I have worked for Hermès. You said everything. Totally true and totally agree. The company struggle to find the same volume of leather with the same quality. Hermès is pushing to feed cows with organic food. But they are alone. Nobody in the rest of industry push on that direction because Chanel, LVMH, Kering, Richemont, Prada … they don't care.
People think Hermès is organising the scarcity.. reality is that they can’t find as much as good leather than before and they are not able to train more than 300/400 artisans by year for leather goods. If they do more, the quality will inevitably decrease. And they refuse to do that.

I went to Chanel on Christmas & everything the SA showed me was fake-looking, not lux feeling and some flaps were wonky! I was taken aback with the bad quality 😢 the lambskin felt plasticky- like a fake leather toiletry pouch.

Interesting you should say that... Some time ago I was watching a TH-cam video where an influencer went shopping to a Chanel boutique (I honestly don't remember who that was) and filmed her shopping trip there. I was taken aback when she showed the bag displays. Like you said - many of them just looked wonky. My first thought was that they looked like obvious fakes. I wonder... is it at all possible that they actually do put out fakes on the displays, considering the increasing thefts? Maybe what I said is completely dumb, but... it is just so hard to believe they would have such poor looking stuff out on display.

@@margaret9185 I got them to take out a few bags I wanted to see from storage - they had one mini flap bag which came out with a wonky flap and another small caviar classic flap which looked & felt like a fake. I doubt they would show fake bags if their objective was to sell them, right? Because I was not impressed & didn’t buy anything. The flap corners on the WOCs were curving slightly upwards like old carpet corners 🤦🏻‍♀️

There is a huge difference between organic, grass-fed and intensively farmed, grain-fed and antibiotic filled beef. Same for free range vs intensively farmed chicken and pork.
For my Masters degree I fractured and scanned pig femurs (don’t ask!), that I acquired from a butcher. The bones I tried first were no good. They were too small and weak and bent rather than fractured. They were intensively farmed and went to slaughter at a younger age as they reached the appropriate weight quicker. The organically farmed pig bones were so different. If the bones differ I can absolutely believe the hides are different. Really interesting Dacob, thanks for sharing.

Maybe its similar to the cowhide , if these aninals were fed natural foods without chemicals maybe they will produce good leather. Just my 2 cents. Happy new year everyone❤

Dacob, thank you for your thoughtful and very informative video. I learned a lot. Plus, the discussion took my brain in many different directions. Including childhood memories of when my dad owned a leather goods shop in Rosarito Beach.
We would go to the peleteria in Tijuana, and there were rolls and rolls of leather pelts all stacked on shelves and tables. Tanned and untanned leathers, dyed leathers and suedes. Leather glues, stamping tools, leather paints, and brass hardware, and a scraps table. The leather smell of the shop was glorious. All the leather quality talk took me back to that. Thank you! To this day when I buy a bag, the first thing I wanna do is inhale the leather scent! Great video! You look smart and polished with your camellia!

I was recently at a department store and I asked if they only had the display floor model in stock or a new one in the back and I was told in a condescending tone that they don't sell any display bags and that all the floor models are brand new untouched new bags. So interesting…..D,on another note watched a Victoria and Albert museum review of a 1964 Chanel couture suit with matching hat/handbag.When the curator explained the concept behind the bag she obviously opened it to show the internal structure and a detail leapt out that shook me.Inside from that era was the intertwined double C that we have all been told was Lagerfeld. Can this be true?❤️❤️

I have watched that video too. Beautiful ensemble in the museum collection. Karl did not invent the double C. Whoever says that is terribly ill informed. I do not doubt about leather quality but watch out for SAs. It was weird that she showed me the bag in a rush and sent me home. She never checks quality of bag with me. My SA sold me a used returned birkin and I had to wait 6 months to repair in Paris. I found out when I got home. I took pictures and sent to SA. They only gave me two options refund or repair. As you know Hermes do not have a exchange option for the bags they always say no guarantee. 😅I stopped shopping with my SA who worked with me for 3 years. I lost sincerity in her.

@@SuperDacob You are right!! They abuse power over the customers. As you know for the bags, they never promise exchange for the defective bags. At first, I asked for exchange and said I can wait until they get shipment but my SA told me no guarantee. so I decided to repair it because I thought the SA will not put me as a priority offer me a new same bag and if I go for repairing, the bag is still mine. Having a repair is better than no bag. They only gave me two options refund or repair.🤬 I will not shop with someone who is unprofessional. There were severe scratches under the original stickers on hardwares, discoloration( brown) on the corner and solis and hairs in the rain cover, clochette was out side of pouch when she showed me a bag, no brown paper wrapping, no gloves on etc. I cannot explain very detail because I want to keep it anonymously.😅 but I just wanted to share my recent experience.

