Your bit about meeting friends with private sales is so true. I become long friends with some of the guys I have bought from and sold to. Sometimes we spend hours talking bikes before we even get to the sale at hand lol
Exactly. Nearly every friend I have that I'm close with in San Diego has been somehow related to the motorcycles.
I had one just like the one in this video. Gold wings are perfect. I admit that right off the top. Not so much if you’re over 6 feet tall, and you have to accept the fact that they get low 30s for gas mileage.
I lived with my Goldwing for two years. I bought it used with 13,000 miles on it from the original owner. I did the basic maintenance myself, I was a motorcycle mechanic at several different dealerships at one time. If you don’t do your own work, your goldwing will either being neglected or it will cost you a lot of money to have simple things done.
example, six hours is what the dealer charges you to change the air cleaner. Labor is $125 an hour the last time I checked..
I thought that was absurd to charge that much to change the air cleaner. So I did it myself. ..After doing the job,That is not an unreasonable time to be charged to change that air cleaner. That thing is so buried in that machine.. six hours is about right just to change the air cleaner.
I upgraded the fork springs and rear shock spring on my Goldwing. The fork springs were not too tough, I changed the oil, seals, bushings, and dust wipers while I had the forks apart. Fairly straightforward..but to get the rear shock absorber off to change the spring so the suspension spring rates would be evenly matched to each other front to rear,Here’s what I had to do using the 2 inch thick Honda service manual to guide me..
remove the instrument plastic cover on the dashboard, including the speaker covers..remove parts of the panels of the fairing in front of your shins, lots of little screws mostly different sizes don’t mix them up. Remove the cover over the engine that looks like the gas tank. To remove that you have to have the seat off. You have to remove parts of the fairing on the lower sides of the machine. You have to remove the fuse box, battery, Voltage regulator,battery , battery tray, fuel tank support beam, now you can remove the fuel tank. It looks like a little coffin. It holds 7 gallons. It is low in the frame. You have to disconnect those high-pressure fuel lines and electrical connections. You have to turn the fuel tank a certain way to get it out, so it better be practically empty..
once you get the fuel tank removed, you now have access to the top bolt on the rear shock so that you can remove the shock to upgrade to a different spring. That took me seven hours using the Honda factory service manual as my guide.. having that done at the dealer after paying for the spring to be installed on the shock, that’s easily over $1000… just changing the air filter is over $700, plus parts.
I tried to fall in love with my yellow Goldwing for two years. After doing the upgrades to the suspension, changing the air cleaner, changing the clutch fluid, the brake fluid, putting on new Dunlop elite four tires, new fork springs/seals/bushings/dust wipers… all the fluids were changed..
after I did all of that regular maintenance work. After becoming intimately accustomed to what it takes to work on a gold wing, I sold it and I went back to a Yamaha royal star venture. I actually have a video on TH-cam “Goldwing or venture” is the title. And I explain things like this in that video. And I admit, the gold wings are perfect. They are smoother than any other motorcycle that I have ever ridden.. they have way way too much power and I really mean that. And I explain why in my video. The answer to that is gas mileage. My Venture gets between 45 and 48 miles per gallon, it’s my third venture since 1986. The ventures all got in the mid to upper 40s for gas mileage.
The gold wings handle better than my Venture, the suspension is more sport bike taunt than plush vevture.. venture has much more leg room especially if you’re over 6 feet tall. And you get floorboards with a venture. You are not permitted to put floorboards on gold wings by the factory. Honda says that in the owners manual do not put floorboards on this machine. It has something to do with a history of damage to the shift mechanism or the transmission if you have this floorboard style shifter..
I admit the Goldwing is smoother, faster, I like that it had reverse, I like that it had a center stand. But on my Venture, I can get at the clutch, water pump, alternator, starter, and slave cylinder without removing a single piece of plastic or the gas tank. You can’t even see those things on the goldwing unless you remove square feet of plastic……
that’s why I went back to a venture.. they are simple. Both machines will go over 200,000 miles with no problem, just basic maintenance..
The gold wing is smoother, faster, handles better, has better brakes than the venture. But a gold wing has the personality of my toaster, it doesn’t look feel or sound like a motorcycle. It has no personality. No soul. I tried but I could not fall in love with it.. it was like I imagine it would be to have a trophy wife. expensive, beautiful, thinks money grows on trees
Thanks so much for watching my video and for taking the time. I appreciate it reading about your experiences with the goldwing and the venture. I'd love to experience the Venture myself to be very honest. Luckily I have not had a lot of need to dig around on the gold wing, however I did replace the head bearing and that was a fairly straightforward but very involved job because it requires removing the front wheel and brake and fairing and dash and controls etc. I don't doubt that other jobs on the way are just as involved. I've only had my windshield be stuck in the top position, and I took it apart but I can't find the culprit. I don't know what's blocking it from being slided to the original position. I've had no other issues with my wings. I also own the thick owners manual with the same yellow gold wing in the picture. I also have three other Gold Wing manuals for my other model years including the first one. I hope you had a chance to watch my first gen review because I touch on the history of the wing. I also have a buyer's guide for the 5th generation. Thank you again for the excellent information any potential buyer would benefit from. At least it's not a BMW when it comes to maintenance costs. Well I just got back from a trip to the mountains, loaded down with wife, luggage and pulling out trailer on the Interstate at 77 mph and recorded 36 mpg so no not low 30s. When by myself and riding like a hooligan I get 38 and normal mpg is about 42
Low 30's for gas mileage! Wow, I get a consistent 45-52 even with spirited riding.
My neighbor laughs at me, says I have to be a true bikers, buying bike before electricity! Then buying another bike, GL1500, before I build a bathroom! Now I'm thinking 1800 an still don't have either, electricity or a bathroom!
A bathroom and electricity?! Pure decadent luxuries. One can never go wrong with the Goldwing though.
Exactly!!! Haha! No bathroom but what I do have is acreage right above apex of Hood's Canal in Washington State, some of best riding in America on certain months! Go North at bottom of my hill, go north around Washington NW loop. Go right at bottom go along South shore around Puget Sound! My port-a-potty has a urinal, I asked my neighbor if he had a urinal in his bathroom? No! Haha!

