His character development was nicely done in the series bu they did him wrong in the first movie ... Tried to make him the comic relief but doesn't suit him..
Mr. Molesley is the best character. Honestly, I think they can build a show around his character. For me I think we need more Mr. Molesleys in the world. He would be such a decent human being.
I loved that Thomas, after all that he had gone through, was finally going to find some happiness. For me, that was one of the most satisfying aspects.
@@catcauldron217 I've always thought Mary's parting words to be a bit of a curse. The world during Thomas's time finds homosexuality to be an abomination, punishable by imprisonment and hard labor. The world is not concerned with Thomas's happiness. I'd rewrite her words: "May you be HAPPIER than our cruel world allows you to be."
It is not just that particular individuals found some happiness, but that the entire household felt glad for their sake. Downtown Abbey began as a stratified assortment of characters and evolved into a close-knit family where everyone belonged. I think that is the outstanding virtue of the show.

Something I love about the progression of the show is how it displays the atmosphere shifting with the years passing. In the beginning it felt very serious and stiff with the clothing and mannerisms being, well, very 1800’s. And now it’s so light and the atmosphere feels very modern, like any of us could step in and feel right at home. One scene from the final episode of the last season stuck with me, when Mary actually sat down on a bridge next to Tony in her light informal clothing outdoors. Even something like that would not have happened in the first few seasons which gives you an idea of how restricted everyone used to be in their mannerisms and how far they have moved into modern informal life. To me as a viewer this actually felt refreshing, like they were somehow free or relaxed if that makes sense.
I miss them. I think the creator and writer of the series Julian Fellows has said he wished he had started off earlier than the Titanic sinking. I wish he had too. Ten years earlier would have given us at least two more good seasons. Oh well. Take a look at his Belgravia. That one left me wanting more too. 2/14/23
There's (fan) talk of a Prequel. Set when the Dowager Countess was just starting out as Lady Grantham. Just before Cora and Robert get married. Somewhere around the mid 1800s.
He could easily do another series in the middle, to cover many of the stories that weren't told at all, or told completely. There are lots and lots of them. Specifically, involving Matthew and/or Sybil. A Downton Abbey: Matthew and Sybil miniseries, that digitally de-aged the actors a few years, and used camera shots and angles that were never used in the main series, could be spliced in. Which would also put Violet back in, in unused footage. They did, and still do this very successfully with The Karate Kid movies, and the modern Cobra Kai series. Wherein, they use unused footage and unused camera angles that have never been seen before, from The Karate Kid movie from the 80s. Can you just imagine all the massive amounts of unused footage involving everyone that could be useful in a Matthew and Sybil series, that went back and told all the untold stories about these two very popular, prematurely killed off characters.
Older than titanic and it wouldn't have been as good. The key disaster events throughout the series were the central plotline and nothing truly wild happened before the titanic.
This entire movie feels like a piece of fanfiction. It’s literally the “Singin’ in the Rain”/Downton AU of what was apparently Julian Fellowes’ dreams. 😂

Mary often is painted as a snob though I would argue the actual snob of the sisters was Edith. Thomas giving his resignation and Mary understanding is such a good conclusion to their relationship. Mary was always kind and accepting towards him. She enouraged his friendship with George, even bringing George to visit after the suicide attempt to cheer up Thomas. She knew his "skills" well enough to sic Thomas on Lord Sinderby and his butler (some of my favorite scenes). He willingly assisted which shows some loyalty to Mary, which we all know trust and loyalty are difficult for Thomas. I don't remember there ever being conflict between the 2 of them.
@oolala53 Simple: Edith was just as horrible to Mary. And most of Mary's attacks on Edith we see in the series were retaliation for things Edith did unproked.
