Yeah I just did a similar build that ended up costing around $4000 even after getting everything msrp and I would've cried if it died after a week.
Had a similar thing happen to mine. Just that in my case it was a faulty 3070. After a few weeks of waiting though I got a replacement so all ended up well

I remember back when i got bored fixing computers and swapping parts
and i used to get a lot of PC's with a network card and people saying it's got no internet
so... i took an oscilloscope and a soldering iron to the network card and ended up fixing it
Turns out ........... cold solder joint on the voltage regulator
and i used to make around $80 per repair for a card that would cost $30 to buy new
and all it took was a little flux and a bit of solder and of course the solder wick to pick up the old solder
and all of a sudden..... Restart computer, open Device manager and VOILA an otherwise dead network card suddenly detects and self installs the drivers and is back on the internet

and from there i went onto repairing Motherboards (PCB level repair)
it's funny because ... you know that no one else would do it
LOL
so... you basically have absolutely no competition in your local area

In my experience, "infant mortality" is how most solid state devices fail. If it survives the 90-day return window, during which time it should be thoroughly stress-tested, it's likely to survive well into its own obsolescence.
yeah SSD usually broke early or late, compared to HDD it's pretty rare to broke in the middle of their life for unknown reason
This is known as the bathtub curve. Failures are most often found very early and very late in a drive's life.
@@Mr7suna HDD's typically follow the same pattern, the upside-down bell curve.
Within the first couple of weeks - then a good long stretch of no breaking - and then back up. \_/ curve.
Is why I usually test my HDDs by filling them up a couple of times (which takes absolutely forever), then doing a full zero, before I put them into actual use (like NAS storage).
SSD's I usually skip that step due to the TBW limits, even if I suppose a quick 2TB filling won't hurt TOO much in the long run.
@@Nightykk yeah but HDD being mechanical is a lot more subject to failure during it's life than SSD. I don't say the number are high, it's still really low risk, but a lot higher compared to SSD
My ssd was 2 years old and bricked a week ago :(
Maybe that compressed copper plate that looked warped (by heat) caused a short on the board, which in turn was creating even more excess heat when power was supplied.

Hi Greg, you are without a doubt one of best PC TH-camrs. About 4 years ago you saved me , when I had an issue with a blue screen of death. That PC is still running well; just did my 2nd build without any issues. Keep doing this type of content. Unfortunately, other top PC TH-camrs are just running out ideas. Simple cable management & relocating the AIO seems to give a big impact on the build. Btw RIP the Sabrent, hope the owner will get replacement for that.
It's crazy how just a little bit of rearranging can have a huge impact on build presentation!

well I 100% believe that drive died because of a faulty installation, lack of technical ability you can see that the motherboard PCI-E SSD's heat sink that was used on the main and only drive didn't even had the thermal pad on 15:23 and the factory stock copper sink sheet was all bent I believe the person who build it was confused and didn't know if leave the copper sheet or use the motherboard's PCI-E SSD's heat sink on and even took off once the copper heat sink then put it back on and then just placed the whole thing with the MB heat sink just covering the airflow of it yet with the copper sheet not even stick to it as it should so overheating the thing and maybe even at some point because the sheet was bent and all loose inside there just caused some short by touching something with some vibration
My guess is that there was too much pressure on the copper heat spreader, since he used it with conjunction with the motherboard one (it was all bent), and it shorted something on the drive.

I was like 🤯 when he’s giving the build stats and then he said 16gb of ram and 1tb ssd. I guess they blew their budget on cpu and gpu 😂
Greg, You need to tell the owner to enable XMP, he's got some serious Ram in that build and its running at 2133 mhz, you can see in the BIOS 6:08 🙃
It was probably defaulted after the bios reset
The WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR can actually be caused by xmp/docp if your ram is a bad bin

Does ram speed really matter that much though? I went from 2666mhz to 3600mhz and didn’t see a difference

Very much enjoying this series on fix its. Very sensible processes of elimination going down here too. One little thing I often try myself when dealing with drives is to use a thumb drive booting with Linux (latest Mint in my case; everybody has their own fav), where Gparted can very often be used to diagnose/initialise drives without changing anything else... am looking forward to watching all of these for some useful tips. Thank you for your hard work in producing all these!

