The Real Reason You're Not Getting Better At Guitar
There's an easier way to get better with less practice time, and it's not what you think. The reason intermediate players have a hard time improving is because they use the wrong muscles. It's a simple mistake, but you're probably slowing down your progress.

Learning how to correctly use your muscles is the key to becoming a great guitar player. Without the ability to control your fingers and hands you're not going to improve quickly, or reach the highest level of guitar playing. Understanding fast twitch and slow twitch muscles, how they affect your technique and how to use them will change your playing forever.
If you're looking for THE BEST BEGINNER GUITAR LESSONS than you really need to understand GUITAR TECHNIQUE. If you're a BEGINNER BLUES GUITAR player or even searching for an INTERMEDIATE GUITAR LESSON that will give you IMMEDIATE RESULTS in your PRACTICE ROUTINE, then start by taking EASY GUITAR SONGS and breaking them down into three categories: MUSIC THEORY, TECHNIQUE, & PRACTICAL PLAYING. For example, if you're trying to LEARN FINGERSTYLE GUITAR, then UNDERSTANDING CHORDS in BLACKBIRD by the BEATLES is a great place to start. From there you need to IMPROVE your FINGERPICKING by looking at the technique needed to play the riffs. And finally learning HOW TO RELAX WHEN PLAYING GUITAR will help TRANSFORM YOUR PLAYING by avoiding unnecessary energy and avoiding wasted movement. BY changing your GUITAR POSTURE you could help promote RELAXATION, increase your ALTERNATE PICKING & start playing better HAMMER ONS and PULL OFFS. Take your technique seriously and you'll start BECOMING A GREAT GUITARIST.

    My go to pick has been the tiny Dunlop Jazz III for years now, in a couple different variations like profiled for extra grip and the John Petrucci signature pick. All are over 2.5mm thick and have a nice sharp point. Good stuff

    I had to watch a dozen videos of this type to find one in which it is explained why the thumb should be positioned this way. The other videos only said that this is right and that is wrong, making them unconvincing for me to make the change. Thanks!

    Damn Bro your explanation was so clear! I thought I was finally getting the hang of it but my pull-offs and hammer ons just sounded so weak. I kind of figured that if I actually plucked the string with my finger when pulling off it sounded much cleaner and you just confirmed that 100%. I agree with you, I dont know why they call em pull-offs, it's more confusing then anything and does not describe the actual movement being performed. This is still not easy but so much easier than trying to get a strong sound by just simply taking your finger off the fret

    Flexible picks are great for beginners. Since they are probably flat picking anyway. But they should beslowly working toward thicker picks and better technique like attack angle. Easiest picks to use are ussually jazz picks. Theyre tapered on all sides so as forgiving as a little stiff pick can get... try a jp signature.

    As someone who has spent far too long looking at TH-cam videos on this matter, when I'd rather have been learning songs, I believe this is the best and most in depth picking guide which has been missing and prevented me from understanding. I want to say after 15 years of playing, I've finally fixed this; however, no matter how much I cover the pick to prevent the 360 spin, I can't seem to get it. You are the first person I've seen address the 360 degree spin specifically though which is promising, and I will continue to watch. Thanks for this invaluable video, I hope it eventually clicks, but the spin seems to keep happening

    Thanks for this! Ive been playing for 6 months and apparently advancing fairly quickly. I have been playing with .73m pics since they seemed to work best as a true beginner. Until now. I just assumed .73 was the right one for me not making the corrolation between progressing in my journey and modifying my tools. I knew when it was time to move from nylon strings to steel and upgrade to a Talyor, but didnt even think of something as fundamental as my pic. After watching this I grabbed a 1mm and wow...i can actually "feel" the difference. I'm learning "Give a little bit" by Supertramp and even just the intro strums are so much crisper with the 1m. I guess I have graduated to the thicker pics. Love it. Thanks for the tips.

    In the Celtic Style of Guitar (one of the most strumming-based and rhythmically intense genres), most professionals play 0.7-0.75 mm picks. Why do you think this is the case given your opinion about using thick picks?

    • @MaxRichMusic
      @MaxRichMusic 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Because if you’re mainly strumming you can get away with a slightly thinner pick since the stroke is so wide and detailed accuracy isn’t needed.

    No idea why it took so long for TH-cam's algorithm to introduce your channel, but this video is fantastic. Such a clear explanation of the mechanisms involved in hammer-ons and 'pull offs'. The mistakes you described are exactly the things I've been doing, especially with the really weak 'pull offs' where the sound just dies. I now have a really clear goal to work towards. Thanks so much!

  • @garyswift83
    @garyswift83 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The thicker the pick the more mellow the tone. The thinner the pick the brighter the tone. Too thick a pick would be too heavy of a tone. Sometimes a .77mm pick is perfect in thickness and gives a great tone. Yeah the really thin ones are sometimes pointless, but there are a lot of reasons to use any thickness pick. It just depends if your a metal player, jazz, those might use a thick pick but in rock n roll slash himself uses a ernie ball .77mm pick. I have many different sizes, and thickness picks. I like many different sounds but I gravitate toward the sizes 1mm or under. Every player is different and every guitar player loves a good well rounded pick for all his needs.

    There have been, and are still, loads of guitarist doing things the unconventional “wrong” way, not according the book (YOUR book), but still making beautiful muziek. Some are using no picks, thumb picks, coins, stones, shells or whatever. Just do whatever is comfortable for you. Get rid of these stupid conventions (Jimmy Hendrix did) and just try to find your own way. I really hate this kind of videos, I’m sorry. This (American) attitude “you’re doing this wrong”, “don’t make this mistake” is really pissing me off and I know I’d best not react and just scroll further, but I can’t hołd myself anymore: the algorithm is showing me more and more of these ridiculous videos from guitarists who have clearly failed to become famous and therefore started making pedantic films for TH-cam, telling others how and what to do. I’ve had enough 😔

    GUILD rules !

  • @davidnika446
    @davidnika446 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm right handed, and have always rested the guitar on the left leg. *This way, the right leg definitely helps hold the guitar in place, instead of having to use your hands & arms to control the position of the guitar. I can't believe that most righties play with it on the right leg. When I try resting it on my right leg, I need to angle the headstock forward quite a bit, and/or raise my right elbow in an unnatural and uncomfortable way. It makes me tense up instantly. Maybe not everyone experiences this like I do, but it sure seems like guitars are built to rest on the leg of your non-dominant side.