When I graduate in 2008 from university, my mum told me Chanel’s quality has decline, she has several Chanel lambskin that’s same age as me which retains its buttery texture, she told me not to buy it back in 2008 😂 see where we are in now in 2024 😂😂😂 when we said it’s quality has decline lol but now in my thirties I really find Chanel despicable in terms of quality and marketing and pricing, there’s no class with it now in my opinion so I refuse to support everything from them ranging from makeup perfume to bag. For Hermes, the design may not be the chicest in lux brands but the quality and pricing are not too far apart. One thing I have to disagree with you tho despite they don’t hv as much price increment as other brands during and post covid, they hv raised their spending quota for their bag more than a double lol so in a sense I would not agree they are less culpable as other brands when it comes to pricing strategy 😂

No other companies complain about a leather shortage and they use a whole lot more leather than Hermes. Hermes can't make good leather because of new sustainable leather processing? Nah fam, Hermes doesn't have this huge leather R&D program that's on the cutting edge of leather production. Coach can put out decent leather at a much lower price point. I'll never go vegan (so don't worry, I'll eat the meat to supply your leather 😉) but even with me eating the meat, it's not nearly as nutritious as it used to be because of all of the chemicals and tampering with the animals. @@SuperDacob the commish or the cult? Come in my daaaaarling? She was genuinely curious and for someone like me who's been whoring herself out in entertainment industry since I was 14 and also nerodivergent and also a person who was whoring her personality for years. It was only until I pulled my hair back and than showed her she was genuinely stunned. I loved the attention tho but I just wanted to see the testic.... I mean ball covered tree 🤣 the clothes on the rack (all the denim stuff from summer) was weird to see in winter. Baby I'll protect YOUR commish tho wegowegoo?? 🤣

I totally agree with you. I started buying luxury in the 2000s … and I can completely see a difference. It’s true, how sad that luxury is becoming this way. Hermes is better for sure. The pieces I have from them are nearly perfect and I don’t worry about quality issues… and if there is one, they TAKE CARE OF YOU period. I think the most inconsistent of the big 3 is LV. Even made in USA Vs made in France is such a huge difffernece in quality and even resale price. I aesthetically love chanel. My fave bag is the chanel classic flap even over the kelly. I forget that the new generation has no comparison. That’s a very good point. So to them there is no poor quality…. It’s almost laughable … great observation! And they are the group that probably keeps buying in large quantities at the moment.
Quality, Hermes. Aesthetics, chanel. Practicality, LV.

      Can't agree more.
Speaking of the new generation, I try to educate my daughter about these things. Dacob's videos are quite helpful in that regard because they get to the heart of the matter.

True i started buying in 2000s Tom Ford for Gucci was very first purchase i know can see huge difference in that brand then to now. The experience across the board in stores is much lower then it used to be the S.As aren’t long term and passionate about the brands or heritage. It’s disappointing and found myself leaning into smaller bespoke brands they are IKYK

So true. Us ladies w a 4 handle remember the Chanel of 2005 and the insane quality - back when $4k was crazy for a bag!

Hi Dacob! I was wondering if you heard about the affordable Givenchy jewelry line being sold exclusively at Macy’s? Totally different than the jewelry sold on the official Givenchy website! Thought it might be an interesting video topic!

The vachetta on my speedy has stripes with cut in it. When I mentioned this to LV they said it was not considered a flaw. For someone with OCD tendency, Hermes is the best due to higher degree of perfection.

I have trained as a custom saddle maker, the thing with hides is that the different parts of the hide have very different properties. For example: the strongest, thickest, most stable leather comes from the back, the thinnest most flexible leather comes from the knee and elbow parts. We used to buy half hides so we could use those parts of the hide for those saddle parts or leather projects which needed these certain properties. Cheap saddles are made by cutting up hides anyway they can get the most out of it.
Not all parts of the hide can be used for a bag if you want to make the best most reliable bag.

Has something recently happened to the quality of Chanel perfumes?? I just got a new bottle of Coco Mademoiselle for Christmas, and it smells.... different, and I have been wearing Coco Mademoiselle for years and years. Maybe I got a bad batch lol but I have never encountered this before. The perfume of course still smells lovely, but it almost smells like a completely different perfume lol!

I am new to your channel and love your realistic, humane and appreciative approach. I would love to know what you think of some of the houses like Ferragamo, Cucinelli etc. in terms of their quality and ability to make it through this meltdown period.
