Disagree. 454s are plentiful. A gen 6 454 will give a modern valvetrain and you can still use a carb with it if you want to keep it retro.
Btw I doubt this is a 396 despite what it says on the label, it's most likely a 402. Chevy changed it around 69-71 ish. They were marketed as 396s but they had 402 ci.

Works just fine as "the EYETALIONE TUNEUP"😊 You guys absolutely have to freshen up that 396 and keep running the camper, you just have such joy on your face when driving it, even knowing there is a problem. Several tips I learned way back. When starting anything that has a thread, turn it backwards until you feel it fall down into the first thread. Some times you can actually hear it drop in. Do this for every nut bolt or screw and you will never cross threads which is usually what strips threads out. If you struggle with starting bolts on an exhaust header or manifold usually the issue is the weight pulling the lower part towards the block. Grab a pry bar or broom handle and use that to twist the whole thing bottom side towards the wheel to tilt the top where your bolt holes line up better.
Second pull one wire off the distributor cap and then move each one one post to the right. After you do that you will be able to rotate the whole distributor clockwise to get it back into time and allow more balanced movement both clockwise and counter clock wise to tune it. No more hitting the intake. If the vacuum is too close to the fire wall do the same thing the other way. That way you can get it to run and have time later to remove and reset the distributor properly.
Finally you are not supposed to put any sealer on those aluminum header gaskets. Flat side to the block, dotted puffy side to the header.
Good luck and safe travels on your road trip

If mpg is no problem for you two, rebuild the 396. Maybe put a Gear Vendors overdrive unit in it for some better mileage. If you want even better mpg and power, go LS or diesel and some kind of transmission with overdrive. It's yours. You know how far away from home you want to travel with it. The choice is intimately yours, regardless of what the fans think. I like original with overdrive, but I understand it's old, outdated technology if you want to travel a lot,and far. Great video. It is old truck so give it some love and pressure wash the rear end pumpkin and remove cover and check the gears and new gasket with new rear end oil. An while you did that I'd replace all break lines and redo the pistons in breaks, and new shoes all around. The radiator needs clean and fix the leak. You don't want to miss the engines cooling system at all. I miss my old 1965 and 1970 Chevy half tons. I think the 396 would be cool to rebuild, if you're planning on keeping it on mostly flat ground. If your plans include mountains, a diesel would handle those better. Been watching since the KID was really little. The music interludes were really nice. Good move.

Sound is good. Glad to see Aaron is doing well. Lindsey did a great job on your hair for the shoot. My vote is rebuild the 396. Stay safe, God Bless.

Emily, never apologize for behaving like a professional. That's the ethic more people need to maintain, IMHO. Regarding the engine, I'd just pull it out with the intent to do a refresh. If you find something catastrophically wrong, then look at a swap. It's an RV, not a drag car, and should have plenty of power for what you will use it for. I might consider an overdrive box or replacement transmission to give you a lower top end RPM when cruising on the highway, but I'd keep it as original as possible. Have fun!

“Right down the YAP”. I think you should do a total rebuild of the 396. Keep her original. Great content. Blessings.

Nice video. But there was a little mixup in the timeline. At 3:59 when you are about to start working on the car suddenly the brake cylinder is open. But you start working on the engine/ignition. Later in the video you start to work on the brake system and because it is not working you open the main brake cylinder. 😊. Love these old cars. Just big simple stuff that is made to run. And not all this modern stuff full of plastic and sensors and servo's and other stuff to make the engine run cleaner but make it also very very very expensive because all that stuff will break and does cost a fortune.

When I learned to check the exhaust pipe for bad valve indications I was shown to hold a clean shop rag rather tight near the pipe, it's easier to see the fabric actually get sucked into the pipe ..it goes momentarily concave in an unmistakable manner 😮

Glad the ol RV truck got home without the hook! I think rebuilding the 396 would be awesome, but do what y’all feel like you want!

I'd defiantly keep it old school with a 396. A fresh rebuild with a Holley Sniper conversion would be sweet!!

So glad you could smell the burn! I restored a 21 passenger that the muffler did the same thing... but the driver didn't smell anything until the fire burnt through the floor. Later he did admit that there were a few really nice people that were waving at him... why not shoot a 396 rebuild !

I am a huge believer in Sea Foam…there is a process that has you suck it through a vacuum line until the engine stops and then let it soak for a period of time (30-60 minutes) and than restart engine…it will smoke out the neighborhood as it burns of all the loosened up deposits…always a believer when you find and application and it works 😊

First off that step repair going inside of the RV I would have added a middle bracing so the floor does not sag when getting into it.
Second rebuild the 396, then add a different transmission with overdrive on it.
Then put a TBI fuel injection swap on it, this would help put a little more power and some mpg to it too.
If and when you decide to rebuild the RV part that would be a nice project to see you both tackle.
I wish I had that truck and thats probably what I would do to to refresh it up

I learned on drum brakes is to bleed them into a bottle, let the bubbles percolate into another bottle while pumping.

Emily, that is an old school bigblock, built before gm reduced the nickle content of it's steel. Bolts dont break and holes don't strip like the new motors do. As for the seafoam, your feller you-tuber "pours Berryman's down the Yap". He calls it an italien tune up.