I agree completely on the issues you mention. I have had those same issues on my 2003 Orange Wing. As far as the windshield problem you mention, it's likely that the triangular piece of metal assisting in holding down the windshield has been installed upside down. You will see it when you take the cowling off. It's an easy fix and once done, you will have no further problems. Switches on all Gold Wings are a problem after 10 years and the solution is an easy one. You just have to replace the switch assemblies on both sides at $125 an assembly (parts price). Plus even then, it's very important to continually "exercise" the switches so the internal grease that Honda uses doesn't harden prematurely . Some people take them apart to fix but it's a horrible job, and involves keeping track of a myriad of parts and springs, and won't fix the problem permanently. The other issue which is a royal pain is changing out the air filter but you don't have to do that very often in reality. A couple of hours of labour if you're handy and can keep track of all the screws and their proper positions, will take care of it. Oil and filter changes are as easy as it gets. Plus don't forget to have a plate installed underneath to protect the exposed oil filter. I do all my own wrenching and there is very little to do overall on the Wing...
Your experience with problems with the bags not closing completely such that the dash shows them open is an almost universal problem. I deal with it by learning to close the bags firmly which takes care of the problem. Apparently it can be fixed but it's a fiddly job and not worth having done....
It's wise to keep your eyes open for bad welds even though only a certain range of bikes were affected (mine wasn't). TIG or MIG welding of aluminum is a very difficult process and even when automated, can create problems in manufacturing the aluminum frame ( I have my own completely equipped metal shop with all types of welding equipment). Plus some people have had problems with the alternator dying after 150,000 miles have been covered, but I don't personally know anyone who has had that reported problem. Other than those points, it's probably the most reliable motorcycle I've ever owned in 60 years of driving bikes.... my 1966 Honda Dream 305 taught me to trust Honda !! Otherwise, it's as reliable as any automobile made and you can safely go coast to coast without a moments worry...

