    What does it mean that this was never explained to me when I was just starting out? Also, which is it, do my fingers need to work together or independently of each other? I can’t seem to get consensus on this

      I'm not sure how to answer your first question because I'm not sure what you're asking.
      As far as your second question goes...both. They need to work together, but that's the easy part because that's how you use them in everyday life. Independence is much harder to achieve and requires much more technical practice. But ultimately you need both for different purposes on guitar.

    This is going to take restructuring oh I learned guitar. I guess this just comes with practice

      Yeah, it definitely is a part of progressing as a guitarist. There are so many bad habits that we ingrain when we learn guitar because of lack of understanding as to how the body naturally organizes it's movement. Staggering chords is a perfect example.
