I wasted my teenage years and my 20s always worrying about what other people think of me. Due to this, I've lost several opportunities in life that could have been transformational for me. I'm 33 now and I am not going to make those same mistakes again.
I misreaded it as "You are alone enough to have nothing to prove to anybody". Considering how I lived the pandemy, that made sense. In the current time, society are too broken and the tecnology and social media had isolated great amounts of people, and many of them are still trying to get aproval for complete strangers. Many people are alone enough they have nothing to prove to anybody, but they still trying to.
It’s easy to say “don’t care what other people think” but it’s a difficult balance, because on some level it benefits us to care, being as our world is formed by those around us and they directly impact our life. I think it’s more beneficial to care less about the majority and more about the opinion of those you deem worthy.

A quote I definitely needed to see. Thank you for posting, and thank you for those that up voted it too. While I've been dealing with stuff like this my whole life (like practically everyone), and I've been successful & being true to myself, I've felt myself faltering in my resolve which has made me a tad depressed the past few days. Feels like everything around you is trying to change you in some way. Sometimes the urge to just fit in is so great because being part of the collective is easier than standing alone. However when you realize that those in the collective will never truly accept you because of who you really are you begin to realize how alone you really are. That's something I'm trying to come to terms with. Sorry for the incoherent rant. Needed to get it out of my system.
For some reason my life has always been a constant struggle between wanting to be alone and becoming popular and social, it is a real struggle for me, I really do love the quiet life at the same time I love the thrill of observation and venturing into the unknown
Alex I’m 66 years old, I’ve seen the popular kids at school become total failures and some total successes. Instead of trying to be popular try to be witty, funny. That will exceed on the Social aspect. You speak well that’s why I respond.
I have read many philosophers, but, always, the one that stood out for me was Friedrich Nietzsche. Especially this quote: "And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music." The deeper you will go in life, the more you will encounter people who won’t understand your way of thinking. Keep doing what you do. Keep dancing and just let others think that you are insane. There is so much truth and beauty in this “insanity” of yours.

The best way to overcome the fear of what others think of you is realizing that you don't even control what you think, how can you possibly control what others think about you when you can't even control your own thoughts and feelings. After I realized that I literally spend zero time worrying about this. Thoughts about others will arise, observe them and move on that's all you can do. Perhaps but I love competing and destroying my opponents. It's one of the few pleasures in life. And people respect and admire those at the top and they despise those at the bottom. This is the problem with being an outsider, you need at least to find a group where you fit in.
We all have our own path, and that includes ways of getting there. If someone discourages you or doesn't show you support and it brings you down, their opinion should be like a brainstorm idea you throw in the trash.
If anger is a punishment you give yourself for something someone else did, then worrying about what others think must be a punishment you give yourself for something that doesn't really matter.
I'm glad that I mastered this a few years ago . I can say that I can now Express myself how I want without putting a mask and without pretending to be something else.
I was raised to be concerned about what others thought and found it to be so damaging in my own life that I choose to not pass that belief on to my children

I enjoy this type of dialogue. It also sheds light on why I do not have any other platforms such as Facebook Instagram tiktok and so forth. I do not need other people's approval of what I'm doing in life. My feeling to this is whenever you seek out approval from others /strangers on these types of platforms it weakens you as a person and your beliefs in not believing in yourself and feeling the fulfillment that you need from only self. You are adequate in how you feel and not needing others to be on board with you to feel complete or correct.
When you finally realize that what others think means absolutely nothing in terms of you and how you choose to live your life, it is what can truly liberate you. In fact, when the screw turns and you finally refuse to allow it to matter, you will say "How could I have ever lived like that." Other people can only affect you as much as you allow them to.
Indeed! People's thoughts about us based on what they perceive often doesn't align with reality, and so someone's opinions of you does not have to become your reality, unless those opinions are relevant to you!
I've tried many times and I've honestly came to the conclusion that you are who you are. You can't change your personality, there's much worse things than caring what people think anyway.
I use long term thinking into this problem, if I am not gonna be this person 10 years later and not gonna care about their opinion, then it also doesn't matter what they think of me now.
I recently got banned from a discord server for asking a question, everyone turned on me so fast and I really didnt use the server to be upset about being banned but what you said about herd mentality stuck out. I said something that the boss didnt agree with and then the herd singled me out and tried to use their power over me. But they have none, I was never in the server for approval from my peers, just to play videogames with like-minded people and I never even reached out to do that because it was a bother to begin with. They would only play 2K and CoD and chat was nothing but complaining about them whenever they weren't playing. Lol I’m an introvert, too. But my problem isn’t that I need to be liked; it’s that I fear being hated. I struggle with doing simple/repetitive tasks too slowly, being disorganized, being late, etc. It usually results in a lot of negative or venomous feedback. And the bitterness persists regardless of how apologetic I am or how much I try to improve, so caring less about others’ opinions would be really helpful 🫠

But when they see you don't live up to their expectations it's a crime. Like why would you want to be a copy and paste of something you are not. I'd rather do what I like than be a mindless sheep following the crowd. It really makes you think that all these persona's on social media is not the final result of that person. Agree. However in most instances when dealing with deceitful individuals lies and excuses are created in order to diminish another individual's character and credibility to present a false reason to keep them suppressed.
So what?? Even if that is true, its functions more as a a long way of rationalizing your lack of effort to change how you view others. I have dealt with different forms of judgements and prejudices throughout my life up to this day. I am now in the latter half of my life and single. I pursue what enriches my soul regardless of what others think. I completely agree with Nietche's philosophy of the master and servant dichotomy. I have transcended that dynamic since childhood. There is a small part of me that is uncomfortable, sad, and lonely about that, but there is a much greater part of me that is strong, happy, and free because of that.
Thank you for sharing this as it resonates to a degree. Being yourself without making others uncomfortable is possible, albeit within the space that modern society allows.
For me its hard to just "simply stop" overthinking what others may think of me. Yes it does drive me up a wall and give me awful anxiety. Yet thats where my mind goes. As I get older the less I think about other peoples judgements/opinions. Now that I’m 60, I just don’t give a damn. If you are a negative person feel free to give your precious time to someone else. I’m not interested and enjoy my own company. Little mind means little.
It's so empowering to hear that we can't control what's not in our limits we can only control our emotions and decide how we perceive and react on things.. The only place where you should give your attention is not outside you but inside you that only can serve you to the heights...
How you think about yourself and carry yourself is what other people think of you as well. Thus, why not just create and be the very best version of yourself and surround yourself with people with good and winning character? Makes sense right?
Healthy self-awareness and ability to take a joke are like among the most important traits people should have. Also I would much rather stay true to my own morals and opinions rather than bend them to please some random people. I would just feel bad for betraying myself.

And no reason not to share it with those who might be enlightened and pleasured.
Does she live by herself on a deserted island?
I misreaded it as "You are alone enough to have nothing to prove to anybody". Considering how I lived the pandemy, that made sense. In the current time, society are too broken and the tecnology and social media had isolated great amounts of people, and many of them are still trying to get aproval for complete strangers. Many people are alone enough they have nothing to prove to anybody, but they still trying to.
You have something to prove because the burden of performance is on you and as a man you have to show results
It’s easy to say “don’t care what other people think” but it’s a difficult balance, because on some level it benefits us to care, being as our world is formed by those around us and they directly impact our life. I think it’s more beneficial to care less about the majority and more about the opinion of those you deem worthy.