Imagine some kid or adult saving for months or years to have this happen and you swooped in not only found the issue but even REPLACED THE PART to get him up quicker especially with school year starting soon might do homework and all on it. WOW, I literally had the same problem with my first pc build. I loaded up wz then boom instant crash. Tried switching ram, power supply, then finally switched the mother board and found my issue and it was a ram dimm slot malfunction. The same thing was happening to me it wasn’t even reading my M.2 and then the only thing that solved it was a whole new motherboard went through weeks do stress but now I feel like a pro with PC’s even after my first build. Love your videos Greg!

Sometimes when this happens the actual disk is not actually broken. A thing worth trying is to clear the disk in the CMD built into the windows media creation tool. With the hotkey SHIFT F10 you can open cmd, type diskpart, list disk, select disk x( the right disk) and then clean. This way you can try to clean the drive without needing to boot into windows
I have the same exact drive and same exact issue as this video. I tried to diskpart in Windows and by using Shift + F10 in the media creation tool. Both instances the drive is not selectable at all and can't even attempt to be cleaned because of that.

@@SiriusG You can even see where it got to hot. On the top chip at 19:00 the brownish text is killed by the heat and you can only see the stampingmarks.

I would try this but my M.2 isn't even available to try it. Doesn't show up in BIOS on both of my systems. All other drives show up fine.

those electronic dusters are shit worst waste of cash I've spent, get canned air.
@@endfm canned air works great but if you have a lot to dust they freeze up and pressure goes way down. You have to regulate your bursts. I haven’t ever used the electronic one just seemed convenient.
@@Richie5572 yeah it takes a bit of art to regulate the cans of air. I just don't get the power from the electric air, just about tried all of them. my mate had a air compressor as I watched him tear a capacitor of a top of the line motherboard in 2010 which scared me from air compressors.

Great job troubleshooting this one! That drive is toast, especially since you noticed it was running hot, when it shouldn't have. Hopefully the guy can get a replacement or his money back.

This is exactly what happened to me, I figured out it was my SSD and now my system is working perfectly!

I love when you call out the nonsense of those who hear something and repeat it without doing basic research first. So much in fact, I wish you’d make a series debunking pc rumors. Like a mythbusters but with pc’s.
This is very necessary. The amount of people I run into in games telling me all sorts of rumors about what’s good and what’s bad to do, even what brands are bad is ridiculous.

Jayztwocents has done this before and does it of and on. Built an entire PC the "wrong" way. Which wasn't the Verge level of bad, but debunked a lot of myths of the building process.

I love this series mainly because it gives all of us less technologically savvy PC builders ideas in case our own systems have these kinds of problems and these might be the solution.

From when I set up my first build in August 2021, I was having major audio issues, mostly with Nahimic stuff and it took my until December of that year to finally get those issues sorted. Major PITA but finally enjoying the PC gaming life. :D
that copper plate being bent out of shape says it all, also the fact that you said it was very hot when you tried unplugging it, something caused that SSD to essentially fry itself, maybe a bad component on the SSD itself was placed incorrectly in factory causing a short circuit, or the copper plate being used in conjunction with the Mobo heat spreader...
@JacketCK that copper plate is there if you dont use any cooling plate cover from the motherboard. That copper cover should of been removed since hes using the M.2 cover from that ROG mobo.
@@fiawms Should be fine, I don't think Samsung puts any Covers on their SSDs
@@fiawms Samsung ones should not be removed. It has the serial number on it. They are like an IHS: super thin. They should work fine with a heatsink-even the Sabrent one. Copper touches copper everywhere. Only if it’s been really mangled is it possible to even get it down to the PCB.

