A viewer named Will has pointed out that Camp Chef now offers a larger cover which allows it to be covered without collapsing the shelves. This is nice to know as it will help with the issue I described in the video.

Only additional thing that might be worth mentioning is Camp Chef has a portable version of the 600 flattop model as well that has folding legs. But that model does not have the grill grates to be able to use it as a regular gas grill.

I would think that the wind guards on the camp chef would be another reason it could run a little hotter than the blackstone.

Great video. I’m partial to Blackstone myself. Never tried the others personally seeing the reviews is interesting, but actually using them is the difference. I worked with flattop griddles in the military for 20+ years. I’ve made more omelettes than I care to remember. Blackstone has come a long way and have so many models and accessories it’s hard to keep up. Thanks for the video.

I bought a “36 Blackstone today after weeks of reading about all of the options. I would have gone with the Pit-Boss Ultimate but am not yet sold on a ceramic cooktop. A big reason for choosing the Blackstone is it is what I could find locally. I wanted to buy something and have it delivered and assembled by a local shop. I didn’t see enough advantages with the Camp Chef to warrant going out of my way to find one. Both the Camp Chef and Blackstones seem like great choices.
I opted against the Blackstone with the air fryer because I’m not yet convinced about Blackstone’s reliability and longevity. I’d rather start out with as few things to break as possible. I can always upgrade later.
Looking forward to catching more of your videos as I start on my flat top journey.

      How's it holding up?

    • @1_lens_view
      @1_lens_view 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@phantomcreamer Fine. I haven’t used it a lot this summer because it just isn’t fun to use when its 100F outside.
I keep the Blackstone outside but under a covered area. It stays mostly dry during even the heaviest rainstorms. There’s a little surface rust showing up on the chrome leg lock from humidity or whatever rain does manage to hit it. I need to clean it off and remember to hit it with a little oil spray or something to keep it from rusting further. I wish Blackstone would have used all stainless hardware. Otherwise, no issues.
The cooktop itself is working out fine. I had some spots of rust form where my seasoning job wasn’t maybe as good as it should have been. I just used a cheap pumice stick I had on hand to clean the spots and re-oiled them. These areas look a little patchy right now but work just fine.
As an aside, I no longer use the fabric grill cover. Rodents would get in underneath and climb up on to the cooktop. When I leave the fabric cover off, no rodent problem.
The only other thing I would say is I didn’t need to buy a 4-burner model. It takes up more room than I would like. If I had to do it over again, I would buy a 3- or maybe even 2-burner unit. I still prefer to use my Egg for most cooks.

Good video. Last year I went Camp Chef over Blackstone because most reviews I read complained about the wind blowing out the burners, and lack of customer support. I guess they do like the walmart client better. I did have an issue with my camp chef upon arrival. I called Camp Chef and they sent out a replacement part and a few accessories for free. They have earned my business going forward. After a year of cooking on it I haven't experienced any problems.

Like you mentioned it doesn't have as much space as other brands but absolutely love being able to grill as well as do pancakes and bacon. So putting a pan on the griddle would lose alot of cooking area. What I should've said is I want camp chef to redesign a 600 series' with a high btu side burner so I can fry fish or french fries and still have my grill/griddle. Thanks for the reply! Camp chef needs to redesign ASAP!

Love my Camp Chef FTG600, I tossed the cart and built an outdoor kitchen around it. Picked it up at BJs years ago for I believe $180. My only experience with Blackstone is my tailgating griddle and I don't love it, flames-out way too easily. I am however interested in their electric ceramic-coated griddle.

I just did a review on the electronic series. It’s on my channel.

  • @bigbuckeyes
    @bigbuckeyes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I've been exploring getting a flat top over the last few years. Initially looking at one of those on-the-stove attachments. But since then I've gotten a house that (unfortunately) has an electric stovetop, and I wouldn't feel as great about getting that attachment.
So since I put that on hold i've gotten into smoking and have a grill as well, so the next move is a flat top griddle. And since i'm the type of guy who researches until I feel like I can't learn any more, your videos have been great.
Seems like the camp chef grease trap/cover issue is particularly annoying, but its good to read in the comments that a large cover can be purchased. Meanwhile, I like how the models now have individually controlled burners, not having that would be frustrating IMO.
I do wish you had an infrared thermometer and could show us how hot the different zones get, and how warm the areas between the zones are. But I do trust your judgement that the difference isn't really anything to base the decision on.
So it seems like really it comes down to budget and needed workspace, as the blackstone can be easily moded to minimize the wind issues. And at this time at least, the blackstone 36 is $250 cheaper than the camp chef 600 (I already have a convection oven, don't need an outdoor one, nor do I really need the deep fryer blackstone either). But that price is only available at walmart, other vendors its much more comparable in price.
I don't think I have any real questions, besides whether you have a video showing what sorts of accessories you use for your flat top?

