      @@shaikon5617 Bonsoir Shai Kon. La royal oak est sortie en 1972, montre sport chic plus chere qu'une Patek Philippe en or et 10 fois plus cher qu'une Rolex Submariner à l'époque. Elle ne se vendait pas. La Laureato est sortie en 1975, pourquoi Girard Perregaux aurait voulu copier une montre qui se venadait difficilement. D'autre part, la nautilus est sorti en 1976. Est ce que Patek Philippe a copié Girard Perregaux? Non, la Laureato est une montre unique et magnifique. Elle mérite d'être plus respectée.

      They lack an original iconic design. This is ultimately makes a luxury watch brand popular these days. Or they need to spend squillions buying celebrity endorsements.

    • @barrylattuca5352
      @barrylattuca5352 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@goldencalf5144 It’s interesting that you say that. I think they designed a watch in the 70’s to meet what the market desired. So did IWC. The difference was the actual designer. If Gerald Genta had designed the Laureato, it would be beloved. If IWC readopts the Genta design of the Ingenieur, it will be well received and it will be close to the design of the Royal Oak, as well.

    • @goldencalf5144
      @goldencalf5144 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@barrylattuca5352 The Laureato is basically just a clone of the Royal Oak. There's nothing particularly original about it even though it's very well made. The Royal Oak ushered in a new era of watch design and popularised the concept of a luxury watch in steel, hence it is iconic. IWC has their iconic pilots watches. Brands like GP and Piaget make fine timepieces, but don't have an iconic model that is synonymous with the brand.

With the Octo and the rise in popularity of these integrated, octagonal watches it is no surprise that the Laureato is getting a second look from the community. I would only consider it similar with its quadrant symmetrical case shape and integrated bracelet. However the bracelet design is NOT the same as the APRO with a single link in the centre instead of the two offset to the sides, the dial is “Clous de París” and not the AP “patisserie” style, and when looking at an original release Laureato it’s easy to see the lineage; if you don’t know the original models then it’s easy to state it looks the same as APRO. I personally think the Rolex Newman Daytona’s look more like the 1960s Omega Speedmasters than the Laureato looks like the Royal Oak…but it seems Rolex gets as pass at everything and even gets credited for imagining colours when they release base 3-hand models.
    Great as always, looking forward to the next one!

    Well done Jenni! Another very informative look at a watch brand with a solid history. The real question regarding the Laureato and the other similar watches is who inspired who. From your video the photos of the original Laureato contained a lot of the DNA that inspired the Royal Oak and other similar watches. GP has its own right bragging rights for design and quality. Your review of GP history increased my appreciation of a brand with history and established horological contributions. Thank you for creating a well researched video.

    The idea that the Laureato is a knock-off or imitation is a fascinating one. And I think Jenni hit the nail on the head when she said "GP marketing hasn't been the best".
    The Nautilus, IWC, Rolex etc that all followed marketed themselves over many years so strongly that we see them all as their own thing - but they're all incestuous copies of each other designed or inspired by one person. I own a Laureato and I'm very happy to see GP doing much better nowadays 🙂

    I just don’t think there is a case for calling this a copycat watch. That is like saying anyone who designs a watch with a round case is copying other watchmakers round cases. There are only limited versions of a watch case and in the end it is what is inside the timepiece and the clarity of the dial, plus price which counts. Rolex has been copying other manufacturers for ages!

    AP, Patek, Vacheron etc. The finish and the green dial one knocks it out of the Park. Wears like silk on the skin. Only thing that could be better is an ajustable bracelet like on the overseas and Nautilus and a quick bracelet change System for an additional leather or rubber strap like on the VC OS ( perfect by the way).

    Cool to see this! I actually own the first Laureato quartz, it’s a very small watch by these days standards, but it’s a cool piece of history and even tho it’s quartz it’s very interesting movement

    • @MrGrentch
      @MrGrentch ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As it happens it was GP's first quartz movement that was the first Swiss stepping motor(one tick per second. Other early Swiss quartz were smooth sweep tuning fork types). That stepping motor was also more powerful than others, so unlike other quartz watches back then the hands on their models were nornal sized and the date flipped over instantly at 12. They also set the 32,768Hz quartz frequency that the vast majority of quartz watches followed right down to today. They designed the movement(with some help from JLC) for ease of maintenance by ordinary watchmakers used to mechanicals(other early quartz are nightmares by comparison). They used teflon bearings instead of "jewels" so it never needed oiling.
      Your Laureato is going to be a later evolution of that movement, but it was and remains one of the finest quartz movements ever made and a very cool bit of early quartz horology. It's easy to forget than when new quartz was the future and your watch would have been more expensive than the mechanical version and more desirable too.
      Funny enough its small size was as much down to them being able to make the movements smaller over time. Their very first quartz watches were more like today's sizes, simply because the movements were larger. I suspect the growth of bigger watches in the 1970's was as much down to these larger quartz and other "electronic" movements. By the 1980's when the tech had advanced so they could make smaller movements analogue quartz watches shrunk right back down again.Some of the smallest men's watches of the 20th century were from the 80's and women's watches required an electron microscope to read. 😀

    According to GP's own TH-cam channel, the dial is not guilloche, but stamped. I don't think it really makes a difference, except to make the watcher cheaper to produce.

    Known for their extreme rip off prices, I hate to criticise a watch brand again, but they bring it upon themselves. I don't hate the brand, I have owned about 6 old vintage GPs, and the Gyromatic 39, with 39 jewels, was excellent.

    The Laureato is Gerald Genta design variant. Therefore, there are going to be similarities to other Swiss Watch House models designed by the same man. GP are underrated for sure and so not the recognition they deserve. I believe in years to come people will appreciate the brand more. They quality and craftsmanship are very acceptable. There needs to be more work by GP in their marketing.

    These "Royal Oak knockoff" discussions: Sorry, I just dont get it:
    1) the PP Nautilus came 1 year after the Laureato and yet, no one says the Nautilus is a cheap knock off of the Royal Oak.
    2) I really do not see any similarities between the modern Royal Oak and the Laureato. They share the integrated design and frankly absolutely nothing else.
    3) why is Royal Oak trading way above retail OK but at the same time some people take offence from the Laureato retail price? Give me 3 reasons why the AP should deserve such much higher retail price. without any airy-fairy esoteric explanation: 3 tangible reasons why!

    Hey Jenni! Great video as always...☺️
    Whether the GP is a rip-off, well... It's arguable. To me it represents the silhouette of that era, made popular by Royal Oak and Nautilus. It does have striking and undeniable resemblances to the two, but to say that it's a carbon copy might take away the historical importance that this watch holds...
