I haven’t mastered brushing my teeth or tying shoelaces yet, but I’ll come back to those after I watch all your wonderful guitar mastering videos ! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into making these wonderful videos. You have an army of watchers who highly appreciate it.
I've been playing most of my life and I'm an old Rocker, you have opened my mind to an understanding and a whole new Paradigm to my playing some I did naturally and others struggled with and excepted and moved on. Now I can go back and address some of my issues. Never had lessons just learned by ear and eye. But you are a wonderful educator, and I understand what you are saying very well and I like your pace. Not boring and upbeat. Straight to the point.
Well I’m an older guy myself but only been playing for almost three years probably the only one saying thank god for COVID but I fully agree with you i dont know if that comes with age cause I’m reading some other comments and I can tell which are the mature and who’s still has mommy helping them put their pants on And while I’m still not as elegant putting my thoughts into words as Mr Deyoung yes thank you very much and you too sir for writing such a nice thoughtful piece
I call the discovery phase a breakthrough. You've acquired a new movement and now you have to refine it so it sticks. That's how I see it. But I like you're analogy. I see it the same way. You when to practice slow and really focus on the movement (refining it) and over time it becomes second nature and when you let go your hand just speeds up and you don't even know how it happened.
I'm highly proficient at both Golf and Guitar... but I still have awareness of schema problems. Takes alot of work to smooth out such highly complicated actions.
Really nice presentation! You really explain things in such detail Mike it's awesome. I've never thought about alot of it. Just kinda go on autopilot and hope I don't screw up. I will start breaking things down. Thanks, going to check out your courses!
It’s just like when we first learned to get up and walk, then run, and perform various tasks without the over-thinking part. It’s no different from riding a bike or playing a video game with an Xbox or PS controller and improving over couple iterations, and ultimately, the same applies to playing guitar, as muscle memory is largely automatic and usually develops quickly and subconsciously and gets better by practically playing than analyzing theorem of how and why.
This is well done. And this is applicable to any skill. A sofware developer by profession and everything I am good at today is due to taking my time and engaging with them. I call it digesting. It needs to be slow and it WILL take time. What a strong foundation brings is you realise later a lot of things we do have very similar patterns and so generally digesting something well enables us to quickly digest other things. There are no shortcuts. It is hard yes, and because it is hard if you do it you stand out. All the best.
Been learning for about 2 months so far. My biggest problem right now is, when I'm playing frets 5-12, my fingers can access each note across all the strings (like when doing "spider walks"), but as I begin transition down to the lower & wider frets, things begin falling apart. I still have not been able to put together the correction combination of finger/hand/wrist movement so that each finger can "stretch" or be placed properly on a separate fret (frets 1-4 for example). I get a ton of "buzzing" of the strings when playing Low E frets & A frets, because my fingers are nearly all right on top of the frets. I'm constantly trying to tilt the guitar up closer to me, so that my fingers can have enough reach for the Low E and A string notes of frets 1-4. I constantly try to keep my thumb on the back of the neck, but it always has a tendency to slowly tilt onto its side, rather than the fingertip staying flat against the neck. My fingers actually slide on the strings when doing spider walks for example, on frets 1-4. I have tons of stress on the outside of my hand (almost exactly halfway between the outside of the wrist & knuckles.) Also, lots of build-up tension on the large, mushy part of my palm closest to my thumb. A video on how to correctly position our fingers, thumbs, wrists, etc. when transitioning to the lower frets (1-4 or so) would be much appreciated. Or pointed to a video you may already have done talking about this.
How do you position your thumb? When im on the thiner strings them i have my thumb over the edge of the fretboard and my fingers are diagonal and when im on the 3 thick strings then i have my thumb behind the fretboard
Your biggest problem right now is that you've been "learning for about 2 months". Most of your issues will go away with constant practice. Some only YOU can figure out since it's YOUR body. Some of these things on guitar can only be fixed by the player not advice or a teacher, but the only way to do that is to constantly play. I know this is the age of instant gratification and I want to play like Yngwie in 5 years, but that's not how it works. I do suggest you watch classical guitar videos and how they position their fretting hand. Even more important, make sure your fingers bend at all the joints, this will make things much easier. Especially your pinky finger. Keep an eye on it at all times and beat it to submission to curl at every joint and the distal joint. Took me YEARS to figure this out even after having heard about it for years and thinking it wasn't that important..it is! Make LEGATO your number one priority for now since everything will develop form there, even alternate picking. At this stage, Legato will have you crying more than a single mother raised, purple haired liberal, but do it. Very slow and attack the hell out of the note with common sense of course, don't hurt your hand. Your pinky must fret notes just like your 1st finger and as loud and dynamic. Do a lot of 1,2,4 and 1,3,4 hammers and pull offs across the fretboard..VERY SLOW. If it takes you 5 minutes to fret a loud and clear note with your pinky, so be it. Next week it will take you 3 minutes and the week after 1 minute and so on. Do make sure that note you play with the pinky is LOUD and clear. Do 1 minute hammer ons and pulls with fingers 1 and 4 a couple times a day because this is hard on a beginners and intermediate's hands. Turn off youtube and the 1000s of BS guitar videos because that's exactly what they are. Success only comes from HARD WORK, not tricks or new inventions for the wheel. This takes YEARS and DISCIPLINE and if you're not obsessed about the instrument, stop right now because it's not going to happen. Do the above for 3 weeks. nothing bad can come from it and you'll solve most of the problems you now have. The rest, again, you'll figure out on your own and in a few years from now.
@howtopracticeguitar interesting, though I still am trying to understand how to go from thinking about the skill consciously to a level where it is unconscious because if I keep thinking about it all the time, it is just too much and the brain starts confusing and actually staying slow and bad with the new skill, it is not ingrained.
making progress but its still so frustrating, i practiced for an hour today mostly doing spider exercices, did alright, had a break came back to do string skipping and my playing was crap. Still can;t consistently hit the fretboard even if I concentrate fully on it at slow speeds. I'm just trying to practice literally just hitting the write notes and strings coz thats pretty fundamental stuff.
...then there are guys who can play guitar upside down (my dad)... or with their feet....or stump fingers....or are blind...and are still 100X better than 99% of guitarist. I'm so confused.... It's always credible when a guy with actual muscles speaks authoritatively about muscle memory. Well played!
to be fair a lot of beginner guitarists probably wouldn't know this. Or they knew it but didn't fully comprehend it or think it mattered too much like me
Also wash your hands before you play and in general do not eat with your left hand(ask me about how I ruined a hwy 1 fender strat for half of a year after kfc)
Question, do you know what a schema is? You certainly did not explain it in your video. In school I met many professors like you, guess what, I never listened to them either.
Why speak so fast ? It’s as if you aren’t breathing or punctuating .. I guess it’s edited but why ? It also kind of sounds like your shouting . It’s not pleasant .
But there’s a lot of professional players that tell you to use some of the meat on your finger tips All mix info these are the biggest schemers I don’t see Jimmy Page playing the way you say why ? Hendrix never played the way u are describing it . WHY !!!!!!!
Muscles don't remember anything. It is the brain that does the remembering. You got fired for playing that unrecyclable baroque fragment by Petrucci. I know you won't let THAT happen again.
Nothing to pick on! I focus on his explanations, I don’t care for clothes, hair, or whatever (all fine). I think he might blink often because of concentrating on his thoughts, to explain concise and precise. And that‘s done perfect! 👌🏼