One of your best videos ever. Great breakdown and comparison between these two excellent griddles. That said, neither one is a standout runaway winner. They both have pluses and minuses. I think Blackstone did a bit more homework from both an engineering and marketing standpoint then Camp Chef. Camp Chef really needs to step it up on a few fronts, so it’s their turn. Competition is a good thing for the consumer. I think that both companies can execute improvements and features quicker, which would help. Example, Camp Chef still doesn’t offer a hard cover, preferably a hinged version. Also, a cover that you can put on with the table wings up. Both companies can make their carts a bit more sturdy and should making models with an enclosed bottom with doors and or drawers. A glaring miss by Camp Chef in their offerings, which are too few, IMHO. OVERALL, I agree with you Mike. Both will give you excellent results, but they need to shorten improvement cycles and new product rollout better. Warping is also still a concern for many. Great video, Mike. I really enjoyed it. Sorry to hear about losing both Mom and Dad. I’m sure that was a difficult time for you and your family. Look forward to seeing more from you in the near future. I’ve been out of the loop a lot over the last year myself. Take care and best wishes, Mike.

This almost had me doubting my camp chef purchase after watching this… and it’s a great review, I just don’t think it’s comparing apples to apples. If you look at todays standard 4 burner blackstone griddle, I think the camp chef is still better. But if you look at the pro griddle with the air fryers and cover? I’d take that one for sure! It’s also $1k right now…. So there’s that.

Nice job! I really enjoy your videos and appreciate a regular Midwest guy making a mark on TH-cam (I'm in Minnesota). Sorry to hear about your Mom and Dad. I went CC for my pellet smoker (Woodwind 24" with sidekick) and Blackstone for my flat top. I love them both. I think you're right in that you can't go wrong with either company. My main comment is to make comparisons apples to apples (I get that Blackstone sent you the air fryer model and so that's what you used for the comparison). In this case that would the CC flat top grill 600 and the Blackstone 36" cooking station (no air fryer). This Blackstone comes with paper towel holder, garbage bag hooks, a removable cutting board that slots into a shelf and four wheels -- the CC has none of these features. The Blackstone has 720 square inches of cooking space versus 600 for the CC and, as you might imagine, more BTUs (60,000) to cover the larger space (CC has 48,000 for smaller area). I'm NOT a creator so I have probably a different need in terms of customer service, but I've found customer service for both companies being solid and responsive, although I've had reason to interact with CC far more because of various issues with their product than I have with Blackstone. Both have extensive social media presence, recipes and communities. The CC Facebook group is particularly outstanding! Finally, if price is important, and let's face it, it is, I checked today and the CC comes in at $549.99 on their website (CC offers a 10% discount to a returning customer, so my price would be $494.99) and the Blackstone on Amazon was $399.99. Anyway, thanks again for the videos, keep up the good work. Happy griddling and Happy Holidays.

That is almost entirely up to how well each is maintained. A lot of people do not properly clean and season after each cook. If you do, they are both good. I’d guess the top on the Blackstone might be slightly better quality in extreme situations but honestly it’s all about the maintenance.

I would just use a small cork as a bung for the drip hole. You can pick them up at hobby stores and I've seen them at dollar stores occasionally as well. You could also fashion one from a wine cork for free. Use the top shelf as a "heat lamp". If you're doing large amounts of food in batches, put each batch in a heat resistant tray/dish and keep it hot but not cooking, as you continue with your other dishes.

In your previous video you favored Camp Chef but now it seems like you are a Blackstone fan. If you could change the Camp Chef flat top what would you change to make it the ultimate flat top?

I would make an in between size (600-900), I’d upgrade the griddle top, I’d change the grease system, I’d lower the shelf below the cooker, I’d add an attached lid. Pretty sure that’s it. I’m pretty sure they’re working on a new model but don’t quote me on that.

Cover, grease drip system, larger cooking surface, all give Blackstone the edge.

So you’re a Blackstone owner justifying your purchase. Good choice. Cheers 🍻

I feel the location of the grease cup on the Camp Chef is an accident about to happen.

It’s really been fine. My only gripe is with the cover issue that I mentioned. Outside of that it hasn’t leaked or caused any problems.

We were at a barbecue competition recently. A team next to us had a Blackstone griddle, it was a windy day. Several times the wind blew out the fire, we smelled the propane blowing over to us.

I don’t remember off hand. Perhaps another viewer will know or check the manufactures website.

Very thural comparison Mike. I don't even own a large cooktop like either of these, but really enjoyed hearing the differences. How are you liking the Rode wireless Go 2 mic setup? I just recently started using them. Love the audio backup feature on them. Your sounds is really good!

Thanks Mike, appreciate your time and work on these comparisons, being a taller guy height matters to me too! I lean to the camp chef but all i see locally is the blackstones, gonna cave in and buy one soon though!

I DO feel like camp chef may have better customer service and in a way that means alot to me too, i wish the FTG600 came with a hood though.

What ? No grilled cheese after the initial bacon cook? A wise man told me to do that ! “ Expert Put er together guy” is that a technical term ? Great comparison Mike ! Very informative! I have buddies with Camp Chef and Pit Boss griddles, hell , I seasoned them for them. You know I love my Blackstones ! I do wish Blackstone would have a leveling option.

I picked up a 28" ProSeries Blackstone and it's been a piece of crap. Igniter went out on my 2nd cook and it's been taking them forever to send a replacement. Even then it was like pulling teeth to get them to honor their warranty. Temps have been super uneven throughout the cook top, this is probably an issue with the H burner design and being a 2-burner. It's also not usable without wind guards if you have any breeze at all. I'm still within the return window for the blackstone and may just end up getting a Camp Chef griddle. Have you looked into the Grilla Primate griddle/grill? It's a lot more expensive, but it also seems like the perfect griddle.