Right now I am preparing to begin the rebuild of the 79 - That paint is called Lindsey Blue and it's more of a Royal Blue shade - absolutely stunning even after os many decades / nearly half a century. @@pegasusmotorcycletours Yes, that rare Orange colour is one of the things that sold me on that particular bike. I was in to a dealer to pick up a cheque for another motorcycle that they sold for me, when my wife and I saw it on the showroom floor. My wife asked the salesman to start it up, and it purred like a kitten. She turned to me and said (and I quote)..."if you don't buy that you are crazy"..Welllll....with an invitation like that I became "Quickdraw McGraw" and whipped out my checkbook. It's been uphill since then.
One other comment....when the cowling is off, and you are checking the triangular bracket, if you move the windshield up and down, you will also be able to see where it is sticking. There are only a couple of places to check. The metal bracket slightly higher up could also be loose. But you will likely see fairly quickly the point of obstruction.

i have a 2005 gl1800 with 30,815 miles in super duper blue like the one in the video, i change the oil and filter about every 3,000 miles. my bike has a 6 cd player in the trunk. i just love my 2005 bike

I have a red 2012 airbag model and the updates that were done in 2012 is important to mention. A good reason to buy the 2012-2017. Updated fork bushing, stronger triple tree, upgraded stereo system and upgraded seat. I went with the 2012 for these reasons and yes I probably cannot tell because my previous Wing was a GL1500 and all I can say is I ride really hard with many miles in the Smokey Mountains and so many runs on the curvy roads up there. Hello Nick, I'm 62 and will be taking the rider safety course in July of 2022. I've never ridden a motorcycle, only once as a passenger many decades ago. I really enjoyed this video and the comments from other viewers. Learning a lot. I'm not sure what motorcycle I will get after I complete the course, but I've read that a Goldwing is not a beginner bike to own. I just find them to be amazing machines and would love to own one someday. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and stay safe.
Thank you for watching and for your question. I'm glad you are considering the goldwing because it's one heck of a motorcycle. I assume you've seen my review of the 5th generation goldwing where I call it the king of the road. I've also reviewed my first generation gold wings and I give quite a bit of history of this amazing motorcycle there if you are interested. Please feel free to take a look to my playlist for those. As for it being a first bike, although it's very heavy, it's also very smooth, with a low Center of gravity, and thus fairly manageable. I would not be hesitant to recommend a bike like this to amateur person who understands how to respect motorcycles. The weight would probably be the biggest issue to overcome, but you are squarely flat-footed on this bike so it's not unthinkable to have this be your first one. The link breaks also prevent accidental lock up of the rear, so there's safety features in that as well as the ABS to consider. I say take one for a test ride and see if it's for you, and if you should start feeling it leaning over too much at low speeds such as the parking lot etc, where it's most common to drop these bikes, you might be surprised at how well the bike is designed to take a small fall like that, and how easy it is to pick back up because it never really leans over too much. The standard engine guards prevent the bike from leaning over too much. Good luck and let me know what you decide to buy. I don't mind getting a less powerful bike until I get more experience riding. But I'll have that Goldwing on my mind until I become a proud owner of one.

@@garyadkins9496 Hi Gary, while taking the course there were several experience riders taking the course too and some suggested I start with nothing smaller than a 500cc or bigger, but I ended up buying a used 2012 Suzuki TU250X because it fit my purpose. My wife and I go camping alot and I have a van with a hitch. I bought a used carrier where I strap down the 250 on and drive to the campsite. This might not be the right thing for you. I'm a beginner and after taking the course I really understood that getting a Goldwin as my first bike wasn't a good idea. I also didn't want the motorcycle as a daily ride. I only occasionally take a short ride to the coffee shop, but mostly to the campsites where I don't have to worry about traffic. Hope this helps and let me know what you decide to purchase.
@Esteban Serrano thanks for your response. I'm planning to get into motorcycle camping myself, but with a lot of highway miles to get there and little to no off-roading. That's why I'm considering an older and cheaper touring bike to start with. I'll let you know what I end up with.
2006 Goldwing also had larger upgraded radiators. A must for hot climates. And an improved water pump. Water pump bearings were a known issue on the 2001-2005 Goldwings.
I hear that about overheating but in San Diego I've never had an issue. Perhaps in hotter climates like Utah, Arizona, Nevada, etc. Thanks for sharing.

