    We love the ever-faithful Mr Carson! What's your favourite Carson moment?

    • @Nyx773
      @Nyx773 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not necessarily favorite, but what comes to mind:
      For heartwarming: Mr. Carson getting Mrs. Patmore to confess to having failing eyesight (holding her hand).
      For comedy: When Mrs Hughes feigned a wrist injury and thereby forced Mr. Carson to cook.

      The indoor picnic. He was so flabbergasted and appalled he couldn’t mask it. He didn’t say much, but his pauses in clearing dishes and facial expressions make me laugh out loud every single time.

      He is my favourite character. I think my favourite moment of his was one of the times that we just see him reacting to something happening. The camera will cut to him and you'll see him silently looking disturbed or amused and one of those times got me laughing.

    My favorite moment was the "you make me want to check if my hair is tidy," scene with Elsie. It was like you could see a moment when he realized she thought of him as a person and not just as the Butler. I think people don't see Charles but generally see him as his role and he started realizing then he was important to someone else as a person not just a position.

    Mr. Carson might be rigidly Victorian at times in an era that is no longer Victorian, and he isn't one of my top five favorite downstairs characters at Downton Abbey. But, I still have a certain respect for this character in how he is as a person and also in his profession as a butler. Where would the rest of them be without Mr. Carson or Mrs. Hughes? (Not to mention the steadying and crying shoulder he had at times for Lady Mary when she was at her most vulnerable).
    And I won't pretend Mr. Bates was ever a saint, but the first Mrs. Bates was a relentless and evil woman. Like evil incarnate. I hated her.

    Lord Grantham realizes that he never should have doubted his dearest friend Bates. It feels like Bates should have told Lord Grantham that he needed to do this but Lord Grantham's honor would never have allowed him to do it with his consent. Lord Grantham should have trusted Bates. Thankfully his faith is reaffirmed.

    That O’Brian is the most awful, evil being…how a woman could be so low…she puts Thomas to shame! I think the best Carson moment is when he proposes to Mrs Hughes as itmrelates to his personal life…another when he lets Mary cry her eyes out about Mathew.

    Unpacking the scene...
    If you recall in season 1, during the early years of the will they, won't they between Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley, Evelyn Napier arrived at Downton for a visit as he was ushering around a Turkish diplomat, Kamal Pamuk. Kamal was handsome and charming in many ways. Lady Mary being Lady Mary couldn't resist his charms. After dinner, Kamal corned her and thrust himself upon Lady Mary with a passionate kiss. Later that same evening, Kamal blackmailed Thomas Barrow to navigate the gallery (hallways) of Downton Abbey to slip into Lady Mary's bedroom. In the heat of passion, he cried out a fell dead on top of Lady Mary of a supposed stroke. It was at that moment Lady Mary ran upstairs to fetch her maid Anna. Anna then woke up Lady Grantham (Cora) and all Three-3 women carried Kamal's dead body back to his room. Lady Edith found out the scandal from a distraught Daisy, who in turn sent a letter to the Turkish Ambassador about the truth of Kamal's death. Vera Bates used Lord Grantham's name and her husband's association with the family to gain employment. Which led Lady Flintshire to send the letter to Aunt Violet (Dowager Countess). Vera was a jealous and greedy woman. Once she heard about her husband's inheritance she came back to Downton and threatened to expose Lady Mary and Anna about Kamal. Bates left the house and his employer to conceal the secret. A short time later, Vera committed suicide by poison and plotted to have Bates convicted for her death. After Vera's death, John and Anna were married in a simple but loving ceremony. Lady Mary arranged for a private honeymoon suite with help from Jane, the new housemaid. Soon after Bates was arrested for Vera's murder and sentenced to death. Gratefully the verdict was overthrown and Bates was released from prison in mid Season 3 episodes. Shortly after Lady Sybill's death.

      It's all a matter of perspective. There were plenty of traitorous people back then.
      Values? Like considering homosexuality illegal but incest wasn't? Shooting soldiers for cowardice? Death penalties?

      I think you mean well, but you need to think it through before saying, "bring back the 19th century." Life in the 1800s was only good for wealthy and upper-class white people. For the rest, especially blacks in the U.S. during that time, it was hell.

    Another thing. Carson is depicted as this fair-minded butler but he's anything but. Look how rudely he treated Molesley for wanting a position as what he was trained to be. Not even that! He was a trained butler but applies for the valet position and Carson belittles him for being reluctant to take a lower position. Would carson dared have stepped down to Valet? Heck no. Carson was just rude, unprofessional and unjust in my eyes. It really p/o'd me when Barrow became butler when Molesley should have.

  • @theoriginalpublicnewsense
    @theoriginalpublicnewsense ปีที่แล้ว

    I couldn't help but be a little insulted by the Charles Grigg storyline. Grigg, when returning to get undeserved sympathy from the viewer, says Carson said some harsh things when they last spoke. Says a man who storms into the abbey trying to extort money from a man who took him food to help him out. It was the dumbest storyline with the stupidest dialogue. We were just supposed to forget Grigg's nastiness and intrusive actions against Carson? Bad writing. Really bad writing. It's a good thing there were some great characters with great lines or I'd have quit watching right there.

    • @veenabazaria5121
      @veenabazaria5121 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the first thing, that is the insulting part happened somewhere around 1912 and the other thing happened somewhere in 1921. That's a 9-year gap which also includes a 4-year war. People and their circumstances change in such a long time. Also, they had a history which was not shown to us. I think that storyline was okay - Carson moving past things and Mrs Crawley having something to focus on after her son's death.

    • @theoriginalpublicnewsense
      @theoriginalpublicnewsense ปีที่แล้ว

      @@veenabazaria5121 He was extorting money, that's what we were shown. Then expected to feel sorry for him. Not okay by any means. Just bad writing.
