis is deeply symbolic, and cannot be grasped by a literal interpretation. It's tree of life is the human body. The spinal cord is like an upturned tree, with man's hair as its roots, and afferent and efferent nerves as branches. The tree of the nervous system bears many enjoyable fruits, or sensations of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. In these, man may rightfully indulge; but he was forbidden the experience of sex, the 'apple' at the center of the body (in the midst of the garden').
      "The 'serpent' represents the coiled-up spinal energy that stimulates the sex nerves. 'Adam' is reason, and 'Eve' is feeling. When the emotion or Eve-consciousness in any human being is overpowered by the sex impulse, his reason or Adam also succumbs".
      Sri Yukteswar says this in the book Autobiography Of a Yogi, written by Paramahansa Yogananda. A superb read!

    Thank you! I have worked hard on this! So rewarding to learn to give myself permission to say "no", sometimes in a kind way, and other times firmly when necessary. "If you don't sacrifice for what you want, what you want will be your sacrifice." So very true!! Thank you!

    Tell a man "yes" a lot and he'll think you're a pushover and an enabler.
    Tell a man "no" and he'll think you're powerful and assertive/aggressive.
    How do I know this, *look at the people around you and you'll see.*

    if you dont want to see things that dont agree with you, you say no. if you dont like what you watch you say no, if you dont like a commentator say no and dont follow. take nothing personally, no is your power. say no to quick pleasures and it makes boundaries against the toxic. no to our cravings and addictions.

    Our refusal to say NO when we want to is what makes us feel emotionally drained, by prioritizing someone else we forget ourselves in the process.

    Our Criminology Professor gave us a lecture on, "Situational Awareness and the Ego". It was largely about establishing personal space, especially in confrontational situation. The susceptible nature of humans was one of the key highlights, the common human condition of not wanting to offend; hence the willingness to go along against all senses of intuition. He used a simple test, "Next time somebody touches you, tell them 'Please don't touch me'", so as to asses their reaction when establishing personal boundaries. What I observed was, it would instantly elevate the ego and could be used as a method of asserting power within a constructive structure.

    This reminds me of the time back when I was a junior clerk in an accounts office and the head guy of that office was an aloof nasty man who controlled the money spending protocols. He relished saying NO to people who sought his approval to purchase things that weren’t budgeted for, he would just look at the requisition form and then say NO and he really liked it when the other person asked what do you mean by NO, his reply was simply NO means NO and he then waited for the other person to leave the room bewildered and then he smiled and chuckled to himself.

    A yes doesn’t always mean a fully commitment to something, just like a no doesn’t mean a complete rejection of something. There are various layers when it comes to make decisions. Yes, I would like to learn more about Greek philosophy, but I don’t want to listen to any teacher or read any book. And even when I say yes to a teacher or a book I am
    Not fully embracing them, I am taking them as references. I can say yes to a woman, I want to live with her. But this yes doesn’t mean I am dedicating my entire life to her, or that she now owns my life. It is a yes to some shared experiences, but not even to all of them. I can say no if you invite me to dance, but maybe it is a no for now because I am tired, because I don’t like this song, because I am talking to a friend. Maybe I will dance with you in a couple of minutes. How many times couples play in bed when one says no but both know it is not necessarily no, but a way of playing with each other in a healthy way. Firm and absolute nos or yeses will come in ultimate situations, maybe in life or death decisions. Out of that, we will have thousands of shades in between.