Disk Manager in Linux (GParted) usually is able to fix drives like this, if it is not hardware related. I've fixed many pen drives that everyone thought were toast with GParted.

Thanks for the info. I also had a nvme problem with a western digital black ssd. Although it took me a few days to figure that out. I’m new to pc building as well. It was in warranty and I got a new one. Wd even paid for the shipping.
I've dealt with many dozens of these same issues and the result I got from Samsung, Corsair and Crucial is that people are over tightening the lockdown screw and/or too much heat material on top of the drive before they clamp down on the included motherboard heat sink. You use either the aftermarket cooling sink or the included motherboard sink (If it has one, NOT BOTH). The resultant pressure cracks the pcb or some component on the drive causing early failures.
It would have been interesting to see what a 'clean all' in diskpart would have done on that drive. The OS could see Drive 1 so I assume Diskpart would have as well. I frequently have more luck in resurrecting troublesome drives with Diskpart rather than through the Windows UI.
I don't think that would work if the drive can't even be initialized, and that other disk tool he used couldn't even get numbers beyond a "STATUS: OK". The drive itself being almost scalding hot to the touch definitely tells me that whatever chip he touched was that hot failed with an internal short circuit which is pretty much one of a few death knells of integrated circuits. :x
I work for a repair center and I actually came across a similar issue with a intel optane NVME that came from a laptop it couldn’t be initialized in windows but Disk-part was able to reformat it as NTFS and it was able to be used with no issues. I’m not sure if would’ve made a difference in this case but it’s definitely worth a shot just to be safe
A secure erase is probably what I would’ve tried. Doesn’t even need Windows to see it. As long as the UEFI sees it, you can secure erase it. I used to do every few years on the 1st TLC drives to regain back some write perf.
Second step after CMOS would be to pull the storage and verify in another system, extra points for using a hard drive partitioning software to verify if the drive needs to be reinitialized before going the RMA route. But pretty much confirmed killed the SSD, not too PITA :)
Yep, the "PITA" was in reference to the possibility of it being a software issue. I always check other things along the way to confirm it's nothing else for the video.

If you have a Samsung SSD you can use the Samsung Data Transfer tool and it transfers it. Note: it will transfer ALL files, including installed games, software, and updates

Man that cable management in the back is clean Greg, I treat mine like a red headed step child, make the front looking good but the back panel I basically just shove the panel on with all my might and throw away the key!
IKR, everytime i losen the screws on the backpanel, the panel just jumps at me because of the cable chaos behind it :D

Same thing happened to my PC when I built it for the very first time - then I found out that I didn’t have a surge protector. Surge protectors are NEVER talked about when people talk about pc building. It’s a bit surprising.

I had the EXACT same thing happen to my Sabrent Rocket 4.0 1TB, I never could get in touch with them for warranty, so I just ended up swapping it through the retailer... This has me worried about the other 3 PC's I have that drive in, so I bought 3 backup 980 Pro's just in case...
Wow! Strange to hear a similar story about these drives. Hope it's not a common thing.
@@GregSalazar Yeah, it worked fine for about 6 months and just wouldn't boot one day, and like this one didn't show up in the BIOS, but would show up in Disk MGMT, and wouldn't initialize, but would show up when I checked with the Sabrent software, just wouldn't do anything. I was quite worried about the other machines, but they have been fine, knock on wood...
I had a similar story, it would work sometimes and then wouldn’t show up anywhere the next.
Is it possible that nvme can be so hot that causes overheating?