Bought my '06 two years ago to supplement my FJR 1300. Well, I fell so in love with the Wing that I sold my beloved Burgundy '07 FJR, (which I do believe is the most beautiful bike ever made). Also, I was for many years a Porsche fan and always wanted a 911 (or amore recently the Boxter) and when I took the Wing out for a test ride I realized I didn't actually want a Porsche, I wanted this Honda, and it fulfilled all my needs without the Porsche costs and issues! Sure I still get to pay $350 for a new rear tire just like on the 911, but I only need one. I even bought the bike for about the cost of a full 70k tuneup at a Porsche dealer! Love the Wing and highly recommend you buy one BEFORE you get "older" because it is a damned rocket with a comfy seat, and I should have bought my first one years ago.
Well said. The Gold Wing is typically owned by older riders, but every motorcyclist regardless of age would appreciate the awesome engineering behind it. As for owning a Porsche, I don't know if you are aware but Porsche design the engine Harley-Davidson night rod, another bike that I have owned and reviewed as a competitor to the Yamaha Road Star warrior. But yes, I agree with you that when owning a motorcycle, sports cars become less interesting because there's no time that I would substitute taking sports car in curves than my bikes. @@pegasusmotorcycletours The Concours is a damned fine machine! I preferred the FJR over that personally because it felt smoother and for me the seat angle/peg position was perfect. The Kawasaki is a touch faster they say but I didn't notice anything to prove either way, and when you are talking 1 mph or so per gear faster, at the size and speed of either of these bikes, you really aren't saying much. I found my 07 to be the sexiest bike I have ever owned and her smooth power delivery was just thrilling, especially when rolling through some serious turns. For a big girl she carves perfectly. Enter the Wing! Not as fast off the line, but from 10mph to 110mph she is the smoothest and most pleasurable ride I could ever imagine.

My uncle after 20+ years of not riding, and now retired has a 2019 Goldwing. He and aunty rode to Vacouver Island from near Ottawa, to visit thier daughter. He's had large bikes before but nothing as luxurious. Shortly after I started riding in 2011, I think that's when the bug bit him again😆

Hi there, thanks for sharing. I agree, the blue on the wing is gorgeous - including the original generation. Do you ride one yourself? Goodness - must be nice riding up there near VC, BC and Banff. There is so much more of Canada I have yet to get to know. The Goldwing would be the ideal bike for most of it, but I am a sucker for the unpaved roads so it would have to be something that can also do a bit of easy dirt at least. Thanks for being here! Nik
I made a trip out west but purposely left out banff and most of BC. I rode through the north western states from Ontario. Visited 3 days on VC Island then headed home on the crows nest pass and hwy 3. Gradually heading east and mixing alot of remote forest roads and out of the way farm access roads. It takes roughly a day and a half to cross Ontario. It's a really big chunk of land and is truly a dualsport paradise. It lacks the jaw dropping mountains but the amount of dirt roads and trails always gives you mini epic views. Still haven't discovered all of it.
I do have a plan to head west again, riding the northern regions of each province. I only touched Washington via the Cascades, so the desire to finish the PNW and Cali is strong😊
In do time, I will travel this continent. Some places I've been were just in the way to get to famous areas. Now those places are on the list to explore.

I have a 1979 Goldwing similar to yours. Mine was a full bagger, but I am taking it back to stock. Not running yet, but hopefully soon.

I really enjoy my '06 GL1800. Now, with all the luxuries and power, there are some things that can be improved. The front suspension...Traxxion Dynamics gets it right, but it's costly. It fixes the dive. The most significant improvement that I just added is a Henry's Final drive. THIS...is a MAJOR improvement!! The stock transmission is grossly undergeared. First gear is practically useless and it revs waaay too high on the highway. It needs a sixth gear, but the Henry's drive is the way to go for sure that drops rpm. The bike is not for long legged riders...you WILL be cramped at the knees. There is a back draft that hits you right in the neck that is an aerodynamic issue, not easily solved. My Electra Glide, with the big ole chunky batwing fairing is actually much better in this regard. I put on an OEM taller windshield, which does help, but really doesn't fix it. It's a windy bike, although it looks so very streamlined. Overall though, this is a fantastic machine, just needs some refinement, but then all motorcycles are like that. Oh and if you can find one with heated grips and seat...get it! They get seriously hot and make riding in moderate winter climate a very doable thing. Storage is excellent, brakes are strong and the engine is about bullet proof. With rumors of Honda discontinuing the Gold Wing...well...get'm while you can.

