It’s our fault, we pander to these companies. We need to purchase only from companies who treat everyone with respect. Policies would quickly change if their stores emptied.

It’s the nightclub mentality. The more they treat you like dirt, the more exclusive it feels, and the more you want it. Nobody lines up for the club that lets anyone in.

For real. This is a bit too much. If I have the money to purchase the specific product that I want, that should be it. This kind of behaviour from luxury stores is the reason why I primarily make online purchases.

Our personal data is everywhere. Your dry cleaner likely has your address (and knows what brands you wear). Your doctor’s office has your address. Your gym has your address. Bad actors at those places can figure out your approximate income - and when you are not going to be home. I am not saying this is okay. But we live in the world where it is very easy to find information about someone and take advantage of it.

I work for a luxury retailer as a sales associate and part of our performance metric is getting the customer's full address, email address etc. They are then placed in "tier" groupings. Every month management gives us a rating of how many transactions we processed with/without client's detailed information. I do not blame clients who decline as it is such an invasion of privacy!!

I honestly think it should be illegal for employees to look up customer's home addresses. We provide them that information for billing, shipping and verification. Not so they can go on virtual house tours. For all we know, they might not be breaking into people's homes themselves, but they sure could tip off other people to do it. It's like people who get followed home outside of banks. I have a high suspicion that some bank tellers are telling people who to rob and it's scary.

My new beauty SA at a luxury shop asked for my address to ship me an item yesterday. Obviously she would need that, but when she asked I did wonder, would they look up my home? I agree with other comments, some people purchase a humble home and have loads in the bank, while some with “fancy” homes are house poor - you just can’t accurately assess. …. Invite and give attention to the clients who are coming in, making purchases, and treating associates with respect. This information is gross.

So do I now say I’m a person of leisure, retired, domestic engineer etc., it’s ludicrous. It’s no one’s beeswax what I have in superannuation / bank, etc. Purchased a home 18 kms from the CBD @ the time people said it’s too far & now classed as “inner metro”, how old are these store managers & what life experience do they have? Blows my mind isn’t money the same value for everyone where luxury is concerned⁉️ Food for thought perhaps? Great vlog TVM. Best wishes from Adelaide; South Australia🇦🇺💐

You hit the nail on the head regarding safety - this is something that I’ve ALWAYS been paranoid about. Like any SA or staff can get info on their clients about where they live. I wouldn’t think of this with my regular SA, but moreso with an SA I infrequently purchase from.
With growing safety concerns, perhaps we should keep our billing address different from our home address.
I was in one of the Hawaii stores while on a multi city trip in the US in 2022 when Chanel implemented stricter purchasing limits for bags and SLGs. When I raised this with the SA when I wanted to purchase my belt bag, he said that I didn’t have to complete my profile. I wasn’t obligated to give a phone number or a last name even! He said Americans often don’t want to give personal info and some object to it. I actually witnessed this in Las Vegas - a young woman retorted to an SA that she isn’t obligated to give any personal info to make a purchase. I was in awe! Lol
And yes, I’ve also had a door mat and chair stolen from our front porch. I need to move out of the city lol.

That's disgusting... I recently had an issue with a Coach store where they blamed me for a 1 week old bag being defective and told me I put white powder in it, also implied when I came in for an exchange that I was trying to steal another bag (a SA) took the bag I had on hold from me to "see it" and never returned it to me... The manager never helped me, nor did the store manager call me the next day... I ended up having to call corporate and 2 weeks in they were able to help me and apologize

Well im the one who is working class. Single no burden
    i have
2 houses , 3 apartment and 2 buildings from my parents in home country. Yes i save up or pay monthly for my fashion item. It's art and art is in my heart from music , my room decoration to my outfit. I drive cheap used car and my SA is still very nice to me. She help me carry my Celine's cloth to my car once. My boss is a lot richer than me. She wear fast fashion because it's cheap. She won't buy designer stuff but own stock and 3 branches of restaurants. She bought 1 nice house in town and 1 in camel. Also, she donates a lot every year. SA can't make sell to some rich or very rich people because they just don't care about fashion. The one i know they bought a land on hill and a plane. No single piece of pricy bag just cheap clothes.
If they only judge people just from the look or houses. They lose customer.

This has been going on even before internet. My aunt has a retail business when i was growing up and after they left she and my mom would talk about what they get from the chat and ascertain what kind of customer she was. If they get certain products that they believe fit this person they call her first. It's just business strategy. You can google almost everything now and i think this strategy has been used in ages. Discrimation will always be the cry of the ' feeling victimized' when it is just profiling. If you own the business you'll learn you need to make profit. What else but charity if you just gave it to anybody.