Not only fixed the issue but also upgraded his system. My heart melted!
That copper "Sabrent" label you peeled off was likely there to help with heat dissipation. The way it was warped and peeling would appear to indicate it must have gotten very hot for the copper to expand that much. Appears some non critical component in the drive failed short and heated everything up until the drive gave up!
The copper sticker was likely the cause. The thermal pad from the heat spreader probably pushed it against the NVMe drive hard enough to cause a tiny short...
The last time I saw this, I had a failed HDD (yeah, not SSD). I didn't get the WHEA errors that the viewer was getting, but I did get the 'Incorrect Parameter' when trying to mount the disk. Fortunately, I was able to pull the controller board off another HDD of the same model and get access to the data so it could be backed up and moved to a new disk. One of those times where keeping disks that are "dead" around for a while paid off. It doesn't always work, but if they are the same and were mfg'd within a short time period of each other, it just might.
WHEA is typically related to CPU or ram clocks, its voltage/MHz related. The guy probably had an improper overclock and somewhere through the process of it crashing 24/7 killed the drive, which probably had a design flaw from other commenters with the same drive reporting similar issues.
@@ViolentMLG how would you kill nvme with overcklock, bro? You would need to play with pcie voltages, but who does that? That is even possible? And that would kill gpu sooner probably.
@@ViolentMLG Yeah had whea errors too, related to a bad cpu (5900x). The Whea crashes even destroyed windows multiple times, sometimes made the system not detect my drives too. Had to cmd clear and reconfiger them. Im not even sure his system is stable now, for me it often crashed in light loads like youtube or just browsing, most often then not gaming was 50/50 stable, short after closing a game and surfing the system crashed. In the end it was just a bad cpu and had nothing to do with the drives (even doh they gave me so much trouble too, becouse of all the corrupt windows installs after many crashes)

To be fair on the build quality when I first built my PC I was having a lot of issues trying to get it to boot properly ended up pulling everything out the case and putting it back in multiple times eventually got it working but by that point I was already rebuilt my PC a half dozen times and that kind of takes the wind out your sales and at that point you’re just trying to get it working to be able to enjoy it and you’re not really worried about fixing the cables at that moment

You did what you had to do, I know the feeling and we've all been there. Software issues are always a crappy trail to have to run down when you just want to enjoy your investment. No one needs to flame you on this. Can say be glad people like Greg are around willing to help where they can - I do this for all of my friends, family and co-workers if they need help (I'm a parts hoarder too). Sucks when SSD's die and it happens early or lives for a substantially long time (had one Pro series Samsung drive die on me years ago when I went to install it).
@@GregSalazar looking at how much money he put into it, it's kinda obvious that he'd pull out everything and put it back together over and over again. And even so his cable management still looked relatively clean

Your rebuild of this looks amazing. It almost looks like a different PC.
Is a bit late now but you could've tried to Rebuild MBR; use CHKDSK or use diskpart to clean and recreate the volume / partition. (The last one helped when my disk showed the exact same error).
So I can basically guarantee that the drive failed due to the copper heat spreader shorting a capacitor or other component.

Copper is conductive it should have been removed before installation you are 100% correct

@@evilpharqur5111 But it's pretty common to have pre-installed head spreader like these for motherboards that do not have them on the m.2 slots. Shouldn't cause any issue if you leave them on the drive as that's what it's supposed to be.
While it might be the reason for failure in this specific case, generally they are fine and better than nothing.
A lot of drives say to not peel the sticker too

That was a pretty cool move upgrading him to the 360.
Not that it's a big deal considering the upgrade but I wonder if Greg keeps the 240 and maybe upgrades the next Fix or Flop PC that could use it or if the owner keeps it and can keep it in reserve, gift it to a friend etc. because they hold the warranty whereas the 360 was likely a review sample and perhaps not under any warranty. Again, not a big deal just shit I think about.

By the way, the diagnosis that I watched on this video is that why using the motherboard's cover for M.2 although the NVNE has its own heatsink? It would probably the main reason why the Sabrent NVME got destroyed.
Faced the same problem ... Thank god I watched this video before and ruled out the possible issue without having to rip out everything... Claimed warranty and now I'm up n runnin' ...