Prospective owners and current owners are going to be very grateful to hear all the issues that you have addressed. I really appreciate it, and I really didn't hear that Honda is thinking of doing away with the gold wing. I can't imagine bad news to be in the future. It's one of their best motorcycles, best-selling worldwide and just an all-out King of the Road in my humble opinion.
Greetings! In February 2020, I bought a 2001 GL 1800 with 37,000 Kilometers on it (about 22,000 miles). Same color as the one in your video and looks identical. Paid $10,000 for it (I'm Canadian, so that's about $8200 US dollars). I don't know if that price is high, but it came with some nice add-ons including full Traxxion suspension system, dual headsets for the CB, Garmin GPS already mounted, fog lights, trailer hitch, battery trickle charger/maintainer, Passenger arm rests and cup holder, 18-DVD shop manual, original owners manual etc, etc. I've since put on about 6000 miles of trouble free riding. Only issue I had was the cruise control switch sticking in the on position, but multiple applications of contact cleaner solved that problem. It rides like a dream and will probably outlive me. From what I've heard, 28,000 miles on a goldwing is barely broken in.
I also have a 2012 Kawasaki ZX10R for when I just want to go for a tear. There's fast, and then there's stupid fast, and the Kawi falls in the latter bracket. It's a whole lot of fun in a frightening kind of way, but I think I'll be putting it up for sale in the next week or two. At 65, my reflexes are probably not as good as they once were, and the novelty of holding on for dear life when cracking the throttle is wearing off LOL. I've owned a lot of bikes over the past 40 years, but the wing does it all. It's a keeper and likely my last motorcycle.

You absolutely did make the right choice and for that price it is a great deal you got - the Traxxion suspension itself is a $3k upgrade. But the guy I bought the Wing from ranted and raved about it, claiming the difference between the Traxxion and stock was night and day. I have no frame of reference, as this is the only wing I've ridden. But reviews online look pretty good.
I’m a long time Harley guy and just bought my first GoldWing, A 2008 GL1800 with Comfort / Nav etc… with 27k miles. Pretty much stock but a few add-on cosmetic chrome pieces and a Garmin Zumo. I don’t know the first thing about GoldWings but always wanted one. This one was meticulously cared for. I paid 10 grand US for it and felt I did ‘ok’… I don’t know… unfortunately I didn’t get any of the maintenance paperwork. I do know I loved riding it the 430 miles home yesterday. When I pulled into my driveway my wife’s mouthed dropped. She loved it. However, I wished I had seen your videos prior to buying though just for peace of mind. Let me know what you think.

Sounds like they are plasma lights, not halogen lights LED lights will fix that problem, and I'm planning on purchasing one here soon, although I will probably put a yellow bulb in the dim light. Not only can you see yellow easier, people see it far easier

The reason why you cannot put the windshield down is because when the front cowling was off at one point, someone installed the triangular piece of plastic incorrectly .I had this problem but its a super easy fix. Take the front cowling off and move the windshield up and down and you will quickly see what is wrong.
I also agree with you about the switches; they last about 10 years and have to be changed after that

Once the cowl is off so you can see all the parts, move the windshield up and down and you will quickly see where it is catching on the lower part preventing it from going down. For myself, I had the triangular piece installed upside down preventing the windshield from going fully down

