Who ultimately won, in the end? Clearly, it was Denker. When the Dowager fell ill and relocated to Downton, Denker went with her (as seen in "A New Era"). And, since there was no need for another butler in the house, and Spratt would never agree to be a footman, he had to go. No wonder he started moonlighting as 'Casandra Jones' -- he probably knew he'd need to have some money set aside.
@@Andrew-jv7tc That's a good point. However, Denker could still get a position after Violet's death, depending on whether or not she retired or if the Dowager made provisions for her. Lady's maids are still in service even today. Spratt, on the other hand, is still in whatever circumstances he's in.
I think she figured if either of them felt like they had the upper hand, they would be insufferable to each other and to her. A balance between them was the only way to keep the peace. Besides, she said she hates being manipulated and clearly Spratt was trying to mastermind some sort of embarrassment for Danka. If only Violet understood how truly bad Danka was and thoroughly deserved an early demise.
I always rooted for Spratt. He may have been a challenging person to work with, but he knew his trade. Danker really had no talents besides constantly trying to upset him. If she had been good at something it would have been different. She wasn't. Besides drinking.
As far as I remember, there was no hint of 'foul play'. This scene actually puzzled me a bit, as well. I mean...any working class woman back then would have known at least the basics of cooking. And while it's not that easy to make a rich, delicious tasting broth from just natural ingredients, how could it have ended up smelling|tasting foul? Bland would have been the likely outcome, not disgusting.
Danka couldn't cook so she got some help from Mrs Patmore but Spratt figured that out and tossed out the broth Mrs Patmore provided. So left with no other choice, she created something on her own.
Denker was the one character on DA I absolutely despised. She was too annoying to even make a good villain like O’Brien had been. And I wasn’t a fan of Spratt either, except when we find out he’s Edith’s “agony aunt”. The two of them together were the worst parts of the later seasons.
At 1:16. Rich people are so weird. Why is she taking so much luggage to go to another grand country house to spend a few days there? Is she moving house? Is she taking all her old-lady knick-knacks? Here I am always trying to figure out the least amount to take anywhere--going somewhere tropical thousands of miles away is always super-helpful, as it requires just shorts, shirts and swimsuits. But...wow. The Dowager Countess definitely needs to live the "minimalist" lifestyle so beloved of today's super-rich, like Elon Musk, etc.
The dowager and these two could be a spinoff all of their own and it would be just as popular as Downton Abbey. Just call the series "The Dowager's House". And have Ian McKellen be Maggie's gay b!tchy neighbour with Barrow as his Butler and Valet and personal slave, and Obrien as head house keeper and cook and call it the House of ill repute !
Spratt and Denker are the sadly few bright spots as Downton became bogged down in lifeless and predictable writing and poor acting. The thing had basically collapsed of it own ponderousness but these two gave it some life support
Spray is the most unappealing, mean, selfish servant they could have come up with. He must lay awake nights thinking up ways to tear Denker down. Servants like him act like four year old children trying to be the favorite employee, I have fired people like him before, I do not put up with that kind of childish, juvenile behavior in my home or business.
@@raftai665 Spratt was definitely a piece of work but I don't remember him ever initiating extortion against Danka. On the other hand, Danka did do exactly that to him. Spratt did want and expect everyone to bow to him but he was also content enough just to be left alone.
Love it! I suggested this idea just a couple of weeks ago and here it is! THank You!!!
😊😅
"There's a point Spratt, where malice ceases to be amusing."
Such an underrated quote.
@@Byrnzi360 I agree 👍🏾.
Which only goes to show she gets some of her entertainment from watching then squabble! LOL.
"It is deliciousss." Never underestimate the Dowager Countess. She hates to be predictable.
😂
I remember Mary saying the same thing on her wedding day
Spratt said it once too. Actually he said she's unpredictable.
When she said de-li....-cious it killed me! 😂😂😂😂😂
"How else you like to be summoned, by Joshua's trumpet?" 📯
I've never laughed this hard 🤣
2:27 Seeing the Dowager Countess in anguish and Mrs Crawley snickering off is the Best part of this video.
I love how the Dowager is just so annoyed by the squabbling
After the dowager these two were my favourite characters! I wish we got to see more of them in the movies!
Really?
@@SusannaEmily yes, they were so funny!

Totally agree. Their relationship was superb + superb acting ❤️
In his own way, Spratt is just as haughty and judgmental as Carson!😂😂
Even moreso I think.
Should've included that bit where Spratt caught Ms. Denker's plan to use Daisy's broth cause that was funny

In that case, I’d say Spratt since he could get on with his writing, while Denker would have wounded up withiut a job after the Dowager passed.

that Denker's laugh at the end was PRICELESS xD
My most favourite combo!
Is that actor (Spratt) a famous voice performer in England? He speaks so gallantry and eloquently not to mention his perfect tone of voice.
They’re actually quite funny together. I hope the actors are called on to take part in the next Downton film. Lots of good material to mine there.
I wonder if she said the broth was delicious because she liked the chaos between the two

Anyone else notice the HA on the car’s license plate after the Dowager says Spratt to fetch the suitcase? 👍🏼😅
I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship were are you from?
Dowager just know how to play the power game here. she make sure no one is over power each other in her house. lol
I’ve been waiting for the clip of this barren battle between them 😂
Utterly hilarious 😂
Utter class.
No that's called drama 🔥
Why couldn’t Violet get pleasant servants?
I somehow think she reveled in dealing with them. It certainly made life more interesting than people willingly doing her bidding professionally.
She always liked life to be interesting. Pleasant servants would be boring. She was enjoying their battles.
Because it wouldn’t be an opportunity for jocularity!
Thanks so much !!
Spratt should have be given screen time.

Denker has disgraced herself
Girl power. The countess didn't give her away.
Did Spratt put something in the broth? Or was it just Denker couldn't cook?
