I was born after the whole Notebook craze. I thought Twilight was messed up because Edward was a controlling stalker who literally arranged for Bella to be kidnapped by his sister when he was out of town because he didn't trust her to stay away from Jacob who he thought was unstable as a young werewolf. But this movie takes unhealthy relationship to a new level. These people are hitting each other and he threatened to kill himself in order to get a date with her. WAAAATTT! My God, what were the women thinking when they saw this, because I know no men were watching this movie.

I never understood why so many people love this movie. If this is what people think romance and love looks like, I'm scared.

I had to watch this movie at a girls house on her birthday and tell her that I don't feel the same way at 1:00 AM and then pretend everything was just hunky dory for the next 5 hours just to not get lynched by her friends who were also there but thankfully didn't see that shit.
Never thought I'd cry Crocodile tears until that night, it was a matter of survival.
And this fucking movie is still practically a Vietnam style flashback to one of the most awkward nights of my life.

With the way people are always saying this movie is the epitome of romance I thought...I thought it would not be about weird obsessive teen romance? I worked in a bookstore and people would always find it so weird I never read a Sparks book...now I'm really glad I havent.
This movie is probably part of the reason why so many people over this decade have horrible relationship problems.

Okay, THIS is what the Notebook is about? Seriously? I thought it was one of those harmless movies people joked about for being too cheesy. I'm a hopeless romantic myself and this is just plain terrible!
that's what I thought! But nah, we got domestic abuse and cheating.
My boyfriend actually loves this movie but cries when I physically abuse him and scream that I hate him and push him away for no reason and get engaged and cheat on my fiance with him and get Alzheimer's. 🙄 like what do you want from me? WHAT DO YOU WANT?

We saw this movie in Health class back in high school, just because we were learning about Alzheimer's -- it was painful to sit through. 🙄 Oddly enough, I didn't get a crush on Ryan Gosling until I saw him in Only God Forgives.
I always thought this movie’s romance was INCREDIBLY WEIRD
Take the scenes of the elderly couple and then, instead of the original scenes, put in scenes from the beginning of "Up" or something like that. Any other true love story than this one. BOY, does this sound like a healthy relationship! Everyone knows that the key to a good relationship is screaming, pushing, slapping, emotional manipulation, and adultery!
Didn't the main actors hate each other during production? Judging by their performance, that doesn't suprise me.

@Studio Autio The Titanic was awesome. Not because of the romance but because of the old, jazzy atmosphere within the movie, followed by the horrific feeling that a lot of people are going to die and have died in real life aswell.

Love how everyone hated "What a twist!" M Night Shamalayan for "Lady In The Water" where he played the role of someone who would write something controversial, change the world, but be killed in the end for it, giving himself a god complex.
But because it's not literally Nicoholas Sparks playing the old guy, he totally didn't write this runaround of the dementia old couple basically stroking his own ego with a god complex about 100x more ridicoulous and somehow became famous despite better movies (like a walk to remember for instance, even if the religious stuff was kinda meh) for this horrible romantic....dramedy? It's too funny and stupid to be a straight up love drama to be considered anything less than a dramatic comedy.

Romance... Hmm everyone has their own concept on this abstract idea. However, I believe that love between two people is a mutual respect between two partners who lean on and depend on one another. Of course this does not mean one needs to be in a relationship with the other. Just two human beings who care deeply for the other. It is a strange thing hard to describe, but loyalty, respect, dignity, and truth makes quite the relationship.
To continue I would also like to state my opinion on marriage. Religion or government does not matter in marriage for it is a pact between two people promising to love one another.
But I do encourage you who read this to state your own opinions on love and marriage.
Not whatever was in this movie. That's for sure.
I guess, two people accepting and loving each other's differences and even if arguments happen will still talk/work it out together. Love, marriage, etc is all too complex to fit into one box but I believe these things are important in all successful relationships
I imagine religion matters in marriage because it's a religious concept. That, and some religions conflict, which is kinda of a big deal in a life long commitment. That's my 2 shekels.

Honestly this movie would probably be 1000% better if the main character was black. It'd be about a black man falling in love with a rich white southern lady and he'd have to fight off parents' and society's indignation and judgement. Then it'd be a masterpiece.