I would suggest that most GW owners carry out their own maintenance and whilst the GL1800 looks intimidating there's not much a competent DIY mechanic can't do. There's wealth of step by step maintenance videos on TH-cam and many GW forums on the internet and the Honda workshop manual can be downloaded for free. If you put your bike into your local Honda dealer you're going to pay a fortune in labour simply because of the all the plastics that have to be removed and refitted. Frankly, I wouldn't trust anyone to work on mine. When you get down to it you'll be surprised how easy it is to work on.
As for electrics, GWs don't have electrical problems other than reports of grounding problems through the block connecter under the seat and/or under the trunk, which are easily rectified. 99% of electrical issues are more than likely caused by previous owner(s) adding badly installed accessories which overload the stock wiring and more often result in a dangerous bird's nest of loose wiring under the seat and in the fairing. Handlebar switches should be lubricated occasionally but that's the same for any bike.
Sounds like the previous owner of your bike converted the headlights to HIDs because halogen bulbs don't warm up, HIDs do. And the radio should work so I can't imagine what the previous owner has been up to.
Thanks for the clarification with the HID lights and their warming up - Thy are wonderfully bright, but take too long to get there, and the wiring has been expensive and difficult to retrace. I actually agree with you re: working on ones own motorcycle - in fact the maintenance manual has the photo of my yellow GW so I had to get it if not for anything else, then for the collection aspects of it :)
But of course I have made good use of it, from brakes to the next project which is tightening/replacing the stem bearing. That is a bigger job with already about $200 in tools and parts, but with the sidecar attached it definitely needs it done. Thanks for being here and a part of this growing community. Thank you. I'd have no reservations with that purchase, and in fact just picked up one myself, same mileage but 2002. All works well save for the sticky buttons and windscreen.

1902 FN 300 introduced the first MC with shaft drive. BMW had them on their MC’s decades before Honda. And I too ride a Honda for profit.

I clocked 400 to 700,000 miles on more than a few VFR800’s. I do my own maintenance . Honda refused to sell me the unlimited mileage extended warranty so I’ve bought my mc under my moms name twice. On account that my VFR had over 200k miles will still covered. I also serve legal documents and finally after many decades got bit by a pit bull an hour ago.

I have that same color Goldwing. I really wanted the Yellow one so it would match my DL1000 V-Strom but my wife loved the illusion blue.
Oh, I remember seeing the yellow Vstrom with the full luggage - I too like yellow on my vehicles - have had 5 so far. I still prefer the yellow over the blue though. (PS - the first review on this channel was of my Vstrom 1000 - I love that motorcycle).

What's your view for a person upgrading from Triumph bonneville t100? I'm just worried about the weight

I see some fair prices on some clean low mile units, but they all lack ABS. I have never been on a bike with ABS should I be that concerned in deciding, do you have any opinion ?
ABS is great and it's one of those things that are useful in those rare moments when you don't expect that you would need them. There are people who swear by abs because they've had a close call, and that's understandable. I'm not one of those people. I can live without ABS and most of my bikes do not have it. This includes my yellow Goldwing as well, and it shouldn't concern you too much either because gold wings have linked brakes. This means that when you apply the front, it will automatically apply the rear as well. This prevents locking up the brakes where the ABS would kick in. So the only time you would feel the ABS on a Goldwing is in really bad situations forcing emergency braking oh, something that's common in panicked surprise situations. I would never let the lack of ABS to track me from a great motorcycle. I hope that helps.

Advise please. New to this and looking at a Goldwing. Found one, a 2008 but has 71,000 miles on it. The asking price is same as other 08’s with 40-50k miles. What is engine life expectation and how does mileage affect cost? Thank you
Welcome to the channel. The main factor is the owner and vehicle history in this case. 70k isn't alot for a goldwing but its also not insignicant mileage. I'd keep looking for a lower melaege gw if the money is the same unless you are really in love with that specific bike. Gwings are not hard to find. If you are local I'm happy to assist. Just reading through the comments and felt that a shameles plug of a chap who has a TH-cam channel and posts videos of rides he does, and also has videos covering the maintenance side of things. Check out Cruiseman and Cruisemans Garage. It could possibly save you a small fortune in the life of opening a Goldwing!!!

I'm hoping myself to be able to some day get a Goldwing GL1800 TOUR DCT, as I suffered a severe stroke in December 2018.and was left paraplegic and fully paralysed in my left arm. So, I'm now unable to ride a motorbike with a standard clutch and conventional gearshift. Hence why I'd need to get a model with the DCTgearbox, and then the only things I should need to be cautious about would be NOT to fall over when I come to a stop!! Ideally, I'd really love to have a GL1800 TOUR DCT converted into a trike, which should then totally illuminate the chances of my falling over when stopped, and also not worry about any balance issues whilst riding!!
And(with the DCT models being equipped with the 'walking mode', parking should be much simplified too!!
The only issue I'd still have, no matter what I do, is that I can no longer walk and am in an electric wheelchair, so, would need a trailer suitable for taking my wheelchair with me wherever I need to go! Ideally, this should be a covered trailer and it would be an advantage to have a built-in charger for the wheelchair battery too!
Incidentally, my favourite colour is the Candy Ardent Red, which the trailer would need to be sprayed in too, to match, as it is also almost a colour match to the panels on the sides of my wheelchair!!

