  • The power of silence is versatile. Silence can transcend speech, speak without words, and complement where verbal language is lacking. And keeping silent also has advantages in terms of creativity, mental health, spiritual and religious practice, achieving the upper hand in negotiations, and even as a way to intimidate. This video explores the power of silence, unfolding four priceless benefits of being silent.

    Silence between two old close friends is never an embarrassment. Sitting outside, having a drink, or just walking together needs no forced conversion. Being in each others company is sometimes all you both need. Unspoken understanding of each others worth.

      Bullshit. If you are being verbally abused, first keep the person away from you at least 1 meter, and set boundaries. Some abusers react to others being silent as being submissive (freeze response) or not taking them seriously and might attempt to slap or punch you.

    One of the reasons I married my husband was that we can feel totally comfortable by being together but not talking. We can sometimes sit in a car for hours and none of us utters a word and the fact that both of us are comfortable with that is one of the cornerstones of our 15+ years relationship. I need my solitude and so does he. People who feel the need to fill out every bit of silence with their voice, make me incredibly tired and drain my energy. Silence is indeed golden.

      I used to hang out with a friend, I tried my best to talk with her-never leaving a silent moment. I realize that maybe that wasn't the perfect approach, maybe I wasn't giving her space, maybe it's just better that I hang out with her without needing to talk all the time. After all, she has other friends, she's always active, maybe I should just give her the moment to slow down.

    A friend told me, being silence is better then to talk, cause in the end humans speak by their actions. He said that talking is just to create an exposure that u are present, but it could be a double edge sword if people don't see u as what they expected u to be. So better be silent, let yourself be pure from what people expected u to be, and let your action says to them about whom u really are.

    I am capable of being one of the most silent person in a group, principally listening and observing around. And afterwards, I feel a bit evasive, absent. What is the point of my presence if I am just here to listen ? And when I try to speak, it is not the same. I feel better in the silence. Which is bothering me.

      Theres a difference between silence out of discomfort and silence out of necessity. You just have to work on your self concept and confidence. Being silent out of necessity is comfort in your own silence and knowing when you add to the convo your words are important. I'm usually in my own world and people think im cool and mysterious lol. How you percieve yourself matters most, and know your presence is worthy enough despite not adding to the convo.

    Silence can sometimes be inhibiting. For people who observe, they usually remove themselves from a situation to see it from many angles which leaves them not experiencing life. Lack of experience can cause a loss of personality or identity. When you stay quiet for too long you forget what to say, when to say it, or even how to say things which can also impact you communication and interpersonal relationships.

      "Tacet" on sheet music indicates silence. ❤ Similar to pausing for emphasis in mid-sentence or after a statement, a silent pause in music gives the mind a moment to process and reflect before continuing into the next thought. I think of the song "An Innocent Man" by Billy Joel -- there is a dramatic although brief silence in the music. It gets your attention. Other highly talented singers and songwriters effectively use a brief silence in some of their songs. I believe it adds more emotional richness than filling the whole piece with instruments and vocals.

      Bad idea to keep silent when someone is verbally abusing you, yes you may embarass them at first but they might escalate. First you should keep at least the person two arms length away from you and second you should try to leave the place. Some people will consider your silence as a sign that they can dominate you or you being submissive or even that you are not taking them seriously and proceed to escalate and slap or punch you. These Narcissistic predators when they see you silent will equate it to a freeze response and failing to intimidate you verbally, will recourse to violence. The quote from Mark Twain reminded me of some of these Proverbs in the Bible. It is the source of much wisdom. Some historical people we think of as "wise" have quoted scriptural wisdom. Abraham Lincoln said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." This was not an original thought -- he was quoting something that Jesus said.

    People often try to fill the air when there is silence. They talk out of a fear of silence. When we become comfortable with silence, we only talk when are words will be of value-in line with how the Buddha described himself: "The ascetic Gotama has given up talking nonsense. His words are timely, true, and meaningful... He says things at the right time which are valuable, reasonable, succinct, and beneficial."

    often times I recently learned I love silence. I go to view spots, and take in the world. When I mention to other people to sit in silence for a while, they don't understand. When I go to a silent place, I tend to listen to the natural life around me. I love hearing the wind blow through the air. It makes me realize that life is more to it than just trying to better myself. The point of life is to enjoy every single moment we have, and when I'm at my silence spot, that's exactly what I love to do. I take in the moment, and enjoy it.

    Sometimes I feel like people just experience being afraid of death, because silence reminds them that there is no lively sound, i.e. silence is like a state of not experiencing life, hence fear arises. At the same time, there is something similar to it - being afraid of darkness. No light arises fear, no sound arises fear and uneasiness. There is something similar in all these two things. Ah, also forgot about lack of social activity. Fear of missing out. See? Three similar things have something in common. Illusion that is interpreted as lack of life flowing.

After practice I extended it for minutes and it changed my life.

However, the power of silence as an answer to tragedy is that we acknowledge that no amount of words do justice to what we seek to commemorate”

    Fantastic video! I’m a person who lives with complex post traumatic stress disorder. Silence has often be a harbinger of doom. I tend to fill my life with noise just to take the edge off of the insufferable silence. This video really helped me change my perspective on silence. It’s not something that needs to be endured like soaking in ice water but is rather a gift of the void. A moment of nothingness. It’s beautiful and powerful. I loved how you described silence at the end of the video “elusive yet accessible to all.” I’m going to try to reaclimate myself to being in silence in the future. • @ash8207
    @ash8207 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yes indeed, silence is truly powerful. But only in the proper context & under the correct circumstances. Silence, in the face of injustice, is cowardly & complicit with that injustice. And that violates the Stoic virtue of courage. Many weak-minded, craven people were silent & refused to speak out against terrible crimes out of fear & peer pressure throughout history. Think also about the wise American civil rights activist MLK Jr. & his courage to speak out & refuse to be silent. Would he have been successful if he kept silent? Was he a fool for speaking out? No, certainly not. So on this one, we have to think critically & not just narrow-mindedly believe that silence is always powerful, because the historical record shows clearly that sometimes it's the exact opposite. Still enjoyed the video but I wish these important nuances & gray areas would have been mentioned as well. Peace & health to all!
