Years ago I owned an 1815 up/down in white gold. What an amazing reference from a top-tier Manufacturer. I sold it because it just didn’t fit my lifestyle and wasn’t getting enough wrist time for the price. I regret selling it every day! Thanks for reviewing it here.
You’re not the only one. I’ve lost count of the number of watches I regret selling, particularly when I look at the figures they go for now compared to what I sold them for twenty-odd years ago!
I own a Saxonia Automatic in rose gold and I only wear it on formal events or special occasions. When it comes to scratches, 18k gold makes stainless steel seem like it’s as hard as a diamond…

Agreed. Owned a Lange 1, Richard Lange, and recently got the Saxonia thin with the blue starry dial. it’s crazy… the saxonia thin is extremely thin but they’ve managed to keep a ridiculously high level of finishing. The dial is a masterclass in elegance. You’d think it’d be tacky being sparkly. Nope. It’s like staring into a galaxy. IMO lange’s best dials are their minimal ones. Super clean and flawless even under a microscope.

He prefers frequency of new releases. He respects A Lange and sohne a lot though and how well made they are. They just do what they do really well, they are not oriented to bringing new models to market which some prefer. It’s more a matter of personal preference for his tier lists. He also likes budget watches (and watches with a very well-known resale value) which makes sense for his audiences.
It's a pleasure to hand wind a watch, not an inconvenience! My first vintage watch I bought a year ago is on my wrist almost everyday because I like winding and setting the time when it stops!

Beautiful watch. And lovely review. Whilst I picked the Saxonia Thin over the Saxonia with the sub-dial as the 'entry level' Lange, there is no question that ALS is a stunning brand at the pinnacle of horology.
In Australia, every A. Lange & Sohne display cabinet is even emptier than Rolex display cabinet. I was fortunate enough to purchase an 1815 Up/Down in 2018. Back then, Lange’s were easy to obtain. I still own it and it is the star of my collection. I went to visit the Lange Boutique in Sydney a few days ago and they literally had only three Watches available for purchase.
Really appreciate this video. I, too, prefer the 3/4 plate architecture of German movements over Swiss movements. Coincidentally, I was wearing my Saxonia Copper Blue while watching it.
Finally saw one of these in person. Truly good looking watch. I prefer the Up Down, but the boutique did not have one. That will probably be my retirement ‘celebration’ watch.

3:18 Manually winding my watch every other day is a source of great joy. I’ll never understand those who say that manually winding your watch(es) is frustrating.
I'm on the other side of the boat. I can appreciate the art and routine of manual winding and automatic movements even, but I'm a Quartz guy, mainly for accuracy, convenience, reliability,and cost. I have a dozen automatics but haven't been wearing them much. Casio is my main brand! Next up is GS Quartz.
Great video, compeltely agree with your opinion regarding the differnce between Gemran and Swiss styles. German is effortlessly caml, simple and practical. Even when there are many compliations in a dial the feel is precise, uncramed. Speaking in German within the video was a really nice touch!

If I were able to afford a luxury dress watch (and had the need for one), it would be a Lange 1 Moon Phase. Second choice would be the 1815 Annual Calendar. Either one in Pink Gold with the Silver dial. Not the cheapest models, but since we're talking "dream watch"...
I do like this watch Jenni, nice and simple dial an easy to read without being in your face. Being a manual wind is also fine for me as it gives that added physical connection to the watch, transmitting our energy directly to the watch to keep its little heart beating. As for the movements, I'm not that bothered where they are made as long as they are well made and reasonably accurate but looks can be important if you have a display case back. Personally I love the look of the old 1863 movement. Its always great to hear your views on watches Jenni. Keep up the great work.

It gave me a tingle (no, not in that way!!) - I just love long German words, even the boring ones like aufenthaltserlaubnis, bescheinigung and arbeitsvermittlung (for non German speakers these are all words you learn if you go to work in Germany. A LANGE & SOHNE is my absolute favourite watch maker , I’m on the list for a datograph , I went to see them in harrods last week to ask if I could change it to the datograph perpetual, I have to admit spending this much on a watch is mad I know, but I’m dreaming about it every night, it won’t leave my mind ,
The highlight of this watch review is you speaking in German for part of it, while having subtitles for all of your viewers, myself included, who do not speak German. In my opinion, German is one of those underrated European languages. While the French and Italian language maybe the languages most closely associated with romance, the German language is such a muscular and powerful language that it provides a nice counterpoint. Please keep doing more German segments like this!
Thank for the great video. If you put the design aside since this is very personal. How would the mouvement compare to the JLC Master Ultra Thin which is less expensive. It has more components, higher frequency, more jewels but lower power reserve. What is your opinion?
I rarely need an actual dress watch (with a suit) these days. I have one, an older vintage one (Longines Ultra Chron 14K not 18K) and it does the job (not that anyone would care if I just wore a nice dive watch). A gold watch these days is pretty crazy in price, especially a new one. Kind of glad I bought this decades ago. That one is really pretty but I suspect I couldn't afford it! I'll leave this to the rich guys (or girls). Good review though. Were I to really buy something like this, it would probably be an IWC.
Long lugs can be annoying, but they have their benefits too, makes it easier to clean out the dust if nothing else. And also, it's one of those quintessentially German watch design memes, so it'd be a shame to omit them in the premier German brand.
@Jenni I know that this is besides the point, but a watch nut like me can’t help it. What is the watch you are actually wearing in the video? At first, I thought it might be a Rolex Submariner, but it looks more like a Tudor Black Bay. 😅
The biggest problem is lack of yellow gold option and the oversizing. Those watches will look really good at 30-36mm in diameter. Yellow gold and small size gives ultra-orthodox look to dress watch.
The Saxona's 35mm case will fit better on tiny wrist, but the 1815 looks more unique. I wish they made a Lange 1 in Little Lange 1 sized. At 35-36mm Lange 1 would be my grail watch. If I had bigger wrist the gray dialed Lange Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar would me the ONE. Now I just need to amase enough wealth so I can comfortably afford a $300k Lange. 😅

My A Lange Saxonia has become one of favorites. In a safe w/ Pateks, AP's, Vacheron's, and Rolexes -- Lange is at the top
I think German watchmakers are underrated. Lange is my favorite. I would choose a Lange Odysseus over that of ANY Patek.
No watch that is more expensive than a combine harvester is underrated.

I've always preferred the looks of a german watch movement like A. Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original. They're a pure piece of art in my eyes.

for your wrist, take the older 1815 which measures 36mm. Also solves the problem with the lugs.
The biggest problem is lack of yellow gold option and the oversizing. Those watches will look really good at 30-36mm in diameter. Yellow gold and small size gives ultra-orthodox look to dress watch.
The Saxona's 35mm case will fit better on tiny wrist, but the 1815 looks more unique. I wish they made a Lange 1 in Little Lange 1 sized. At 35-36mm Lange 1 would be my grail watch. If I had bigger wrist the gray dialed Lange Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar would me the ONE. Now I just need to amase enough wealth so I can comfortably afford a $300k Lange. 😅