My sidecar mechanic is able to do, and regularly does, precisely what you are asking for.vhe modifies Goldwings and trikes in order to serve folks with different needs out of it such as yourself. His name is Rix, he's a marine vet and his garage is SoCal trike center in San Marcos CA. Tell him I sent you and he'll take care of you.
In general year does not really matter as all gen 5 units from 01 to 16 (they did not build any 17s) are essentially the same. In 2005 the radiators and fans were increased in size which really helps with cooling especially the fan size. All years the Anti-dive will fail at some point on 100% of these bikes but it can be disabled for free in 10 minutes so problem solved. Radial tires are harsh riding and using a bias ply up front will really help soften the ride as you can drop the pressure to 34lbs. Alternators normally go bad around 100 to 150k but is very easy to replace. You are spot on with the switches but again these can be fixed easily with electrical cleaner (never wd40) The trick on the windscreen is to jiggle up and down and it will drop. I buy and work on a lot of these wings and they are the best gamble out there.

Radiators and fans were upgraded for the 2006 model, not 2005. Yes, there was a 2017 model but there was no 2011 model, just the 2010 model which was the last US-made Wing before the production was moved to Japan and the little redesigned 2012 model came out. It really matters which year, stay away from used 2001-2005 (radiators issue), go with a 2006+ or even better 2012+ models.
Unless ypu go with an endeavor trike ehich has 3 radiators

Great correction. They can't me with H7 if ai am not mistaken, and yes, I meant HID. Had a heck of a time with my lights.

I'm selling a yellow with 45k miles for that amount. It is realistic, albeit high. If you look in my channel, i sold a great one with only 1600 miles for about 13k.

That's a good amount of miles. I just had to change my head bearing, and starter actually which were both fairly involved jobs that I'd rather not have to do again. You can use those two as bargaining chips. To change an air filter is a 6 hour job too.
I didn't want to hurt his feelings with logic. Some old timers don't want to part with 20 years of memories. So, I decided just to buy a new 2023 in Ardent red. I pick it up Wednesday. 20 years from now I'll be that old guy. Lol

