Mr. Carson's genius was to allow Robert to think Robert ran the show. Mrs. Hughes' genius was to allow Carson to think Carson ran the show. But Mrs. Hughes ran it all along.
Mrs Hughes was one of the smartest one in the show, she understood Thomas, took care of Tom and knew all about lady Mary , she never told Mary’s side. As a woman in the 20th, she was way ahead of her time.
Mrs. Hughes had in her possession every key belongiing to each cupboard and room of Downton, and also to the individual hearts of its residents. And what a capable and caring guardian she was!
which makes the video title more appropriate: at the time, the key holder (aka person not the object) possessed power over the entire household, hence why chatelaines became a fashionable accessory
So true. Another thing I liked is that they were able to give each character his/her own “story” despite having such a large cast. I thought it was very impressive that they were able to work all of the characters into the story.
In real life, I feel that people like Mrs. Hughes are also often underrated and often only noticed by those who are touched by their wise counsel. They are the type of people that are most appreciated and noticed by their absence.
What I think this show does really well compared to a lot of others is portray strong and compelling female characters without sacrificing their femininity/hyper-masculinizing them
The best thing about Mrs. Hughes anger, is that it's such a contrast with her compassionate nature. She's the ultimate boss when it comes to actual confrontation and she's not afraid to just be her own person, always understanding other people's intentions.
Simplicity. Dignity. A sense of self-worth and respect for the obligations of duty and hard work, regardless of class. This is why people are drawn to the series and come back to re-watch it, again and again. Also, the costumes.
Oh I love DA . I agree it is rare to have such a large cast with wonderfully written characters, which truly the acting was remarkable, outstanding . One of my favourite characters, definitely Mrs. Hughes. Wish I had a Mrs. Hughes in my life.
The scene where she and Tom confront Edna should have come before the scene with her and Tom in the study. And THAT scene is one I love so much, because Allen Leech conveyed so much raw emotion as a man who loved so deeply, that even months later just the mention of her completely undid him.
My other favorite moment in this portion of the entire series is when she comforted him in the drawing room. He was struggling horribly after Sybill's death, still loving her, missing her and Ms. Hughes was very compassionate in how she protected him.
Every time I see this scene I think when Green asks her "Does Mr. Bates know?" What a stupid question, you're still alive. I wish they has Mrs. Hughes say that
@@Dr.SyedSaifAbbasNaqvi Spoiler Alert‼️ If you haven’t seen the movies, don’t read my second and third paragraphs! I became “Team Barrow” when he used all of his savings to obtain the cooking ingredients, and then discovered that they were fake. I just felt so awful for him. I loved him from that episode on. He was a very complex and nuanced character, and Rob James-Collier is a FANTASTIC actor! And you’re right - he did have a wonderful heart. He didn’t hesitate at all when Lady Edith’s bedroom was engulfed in flames. He ran right into the fire to rescue her! He took a beating for Jimmy, who just ran away. He was a good man underneath the snark. One thing that did bother me occurred in the first movie. When Lady Mary asked Carson to come back to Downton to help prepare for the King and Queens visit; because Barrow wasn’t quite up to the task, and wasn’t preparing things properly. That bugged me, because Barrow was always very competent at his job. Even when he was plotting and scheming, he worked hard and knew what needed to be done. I realize it was just a plot device to bring Carson into the story, but I thought they should have accomplished it in a different way. They could have had Barrow sprain his wrist or something like that, and not have maligned his work. If there’s a third movie I really hope he will be included in it. We really need him with the Dowager Countess gone. I hope Barrow will at least come back with his beau for a visit!
The actor that played Mr. Green understood the assignment, he played the part so well I couldn’t stand him any time he was on screen, even before what he did now that I think about it, he seemed like a sleeze from the start
This relationship between Robert-Carson-Cora-Mrs. Hughes although idealistic but a beautiful display of hierarchy in a well-functioning organization. Carson and Mrs. Hughes knew their place in the pecking order but also earned their place. I love how keen and socially aware Mr. Hughes is and knows how to work with different characters.
The Dowager once said, "a lack of compassion is as vulgar as an excess of tears". Somehow, Mrs. Hughes is the personification of the ideal kind of person the Dowager was describing with that saying - a balanced person. Compassionate yet not overly emotional. Whilst many wish we have a Mrs. Hughes in our lives, she is the kind of person that I wish my own character emulated. Alas, I am not like her, no matter how much I strive to be wise and a good judge of character.
You have to train a good husband, they don't come ready made. I moulded mine to the perfection he has become. I have managed to hang on to him for close on 70 years. Mrs Hughes is going about it the right way
1:02 All aspiring tradwives should take a page out of Mrs. Hughes' playbook here. Yes, you're in charge of the home, but don't let your man take your efforts for granted. Mr. Carson surely wouldn't. Not after this 😅
I am always smitten with admiration for these actresses. Not only for their ability but also for their willingness to act without any make-up whatsoever. I suppose the money helps a lot.
……Phyllis Logan has always been an excellent actress. Watch her in UK tv series’ ‘Inspector Morse’ episode entitled ‘The Daughters’ of Cain’………wonderful! She also played in the last few episodes’ of UK tv series’, ‘A Touch of Frost’, as Frost’s new wife………
It must have been really hard for Tom. I mean, imagine. A guy from a lower middle class-“third class” falling in love. She’s never seen the real world, apart from how she’s raised, and for Tom to have her for such a small period of time, must’ve hurt. As a small class man, I can assure you, it’s crazy.
Ok this bothered me lol whenever camera was on mrs. Hugh’s face at dinner the crumble cake dish was empty, then when on Carson’s face the dish was almost full with one piece missing lol. 😂
but open minded enough. She never condemned Thomas Barrow for being gay. Carson on the other hand..... though one has to hand it to Carson, he never intended to report Barrow for being gay (which was a crime back then that was punishable by prison - not just jail - and you were shunned for the rest of your life. Good luck in trying to find a job). Mrs. Hughes was so compassionate about some of the afflictions that everyone had in their own ways. Highly admirable. Even in today's day and age. The narrowmindedness of some and the ignorance of others is an absolute turn off.
Though not a fan of full out dramas, I very much liked this show. Though not very accurate as the woman servants were given far too much leeway and Barrows, though disliked for his shadiness, was not ostracized as he would be in that time and age. It was touched on of course but no one shunned him. And when he was reported to the police, Lord Granthum talked the police out of it. Both the Earl and the Doctor declaring Barrows did not choose to be that way.
Far too enlightened for the time in normal society, the louche London society maybe . But not below stairs I married a good generation and a war later. in 1955, it was still taboo and took some years before my husband explained , and only then just because I used to swoon over Errol Flynn.
With the big difference of the feelings. Argus was a terrible person, mean and disgust human being. In the other side, miss Hughes was the most beloved person in service at Downtown
