    Q: When thinking about sustainability and over-consumption, how do you balance making/knitting something you know that you will use or wear vs making something just for the skill-building/love of the craft/process? It's something I've been thinking about recently as I look at all of the things I want to knit and realizing I do want to try new techniques and broaden my horizons, but it would never be used or worn so it feels like a waste of time and resources... for me it's like immovable object (my never ending need to create) vs unstoppable force (everything from yarn to yarn shipping to garment making produces waste and i feel like i need to justify everything i make with a use so it doesn't feel wasteful)
    Anyways, I love all these chattier videos, theyre so nice to listen and knit along to!

    Q: I must know Merry and Pippins back stories and epic adventures. A few minute vlog of a day in their lives, from their perspective perhaps?!
    Q: I've seen in your videos that sometimes you use two different sized needles on your circulars? Why? I'm new to knitting, and want all the cool tricks to create amazing things.

    It seems like makers on YT experience a lot of pressure to make tutorials and I just want to say we're here for whatever content you put out. I think if you ever wanted to just mention some of the adjustments you make to your patterns as you're making them that would still be very cool. No pressure to teach or explain things well (or at all if that's not your thing). I (unintentionally) learned how to sew and crochet from watching channels who were fully like "THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL, I DON'T KNOW THAT I'M DOING! (send halp?) 😭" which is to say, you have more to offer than you may realise. Personally, my ADHD can't handle educational videos (at best I follow every step and have no idea how I got to the finished piece or how to repeat it). I learn from watching other people make mistakes and figure it out, and then I get inspired and go off and do the same thing. But give me a verbal instruction? Mm-mm, nope, error 404. I might be alone in this but I don't think so? Totally cool if that's not a part of your work that you want to show, but just wanted to add a supportive comment to let you know we don't expect you to be perfect or a fountain of expertise, just do whatever you're comfortable with, and we will be here for it. ❤

    • @BreathingYarn
      @BreathingYarn  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I really appreciate you saying that! I am the same, I’ve learned the most passively through channels that give little tidbits here and there (and I do not have the attention span for 100% educational videos) 😂

      @acutelyalex8700 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree @breathingyarn you will always get people asking for tutorials and advice, but you don't need to do them. TH-cam is full of them, it's fine to redirect to others and people you like, which is what you did. Even very experienced and advanced people do the same thing!

    Well I had a great time watching this while I frogged a sweater vest that sadly was way too big, and then you got to the part about frogging and repurposing when a project isn't right, and i was like, YES! I feel like I used to put pressure on myself to keep things that didnt work because of time invested but then im just sad that they are taking up precious space and not getting used. Totally liberating to let them go! Also, I was recently inspired by some fast fashion crochet mesh tunic/overdress thingie and plan on making one as well! Just gotta figure out what yarn to use.

    I may be too late and you may have already ripped back your waffle cardigan back panel - but did you consider picking up stitches a few inches up at the bottom and doing a new ribbing section instead of frogging back so much at the shoulder? It might save you some time and frustration - if you've not already ripped the shoulder back! It looks really pretty, regardless!

    Love the video and the honesty around your crafting.
    This is more something you could deep dive rather than a correction as i loved your episodeon the ethics of fibres; you mentioned your crochet swim cover up is based on a shop brought "not hand made" item. As far as I am aware there is still no machinery that can duplicate crochet due to the complexity of the motion, meaning anything brought from a shop no matter how cheap has had to be made by hand. It slightly blows my mind and makes me feel a little squeamish. I would love to hear your thoughts on this and the ethical implications it has on purchasing pre crocheted items.
    Again this is a suggestion for a deep dive nothing more. I think your swim cover up will be fab and i can't wait to see it.
    I hope this makes sense and doesn't come across as rude or judgemental
    Thanks 😊

    • @BreathingYarn
      @BreathingYarn  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not rude or judgmental at all 😊. It was a clarification error on my end. It was knit to imitate crochet, not actually crochet. I learned about the fast-fashion hand crochet issues from a TH-camr a few years ago and I’ve never been able to look at crochet in stores the same way since :( it’s aweful

    I was going to say that what I make with icky yarn is crocheted baskets, and then, voilà! 🙂 Loved your WIP parade and your discussion about why and how you are making adjustments. • @cozylyxa

    During this video I used up the ball of yarn I was currently converting into a baby blanket for my baby nephew. I'm doing a corner-to-corner moss stitch, with a green-gradient cotton yarn. I think it will turn out well, into a good spring-summer blanket! My nephew was sort of my spark you could say. Some time after learning that I was to become an aunt, I started crocheting things other than just baskets. Starting with octopi, ghosts, witch hats, pumpkins and hearts.
    I think I'll finish up the octopi I have laying around today, before finally forcing myself to start on a scarf for my friend. I say force, because I have to start with a chain of 209 or 233, which I am not looking forward to. I'll have to use some scrap yarn to mark every tenth stitch, as to not loose count. I also have to figure out if I'd rather use a 3mm hook or a 3,5mm one.
    Oh, and I did finish the dragonfly shawl! It turned out lovely, and I've since acquired a dress to wear it with. (A colleague of my mother got rid of half her wardrobe and had people come by to see if they'd like anything of it. Long story short: My summer wardrobe had a bunch of stuff added to it!)

      @BreathingYarn  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am using Reup cotton that I bought at Joann’s. It’s a partially recycled cotton blend. It’s pretty stiff and I don’t think it’s intended for garments. I don’t think I’d buy it again for clothing but it’s also not bad for a budget cotton 😊 and the cat is Pippin. Shes my Velcro kitty. The other cat (Merry) tolerates me but spends most of her time with my husband 😂

    Fun fact: Crochet can only be done by hand. So any store bought crochet items are handmade and not machine made. You can make knit that sort of looks like crochet by machine, but machines can't crochet like they can weave or knit. Similarly, robots can't sew. There's always a human sitting at a sewing machine sewing each seam, store bought or not. You can produce fabric, cut, fold, etc. by machine, but the seaming is done by human hands at a sewing machine.