Use to like my 01 goldwing. But now it cuts out bad under load and gets worse as it gets hot. Came on suddenly in the middle of a ride when it was running 100% perfect. Low miles and not sure what happened. 22k miles and I'm stumped with no time to get it fixed or even haul it to a mechanic when they're open.
Greetings and welcome to the channel. That is extremely low mileage for any such problems for a Goldwing. By cutting out what exactly do you mean? Sometimes if you pick up gas that is not great, as in water in the gas, you'll hear the engine cutting out. Feel more than here. Cutting out in the engine can be do either too bad spark, or bad fuel delivery. The easier thing would be the first to replace spark plugs, and when you do examining them will give you a clue if everything is in order in there. Look at the nature of the tip, if it is with sharp edges oh, and if it is soiled in certain ways. Different types soiling on the tips of spark plugs indicate different problems. If that doesn't resolve it your next best bet is to visit the Fuel Delivery Systems and make sure not starved. But I've experienced a similar problem in other bikes and could definitely trace it back to one particular gas station. Water in the gas does not burn out or burn off and will require fuel to be pumped out and the tank completely dried out. Do you think this might have happened to you, if you think back and try to remember when the problem started and if it had anything to do with a recent fill up?
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I noticed that, with a timing light, every plug on it appears to fire in a similar pattern which isn't perfectly consistent and appears to skip a beat here and there. Today it cut out extremely bad to the point it was dying and the exhaust started getting so hot it was trying to catch some rubber trim on fire surrounding the exhaust. Literally making small coals burn on it. Again it ran good when it was cold which is weird. Would bad gas would run bad no matter if it was cold or hot?
@@jackle842000 No I don't think it would. It seems to me it is running very rich even though it is EFI and not carbureted. Running that hot is definitely not good for the engine either so please do go get that looked at - these are actually engines designed for low RPM low heat riding so this abnormality is very perplexing indeed. It would be strange if a timing belt went bad so early but then again it is 20 years old. It it is running too rich it will be evident on the tips of the spark plugs. I am afraid it's an involved job to check all of them to diagnose. I would appreciate in any case that you keep me informed - I am perplexed at what these symptoms are pointing to. @@pegasusmotorcycletours the plugs looked fine to me. Which puzzled me more. It started suddenly. As in perfect then right after passing this truck, a little later just started cutting out a lot. I did notice that this time when it started cutting it severely it had been raining just prior and a lot of evaporated moisture coming up. It's never cut out that bad or had the exhaust get heated like that before this. Only the exhaust got hot. The engine was normal operating temp. I'm wandering if the ECU has failed? Weird how good it runs cold. Then again it also sounds similar to a bad coil to me as well? Yet a bad coil wouldn't appear to skip a beat on all the plugs on both sides of the engine since I believe it has multiple coils???? I kinda regret checking the plugs cause now i didn't get that cover to seal properly on a side lol.. I'm not sure how to positively identify an ECU failure if that's a possibility. Is there somewhere you can check for a specific voltage pattern on a specific wire somewhere before and after the engine is heated? There is no check engine light which on cars can be a sign of an ECU failure because a sensor failure should trigger a check engine light I'd think. Any ideas for any specific checks I could use to help narrow it down?
@@jackle842000 I really can't wrap my mind around those symptoms - I can't imagine what they are pointing too for such a low mileage bike - and a GW at that. Now with the added factor of acting up after rain - that definitely might be related to an electrical circuit. There are miles and miles of wiring on a Goldwing so it's not a simple problem to find, and if you had trouble with the plastic side that pops into place, than I would not recommend you get into removing the rest of the plastics cause it can get nightmarish. At this point it seems like the best option is to bite the bullet and take it to a shop - you could ask around in the gold wing forums - here is a personal contact to reach out to - his name is Ray and he is a GW mechanic and owner of Wing Work - one of the most knowledgeable and honest mechanics I have met. (He picked me up form the side of the road and took me in until the problem was fixed). Tell him I sent you. wooldray@volcano.net
can of electrical contact cleaner should be in every biker's garage. I spritz em every few weeks, or more often, when I ride in the rain. WD40 works great at 'water displacement' too. Wink wink nudge nudge.

Dude if your switches are sticking 9 out of 10 times you can spray electrical parts cleaner in behind the switch and then work in an out.
Yes thanks for the tip, I've used contact cleaner before but am having two issues with my two hondas, both with the hazard switch - on one pressing the hazard switch turns on only one side blinker, and always the last one used. And on the other using the blinkers normally turns on both sides like the hazard does. So I think it's easier just to replace the whole switch.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours yea that’s different than a sticky switch. I’d fix that also, especially if you press one switch and something else happens.
I really hate trikes ad sidecars and those can am things with the two wheels up the front. I like bikes because they have 2 wheels. In 40 years of riding and lots of bikes I have never ever ever thought "This bike needs an extra wheel."
I also don't see the appeal behind the three wheel can am and spyders - might as well get a convertible. To me the design is too angular and sharp - looks like a bathtup with lights and wheels. But trikes are mostly used among riders who can no longer lift the bike even from the side stand - or handicapped riders who can't make use of the controls in the regular way. So I see the appeal there. As for sidecars - it's a century + long tradition and I guarantee if you rode in one you'd be pleasantly surprised. It does not behave like a motorcycle - you are constantly fighting it. I love riding the sidecar empty cause it wants to get in the air in corners and it feels so old school. It's hard to disagree with that statement. I just met a gentlemen a few days ago, owner of an 08 with 180k miles pulling a trialer/camper and riding cross country who mentioned he personally knows a guy who put in over 540k miles on his GW. My friend. I had a 77 gold wing. I rebuilt almost everything on it. It came to me in rough shape. I rode it to sturdiest when it was completed.
I have taken these carbs off and on a thousand times. I may have some tips for you if you need my humble assistance.
First tip. Go to an aquarium shop that sells fish. Buy the fittings they sell for pumping ir in the fish tanks. These fittings fit your gold wing carbs when it’s time to balance your carbs. You must balance carbs. Or. You won’t get the performance And the bike will not be safe.
