Even better was that he was asked "Are you calling Senator Gore's wife a pervert?" and he replied, without losing a beat, by saying "No, I'm calling the head of the PMRC a pervert." Owned.
i wrote a college essay on censorship and those subjects and this event took up at least 2 1/2 pages of analyzing i still think its important to music in general
It's true what Doc Coyle said about the Parental Advisory sticker "those albums probably sold more"... when I was 16, if it didn't have the sticker, I was like "should I buy this?" ... of course now we can just download.
Having parental advisory/explicit content stickers on an album so that kids would know not to buy them is like the equivalent to having the prohibition laws in the 1930's take away certain alcoholic beverages to tell people what not to drink, it will only make them want to have alcohol/album even more.
It's funny because I was a teenager when this all went down and the resulting "ADVISORY" stickers started being applied to "dirty" albums. And yeah, my friends and I totally used those labels to decided which albums to buy. I remember frequent trips to the record store, looking at a couple CDs we were interested in (but only had the money for one that trip) and having the conversation "Well, this might be cool, but _this_ albums has 'Explicit' content, so it's probably cooler." It definitely had the complete opposite effect. Not only that, but there obviously was no law saying "EXPLICIT CONTENT" albums couldn't be sold to anyone under a certain age. Some chains had their own official policy, but even that came down to who was behind the counter and whether they really cared enough to not sell you the album (none of them got paid enough to give a shit), so we wanted those albums more and there was nothing to stop us from buying them. The PMRC was a joke and totally screwed themselves in the end. And party in thanks to Mr Snyder, they'll be forever remembered as the punchline that they were.
What is really funny..in the end the whole thing backfired on the PMRC..all these "Warning" Labels did was encourage kids to go out and buy these albums
Kudos for Speaking up Dee Snyder. I had no idea he was the only one to step up. Music for me is an outlet of my trials and tribulations. I like to say that it is the voice of the youth, but someone else picks those songs to be played on the air. My best music discovered was at parties when people brought over their records and tapes. It seems like only words blowing in the wind with no power behind it at times, but hearing them makes me not feel so much alone and to try harder. Even though we have AH running our lives to make us feel worthless, it doesn't mean that I have to be one too. I just wish the songs that hit the mark could get played
I was just reading about pmrc in ian christes book, its about the history of metal, anyway, dee really put them in their place by telling that government shouldnt judge music lyrics in any way and try to "warn" the kids, like, thats what their parents should do if they think its going to have a bad influence on them...they probably thougth oh now we are going to call the most controvertial artist in rock music that time to testify,i wonder what would he have to say in his defense, and then he mind blowed them cause he is a smart dude and wont let government tell him how to write his songs...the stickers were printed anyway but that wasnt that important as how dee stood up for metal and all metal fans and bands \m/ hell yeah, dee rules :) and thank u metal injection for this countdown,i love it :D

Frank Zappa was the best musician to testify against the PMRC.
Agreed. I immediately thought of that actually before even thinking of Twisted Sister.

Honestly, it felt satisfying to see a bunch of overly uptight people getting put in their place.
Rock on \m/