You have the best analogies to clearly explain what you're talking about. Rock on Mike!
I call the discovery phase a breakthrough. You've acquired a new movement and now you have to refine it so it sticks. That's how I see it. But I like you're analogy. I see it the same way. This might be my favorite and most useful video of yours
Mike, that thimble into a bucket analogy is pure gold. Thanks man!
i focused this hole year on playing tension less, and hell i got sounding good
Really nice presentation! You really explain things in such detail Mike it's awesome. I've never thought about alot of it. Just kinda go on autopilot and hope I don't screw up. I will start breaking things down. Thanks, going to check out your courses!
Just discovered this channel and watched like 2 videos, already loving it, thank you!
Love the analogy Mike, makes a lot of sense
This guy is a guitar scientist. Love these videos! 🎸
This was a great video. I actually gained alot of value and insight into things that I didnt even think of. Thanks!

7:59 thank you for editing in how to fill up the thimble with water😂

Very informative as usual
This is an excellent video and a great channel.

@@lelandgaunt7130 I know this was meant for him but this helped me out thank you
I see it's been two years since you posted. How's the progress going?
Valuable stuff And the b-roll of the thimble being filled is Oscar-worthy.
Excellent video!!!
Found it very helpful. Thanks.
Hmm.. this is a great video. Wish you were my teacher when I was a kid! Happy to have a list of the components of a schema, too.
Love the video. But how to develop disapearing guitar schema from 7:05 ?
woah haha
This dude reminds me of the guy from "Becker"
@howtopracticeguitar

Hah I do research on schemas! It was fun to see you use this framing :) I’m curious, what is your psychology background?
If you want to get good this video explains exactly how you get good.
Thats very helpful 👍
I have been doing all this for years -and I am still a lousy guitarist. Maybe I should take up building puzzles.
Listen to my muscle memory!
I spent 20 years filling up a bucket, but it hasn't improved my guitar playing LOL.
...then there are guys who can play guitar upside down (my dad)... or with their feet....or stump fingers....or are blind...and are still 100X better than 99% of guitarist. I'm so confused.... 4:41 "Negative snowball of a bunch of crap" sounds like a kindergardener trying to come up with a cool name for a grindcore band. Love it!
So practice fast as you can and fill bucket slowly mhm oookaaay
Awesome
5:20
first. at last!! GREAT VIDEO.
I didn't know about number 9😂
so just think "play whatever you want correctly" and BOOM, there you go. Full pro. Kidding obviously.
That clickbait 101 article really gets around, damn
Let me guess, 99% of doctors do this ONE thing (and don't want you to know about it)?
to be fair a lot of beginner guitarists probably wouldn't know this. Or they knew it but didn't fully comprehend it or think it mattered too much like me
Also wash your hands before you play and in general do not eat with your left hand(ask me about how I ruined a hwy 1 fender strat for half of a year after kfc)
I thought he is gonna play.... but

Hendrix never played the way u are describing it .
WHY !!!!!!!
The first half of this was mostly filler and obvious. The second half about muscle memory is a myth. Basically focus and go slow. Groundbreaking.🧐
Muscles don't remember anything.
It is the brain that does the remembering.
You got fired for playing that unrecyclable baroque fragment by Petrucci.
I know you won't let THAT happen again.
first comment, thank yku for this video
oh for christs sake, just pick a scale, blues, major minor, harmonic major minor and just drill it. what the fuck is this guy talking about
You sure get it.
I found it helpful. Knowing how to learn isn't something everyone knows how to do.
lol I can see that you don't teach guitar
All you do is talk....!
Stop blinking for god sake !
Stop watching him if you don't like it. He might have issues with dry eyes. Who knows.
He's sat infront of bright lighting
Nothing to pick on! I focus on his explanations, I don’t care for clothes, hair, or whatever (all fine).
I think he might blink often because of concentrating on his thoughts, to explain concise and precise. And that‘s done perfect! 👌🏼
@PenileAugmentation I wear contacts and blink normally. Might be dry eyed