Hey Dacob! 🤩 thank you for that topic! 👏🏽👏🏽 There are some ways to keep our privacy. If we don’t want to share our private e-mail we can make special one for shopping only. For address if we have concerns about home address and have a business or friend with business we can always get delivery to that place. In my homeland another way is to rent mailbox in the post office. Not sure if this works for bigger parcels 📦 or letters only. If you are too chatty and SA knows all about you from your address to holidays plans you may became an easy target if they are connected to criminal groups. If they ask you what you do for a living no need to give them answer, you can use some manipulation technics to make them feel uncomfortable even asking that question - you can repeat „what I do for a living?” then look in their eyes and just smile or you can change the subject/you can say crap like you are professional hedonist, mother, wife whatever. Being mysterious not equal being rude. We have all right to keep our privacy and giving answer about personal life is up to us!

I am not sure what is so surprising about this.
High-end restaurants habitually look up customers online when they make reservations. Waiters at those restaurants study watches and jewelry to see if they can offer the really expensive bottles of wine to their guests. I read a memoir of a lady who was a sommelier at Marea in NYC and she goes into great detail about this. Good corporate salespeople take notes on their contacts family, hobbies, kid’s activities, so they can connect to the customers - and sell more. Your realtor will absolutely look you up online, including your current address and your LinkedIn profile.
I am curious if this is a company-encouraged behavior or an individual employee taking an initiative.
I do think this strategy is short-sighted for all the obvious reasons: people’s houses and jobs are not reflective of their ability (and willingness) to spend on luxury. People’s fortunes change.

During Quasi lockdown our boutique had curbside pickup and my boss always had me run the parcels out to the clients cars. Many of our clients had porches and Bentleys. And I will tell you. Most of those clients were not our biggest spenders. I can't judge the size or zip code as indication to what one is willing to spend on fashion. Also in Las Vegas a lot of home robberies are traced back to connections with house cleaning services. More than a store associate. House cleaning services tend to not have deep back ground checks and high employee turnover. And the house cleaners know every detail of the home and can take pictures. Sadly some of these home invasions ended in death. Vegas is good at keeping it's skeletons in it's closet. Sadly someone was unalived for a Chanel 19. Tragic.

I am wondering if such behavior is encouraged by those brands or is it "just" this specific individual personality "trait"? If the latter luxury brands should be more selective during their hiring process, but if it's their policies then damn... That's some nasty, smelly swamp.

I hate when they ask for personal info at checkout. Before they even say 'hi'...can I get your email? No. Can I get your phone number? No (except for Petco, CVS, and the beauty supplies I go to), I LIKE them. One saleslady got snooty and aggresive with me to give it. You have no idea how much I wanted to pull her tongue out of her mouth, and let it snap back and roll around. Like in the cartoons! Yeah.

By the way, Tiffany is exactly the same. They check your record of purchases before they do you a favor!!!!! I bought a pair of earrings from the New York store because my local Miami store did not have them. One earring didn’t close properly. I took them to the Miami location and they told me that since it was past a month (6 weeks) they couldn’t do an exchange, but they had a little conference in the back and checked my account, came back out and said no problem.

Loro Piana "finished"? No way, Dear Dacob! LP existed long before TikTok, and it will be around for a long time to come . Those who wear the brand will quietly continue to do so. That's the ENTIRE point. They'll also be more than happy to see the trend fly right past them.
As for customer profiling, anyone can get info on anyone else these days. There is no privacy. I never ask anyone what they do for a living. I wait for them to tell me. If a sales associate asks me what I do, I tell them that I am self employed. If you have a professional, but slightly crisp tone, they'll usually let it go at that. Something about me doesn't encourage them to get too familiar.

Well, does that shock me? Unfortunately not. When I worked in the luxury industry, I met a jeweller who secretly rated all his female contacts 1-3 and a-c for money and looks. So a 1a would be a rich and gorg woman, while a 3c would be one who couldn't afford his pieces and was not attractive to him. He based his interactions off that "metric". (Didn't rate men though.) I mean I understand the value of "profiling" your customer base but you can be professional and purposeful about it, or you can be a douche.

Goes to show you who the target audience for these purchases really is. If you’re really wealthy, odds are your address aren’t in the public domain because you purchase your homes under an llc or other entity to obscure your identity. Or you have a stylist purchase your items for you. I have never and will never shop at these tacky brands

  • @KStyleLuxe

Yuck. It’s awful to hear the classist insider info, but these brands are casing us as soon as we step into the store based on what we are wearing and who we are with. I tend to get more attentive service if my husband is with me. Sad, as I am the one paying. That’s a whole nother topic. Sometimes I avoid the shenanigans by just buying from the brands online. But buying online can come with its own set of shenanigans. It can be nerve wracking returning the bags, for example. I do think you have more anonymity buying online though. I do love the in store experience, though.
